Dover International Speedway did not get the nickname "The Monster Mile" for no reason. Ricky Craven and the No. 99 Superchips Ford team fought the "Monster" all weekend, bringing home another Top-10 finish for their efforts and ended up with another top-10 finish in a backup truck.
Craven's weekend got off to a bad start on Thursday when he ran over debris and blew a right-front tire in the middle of turns one and two. Luckily Craven was not injured, but the same could not be said for the truck. The team pulled out the backup and worked as long as NASCAR would allow them to get it ready for the race. The team was not able to qualify and used a provisional to start the race in 35th place. As if that weren't enough, rain postponed the race until Saturday afternoon which was about 24 hours later than it was scheduled to begin.
Craven had to be on his toes early in the race starting that far back. He locked up the brakes for a five-truck accident in front of him on the first lap of the race. He was afraid he had flat-spotted the tires, so he brought the No. 99 Superchips Ford F-150 into the pits for new tires.
The truck was tight so when another caution came on lap 11 Craven brought the truck into the pits again for a track bar adjustment since they were already in the back of the field. As he left pit road, he was penalized for speeding and forced to pit again for a stop-and-go penalty the next lap. Craven was 30th when the race resumed on lap 14.
He began to work his way up through the field and was 23rd when the third caution of the day came on lap 37. Craven pitted with the leaders for new tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment. The team had a quick 15.69-second pit stop which gave Craven six positions in the pits and sent him out in 17th place.
Craven was on a mission and moved into 10th place just before the halfway point of the race on lap 97. Another caution came on lap 111, and rather than pit with the leaders Craven and the team decided to stay out and lead a lap to gain five bonus points before they pitted. Once Craven led lap 113, he pitted on lap 114 for air pressure and wedge adjustments.
He ran in 11th place for the next several laps, but the truck was still tight. When NASCAR threw the caution for debris on lap 147 Craven made his final pit stop of the day. The team gave him new tires and raised the track bar three rounds, and he returned to the race in 12th place with 51 laps to go.
Craven continued to pick off positions and was in the top 10 again by lap 170. He used the final 30 laps to gain a few more spots and finished the race in seventh place. Kyle Busch won his second consecutive race.
"It was just a great effort this weekend," Craven said. "The team worked hard from the moment we blew the tire on Thursday and they never stopped working. The truck was tight throughout the race, but I'm really proud of how we ran considering we were in a backup truck and we didn't get to put any laps on it before the race. This proves that this is a championship-caliber team."
Craven moved up one position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings to second, only 20 points behind Ted Musgrave who still leads. The next race will be on Friday, June 10 at Texas Motor Speedway. It will be televised live on Speed Channel at 9:15 p.m. (EDT).
