This concludes Trackside LIVE from
South Boston Speedway.
Ryan Hemphill, #4 BHR Dodge:
"The secret today was staying on the lead lap. We had some
bad luck and hard to start last, but we had great pit stops
that kept us on the lead lap all day." (6:52 pm ET)
Lance Norick, #90 Express Personnel
Services Chevrolet:
"We
didn’t qualify where we wanted, we knew we were a lot better
than that. We had a caution early on and came in. We ended
up going a lap down in the pits and worked our way back up
to be in contention to get out front on a restart. We did
and I ended up getting the lap back. We raced hard all day
but we just ended up having to keep coming back into the
pits for some fender rubbing. Other than that, the Express
Personnel Services team had a good day." (6:50 pm ET)
Travis Kvapil, #60 CAT Rental Store
Chevrolet:
"It’s
definitely been a roller coaster year but we had a good
truck today in practice. The driver screwed up in
qualifying and got us way back in the hole for the start of
the race. We didn’t change anything for the race, we made a
few adjustments in the pits and went a long way on that last
set of tires. I think if we’d have been able to come in for
one last set of adjustments, the CAT Rental Store Chevrolet
might have been in Victory Lane today but we’ll take another
top-five and be happy with it." (6:49 pm ET)
Coy Gibbs, #20 MBNA America
Chevrolet:
"We had a good set of
tires, we just didn’t have a really good truck early on.
When we put the new tires on, it was pretty good, so we went
the whole distance. We had a good finish in fourth and
probably would have gotten knocked out of the way by Travis
in a few more laps. Fourth is a good run for us and I don’t
have a whole lot of experience at these short tracks. I was
hoping we could hold onto third but Crawford got us there on
that last restart. I’m really proud of the guys." (6:48 pm
ET)
Brendan Gaughan, #62 NAPA Dodge:
"Dennis Setzer gave me a great lesson on short track
racing. If you notice guys like Rusty Wallace and Jeff
Gordon, they do a bump and run like it is a thing of
beauty. They never hit anyone hard, and they never do it
going into the corner. The guy that got me didn't do it
that way. We got hit going into the corner and it took us
out. But, I am not complaining. That is short track racing
I guess. But I sure won't forget, I'll tell you that.
We'll keep that one in the back of our minds for sure."
(6:46 pm ET)
Regan Smith, #63 MB Motorsports
Ford:
"We got turned around down there and I think
the motor might have been overrevved. It ended up dropping
a valve and we were done for the day. Hopefully we will get
to come back and play with these guys again sometime soon."
(6"43 pm ET)
Jon Wood, #50 US Navy Ford:
"We lost a lot of track position early. We had a bad set of
tires, and we got them changed and it was a lot better. It
wasn't a bad day at all. Happy to get out of here in one
piece." (6:42 pm ET)
David Starr, #75 Spears MFG.
Chevrolet:
"The tire strategy was great. It just got
loose on me. It about jumped out from under me there going
into three once. Lapped traffic was really bad, so we just
tried to stay out of trouble and come out with a good
finish. We are here to get wins, but we will take these
top-5s and top-10s anyday." (6:40 pm ET)
Jason Leffler, #2 Team ASE/CarQuest
Dodge:
"The track just greased over. It was hard to
get any traction after that guy oiled the track down. We
will be running the Indy Twin 25's this weekend for Keith
Kunz. He won the Chili Bowl with Tony Stewart this season,
so we think we can go there and be competitive." (6:38 pm
ET)
Steve Portenga, #39 Roto Rooter
Chevrolet:
"I like this place. It is not as tight as
I thought it would be. It looks a lot narrower on
television. We were just too tight at the start, but we
hung in there all day and had a good finish. This Hutter
motor really got us to the end. But man, these guys were
just Roto Rootering the heck out of us today." (6:36 pm ET)
Jason Small, #07 Sunbelt
Rentals/Lucas Oil Chevrolet:
"I don't know how some
of these guys get approved to run. The guy just flat out
put me in the fence. He never even turned. We are working
hard to get back into the top-20 in points, and this really
hurts." (6:34 pm ET)
Andy Houston, #17 Hardee's Dodge:
"This thing ran exactly 250 laps. The sad part is it
went into overtime! The alternator went out and it just
drained the battery. That is a real shame too, because we
were thinking we would have had a top-10 r top-15 finish.
