Engine Woes Slow Spencer at Texas
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Jimmy Spencer's late-race charge to the front was derailed when an engine miss in the closing laps of the Silverado 350 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race forced the No. 2 Team ASE/Ultra Wheels Dodge to fall off the pace, and relegating Spencer to 24th at the checkered flag.  Spencer started 25th, but was challenging for a top-10 position after a long green flag run when the gremlins struck.

"It's disappointing to know that all the guys lined up behind you are probably going to blow past you on a restart with just a few laps to go," Spencer said.  "I could tell something was going on with the engine, and we were hoping to finish out the race without any cautions and we might have been able to pick up a decent finish.  But that caution came out late, and it put all those guys right on our bumper.  We definitely didn't need that last caution."

Spencer had a strong truck in the middle stages, moving as high as seventh during a long green flag run in the middle third of the 147-lap race.  It was at that point when Spencer started feeling the initial indications something was wrong with the truck.  A discussion with crew chief Dan Glausz on a caution flag shortly after gave the team several options, but the Ultra Motorsports team decided it was best to stay with routine service and not make any attempts at diagnosis or repairs.

The disappointing finish dropped Spencer one position in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings, to eighth.  Spencer is 419 points behind leader and Ultra Motorsports teammate Ted Musgrave, and just 37 points behind seventh-place David Starr.  Spencer sits 143 points behind fifth-place Mike Skinner and is in the middle of one of the most intense battles for the top ten positions in the history of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
