This concludes Trackside LIVE!
presented by The Orleans from the Silverado 350 at Texas
Motor Speedway. Keep it locked here during the
week as we keep you updated on all the latest breaking news
from the Tough Trucks of NASCAR!
Travis Kvapil, #60 CAT Rental Store
Chevrolet:
"When we were
running second to Ted there, we had a first place race
truck. We were struggling with a little bit of an areo push
behind him. I said if we can get me out in front of him, we
can win this thing. As it turned out, we pitted under
caution and some guys took two tires. It’s the same thing
that happened in the spring and I never would have believed
it would have happened again. We were really hard on our
left front tires and we had cord showing but apparently
those guys made it work." (12:44 am ET)
Jason Small, #07 Sunbelt Rentals
Chevrolet:
"That is what this team needs to do. Just
turn as many laps as we can and log those top-15 finishes.
We weren't great tonight, but the truck was pretty darn
good. The best thing about tonight is that we had no
mistakes and the truck is on the trailer in one piece."
(12:43 am ET)
Jerry Hill, #79 RDS Engines
Dodge:
"The 11 truck blew up right in front of me and
we hit the oil. It was just a long, slow slide. But, we
ended up 18th, so it wasn't that bad of a night, overall."
(12:41 am ET)
Bobby Dotter, #08 Albertson's/People
Against Drugs Chevrolet:
"We got it running pretty
good there at the end. Not too bad for starting 28th. It
was a pretty good night all things considered." (12:40 am
ET)
Steve Portenga, #39 Roto Rooter
Chevrolet:
"We don't have motor trouble too often.
It's a shame too, because if we could have could have run
all night we would have probably been tenth or twelfth or
something close to that. I can't wait to get out to the
West coast, we have some really good tracks out there."
(12:39 am ET)
Lance Norick, #90 Express Personnel
Services Chevrolet:
"It felt like we hit something on
the track or something broke. I heard a big thud and it
went around on me. I am not hurt at all except for a little
bump on my elbow." (12:37 am ET)
Dennis Setzer, #46 Acxiom/Computer
Associates Chevrolet:
"A great race again here at
Texas. A very competitive race. The track's always in
great shape, same as it's always been. It's pretty racy,
two grooves wide a lot of times. Everything was good
tonight." (12:33 am ET)
Andy Houston,
five-time series
winner, will be in a truck for the first time since the end
of the 2000 season when the series stops at South Boston
next week. Houston will be in the #17 Harris Trucking
Dodge. (12:29 pm ET)
Coy Gibbs
and his father Joe
both left the track as soon as the checkered flag flew. Coy
and his wife Heather are expecting their first child at any
time, and they both wanted to get home as soon as possible
to be with her. (12:26 am ET)
Unofficial top-10 in points:
Bliss, Crawford, Musgrave,
Cook, Pressley, Starr, Leffler, Setzer,
Gibbs, Kvapil (12:11 am ET)
David Starr, #75 Spears
Manufacturing/Chasco Contractors Chevrolet:
"It's
another top-5 finish. I love this team, they are great. We
had a little mishap, and that's fine. We lose together and
we will win together. That was all we had. This series is
a tough series, anyone that can finish in the top five, that
is an accomplishment." (12:17 am ET)
Jason Leffler, #2 Team ASE/CarQuest
Dodge:
"The track was exactly the same as it was in
June. We couldn't get a handle on the truck all weekend.
It's a truck we struggled with before. The second groove
opens up for the Cup guys, but not for us. The race is
really short, and that's good. The team hasn't had really
good finishes here, there has always been some kind of
problem. I'm not sure what this will do to the points, but
it's not the finish we wanted. (12:15 am ET)
Brendan Gaughan
becomes the
first driver in the series' history to take the checkered
flag first two times at Texas Motor Speedway. (12:11 am ET)
Hearing some rumors on next year's
schedule...remember, these are ONLY rumors...one has the
series stopping at Martinsville twice next season, while
another has the series not going to Pikes Peak. Also, the
rumored event at Bristol may not be as likely as some
believe, although there are more rumors saying the NCTS WILL
be there than will not. (12:10 am ET)
Post race notes and quotes from the
Silverado 350...
