Chaffin, No. 30 Toyota Recap: Dover
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Chad Chaffin had high hopes entering Dover this past week as he returned to the site of his first career series win.  But the misfortunes continued for the veteran racer as a front end failure led to a broken wheel on his No. 30 Toyota Tundra.  The result at the end of the day was a disappointing 23rd place finish in the running of the MBNA RacePoints 200 at the one-mile oval of the Dover International Speedway.

"I am not sure what to say," said Chaffin.  "We had some type of failure on the right front of our Tundra and that led to the wheel breaking into about four pieces.  We did get lucky in that we got a timely caution and were able to get down pit road before we had a big mess on the track.  It is so disappointing as it seems that we have had about every type of problem imaginable happen to us so far this season."

Chaffin started the 200 lap event from the 14th starting spot as a result of his qualifying effort on Thursday.  Chad and his team would have to wait an additional 24 hours to attack the "Monster Mile" with rain postponing the event until Saturday afternoon.

When the green flag finally flew, Chaffin would dodge a first lap accident that occurred directly in front of his No. 30 Tundra.  The skirmish did result in some minor damage to the rear bumper cover on his truck and led to a quick trip down pit road to remove the hanging sheet metal.  Back to green flag racing Chad battled his way through the field with a pit stop on lap 38 for four fresh tires, fuel and a minor adjustment.

On lap 60, Chad radioed back to his crew that he felt a vibration on the right front of his Toyota Tundra.  The veteran driver would do his best with the condition during a long green flag run.  A timely caution on lap 110 allowed Chaffin to bring his truck down pit road under caution but a few laps were lost to the leaders as repairs were made to the right front of the No. 30 truck.  Subsequently, the last half of the race relegated driver and team to avoiding any late race accidents and bringing home their equipment to the best finish possible.

The 23rd place finish dropped Chaffin two spots to the 16th position in the overall driver's standings.

"We just need to forget about these bad races and focus on what races we have ahead of us," stated Chad.  "This has been a very disappointing start to the season for me as well as this team but we just need to keep ourselves focused and have confidence in what we are doing."
