2006:
In racing terms, we are used to seeing race teams fight for tenths of a second and one or two extra horsepower. A strong engine produces around 800 horsepower and will top out at 190 miles per hour. At maximum thrust, the Discovery was being shot into space with 12,000,000 horsepower. Once in orbit, it will make a complete "lap" around the earth, which is around 23,000 miles in circumference, in about 90 minutes.