Coy Gibbs, #20 MBNA America
Chevrolet:
"We had a good truck. These guys did a
great job. I had one shot at getting under him and I kinda
blew it. We had just as good a truck as anyone. It was all
track position. Who ever got out in front was going to win
this thing." (12:06 am ET)
Brendan Gaughan, #62 NAPA Auto
Parts/The Orleans Dodge:
"The NAPA team rocks.
There's something about Texas. My dad is a cowboy, and I
like to claim to be a cowboy too. We love Texas. We've won
both Texas races and hopefully we'll win a lot more."
(12:04 am ET)
Ted Musgrave, #1 Mopar Performance
Parts Dodge:
"I had no idea if those tires would have
made it, but we were going to try. Either they would make
it or there would have been one heck of a wreck. As it
turned out, they made us go to the back of the line, so it
was no question to put on four fresh tires. If they
wouldn't have made me go to the back of the line we were
going to stay out and win this race." (12:02 am ET)
Mike Bliss, #16 IWX Motor
Freight/Knights Inn Chevrolet:
"I
just got killed on that last restart. I hate it when you
lose three or four positions on the final restart. It was my
mistake and that kind of stuff adds up at the end of the
season when you are in the middle of a points race. At least
we got a Top-10 finish out of it and the truck is in one
piece. We're still in the points lead even though we lost a
little bit today. That bothers me. We had a better truck
than that and I feel like that was my fault. We had a better
truck than that." (11:59 pm ET)
Terry Cook, #29 Power Stroke Diesel
Ford:
"The motor just fell apart. I'm not sure
exactly what happened. Ernie Elliott has given us great
motors all year long. We sure can't complain. But now we
are down to six races for the championship and we sure
didn't need to drop out of this race." (11:52 pm ET)
Don't forget, the broadcast of the
Silverado 350 from Texas Motor Speedway will be seen on ESPN
2 tonight on a tape-delayed basis. The broadcast is
scheduled to begin at 11:30 pm ET.
Ted Musgrave's #1 Mopar Performance
Dodge is currently back in the garage area after a minor
incident pushing it from that paddock to the grid. The left
front valence was dinged as the team pushed it up the hill.
They quickly returned to the garage area, chopped the
damaged valence off and replaced it. Team owner Jimmy Smith
expect no problems. "They'll get it fixed and we'll be
okay," he said. (7:57 pm ET)
Speaking of USAC Midgets, Amy East's
younger brother Bobby is currently fifth in the series
point standings. He will also be competing in the Indy Twin
25s. (6:04 pm ET)
#2 Team ASE/Carquest Dodge driver
Jason Leffler is entered to compete in the Indy Twin
25's at IRP on September 25th. The event pays $50,000 to
any driver that can win both 25-lap Midget features.
Leffler won the Night Before the 500 USAC Midget race at IRP
earlier this season. (6:02 pm ET)
Hearing preliminary numbers for the
entry list for the South Boston next weekend are over 40.
There very well could be over 45 teams on site attempting to
make the field there. (6:58 pm ET)
Weather radar shows some showers in the
area. There are dark clouds hovering nearby as well. No
one would mind a brief shower to cool things off a little as
temperatures and humidity have the heat index over 100
degrees. Most likely, any rain that were to fall would
likely only increase the humidity and make conditions more
miserable. (6:57 pm ET)
Several teams were making rear gear
changes in their pre-race preparations. Some simply did not
have enough top end speed, but others were turning too much
RPM in the draft. (6:53 pm ET)
Matt Crafton's
mother Jeannie
was taken to the hospital earlier this afternoon. She was
bitten by one of her pet dogs earlier this week and has
developed a blood infection as a result. NASCAR medical
liaison Lance Devin checked her out earlier this
afternoon and recommended a trip to the hospital. (6:48 pm
ET)
Rick Crawford, #14 Circle Bar Racing
Ford:
"This is a very special place for us. We don't
want to give away another one like we did here in June. Our
owner Tom Mitchell is from Texas and we have his son and
grandson with us here this weekend. We are gonna work hard
on putting this Circle Bar Ford in victory lane for them
tonight." (6:45 pm ET)
The #75 Spears Motorsports Chevy is
carrying Chasco Contractors on the quarter panels again this
weekend. Chasco is a long-time supporter of David
Starr's racing career. (6:43 pm ET)
Bob Keselowski, crew chief, #29
Power Stroke Diesel Ford:
"We haven't made a lot of
changes today. We were pretty good in happy hour last
