2006: In racing terms, we are used to seeing race teams fight for tenths of a second and one or two extra horsepower. A strong engine produces around 800 horsepower and will top out at 190 miles per hour. At maximum thrust, the Discovery was being shot into space with 12,000,000 horsepower.
