Todd Kluever in The No. 50 Shell Rotella T Ford was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race at Atlanta. Kluever finished sixth, his 10tth top-10 finish in 2005. He took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the 16th time in 22 races.
What happened at the end of the race? "I don't know. I just saw the 60 truck sideways going across the start-finish line. I tried to go to the outside and by that time everybody had checked up. There was a crowd of trucks. I went to the outside to try and squeak by and by that time there was so much smoke I couldn't see nothing. I was trying to get out by the wall to squeak by but everything was in smoke and I couldn't even see the wall. I hit the wall and bounced back into Bobby. The throttle was stuck through the infield and into pit wall. It was kind of a long, excruciating deal."
The good news is that you are okay. "I'm all right. My ankles are sore. I braced myself pretty hard against the pedals and stuff. We'll be all right. We'll go to Texas. I've still got one good one left. This was a brand new one and I killed it, unfortunately. I've got a good one left so we can go try and win Texas."
You ran in the top-10 all day. "The first run we were good and everybody just got a little better. We just couldn't quite find the right deal to make it the best. I think we had a top-five truck all day or we ran right around there. We didn't have a very good pit stop on the first stop but the guys came back and gave us a good second stop. That's all I can ask for. Maybe we should have come in and put tires on there at the end, who knows. It is what it is and we'll go to Texas."
It must be hard to race guys with new tires there at the end. "It's tough. It's so fast here and the draft is so big. You pull out and go side-by-side and it's almost like somebody hitting the brakes. It's tough because you're trying to make things happen. It's definitely tough racing. There were guys a lot faster come through the field and there's guys that are trying to keep track position to hold on for three laps. It's an exciting place, man, and the fans always get a good show here."
Your truck seemed to be good in the middle of a run. "We are always like that. It takes us five or ten laps to get going and we were the fastest truck on the track for the next 20 and then we'd fall down and match speed with everybody else. It's something we're working on and hopefully we'll get it figured out by Texas."
Mike Beam, Crew Chief, No. 50 Shell Rotella T Ford: "That was pretty sad right there. It's a brand new truck and the way it worked out there we finished sixth. I don't know why NASCAR threw that caution anyway, the 1 truck had a dadgum flat and that's bull. It's just crazy. Cautions breed cautions and stuff like that, that's what happens."
Timothy Peters, No. 4 Bailey's Dodge:
That was a wild finish. What did you see? "It was just wild. I'm just glad we were able to come out of here almost damage free. We've got a couple of idiots out there. They can't help it."
How was your race? "It was good. We just kept fighting tight, fighting tight and finally there toward the end and we was able to come down and get four new Goodyear Wranglers and it fixed it for the time being. We got us a top-15 today and we've got Homestead left so I'm happy for the Bailey's Dodge. I've got to thank Bailey's, Mighty Mike's Hot Mark for sponsoring us at this race, Dodge, Arrington Engines and Bobby Hamilton. We'll put this together and go to Homestead."
What did you learn today? "The draft and setting them up. It's just amazing what this place does. The air messing the trucks is awesome. I learned a lot and we'll go to Homestead."