night, we don't want to mess that up." (6:42 pm ET)
Jason Small
will do double duty
at Las Vegas next month. In addition to running the Sunbelt
Rentals Chevrolet in The Orleans 350, he will also run the
Winston West event on the 1.5-mile superspeedway. (6:41 pm
ET)
The Addington Racing team is still
diligently working on sponsorship for the 2003 season. "The
good thing about Addington Racing is that they are not just
a race team, there are some real business opportunities
involved there," said team public relations representative
Amber Moody. "They are working hard on it and hope to have
something by the time we get to Daytona next season." (6:39
pm ET)
The L&R Motorsports team is proud to
announce a new associate sponsor here this weekend. "We
have brought Love's Country Stores on board for the rest of
the season," said driver Lance Norick. "We made the
announcement on September 11th to prove to everyone that
these deals can still happen. We're glad to have them on
board and look forward to giving them a good show." (6:37
pm ET)
Bobby Dotter, #08 Albertson's/People
Against Drugs Chevrolet:
"We have changed just about
everything. We have changed four springs, four shocks, the
geometry in the front end. We changed the rear end hoping
to get a little more top end speed too. Hopefully we'll be
good tonight." (6:35 pm ET)
Here are the pit stall assignments,
starting with the turn one end of pit road on back towards
turn four:

Part-time NCTS television analyst and
former series champion Mike Skinner was injured in a
testing crash this week at Kansas Speedway. While the
injuries were not serious, he may need a replacement or
substitute for the Winston Cup event this weekend at
Loudon. (4:59 pm ET)
Many NCTS crew members departed the
track last night and crossed the parking lot to the Dirt
Track at Texas Motor Speedway for the World of Outlaws
sprint car show last evening. The Outlaws have moved out
and IMCA modifieds and stock cars are on the track tonight.
(4:47 pm ET)
Rick Ren
and crew are busy
working on the CAT Rental Stores Chevy, doing some major
reconstruction on the aero package hopping to give Travis
Kvapil a better aero bite in traffic. While not
confirmed, the team was seen working at the left front
corner, likely in hopes of giving the truck more left front
downforce which will help fight a loose condition in
traffic. (4:44 pm ET)
The Joe Gibbs Racing team is busy
changing a gear in the MBNA Chevrolet driven by Coy
Gibbs. The team felt the gear change would help Coy get
off the corners a little better. Traffic will play a major
role in the race and if they can get an advantage off the
corner, they feel they have a good chance to score Coy's
first NCTS victory tonight. (4:41 pm ET)
Matt Crafton will start the
Silverado 350 from the back of the pack following an engine
change in the Menards/SealMaster Chevy. The primary engine
spun a bearing and was not repairable. (4:37 pm ET)
Dennis Setzer,
driver of the
Acxiom Chevrolet, is the only driver to have scored two
top-5 finishes in the fall NCTS event at Texas Motor
Speedway. He is also the only driver to have scored three
top-10 finishes. (1:58 pm ET)
According to one source in the garage,
who wants to remain nameless, the success the Chevrolet
teams had in qualifying could be the only success they see
during the weekend.
"The teams tested at Atlanta last week
and what they came up with was to pull in the left front
fender. It makes the truck fast by itself, but when it gets
in traffic, it will skate up the track. They may go out and
lead early, but as the race goes on, the Fords and the
Dodges will get stronger where the Chevrolets could get a
lot worse." (1:38 pm ET)
Good afternoon from Texas Motor
Speedway! Well, okay, the hotel is within site of Texas
Motor Speedway. The track does not open until 3 pm ET
today, and the teams will have about five hours to work on
massaging their trucks for the Silverado 350 which takes the
green at 9 pm ET tonight. The air is thick with humidity,
and it is warm and hazy, virtually the same conditions as
yesterday. We will see what happens with the weather, there
are no showers in the area now, but some could pop up and
the afternoon continues.
This concludes Trackside Live!
presented by The Orleans for the practice and qualifying
sessions for the Silverado 350 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Coverage from the garage will resume tomorrow afternoon as
the teams return to work at preparing their cars for high
speed battle on Texas Motor Speedway's 24-degree banks.
