Benny Parsons, an analyst for TNT and NBC, will be inducted into the Motorsports Racing Hall of Fame of America on Thursday August 18, at the State Theatre in Detroit, just five miles from where his racing career started on Six Mile and Woodward in 1960. Joining Parsons among the nine inductees are Indianapolis 500 winner Tom Sneva, and LeMans 24-hour king Hurley Haywood. The weekend will be a busy one for Parsons, the 1973 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Champion and 1975 Daytona 500 winner, who will call two races on TNT; the NASCAR Busch Series Domino's Pizza 250 on Saturday at 3 pm ET, and the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series from Michigan presented by Transporter 2 on Sunday at 2:00 pm ET.
"This being in Michigan really gives it added significance, because this is where it all started," said Parsons "There will be a lot of people in attendance that were on my side since my first race, and that holds special meaning to me."
"Benny is one of the all-time great drivers and class people in NASCAR history and we are truly proud of him and all of his accomplishments," said Jeff Behnke, Senior Vice President and Coordinating Producer for Turner Sports.
Parsons, a former taxi cab driver prior to his impressive accomplishments in NASCAR, earned 21 wins in NASCAR's elite series, 199 Top-5 finishes, and 283 Top-10 finishes in a career that spanned over 20 years (1964, 1969-88). Parsons has also been inducted into the Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame (1998), the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (1994) and the Court of Legends in Charlotte, NC (1994). His work as a broadcaster has been equally successful, garnering him a National Sports Emmy in 1996 for his work on ESPN's NASCAR coverage.
Parsons will be joined in TNT's booth on Saturday and Sunday by pre-race host and play-by-play announcer Bill Weber, who will host Sunday's Bank of America Countdown to Green pre-race show on 1:30 p.m. ET, along with fellow analyst Wally Dallenbach. TNT's pit reporters Allen Bestwick, Dave Burns, Marty Snider and Matt Yocum will provide viewers with the storylines surrounding both the NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races. Joining Dallenbach for a ridealong in his signature Wally's World segment will be CNN Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who's show "NASCAR: Driven to Extremes" premiers on CNN on Sunday, September 25 at 10 pm ET.
