| Chevy Preview: Richmond
09-08-2005 | TruckSeries.com Report
Stars is the theme for Chevrolet Team Silverado as the powerhouse rolls in to Richmond International Raceway to race under the lights. As a part of the big Chevrolet Rock & Roll 400 weekend, Team Silverado drivers Dennis Setzer, Jack Sprague and Ron Hornaday will have musical celebrity paint schemes for the September 8 running of the Cheerios® Betty Crocker® 200 for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Current series points leader Setzer will have Blue County featured on the hood of his No. 46 Chevrolet Silverado. Sprague's No. 16 Chevy Trucks Silverado will sport the image of country music heartthrob Trace Adkins. Ron Hornaday's No. 6 GM Goodwrench Silverado will carry the likeness of up-and-coming group, Los Lonely Boys. The No. 47 Chevrolet Celebrity All Star Silverado will make its fourth appearance of 2005. Teaming with Setzer will be NASCAR NEXTEL Cup star Kevin Harvick in the cockpit of the RaySat KISS/KISS Army sponsored truck fielded by Morgan Dollar Motorsports. "Team Silverado will have a strong driver lineup at Richmond," said Dayne Pierantoni, GM Racing Silverado program manager. "With Kevin (Harvick) in the No. 47 All Star Silverado, Tony Stewart teaming with Ron (Hornaday) in a second Harvick-owned truck and Kyle Busch in the No. 15 Silverado, the stage is set for an exciting race. "The Richmond NCTS race is always very competitive and action-packed. All four of our full-time Silverado teams tested last week at Richmond. We were very pleased with the outcome and are looking forward to a good race Thursday night and a Silverado taking a trip to victory lane." Stewart, piloting the No. 92 GM Goodwrench/KHI Sponsor Appreciation Silverado, will be looking to capture his third NCTS victory at Richmond. The 2002 NASCAR Cup champion won back-to-back races at the .75-mile Virginia track in 2002 and 2003. Kyle Busch will be riding on the momentum of his first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series victory last weekend at California Speedway as he climbs back in the No. 15 ditch.com Silverado. The 20-year old Las Vegas native has scored two NCTS wins in 2005, Charlotte and Dover, behind the wheel of the Billy Ballew Motorsports owned truck. Richmond International Raceway has been on the NCTS since the 1995 inaugural season and the site of epic battles and wild finishes. The .75-mile oval is unique in that it combines the close competition of a short track but there is an increased speed element as a result of the long 1,290-foot backstretch. The corners are just slightly banked, 14 degrees, making handling very critical. DRIVER: DENNIS SETZER "You have to approach Richmond in a unique way. First of all you have to run up front to stay out of trouble. Secondly your truck must turn well in the corners and you have to get off of turn two. Your set up cannot allow you to be loose getting into one or three and braking is very important." DRIVER: JACK SPRAGUE "We have won twice at Richmond and I think I still have the record for the best burnout when I caught the tires on fire after the win in 2001. It is a fun track to drive. Just enough larger than Bristol, Martinsville or some of the other short tracks we run out so you aren't constantly beating and banging on each other but close enough racing to have to be up on the wheel the whole race. It isn't the easiest place to pass but not impossible either because there are two grooves. You need your truck to be solid on the corner entry, run through the center of the corner and then come up off the corners hard. You have to watch your brakes because you will get them hot and be in trouble pretty quickly if they fail." DRIVER: DAVID STARR "We were lucky enough to be able to test at Richmond the other day and things went really well. We took a top 10 at Bristol and have now set our goals on putting our Spears Chevy in the top 5 at Richmond. "Being successful at Richmond requires a good handling truck, lots of power under the hood and a big smile from Lady Luck. We know we have necessary handling and power with our Spears Chevy Silverado and our Hutter engine, so all we need is Lady Luck on our side and we will be good to go. "This is a big Chevy weekend with all three NASCAR Series competing and it is always a thrill to be part of such a star-studded event. Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick will join the rest of the Craftsman Truck hard-chargers and that will make the racing event more spectacular. I can think of nothing better than being able to put our Spears Chevy right in Victory Lane and when the race gets underway, we will be doing our very best to do just that." DRIVER: KEVIN HARVICK QUOTES: "It'll be a lot of fun to have KISS back on the truck and RaySat sponsoring us is definitely going to be a lot of fun. To drive the All Star truck and be able to go out and just have a good time on Thursday night is going to be a lot of fun for me." DRIVER: RON HORNADAY "It is going to be fun having Tony (Stewart) as my teammate and to have my boss (Kevin Harvick) in the race as well. But I don't want to race around them 'cause of course they'll all be out to win -- just like I will be! It'll definitely be a fun event. One-day races are cool. I love being in the GM Goodwrench Silverado and racing in the NCTS. It is the best racing out there right now. "We just need to get our KHI team to victory lane. Maybe having Los Lonely Boys on the hood will be the good luck charm we need." DRIVER: TONY STEWART "The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series just keeps getting better and better. The competition gets tougher each year. You don't just go in there and expect to win. You've got to go out there and earn it. When you have Bobby Hamilton, Ted Musgrave, Dennis Setzer and those guys that are running up front each week - Rick Crawford, David Starr - you can't take anything for granted. You have to have everything right to go out and win just like you do in a Busch race or a Cup race. "I don't think so. The Trucks are quite a bit different from the Cup cars. It just gives me some time on the race track and gives me a chance to get the feel that I want a little quicker than if I just got in the Cup car and started on Friday." DRIVER: KYLE BUSCH
