This concludes Trackside LIVE! from
IRP. Live! Qualifying from the Nashville Superspeedway will
come at you Friday at 6:30 pm ET. In the meantime, keep it
locked at TruckSeries.com for the latest news at notes from
the Tough Trucks of NASCAR.
Rick Ren, crew chief, #60 CAT Rental
Stores Chevy:
"We had to use some pit strategy
tonight. I pitted it like it was a road course, we short
pitted. It was all we had, but we're happy with third for
tonight." (12:17 am ET)
Robert Pressley, #18 Dickies
Dodge:
"We wanted to be better, and I wish I could've
gotten up there and raced with Terry, but those cautions
really hurt us." (12:15 am ET)
Darrell Waltrip, #17 Tide Dodge:
"We thought we would just try to hang in there and get
to the end-we had to miss whatever happened on the last
lap-we could get a pretty good finish. Jeff made a great
call to get four tires and Larry made a great call to get me
through the wreck. We came home sixth, and that is a good
night. What a great time!" (12:13 am ET)
Jason Leffler, #2 Team ASE/CarQuest
Dodge:
"We were just off a little bit tonight. I
just wish we had half what the 29 is running as far as rules
and everything-we'd be set. I wish we could have taken the
win, but we'll take all the second-places we can get."
(12:11 am ET)
Rick Crawford, #14 Circle Bar/EJP
Ford:
"I don't know what happened in turn one. The
16 spun in front of me on the last lap and all I saw was
smoke. I floored it to try to get back around. He had me
pinned up by the wall and I just drove it out of there
because I wanted to finish the race. Our eighth-place truck
turned into an 11th-place truck."(12:09 am ET)
More updates from the Power Stroke
200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park after the race. (7:33 pm
ET)
Matt Crafton
will also have to
start at the tail after smacking the wall on his second
qualifying lap. NASCAR impounds the trucks after
qualifying, not allowing any work to be done between the
time the truck qualifies and the green flag. After allowing
the team to survey the damage, the decided to reset the
toe-in on the right front tire, forcing NASCAR to move them
to the back. (7:33 pm ET)
Breaking News! Ted Musgrave
will
have to surrender his seventh starting position and start
from the tail after missing the driver's meeting. Also
going to the back: Blake Mallory and Brian Ross, also for
being late to the driver's meeting. (7:30 pm ET)
The latest weather report indicates a
thunderstorm is tracking towards IRP, and it should arrive
within 20 minutes. If it does arrive, it is expected to be
hard, but brief. Stay tuned to Trackside Live! for breaking
Chuck on Trucks Doppler Weather Radar as it breaks. (5:16
pm ET)
The #79 RDS Dodge of Jerry Hill
is changing motors. Their backup engine was in the #55 of
Tom Powers. Powers has decided to withdraw his entry
after the damage to his truck was found to me more severe
than originally anticipated. So, they are pulling the
engine out of the #55 to put into the #79. (3:37 pm ET)
Loni Richardson
had an
adventurous practice session. "I don't know what happened
on that deal with Dennis (Setzer). I slowed up to let him
go by me because I thought he was on a sticker run. He got
by me, but then when he passed me he just slowed and I
really didn't have anywhere to go. I tried to hit him
square in the tail so I wouldn't mess him up too much. We
knocked the radiator out and messed up the top of the nose,
but we have it fixed." (3:35 pm ET)
While discussing setup issues with his
team, one fan yelled for an autograph and soon there was a
mob surrounding three-time Winston Cup Series champion
Darrell Waltrip. The impromptu autograph session lasted
only a couple of moments, but left many fans with an
unforgettable memory. Waltrip says the truck is solid, but
they could have used a little more practice. He thinks they
will be "just fine for the race." (3:32 pm ET)
Who is Jody McCormick? "I have
driven a lot of Late Model Stock Car stuff in Carolina and
Virginia," he said. "We tried to run Martinsville and
Memphis, but didn't qualify. We are looking to run
Richmond, South Boston, and Homestead after this. Right now
I am working on getting approved for the bigger tracks.
NASCAR says if we stay out of trouble the next few races, we
should be a go for Homestead." (3:28 pm ET)
Former Super Bowl-winning place kicker
Mike Cofer is attempting to qualify for his first
NCTS race with the Long Brothers, the same team that brought
Scott Riggs to the NCTS in 1999. (3:26 pm ET)
Talk about a small world. David
Starr drove his first asphalt late model race in a car
owned by Blake Mallory's father. "I drove on the
dirt tracks around Houston and all over Texas, Louisiana,
and Oklahoma for a long time. The first asphalt car I ever
drove was Mr. Mallory's, and we've been after it ever
since. I think we will have a good run tonight. You need
to loosen it up for qualifying because they impound them
afterwards and the track will tighten up for the race. You
need to have a good qualifying run, but you have to leave
some room for some adjustibility too." (3:25 pm ET)
Robert Pressley
and Rick
Crawford were seen comparing notes after practice
concluded. (4:22 pm ET)
Carlos Contreras
has spoken.