It would be nice to get back into a truck full time. We are
working on some things, maybe we will be back before the end
of the season. We sure hope so." (6:33 pm ET)
Matt Crafton, #88 Menards/Colorpave
Chevrolet:
"We ran out of tires at the end. Had we
known about the long runs, we would have come back in and
changed tires. But we were very good on the short run and
we figured there would have been more cautions." (6:31 pm
ET)
Rick Crawford, #14 Circle Bar Racing
Ford:
"We picked up some points on the guys that
finished behind us, but that 16 picked up some on us. That
is okay, we will get him." (6:30 pm ET)
Brian Sockwell, #54 Lowdermilk
Electric Chevy:
"There was a wreck on the backstretch
and the guy came across the track and just nudged my right
rear and put me into a spin. We went back out and then a
starter wire shorted out on us. We probably shouldn't have
gone back out, we had nothing to gain and everything to
lose, but that's what racers do." (6:28 pm ET)
Trackside Live is announcing a $100
fine to the #93 Troxell Motorsports team for not announcing
Brad Bennett was in their truck all day today, not
Michael Dokken as we were all lead to believe. The check
can be made out to Charles Krall, care of TruckSeries.com...
(2:04 pm ET)
Musgrave's pole position is the second
pole he has won on a short track in the Commonwealth of
Virginia this season. He also qualified on the pole at
Martinsville earlier this season. (1:44 pm ET)
Drivers that did not qualify for the
Hardee's 250 are:
Jeremy Thompson (-0.030
seconds)
Dude Teate (-0.046
seconds)
Jay Sherston (-0.230
seconds)
Bob Coffey, Jr. (-0.507
seconds)
James Stephenson (-0.705
seconds) (1:40 pm ET)
Brad Daugherty, former NBA
superstar and former co-owner of Liberty Racing, is
wandering the pits visiting with old friends. Daugherty got
his start in racing as a fan in this region, and was
involved with Robert Pressley's father Bob in the
late 1980s before moving on to co-ownership of a Truck
Series team. (1:35 pm ET)
Three rookies had great qualifying
runs. Jamey Caudill will start from the 10th
position, while Ryan Hemphill has qualified 12th.
Hemphill will have to start from the back after changing a
motor in practice. Tommy Pistone III also had a great
qualifying effort and will roll off from the 19th position.
(1:32 pm ET)
Only half a second covers the top 32
starters on the grid for the Hardee's 250. Jeremy Thompson,
the last driver to be bumped from the starting lineup,
missed making the show by just three one-hundredths of a
second. (1:31 pm ET)
Coy Gibbs, #20 MBNA America
Chevrolet:
"We repalced the front shocks and springs
and really got the truck pretty good. Right when we went
out to do our bonzai qualifying run, that 59 spun down in
the corner. We never figured it out exactly right, but we
are pretty close and should be good for the race." (1:28 pm
ET)
Houghston Caldwell, jackman for
Travis Kvapil, is engaged to be married at the end of
this month. Wedding bells will also be ringing for Shane
Wilson, crew chief for Brendan Gaughan. Shane is
now engaged to be married in the early part of 2003. (1:27
pm ET)
Jay Sherston, #30 Great Lakes Ford
Ford:
"I guess we should have called it quits a
little earlier. We had the truck where we wanted it right
before that crash happened." (1:23 pm ET)
Brian Sockwell, #54 Lowdermilk
Electric Chevrolet:
"We scuffed the wall in
practice. I guess I was too busy looking in the grandstands
or something. Good that we got that out of the way early.
