Compton, No. 21 Ford Review: Daytona
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

  • Stacy Compton lost two laps early in last Friday's Daytona 250 with an unscheduled pit stop to remove a piece of plastic from the front grille. He ran in the lead pack the rest of the race and finished 25th.
  • Compton now has two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at the Daytona International Speedway, including a third-place finish there in 1999.
  • Compton has 86 career starts in the Craftsman Truck Series, including two victories. He will drive the first two races of the season for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, then turn over the job to former U.S. Auto Club champion Bobby East for the rest of the season.

Stacy Compton on Daytona:
"The guys gave me a truck that could have possibly won the race. I wonder if Mark (Martin, race winner) is going to split his purse with me, because even at the end I pushed him back through (traffic) twice. It was just an awesome truck. All of the guys worked really hard on this thing. Just our luck, we got a tear-off on the grille the first thing and it got hot and we lost two laps. With this configuration, you just get them back. We had a good enough truck that could get up there; we just couldn't get our laps back. We had a game plan to drop back at the beginning of the race and race hard at the end. I think our call was the right call if we wouldn't have gotten that tear-off on the grille. We could still run just as fast as the leaders. No doubt it was the right move."

Stacy Compton on the season:
"I'm just so proud of everyone at Wood Brothers/JTG Racing. They build an incredible truck. We had to race our way into the show, and we did that by qualifying third. Considering this whole team came together in the last couple months, that's unbelievable. We had a great race truck and things just didn't work out. It's disappointing, but I'm pretty pumped up for the guys to let them know they can build a truck that can run this good. I think that says worlds for the first time these guys have built a truck and doing what they did."

Crew Chief Gary Cogswell on Daytona:
"We came to Daytona with a little different agenda since as a new team we didn't have a provisional to fall back on. We had to set the truck up more for qualifying to make sure we got in the race, then we had to make adjustments on it after the race started to make it better for the long haul. The truck responded to everything we did. It was a bit of bad luck that we lost two laps with the tear-away, but that's racing."

Stacy Compton's 2006 Season Highlights

Best Finishing Position: 25th (Daytona)
