Toyota Qualifying Notes: Texas
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

  • This is Toyota's second season -- and 48th race -- in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
  • A Toyota has captured the checkered flag 10 times in 47 NCTS races since the beginning of 2004.
  • Todd Bodine was the most recent Tundra race-winner.  He won the NCTS race at Las Vegas in the No. 30 Germain Racing Tundra.  It was Toyota's sixth victory in 2005.
  • In addition to Todd Bodine, three other Tundra drivers have registered wins this season.  Toyota (Memphis) have all crossed the finish line first in Tundras this year.
  • A Toyota Tundra has started on the pole 11 times this season.
  • Mike Skinner has now registered seven pole positions.  In addition to his pole tonight at Texas, Skinner has started first at Atlanta, Las Vegas, Nashville, Texas, Charlotte and California.
  • Other Tundra drivers who have started on the pole are Bill Lester (Kentucky and Kansas), Brandon Whitt (Memphis) and David Reutimann (Bristol).
  • Two Tundra drivers have made their 100th career NCTS starts this season.  Mike Skinner started NCTS race 100 at Martinsville and Bill Lester made his 100th career NCTS start at Atlanta.

MIKE SKINNER, No. 5 Toyota Tundra, Bill Davis Racing:
"This was a real nail-biter.  There are a lot of fast trucks out there.  We totally focused on race runs during practice. Our Tundra is just really fast.  I don't know what did it because there were other fast trucks.  We just had a good truck and I hit my marks real well."

Do the Bill Davis Racing teams work together - there are three BDR trucks in the top-6? "Not as far as qualifying.  The Bill Davis Racing trucks have been strong all year.  I think Johnny (Benson) should have won a couple of races by now.  The 5 truck should have won more races than we have.  It is what it is.  We have been able to get to Victory Lane a couple of times and we've been able to sit on poles and lead laps.  It could have been a lot better year, but it could have been worse.  I'm not going to complain about it.  I'd just like to win a race at Texas.  We've been awful close -- had a dominant truck last time here (June) -- and somehow over the course of the race we messed it up."

Will the Toyota trucks work together? "I think that there plan is to get around the 5.  The 5 plan is to stay in front of all of them."

What will be the key to the race? "Just making smart adjustments on the truck.  Jeff (Hensley, crew chief) has to be blessed with good calls on the pit box.  I have to give Jeff good feedback to make the good calls.  It's not any one guy that can do this.  We have to do this together.  Our guys have to have a good night on pit road.  We just have to put it all together."

Is your truck as good as the one you had here in June? "I don't know if our truck is as good as it was last time here.  We have some things incorporated in it to this time to try and get the right front tire on it better.  We were a little more conservative with the shocks and some different things.  Our main goal is to keep the tires on.  We finished fourth in June.  We had a truck that was fast enough to lead the race, but it was killing the tires on 25 laps.  If you can't finish, it doesn't do you any good to be in front."

BILL LESTER, No. 22 Crown Royal Tundra, Bill Davis Racing:
"We didn't know exactly what we had when we unloaded because this is a brand new race truck.  I'm really optimistic about it because we shaped it after the truck I drove at Kansas -- which got us the pole and a top-five finish.  We had to make a couple adjustments so it was good for me here at Texas.  In the two practice sessions we worked primarily on race runs, and we just taped it up once and made a qualifying run.  Then we talked about it afterwards and we changed the total set-up.  So, we really rolled the dice with what was going to happen here in qualifying -- and it worked out really well.  It was surprising because we were working on a set-up that we think is going to be better in the race tomorrow.  I think we'll be strong tomorrow.  I'm real happy with the performance and the efforts of everyone at Bill Davis Racing."

Any worries running a new truck? "You never know really what it's going to do when you unload it, but I have extreme confidence in everyone at Bill Davis Racing.  Basically, from the word 'go,' it was solid and it was dependable.  It was everything I needed and more.  So, no I don't have any worries."

JOHNNY BENSON, No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles, Bill Davis Racing:
How was qualifying?
"It was good.  I really expected to be a threat for the pole.  I'm happy we ended up in the top-10.  I'm real happy.  We were a little quicker in practice -- but I think everybody was.  We were right there -- it drove good and it was comfortable.  Everything was perfect.  I figured I'd be in the 50s."

What are your goals in the race? "To finish one spot better than I have the last two times I was here.  Hopefully, we did everything we needed to do in practice to run the line we need to win.  This place is real tough off Turn Two and being able to turn good and not go off and crush the wall coming off Turn Two is key.  Turn Three is a little tricky, but the rest of the track is not too bad.  If you can get up underneath people off the corner -- you should be in decent shape."

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 17 NTN Bearings Tundra, Darrell Waltrip Motorsports:
"The truck drove great -- I'm just confused why it didn't run faster.  We were much, much faster than that -- by a long shot in practice.  It just wouldn't go any faster.  It lost some speed somewhere -- I can't tell you why.  It drove great and the motor ran good.  Everything was the same when we finished practice -- it just wouldn't repeat that lap we needed.  I'm a little confused by that."

BRANDON WHITT, No. 38 Red Horse Racing Tundra, Red Horse Racing:
"I'm happy with our qualifying run.  I thought it would have been faster than that -- but we'll take it.  We were real good in practice in race trim.  We took what we learned at Atlanta last week and brought it here.  I'm pretty happy with it."
