Schrader Holds of Kimmel to Win Toledo ARCA Event

Two rain delays and more than a few fender benders made for a long day Sunday afternoon at Toledo Speedway, but the finish was well worth the wait.

ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran Ken Schrader, in his own Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet, squared off with fellow veteran Frank Kimmel in an epic short-track duel during the final 50 laps to win the hard-fought Hantz Group 200.

With Pork Pole award qualifying rained out, Schrader, by car owner points, came from the 27th starting position to earn his 12th career RE/MAX Series victory in his 36th attempt.

"I gotta thank Uncle Frank (Kimmel) for not jumping me on that last restart," said Schrader in victory lane. "He'll wiggle ya, but he won't wreck ya. Frank was a little better than we were today. But man, we sure didn't need that last restart."

A last lap caution prompted the 13th yellow flag of the race giving Kimmel one last good shot at Schrader, which he fully exploited. After getting a much better run off turn two on the final round, Kimmel, with more momentum, stuck a fender inside of Schrader in turn three only to see the door close as quickly as it opened. Kimmel, by choice, backed out of it and finished second in the Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford .236 seconds behind.

"We certainly could have forced the issue, but that happened to me a couple weeks ago, and I didn't like it, so we backed her down," said Kimmel. "We were a little faster; we just didn't win the race. More than anything, I want to thank all the fans who stuck in there through all the yellows and rain; we'll come back in the fall and put on a better show."

If there was something not up to par in the show, no one seemed to notice as not a sole was willing to leave until the duel was done.

After rain pushed back the initial start nearly two hours, Kimmel led at the onset up through lap 45 before another rain shower prompted series officials to put the red flag out and stop the race. After drying the track, Kimmel, with Chad Blount and Steven Wallace in tow, led up through lap 86 before coming to pit road for service. With most of the front-runners on pit road, including Schrader and Wallace, Blount stayed out and assumed the lead. Blount, with clear track ahead, pulled away by a half-straightaway while Kimmel, Schrader and Wallace charged back through the pack. Schrader eventually maneuvered underneath Kimmel in heavy traffic and began to reel in Blount, who by now was feeling the full effect of his older tires. Schrader finally overhauled Blount to lead the 141st lap and brought Kimmel along, setting up the ensuing battle.

Kimmel worked Schrader high and low in and out of traffic for more than 50 laps while Jason Jarrett, David Ragan and TJ Bell steered their way into the top-five. And while the racing was tight all the way back (14 cars finished on the lead lap), it was difficult to take your eyes off Schrader and Kimmel who raced inches apart for the final 50.

Jarrett, in the Venturini-owned Central Merchant Services-ReadyHosting.com Chevrolet, finished third. "Man I just love Toledo Speedway," said Jarrett. "This place reminds me of Hickory Motor Speedway back home, where I learned to race." It was Jarrett's fifth top-three finish at Toledo in six starts there.

Ragan, in the 31-W Insulation Pontiac, finished fourth. Bell, in the Heathcliff Cat Litter-DefiantClothing.com Chevrolet, charged from the 28th starting position to finish fifth.

Former USAC Sprint Car champion Brian Tyler, in his first RE/MAX Series start, finished sixth. Wallace, also in his first start, and with father Rusty Wallace watching, finished seventh. Leading Rookie of the Year candidate Joey Miller finished eighth. Blount, who earned the Weld Wheels Halfway Leader award, eventually pitted and raced back to finish ninth. Veteran Mark Gibson was tenth.

Schrader picked up the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger award for advancing the most positions while his crew chief Donnie Richeson earned the SK Hand Tool Crew Chief of the Race honors. Kimmel, who led the most laps with 86, was the ReadyHosting.com Lap Leader award winner.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series next visits Lanier Nat'l Speedway in Braselton, Georgia Saturday night, May 28 for the inaugural Williams Bros 200.