Jerry Hill, #79 AmeriSuites
Dodge:
"It just got loose on me. We either had a
right rear go down or I lost it. We have a backup we are
getting ready, but it is a real shame, because we had our
best qualifying run of the year, and now we have to go to
the back anyway." (10:19 pm ET)
Max Jones, Team Manager, #50 US Navy
Ford:
"It just got away from him. It wasn't really
that badly damaged, but just bad enough that we wouldn't get
back out there tonight, so we went to the backup." (10:18 pm
ET)
Bobby Dotter, #08 Albertsons/People
Against Drugs Chevrolet:
"We thought we would be
really good off the truck. But, we've struggled. We will
work on it overnight and see what we can come up with. We
should be okay." (10:16 pm ET)
Jason Small, #07 Sunbelt Rentals
Chevrolet:
"It just jumped loose on me on that second
lap. We tried to get a little better lap down, but once
that happens, you just pull it in. No need risking
something on a deal like that. We have been loose all day
on stickers, so we need to work on scuffing some tires in
for the race tomorrow." (10:15 pm ET)
Steve Portenga, #39 Roto Rooter
Chevrolet:
"We had a good run here in June. If it
wasn't for the Hutter horsepower we have under the hood, we
would really be struggling. They have really helped us stay
afloat. When you have Winston Cup guys looking under the
hood to see what you are running, you know you are doing
something right." (10:13 pm ET)
The top-20 with fifteen minutes left in
Final Practice:
Cook, Gaughan, Starr, Bliss,
Musgrave
Gibbs, Crawford, Setzer,
Edwards, Norick
Leffler, Kvapil, Ruttman,
Lester, Portenga
Pressley, Crafton, Small,
Wood, Keller (9:38 pm ET)
The Mittler Bros. Racing team has
called it quits after only 40 minutes of happy hour. "Let's
take it to the house, boys," said team owner Mike Mittler.
"You guys have all done a great job today. Let's put it
away and come back and get them tomorrow. I am really proud
of you all."
The Roush Racing team is working
feverously to return the backup #50 US Navy Ford back to the
track in hopes of getting Jon Wood at least one or two laps
of practice. "That would help us immensely," said crew
chief Jeff Campey. (9:29 pm ET)
The fastest line so far in happy hour
seems to be pegged right down on the white line. Trucks
that drift up out of the preferred groove are quickly
freight trained and go to the back of the line in no time at
all. Teams that have their trucks set up to pass low off the
turns will have a great advantage in tomorrow's race. (9:26
pm ET)
Matt Crafton, #88 Menards/ColorPave
Chevrolet:
"Qualifying was okay. I don't know if the
track is slower than when we practiced. We made some
changes and we'll make some more changes during happy hour
and hope to get the Menards Chevy a little faster in race
conditions." (9:23 pm ET)
With the limited track time in happy
hour, the top-10 after 30 minutes are:
Cook, Bliss, Musgrave,
Gibbs, Crawford
Edwards, Starr, Norick,
Setzer, Ruttman (9:21 pm ET)
Track conditions are green once again.
(9:20 pm ET)
Brendan Gaughan, #62 NAPA/The
Orleans Dodge:
"I am not entirely upset with
qualifying fifth. We finally had a shot for the pole, and
that's what the NAPA gang came here to do. So we gave it a
chance. I ran that lap with a dead, flat foot. Those other
makes are just really tough right now." (9:19 pm ET)
Trucks were back on the speedway
briefly, but Jon Wood has spun and crashed the #50 US
Navy Ford off of turn two. There appears to be minimal
damage, and Wood has driven the truck back to the garage.
There is damage to the hood and the left front fender. The
team will have to evaluate the damage and make the decision
to repair the truck or revert to a back-up. (9:16 pm ET)
UPDATE: The team has made the decision to throw
the cover over the primary truck and prepare the backup in
hopes of getting back out before the end of happy hour
practice. (9:18 pm ET)
Bill Lester, #8 Dodge Motorsports
Dodge:
"I was hoping to qualify on the front row. We
were really shooting for the pole. I wanted to reward the
team for all their hard work this season. We've had a lot
of unfortunate incidents this season, and they deserve
better than they have gotten. The important thing is to get
a good finish in the race tomorrow." (9:13 pm ET)
Robert Pressley, #18 Square D/Dickies
Dodge:
"We ran what we ran in practice, so we backed
it up. I don't know where Mike Bliss came up with that
time, but he gave everyone something to shoot for. We
worked more on race stuff than we did for qualifying.
