The ARCA RE/MAX Series regulars threw everything they had at him, but in the end, no one had anything for Penske Racing powerhouse Travis Kvapil.
Kvapil, in his career-first RE/MAX Series start, handily won the Pocono ARCA 200 Saturday afternoon at Pocono Raceway finishing just over two seconds of veteran Frank Kimmel.
"It's kind of cool to come to a series and a racetrack for the first time and have a victory," said Kvapil. "Obviously we came as probably well prepared as a team could come with Penske Jasper Racing behind me and Kodak on the car. We were here just to get me laps; get me seat time. Every lap I was learning something, trying a little bit different line here or there."
Kimmel, in the Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford, came from one lap down to finish second.
"I think it just shows the strength of the team," said Kimmel. "We went through a tremendous amount of adversity with the motor overheating and the tire going down under green."
Rookie Joey Miller, in the Country Joe Homes-Eagle Creek Aviation Dodge, chased Kimmel to the final stripe in third.
"You know we had a good car all day," said Miller. "We had to somehow beat the 27 (Kvapil) and the 46 (Kimmel), so we came in for a complete stop (near the end). It was really a good points day overall for us; we're looking forward to Michigan."
Even though Miller finished one spot behind Kimmel, he still gained ten points on the six-time series champ by qualifying second and leading laps, narrowing the points gap to 35 headed to Michigan June 17 for the Hantz Group 200.
Chad McCumbee, in Andy Hillenburg's Fast Track Driving School Chevrolet, finished a career-best fourth ahead of Michael Guerity, who steered the Hantz Group Dodge home in fifth, the last car on the lead lap.
In all, Kvapil, who also won the Pork Pole Award, led 56 of 80 laps en route to the winner's circle earning the ReadyHosting.com Lap Leader award. Miller, who was the Highest Finishing Rookie and the Weld Wheels Halfway Lap Leader, led 13. McCumbee managed to lead eight laps. Ken Weaver led three.
Although Kimmel was never far from the front, an unscheduled pit stop under green for a flat left-front tire, as well as overheating issues, caused the Tri-State Motorsports team to go a lap down early on. But Kimmel battled back, got back on the lead lap and chased down the leaders in time to challenge.
Christi Passmore finished sixth in the GAP Roofing-Asphalt & Fuel Supply Ford ahead of Kyle Krisiloff, who finished seventh in the ditech.com Chevrolet. Todd Bowsher finished a solid eighth in the Safe Auto Insurance Ford. Jason Jarrett finished ninth in the Central Merchant Services Chevrolet with Bobby Gerhart trailing in 10th in the Lucas Oil Chevrolet.
Darrell Basham, who started 30th and finished 14th, earned the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger honors for advancing the most positions.
