Toyota Preview: Richmond
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

THIS RACE:  The Cheerios Betty Crocker 200 will be the 11th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) race at Richmond International Raceway.  There will be nine Tundras in the field at Richmond -- the 18th NCTS race of the 2005 NCTS season.

LAST RACE:  In the most recent NCTS race at Bristol Motor Speedway (August 24), Tundra driver Mike Skinner was the race-winner and three other Toyota racers finished among the top-10.  Following Skinner across the finish line were Tundra racers Todd Bodine (second), Johnny Benson (fourth), and Mike Wallace (ninth).

WIN ONE:  Mike Skinner's victory at Bristol was his first NCTS win driving a Toyota Tundra and the 17th victory of his NCTS career (third all-time).  Skinner, driver of the No. 5 Bill Davis Racing Tundra, started on the outside of row one and led 190 laps en route to the checkered flag.  Before the Bristol race, Skinner's best NCTS finish in a Tundra was a second-place last season at Atlanta.  In 2005, Skinner's best result before his Bristol victory was a fourth-place finish in five races -- at Kentucky, Kansas, Texas, St. Louis and Nashville.

LONG TIME COMING:  Skinner, who returned to the Craftsman Truck Series full-time at the beginning of the 2004 season, last visited 'Victory Lane' in the series nine years ago.  The 1995 NCTS champion last registered a NCTS victory at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Cal. (10-14-96) -- his final year as a NCTS regular prior to 2004.  Skinner had taken the green flag in 53 NCTS races since his last win.

MIKE'S REMARKS:  "This race team probably deserved five or six wins by now," said Skinner, following the Bristol race.  "We've been really close so many times.  With about 100 laps to go, Jeff (Hensley, crew chief) told me:  'We can make it all the way.'  And I told somebody to slap Jeff.  I said: 'I'm not doing that.'  Last year we did that and lost the race.  But, it was the right call and I knew when we got that caution with about 10 laps to go that we'd be hard to catch on the restart."

STAND BY SKINNER:  After the Bristol race, Mike Skinner tipped his hat to the folks at Toyota.  "I want to thank Toyota," said Skinner.  "This was a brand new Tundra truck and we had an awful strong motor.  Toyota stood behind me while we struggled a bit last year and this year."

A FEW FIRSTS:  Skinner's victory at Bristol marked the first NCTS victory for team owner Bill Davis, as well as the first NCTS win for crew chief Jeff Hensley.  Davis becomes the sixth team owner, joining Jack Roush, Rick Hendrick, Darrell Waltrip, Richard Childress and Dale/Teresa Earnhardt, to register NASCAR wins in Cup, Busch and Craftsman Truck Series racing.

POINTS PACE:  After the first 17 races of 2005, four Toyota Tundra drivers are among the top-15 in the NCTS championship point standings.  David Reutimann is sixth in the standings with 2,195 points, 320 points behind leader Dennis Setzer, and just 63 points from third-place Bobby Hamilton.  Following Reutimann in the standings are Tundra racers Mike Skinner (2,186 points) in seventh-place, Todd Bodine (2,131 points) in ninth-place, and Johnny Benson (2,054 points) in 13th-place.

TOYOTA SWEEPS TENNESSEE:  Toyota scored a 'hat trick' in the three NCTS races in the 'Volunteer State,' winning the race and pole at all three NCTS stops in the state-- Bristol (Aug. 24), Nashville (Aug. 13) and Memphis (July 23).  In addition to Mike Skinner's win at Bristol, the Tennessee Tundra winners were David Reutimann (Nashville) and Brandon Whitt (Memphis).  Pole-winners in Tennessee were Reutimann (Bristol), Skinner (Nashville) and Whitt (Memphis).

LEADERS OF THE PACK:  In the two most recent NCTS races, at Bristol and Nashville, Toyota drivers have led all but one lap.  Tundra drivers led all 200 laps at Nashville.  Race-winner Mike Skinner led the field two times for 190 laps and Chad Chaffin led the race once for 10 laps.  At Nashville, Tundra drivers led 149 of the 150 laps.  Nashville race-winner David Reutimann led the field three times for 41 laps and pole-winner Mike Skinner led the race four times for 98 laps.  Other Tundra drivers who led the race at Nashville were Todd Bodine (three laps) and Bill Lester (seven laps).

ONE WIN IN RICHMOND:  Mike Skinner has registered one victory in the Craftsman Truck Series at Richmond.  In 1996, Skinner started on the outside of row one and led 109 laps en route to the NCTS checkered flag at Richmond.  In addition to his win at the Virginia track, Skinner has also finished third (1995) and 10th (2004) in NCTS events at Richmond.

EXPERIENCE AT RIR:  Four Tundra drivers -- Johnny Benson, Todd Bodine, Mike Skinner and Mike Wallace -- have combined to make 109 NASCAR starts in Cup, Busch and NCTS races at Richmond.  Mike Wallace has the most NCTS starts at the track (four) and Todd Bodine has competed in the most races at Richmond (40) among the four veteran racers.

FOUR FOR TOYOTA:  Toyota drivers have registered four wins in 2005, and Toyota now has eight NCTS victories since the beginning of the 2004 season.  In addition to Mike Skinner's win at Bristol, other Tundra race winners include Brandon Whitt at Memphis (July 23) and David Reutimann at Nashville (Aug. 13).  Toyota's first win of the 2005 campaign came at Kansas (July 2) when Todd Bodine guided his No. 30 Allman Brothers Band Tundra to 'Victory Lane.'

PLENTY OF POLES:  Since the beginning of the 2004 NCTS season, Toyota drivers have started races from the pole position 13 times.  Last year, Tundra drivers captured the pole position five times and this year Toyota racers have had eight poles.  David Reutimann (Bristol) and Brandon Whitt (Memphis) have each registered the first pole positions of their NCTS careers this season.  Along with the two first-time pole-winners, teammates Mike Skinner (California, Texas, Charlotte and Nashville) and Bill Lester (Kansas and Kentucky) at Bill Davis Racing have combined for six Toyota poles in 2005.

KATRINA RELIEF:  Toyota companies announced contributions totaling $5,000,000 directed to disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina, which recently struck a devastating blow to the U.S. Gulf Coast.  In addition to Toyota's contribution, Toyota Financial Services and Lexus Financial Services will assist finance and lease customers affected by Hurricane Katrina and affected Lexus Pursuits Visa® Card customers may receive an extension on payments.

DRIVER DEBUT:  Justin Hobgood will make his NCTS debut at Richmond driving the No. 9 Germain Racing Tundra.