There isn't any real damage or anything, so we should be
okay for the race." (1:22 pm ET)
Dennis Setzer, #46 Acxiom
Chevrolet:
"Ted and I both ran the same as we did in
practice. We are looking for something, and we just haven't
quite found it yet. We will make some adjustments in the
race and get it right. This is the kind of places the Truck
Series needs to be, South Boston, the Nashville short
track. When I was in the Busch Series, I just couldn't wait
to get back to the hotel room to go and watch these trucks
on the short tracks." (1:20 pm ET)
Jeremy Thompson, #92 Valvoline/S&N
Cleaners Chevrolet:
"Monday through Friday, I am the
office manager for MB2 Motorsports and MBV Motorsports.
That is why we have some of the guys here helping me this
weekend. We have some of the backup crew guys and shop guys
helping out today. I got started out running some dirt late
models in Texas and have been running late models at Caraway
and even some ALl Pro stuff. We would like to get approved
to go run Phoenix and Homestead at the end of the year."
(1:18 pm ET)
Ted Musgrave, #1 Mopar Performance
Dodge:
"It is ice to go out and duplicate what we ran
in practice. Track position is very important. Being up
front is very important. Accomplishment number one is in
the books, now we need to go and take care of things in the
race." (1:16 pm ET)
Regan Smith, #63 Mittler Brothers
Racing Ford:
"We dropped a valve in practice and had
to change the motor. The truck is good. These are a lot
more fun to drive than a Hooters Cuo car. There is a lot
more power and grip. I just hate driving on bias ply
tires. That is all about who can slip and slide the best."
(1:14 pm ET)
Jimmy Hensley,
The Virginia
Gentleman, was seen walking the pits earlier this morning.
(1:12 pm ET)
There was a small fire on the #15 Perry
Connection Ford in practice. A wire burned off the air
cooler, filling the cockpit with smoke. Rose bailed out and
helped the safety crew get the fire extinguished. (1:11 pm
ET)
Qualifying is over...the trucks are now
impounded until the trucks are gridded for the start. (1:10
pm ET)
The McGlynn Motorsports team and driver
Ryan McGlynn is back at the track for the first time
since Loudon in July. The team has Pro Financial Services
on board for this race. Hearing the team is working very
hard on their Winston Cup program hoping to debut sometime
before the end of the season. (10:08 am ET)
The red and black flags are waving,
signifying the end of practice. Qualifying in the next
on-track activity, scheduled for noon ET.
The session will run until 10:05 am
ET.
The red flag has waved after a harmless
spin by Tommy Pistone III. The trucks are already back at
full speed. (10:02 am ET)

Red Flag out at So Bo once again!
Jay Sherston has backed his #30 Great Lakes Ford into the
turn three wall. There is some damage to the rear end of
the truck. It is not known whether or not the damage will
prevent the team from attempting a qualifying run. (9:51 am
ET)
Kenny Hemphill,
Ryan's dad, is a
veteran of five Winston Cup Series races. All of them came
in 1980, with a best finish of 9th at Michigan. (9:49 am ET)
Brian Rose pulled to a stop at
the Goodyear tire station with steam flowing out from under
the hood and out of the cockpit. Rose quickly popped out
and opened the hood hoping to get a flow of some cool air in
there to help ease the overheating condition. (9:31 am ET)
Bobby Hamilton Racing is still busy at
work changing the engine in the #4 Square D Dodge driven by
Ryan Hemphill. The team expects to get back on to the
speedway to get in some practice, but it may not be until
the session is nearly over. (9:29 am ET)

are some significant moves in the second half of the top-20.

repairing the minor damage to the right front corner of the
#15 Perry Connection Ford, and expects to have him back out
shortly. (9:19 am ET)
The #31 Eagle Jet International Ford is
currently behind the pit wall with the Brevak Racing team
busily changing the rear end gear. (9:17 am ET)
There have been some minor tweaks to
the appearance of some of the series' regulars this
weekend. The #88 Menards/Colorpave Chevrolet is running a
new style to their number, bringing them in line with the
numbers Team Menard uses in its other racing endeavors. The
#07 Sunbelt Rentals Chevrolet is all white this weekend with
bright day-glo red numbers.
