Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the most physically and mentally challenging tracks on the Craftsman Truck Series schedule, especially for rookies. Todd Kluever did not look like a rookie Wednesday night when he completed every lap, finished 13th and did not get a dent in the truck until the final lap.
Kluever qualified 16th for the 200-lap event, but had problems from the start. Throughout the entire race his brakes were not working correctly. The team encountered the same problem during practice earlier in the day, but was unable to correct the problem. When the race began, Kluever was forced to pump the brakes on the front and back stretch every lap to get the brakes up for each corner. The brakes never improved, so Kluever fought that problem the entire race.
The No. 50 World Financial Group Ford F-150 was a little loose on the entry and exit of the corners so the team planned a track bar adjustment for the first pit stop. Kluever was able to move up to 15th by the fourth caution which brought the lead-lap trucks down pit road on lap 69. The team gave him four tires, fuel and dropped the track bar in 16.5 seconds. The quick stop helped him gain three positions in the pits to return to the race in 12th place.
After one more caution, the race stayed green for 100 laps. Kluever was able to maintain his 12th-place position, and actually moved into 11th place with 25 laps to go. He had a shot to get into the top 10, but got caught behind two lapped trucks. Mike Bliss and Matt Crafton were able to get by Kluever before he could clear the lapped trucks, which put him back in 13th.
The final caution of the night came on lap 188 when Dennis Setzer hit the wall. This moved Kluever up to 12th when the race resumed with five laps to go. With everyone fighting for position, Kluever was shuffled back to 14th with two to go, but fought back to finish the race in 13th place. Mike Skinner won the race after leading 190 laps.
"All in all it was a fair night for us," Kluever said. "The World Financial Group Ford F-150 was decent, but not spectacular. Brake problems all day really hurt us. We started the race and the truck had no brakes. I had to pump them up on the straightaways every lap. There's too much going on here to be pumping your brakes and trying to drive one of these things and race. This is definitely a place where the more laps you run the more you learn. There's a reason why you see so many Nextel Cup veterans running up front here. We struggled a little bit tonight, but we'll be a lot better when we come back next year."
Kluever advanced another position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings and is currently 12th, only 59 points out of 10th place. He continues to lead the Raybestos Rookie of the Year point standings.
