The MBNA Race Points 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Dover International Speedway, originally scheduled for 4:45 P.M. Eastern this afternoon, has been postponed by rain. The race is now rescheduled for 9:00 A.M. Eastern on Saturday, now scheduled to be the opening act of a doubleheader. The NASCAR Busch Series is also scheduled to race at Dover on Saturday afternoon.
Clouds hovered overhead throughout yesterday's practice and qualifying sessions, but the weather never took a turn for the worse. All on-track activities were completed yesterday without interruption, however the inclement weather moved in overnight and brought all activity at the track to halt.
All on-track activity set for Friday at Dover was canceled, including two NASCAR Nextel Cup Series practice sessions, NASCAR Busch Series qualifying, and NASCAR Nextel Cup Series qualifying. NASCAR officials had held out hope that the NCTS race would come off on Friday, but the weather system that brought the rain stalled over the Mid-Atlantic region. A window of dry air remained over the Chesapeake Bay, just 30 miles away, but with the system overhead not moving as fast as was hoped the trailing rain cells eventually closed in and caused the postponement.
The postponement in Dover marks only the third time since 2001 that an NCTS race has not been run on it's originally scheduled date. Ironically the race that was rain delayed in 2001 was here in Dover. The last race to be postponed by weather was last fall in Darlington.
Speed Channel will have tape-delayed coverage of the MBNA Race Points 200 tomorrow evening at 7:30 pm ET.