Whenever you are at Texas, you have to be able to hold the
throttle on the mat all night long, and that's what we
worked on." (9:11 pm ET)
Ted Musgrave, #1 Mopar Performance
Dodge:
"We worked a lot on our qualifying setup, but
it didn't turn out like we hoped. Our qualifying time was
as fast as we could run. We ran flat out for two laps and
it's not at all good enough for the front row. We better go
back and do our homework for the race tomorrow." (9:09 pm
ET)
Jason Leffler, #2 Team ASE/CarQuest
Dodge:
"We put all we had into our qualifying lap. I
mean, we were just running wide open on the bottom. As far
as practice went, we were just working on trying to get our
truck where we need it to be." (9:07 pm ET)
Red Flag at Texas! Jerry Hill
has spun the #79 AmeriSuites/RDS Engines Dodge off of turn
two and took a long lazy slide down to the inside wall in
the middle of the backstretch. Hill is out of the truck and
appears to be unijured. No report yet on how severe the
damage is to the truck. (9:05 pm ET)
Jon Wood, #50 US Navy Ford:
"I am not really satisfied. It would have been good to have
been able to run both of my practice qualifiers in practice
to know a little more about what we had. The first time I
got held up behind two slower trucks, and the second time, I
thought something was wrong with the engine. It turned out
it wasn't, it was something with the transmission. We'll
get it right for happy hour." (9:00 pm ET)
Rick Crawford, #14 Circle Bar Racing
Ford:
"I was flat out in qualifying and really had a
nice qualifying effort, probably one of the best we've had
since we've been coming to Texas. It's like the grip in the
track went away, but I don't know what it is. There are a
lot of the teams in the garage that try to reinvent the
wheel. the truck they run here in June might not be the one
they bring back in the fall. They probably raced in
somewhere else and said 'hey, that might work in Texas' and
it won't. If you stay within grasp of what that piece of
iron wants and what the driver is looking for, then you'll
be fast here because the driver has to run here wide open."
(8:55 pm ET)
Jim Rosenblum, Team Owner, #28 FDNY
Chevrolet:
"We all have strong ties to the city (NYC)
and all of know guys who lost their lives at the World Trade
Center. We're trying to help the families an way we can.
We started out the year at Daytona and ran Darlington and
Martinsville, but we depend on contributions of others to
help pay the bills, otherwise it's coming out of our
pockets. We're going to Vegas where we are getting some
help from the New York, New York hotel and casino. We'd
like to have a good showing and people to visit the
website. Obviously it's a great cause. Seems the least we
could do for what these guys did." (8:49 pm ET)
Barry Bodine, #25 Landlock Marine
Transport Chevrolet:
"We blew the engine. Usually
you get a bit of a vibration or something, but this time it
just went boom. We had changed a few things and the truck
feels real good, so we'll pull that motor out and put a new
one in. Better it happened now than in the race with other
guys around me." (8:44 pm ET)
To match with Bliss's pole, David
Starr's outside row one starting position produces the
same front row as the Federated 200 at Nashville
Superspeedway. (8:39 pm ET)
With his third Bud Pole Award of the
2002 season, Mike Bliss is now tied with Joe
Ruttman for second all-time on the most career poles
list. Both drivers have 17, three shy of the record held by
three-time series champion Jack Sprague. (8:38 pm
ET)
NCTS final practice will run from 8:50
pm ET to 9:50 pm ET. Keep it locked on to TruckSeries.com
for all the news and notes from Trackside. (8:36 pm ET)
Carl Edwards, #63 Mittler Bros.
Ford:
"That was pretty neat. I left a little bit on
the table; I screwed up one and two, but three and four went
perfectly. I'm telling you, to come to a race track like
this and feel this comfortable after that few of laps, it
says a lot about Mike Mittler and this team." (8:32 pm ET)
Terry Cook, #29 Power Stroke Diesel
Ford:
"We are a lot more confident than we have been
in the past. I am very pleased, most of the guys were going
on scuffs, and we thought that might hurt us, and it may
have a little bit for speed. The truck drove real nice, it
was flat on the mat for two laps. When you are tight on a
track like this, it can drop two- or three-tenths of a
second per lap, and that looks like what the case might be
(with us). (8:30 pm ET)
Bill Lester, #8 Dodge Motorsports
Dodge:
"We are really excited. This is one of my
favorite tracks. We had out best finish here in June, and
we are long overdue for that first top-10 finish. We think
we can get it done here. We had some bad luck last week at
Richmond, and we thought we have a good chance for a top-10
there too. Once we get over that hump, we think it will be
a snowball effect and they will keep coming and coming."
