David Starr went out 34th of the 35 drivers that took qualifying runs for the MBNA Race Points 200, and the late draw was to his benefit as he knocked Terry Cook off the top spot to claim his first pole of the 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season at Dover International Speedway. Starr's lap of 22.846 seconds/157.577 miles per hour smashed the previous record set last season by Carl Edwards by almost seven-tenths of a second.
Cook, who was fastest in the final pre-qualifying practice, backed up his runner-up finish at Charlotte with an outside front row starting position for Dover. Cook's lap of 22.862 seconds/157.467 miles per hour was just sixteen-thousands of a second off Starr's record pace.
Three-time series champion Ron Hornaday was third, with rookie Timothy Peters in fourth. Charlotte winner Kyle Busch rounded out the top-5 as 29 drivers eclipsed the previous track record.
Mike Skinner, who led many laps here last season en route to a top-5 finish, will start sixth, with Bill Lester in seventh. Teammates David Reutimann and Robert Huffman were eighth and ninth, with Steve Park rounding out the top-10.
Former NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion Tony Stewart was eleventh, while three-time series champion Jack Sprague will start 12th. Defending race winner Chad Chaffin qualified 14th, while Johhny Benson was 15th. Defending series champion Bobby Hamilton will start 20th, and Dennis Setzer will go from 27th.
Ricky Craven, who crashed at the end of the final practice, did not make a qualifying attempt. All 36 trucks that are entered will start the race.