Much like he did at Loudon, he has predicted Terry Cook
will win tonight's Power Stroke 200. In fact, Contreras
said Cook will win, "and win big." Cook was the dominant
truck in the afternoon's practice session, staying at the
top of the chart all session long. As is the norm at flat
tracks, the team has brought Droopy Dog, a drop snout
chassis. (4:21 pm ET)
Practice is over...no change at the
top, Terry Cook still fastest. A complete rundown will be
posted shortly. (3:05 pm ET)
More schedule rumors....now hearing
that the CTS will be part of The Winston weekend at Lowe's
Motor Speedway, possibly racing on Friday night. (2:58 pm
ET)
Hearing Bobby Hamilton, Jr. will
be at the wheel of the #4 BHR Dodge next weekend at
Nashville. (2:57 pm ET)
With just a few minutes left in
practice, the top-10 drivers are:
Cook, Leffler, Crawford,
Edwards, Wood
Gibbs, Hamilton, Starr, Bliss,
Petree (2:55 pm ET)
After one hour of practice, the top-20
are:
Cook, Bliss, Leffler, Crawford,
Crafton
Wood, Pressley, Musgrave, Starr,
Edwards
M. Wallace, Kvapil, Small,
Gibbs, Setzer
Petree, Hamilton, Lester, Ross,
Portenga (1:05 pm ET)
Another red flag, this time for
Jerry Hill who has apparently lost an engine in his #79
RDS Dodge.
The red flag is back out at IRP as Loni
Richardson has looped the #73 Intensitee Sportswear Chevy
going into turn three. The track crew will do a quick
inspection and practice will get back underway momentarily.
(1:39 pm ET)
A rundown of the top-20:
Cook, Crawford, Crafton,
Pressley, Wood
Bliss, Leffler, Starr, Kvapil,
Musgrave
Hamilton, Edwards, M. Wallace,
Setzer, Gibbs
Small, Ross, Dotter, Lester,
Petree (1:33 pm ET)
The red flag is out at IRP after Tom
Powers has scraped the wall in turn one. There is some
slight right rear damage to the #55 truck. The team is
evaluating the damage and hopes to have him back out soon.
(1:23 pm ET)
The top-5 drivers after 20 minutes are:
Terry Cook
Rick Crawford
Mike Bliss
Jason Leffler
David Starr
(1:20 pm ET)
Eight drivers are looking to make their
very first NCTS start tonight in the Power Stroke 200:
Andy Thurman
Jay Sherston
Dude Teate
Clay Collier
Blake Mallory
Brian Ross
Jody McCormick
Mike Cofer
(1:19 pm ET)
Look for Steve Portenga to have an
announcement at Nashville regarding his status with Roto
Rooter for 2003. (1:10 pm ET)
Practice is underway at IRP. The
session got off to a rocky start for Brendan Gaughan
who stalled on the backstretch to bring out a red flag.
Gaughan has apparently fixed the problem and is back on the
speedway. (1:08 pm ET)
Andy Thurman is now listed as
the driver for the #5 Rick Ware Racing Enterprises Dodge.
Thurman is a former instructor at the Fast Track Driving
School, and has brought along sponsorship this weekend from
Akita. (12:16 pm ET)
The #88 Menards/ColorPave Chevrolet
team will honor the late Kenny Irwin with a decal on both
sides of their truck tonight. Team members Gary Showalter,
Ed Riley, and Tim Stephens were members of Liberty Racing
when Irwin was driving the #98 Raybestos Ford. The two
teams were located just 30 miles apart in northern Ohio. In
preparation for the Power Stroke 200, the team attended a
weekly test and tune session at Lorain County Speedway on
Wednesday night. (12:14 pm ET)
The Official Entry List released this
morning indicates that Bobby Hamilton will be driving
the #4 Square D Dodge in tonight's race. Team officials
have not yet commented on the status of Brian Rose with the
team, but rumors are circulating that he has been released
with from the team. (12:10 pm ET)
Brian Ross
won the USAR Hooter's
Cup Series race at IRP earlier this year, and has parlayed
that victory into a ride for tonight's Power Stroke 200.
Ross is in the #70 Bailey Excavating Ford that was driven at
Martinsville by Jeff Finley. The truck was purchased from
HS Die, which was the team Tim Steele drove for in his
aborted NCTS effort in 1999. Though the truck is several
years old, it has only been raced one other time, that being
the previous race this season at Martinsville. Steele's
crew chief, Tom Sokoloski, who was instrumental in
originally building the truck, will serve as crew chief.
(12:07 pm ET)
Three-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series
champion Darrell Waltrip is sporting a familiar look
on the #17 Tide Dodge. The paint scheme is the same as it
was in 1989 when DW won the Daytona 500, sporting the "Tide
with Bleach" brand on the hood. (12:00 pm ET)
Fellow sprint-car driver Dude Teate
is also here this weekend, driving the #31 Eagle Jet
International Ford for Brevak Racing. Teate is a veteran,
and past champion, of the TBARA winged sprint series in
Florida. This will be his first stock car race in nearly 10
years. Teate won the TBARA event at New Smyrna Speedway
during SpeedWeeks. (11:58 am ET)
The #51 Ware Racing Enterprises Dodge
will be driven this weekend by Blake Mallory, who has
spent some time earlier this season in the World of
Outlaws. The team tested this week at Caraway Speedway, and
has sponsorship support this weekend from shoptheowl.com, a
website that sells overruns scratch-and-dent items from
Sam's Club. (11:53 am ET)
Good morning
from Indianapolis Raceway Park. The morning broke with
storms and rain, but a cold front has moved through and
skies are expected to be partly to mostly sunny this
afternoon and early evening. Updates from the garage area
will begin shortly. (11:37 am ET)