(7:16 pm ET)
Joe Ruttman, #4 Square D/BHR
Dodge:
"The truck drives really good, but it seems
like we need some more speed. It doesn't feel like a
horsepower problem, it feels like a body drag problem. It
may not be the greatest qualifying package, but it probably
will help us a little bit when the race starts." (7:14 pm
ET)
Carl Edwards, #63 Mittler Bros.
Ford:
"I was here with Tony (Roper) when he crashed
here in 2000. I onlyu knew him a few weeks, but he was just
a super nice guy. He had helped me out the very first time
I tested for the Mittler Brothers while he was still the
driver. He didn't have any obligation to me, but he helped
me get comfortable, and we got to be pretty quick friends.
I was here helping the team out as a grunt that day he had
his accident, and that morning he was out showing me the
line and how to get around this place. This is a
bittersweet time for me. I am really glad to be here, but
we will always have Tony on our minds every time we come
here." (7:13 pm ET)
Doug Keller, #27 Keller Motorsports
Chevrolet:
"We are decent I guess. We had some good
runs with the ARCA car on the dirt, but there is absolutely
nothing we can transfer over to this. This is the truck
that Coy (Gibbs) had an accident with at Phoenix, and it is
just a really good piece. We had a new front clip put on it
and it has been great ever since. We have another car we
bought from Gibbs, one that was crashed here at Texas in
2000. We would like to get that one ready to take out to
Vegas and Fontana later this year." (7:10 pm ET)
Aaron Daniel, #11 Chick Motorsports
Ford:
"We were on a mock qualifying run and it just
got a little warm. I saw the temperature creeping up and
had it shut down, but we still blew out a little water. We
want to make some laps and get some experience, but we
really want to finish better than we did here last time. We
were 19th, and we would really like to crack the top-15."
(7:07 pm ET)
The #25 team is currently swapping the
engine out of their machine. The team has been excused for
qualifying, and will have to line up at the tail due to the
engine change per NASCAR rules. (6:59 pm ET)
Practice has ended with no major
on-track incidents. Only three red flags stopped the
action, one for rain, two for engine fluids on the track.
(6:02 pm ET)
With mere seconds left in the session,
the top 20 are:
Musgrave, Gaughan, Starr,
Lester, Bliss
Gibbs, Crawford, Cook,
Setzer, Edwards
Pressley, Leffler,
MacDonald, Norick, Kvapil
Crafton, Small, Wood,
Portenga, Ruttman
Bill Lester
is on the move!
Lester just moved the #8 Dodge Motorsports Dodge into the
top-5 for the first time today. (5:58 pm ET)
Qualifying has now been rescheduled for
7:30 pm ET by the track and NASCAR. (5:46 pm ET)
Trucks are back on the track, no oil
dry laid down as the water simply evaporated. (5:45 pm
ET)
Quick look at the top-10 during the red
flag period:
Musgrave, Gaughan, Bliss,
Gibbs, Starr
Crawford, Cook, Lester,
Edwards, Setzer (5:44 pm ET)
Red flag is out, again for fluid
dropped on the track. The #11 Chick Motorsports Ford of
Aaron Daniel was trailing smoke, and the track crew is now
out inspecting the surface. (5:42 pm ET) Track crew
reports that the fluid is water, which means either a
radiator line came loose or the truck simply overheated.
Musgrave back on top of the speed
chart! Here is the top-20:
Musgrave, Gaughan, Bliss,
Gibbs, Starr
Crawford, Cook, Lester,
Setzer, Pressley
Norick, Kvapil, Crafton,
Small, Leffler
Wood, MacDonald, Edwards,
Hooper, Ruttman (5:40 pm ET)
Bud Haefele
is at the track this
week assisting the #11 Chick Motorsports team and driver
Aaron Daniel. Haefele, former shop foreman and later
Truck chief for Liberty Racing, is reunited with the truck
Daniel is driving, Bully, which is one of the former Liberty
trucks. The truck was built in 1998, and is one of the
trucks driven by Kevin Harvick in his tenure with the team.