Brendan Gaughan
took the #62
NAPA Dodge to The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on
Monday for some shake down runs. (9:06 am ET)
The Mittler Brothers Racing Team has
moved their #63 Ford behind pit wall and have it up on

Red flag
at SoBo, this time to
let the team members that needed to get out back in. (8:49
am ET)
The racing surface at South Boston
Speedway is somewhat altered from this race last year. Last
year, there was a continuous pit wall that lined the inside
of the speedway from turn 2 all the way around to the middle
of turn 1. This year, the pit wall has been reduced through
the middle of turn three through the exit of turn four. The
pit road will be managed just like it was at Bristol several
weeks ago for the Busch and Winston Cup races, with all
teams entering on the backstretch and exiting in turn one.
However, the reduction of the pit wall now gives drivers
additional space to work with both as a racing groove and as
an additional means of avoiding an accident. (8:48 am ET)
Red Flag again at SoBo.
The
haulers have been relocated outside the speedway in turn 2,
and the red flag was thrown to allow some team members to
cross the track to retrieve some needed equipment. The
green flag is again out. (8:44 am ET)
Brevak Racing is back for the first
time since IRP with Florida Sprint car ace Dude Teate
in the seat. (8:41 am ET)
The Xpress Motorsports team returns to
the site of their first NCTS start of 2001, where they
rejoined the series after a three-year stint in the Busch
Series. They joined up with Mike Bliss for the
NetZero 250 here last year, and return to the site of that
first race together as the series points leader. (8:39 am
ET)
The oil tank cover blew open on the #84
Bojangles Ford driven by local favorite Jamey Caudill.
Caudill brought the truck on to pit road to the
attention of the Long Brothers crew. The Long Brothers team
is locally based and has taken several of the local stars
into the truck series, most notably Scott Riggs. (8:35 am
ET)
There are only two drivers entered in
the Hardee's 250 that have ever won major events at South
Boston Speedway. Last year's NetZero 250 winner Ted
Musgrave and rookie Scott Kirkpatrick, who won the
Bailey's 300 in 2000. The Bailey's 300 is a major late
model stock car race that regularly draws over 100 cars from
all over the southeast. (8:33 am ET)
Aussie driver Adam Clarke is
again entered in the #45 Richard Petty Driving Experience
Dodge. (8:30 am ET)
The top-20 drivers after 25 minutes of
practice:
Setzer, Leffler, Bliss,
Musgrave, Crawford
Kvapil, Pressley, Crafton,
Wood, Gaughan
Starr, Cook, Sockwell,
Dotter, Lester
Rose, Clarke, Portenga,
Contreras, Gibbs (8:29 am ET)
Practice resumed briefly, but the red
flag came out just seconds later as debris was spotted on
the backstretch. (8:26 am ET)
Red Flag for BoCo at SoBo!
Bob
Coffey has brought out the red flag early in practice.
His#74 BoCo Performance Chevrolet appears to have a loose
fitting, possibly in the right front brake line. (8:25 am
ET)
Lance Norick is attempting to
start the 150th NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race of his
career. (8:22 am ET)
Veteran NASCAR driver and former Busch
Series champion Chuck Bown was seen in the pits
yesterday overseeing the preparation of the #59 Tiger Tom's
Race Cars and Parts Ford driven by Tommy Pistone III. "My
brother and I run a school for aspiring crew guys," Bown
said. "Tiger Tom called and asked if we could supply him
with some help. It is a good chance for them to get some
real life experience. I haven't retired from driving, but I
am not out there knocking on doors."
Red Flag at SoBo!
The #4 Square
D/BHR Dodge of Ryan Hemphill exploded a motor going into
turn three after only five minutes of practice. The team is
already hard at work changing the motor, but now will have
to go to the back for the start of this afternoon's race.
(8:15 am ET)
First on the track for practice this
morning was Terry Cook in the #29 Power Stroke Diesel Ford.
Good morning from the
South Boston Speedway! Skies are sunny (for now) and the
temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s. Practice is
already underway and updates start NOW! (8:12 am ET)
