Chevrolet Practice Notes: California

02-25-2005 | TruckSeries.com Report

DENNIS SETZER, NO. 46 CHEVROLET SILVERADO: "Our Chevrolet Silverado is pretty good in qualifying trim.  We chased it a lot in race trim.  We don't know how good we are there yet.  It is hard to say, we made some gains on it.  I will tell you tomorrow night after 200 miles here at California Speedway.

"I think we will qualify pretty good.  A few years ago I would have said that qualifying fifth wouldn't be very good but now with the level of the competition in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, a top-10 qualifying run is going to be very good. We were fifth after practice was completed but with the depth of this field, we are hoping to do better than that but we will just see tomorrow morning,

"The draft is important here but no near as much as Daytona.  You will run a lot faster lap by yourself here than you can at Daytona.  I guess we are running in the low 170 mph here.  You will run a lot faster in the draft here behind another truck but there is a bigger chance it will mess up your trucks handling ability whether you are the truck in front or back.  Your trucks handling ability is more important here than at Daytona.

"On the gear rule, there isn't much we can do, it makes our RCR motors work a little harder there but we let those guys take care of that part.  We just make the truck handle better in the corner and they take care of the rest."

DAVID STARR, NO. 75 SPEARS MANUFACTURING CHEVROLET SILVERADO:  "I have the right truck and my Chevy Silverado is pretty awesome.  We have a little more work to do after the last part of the final practice.  We put our old tires back on it to kind of simulate where the truck is going to be 40 laps in to the race tomorrow night and I was surprisingly loose in the center off the corners and that is not good here.

"I know Dave (McCarty, crew chief) and the guys are going to make some good changes.  Sometimes I get a little worked up for nothing and it will all be exactly right.

"It isn't bad, it was pretty good all day and at that point the tires were the oldest we had run. I just wasn't quite as happy with it as I was earlier.  I think it was just because the tires were old.  I know McCarty is going to work his magic and we should have something in this Spears Silverado for a good run for a win or a solid top-three finish."

RON HORNADAY, NO. 6 GM GOODWRENCH CHEVROLET SILVERADO: "The GM Goodwrench Silverado is running good but I don't know where we are going to qualify.  Wally (Rogers, crew chief) and the guys have been working really really hard on it.  This truck has never been to the wind tunnel. I hope we are good in the race.  We will have to wait and see tomorrow night when we get in traffic and see what we have.

"All we did about qualifying today in practice was with tires and tape the nose off but we still didn't get quite the speed we need.  We have a lot of downforce in our Chevy Silverado and I don't think we are going to qualify that well, if we get a top-10, I will be really happy with that but I know we are going to race good.

"The draft here at California is not as big as it is at Daytona but it is big. If you get two trucks side-by-side and you get somebody pushing you, you can go right on by.

"The gear rule is something new and if I had my choice I would put a little more gear in it to help me up off the corner a little bit.  Right now it is momentum.  It is me learning these trucks a little bit. We have so much downforce in these Chevy Silverados.  Chevy has really done their homework and I have to really arc it in the corner to keep the thing free to use the horsepower I have.  Little learning experience for me and I hope I can learn it by lap 10 tomorrow night."

KELLY SUTTON, NO. 02 TEAM COPAXONE CHEVROLET SILVERADO:   "The truck felt pretty good in the first practice, but was tight out of two. I had to ease back into the throttle so the rear end did not break loose, and we lost some time there.

"The second practice was a bit of a struggle. The truck was getting pretty free on entry and through the center, and we noticed a tire going down. I went back out on the track, but just could not get a good handle on the truck. Come to find out, the left rear axle bolt had backed out.

REGAN SMITH, NO. 19 XPRESS MOTORSPORTS SILVERADO:  "We are ok in race trim but our bonsai qualifying run got messed up with other trucks so I am not totally sure how our No. 19 Silverado will be tomorrow morning.

"I just have to go out there and give it all I have so we can get in the race.  Then I know Doug (George, crew chief) and the Xpress Motorsports guys will be able to make the adjustments we need during the race to get us up front."