Last weekend, Haefele directed Andy Carroll's effort in the
Hooter's Cup Series event at Motordrome Speedway . (5:31 pm
ET)

The track has gone green after cleanup
of the Bodine engine situation. (5:15 pm ET)
The red flag is out at TMS, but not for
the weather. Smoke from the #25 Landlock Marine Transport
Chevrolet of Barry Bodine has brought the track crews
out for a quick inspection. Early reports have the problem
as engine failure as there is a steady stream of oil
trailing the car from the track, through the garage to the
team's stall. (5:08 pm ET) UPDATE: The oil from the
25 truck is all over the backstretch and has covered the
apron along turns three and four. The track will likely be
down for several minutes for cleanup. (5:11 pm ET)
There is a report of some light
sprinkles falling in the garage area again. (4:05 pm ET)
Three drivers have yet to take to the
speedway in the practice session: Patrick Lawler, Phil
Bonifield, and David Hall. (5:03 pm ET)
Terry Cook
had a busy morning as
well. Cook took some time to speak with diesel students
from Lincoln Tech, and gave them some insight on what they
can expect upon gradutation. Before he hit the big time as
a professional race driver, Cook was a diesel mechanic
himself. Cook also introduced the students to the new 6
liter Power Stroke Diesel engine that was introduced in
August at the Power Stroke Diesel 200 at IRP. (5:00 pm ET)

Hearing an announcement on Coy
Gibbs' immediate future in NASCAR will be made sometime
within the next few weeks. (4:42 pm ET)
Trucks are back on the track! Matt
Crafton was the first one back out. (4:39 pm ET)
NCTS practice will now run through 6 pm
ET, with qualifying at 7 pm ET. (4:37 pm ET)
The trucks are now staging on pit road,
waiting for the resumption of practice. (4:37 pm ET)
Petty Enterprises will field a second
truck for Adam Clarke again next week in South
Boston. Clarke has been an instructor for Petty Driving
Experience for the past four and a half years. The team
would like to have Clarke in the seat next season in the
NCTS, depending on sponsorship. (4:36 pm ET)
Practice will resume in five minutes
according to NASCAR. (3:34 pm ET)
Coy Gibbs
and Travis Kvapil
visited a local elementary school before on-track activities
started this afternoon. The two drivers explained to the
100 or so first graders the benefits of staying in school
and getting a quality education. One lucky student was able
to put on Coy's driving uniform, helmet, and gloves to see
what a driver has to wear on raceday. (4:33 pm ET)
Latest estimate from NASCAR and track
officials is that the track will be ready for competition in
15 minutes. (4:26 pm ET)
Track drying has progressed nicely, as
the groove has turned gray. Track officials are now working
on drying the upper lanes. (4:14 pm ET)
Track officials will send out the
dryers to help the sun bring the surface back into raceable
conditions. (4:04 pm ET)
Top-10 during the red flag delay:
Musgrave, Gaughan, Cook,
Gibbs, Setzer
Wood, Starr, Norick,
Contreras, Kvapil (3:53 pm ET)
Rain has stopped practice just 10
minutes into the session. According to the track, there is
still enough heat in the surface, that if it stopped raining
right now, the track would not take long to dry. The
weather radar shows a band of rain developing directly over
the speedway. If the wind picks up, the track may miss the
bulk of the rain. Stay locked on to Trackside Live! for
continuing updates from the track. (3:49 pm ET)
As of 3:38 pm ET, several drivers and
teams have reported light sprinkles on the speedway and in
the garage. There are some dark clouds hovering, but no
sign of any real heavy rain.
Practice has begun at TMS! June race
winner Brendan Gaughan was the first to take to the track
shortly after 3:31 pm ET. Updates from trackside will
continue throughout the 2 hour session. (3:32 pm ET)
Sometimes, it just doesn't pay to get
out of bed. As if Brian Rose wasn't having a bad
enough week with the fire that destroyed his family home in
Nashville, the transporter carrying the #15 Perry Connection
Fords was involved in a traffic accident last night within
sight of the speedway.
"Just about 15 miles from here, some
cattle were running loose across the highway, and it caused
a chain reaction crash. The hauler was right in the middle
of it. The tractor is crashed pretty badly. The truck came
loose up top and it smashed up some of the metal up around
the lounge area and dinged up the truck pretty bad too. The
valence is busted up and the left front fender is pretty bad
too. It just seems like one thing after another lately.
But, with all the stuff that has been going on, I have been
too busy to dwell on the bad things."
Earlier this week, an electrical short
in the attic of his family home sparked a fire that burned
the house to the ground. Rose lost almost all of his
personal belongings, including all of his racing trophies.
(3:31 pm ET)
Michael Dokken
will be making
his first start in the NCTS since Michigan in July. Driving
the Troxell Motorsports Chevrolet, Dokken will make his
second career start at TMS, and his first since the
inaugural event here in 1997. (2:46 pm ET)
Hometown favorite David Starr
enters the Silverado 350 on the heels of three consecutive
top-5 finishes at TMS. Many trackside observers consider
Starr one of the prohibitive favorites to win this weekend.
He probably has more laps around TMS than any of the
competition as he is a former driving school instructor
here. (2:42 pm ET)
Lance Norick has driven all
three makes here at TMS, Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet, and he
accomplished this feat in his first three starts at the
track. In nine career starts here, Norick has been running
at the finish of every race. (2:38 pm ET)
Gaughan's fellow Raybestos Rookie of
the Year candidate Bill Lester returns to TMS looking
for that elusive first career top-10 finish. His prospects
look good as he finished 11th here in June. (2:36 pm ET)
O'Reilly 400 winner Brendan Gaughan
has an enviable record at TMS. He has two career starts
here, and his worst finish is second. However, he has
numerology working against him as he tries to put the
NAPA/The Orleans Dodge back in victory lane. In nine NCTS
races here at TMS, there has never been a repeat winner.
(2:34 pm ET)
Texas Motor Speedway was the site of
Terry Cook's first career top-10 finish in June of
1998. However, that and a sixth-place effort in October,
1999 are his only top-10 finishes at TMS. In both races
last year, Cook was snakebit, leading 34 laps in the spring
before a dry fuel cell relegated him to 13th. In the fall,
he led five laps before an engine problem sent him hard in
the turn one wall. In June 2002, Cook stuck oil in practice
and wrecked his primary truck, then was caught up in an
early race tangle that left the Power Stroke Diesel Ford
with some serious aerodynamic problems. Cook needs to break
that streak of bad luck to hold serve with series points
leader Mike Bliss if he wants to stay within striking
distance for the series championship. (2:31 pm ET)
Ultra Motorsports dominated this event
last fall with Scott Riggs and Ted Musgrave
leading the majority of the laps. Ultra's duo this season,
Musgrave and Jason Leffler, have combined to lead
over 1000 miles of the possible 3168.79 that have been
completed so far this season. Do not be surprised to see
the #1 and #2 Dodges at the front of the pack when the green
flag falls tomorrow evening. (2:23 pm ET)
Only Terry Cook, Rick Crawford,
and Lance Norick have started all nine NCTS events at
Texas Motor Speedway. Cook's best finish is sixth (10/99),
Crawford's best is second (10/01), and Norick's best finish
is fifth (10/01). (2:20 pm ET)
Matt Crafton
is still walking
with a limp after a hard crash at Richmond last week
resulted in a sprained foot. "The foot feels a lot better
and the bruise has pretty much gone away. It is still a
little swollen, so I have a hard time wearing regular
shoes. It shouldn't bother me in the truck, though."
Crafton's fiance', Jocelyn Janusiewicz, made her
racing debut at Sandusky Speedway last weekend. After a
first lap bump sent her spinning, she recovered to finish
fifth in the track's four-cylinder hobby stock class. (2:17
pm ET)
Only 35 teams are entered for the
Silverado 350, meaning unless there is some sort of incident
on the track during practice or qualifying, every driver
entered should make the field. (1:40 pm ET)
Welcome to Trackside Live! presented
by The Orleans from the Texas Motor Speedway! The teams are
about an hour away from taking to the track in preparation
for this evening's qualifying for the Silverado 350. It is
hot, hazy, and humid in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, which may
lead to some pop-up showers and storms as the day
progresses, but the weather is clear for now and there is no
rain on the horizon. Keep it locked on to TruckSeries.com
for all the news, notes, and quotes from the garage as the
day progresses. (1:31 pm ET)
