Saturday night’s Built Ford Tough 225 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Kentucky Speedway was a great way to kick off the second half of the season for the truckers. Not because it was the very best race of the season — it wasn’t — but because of what it set up for the stretch run. The truth is, Johnny Benson handily dominated the Kentucky proceedings, leading 94 of 150 laps in his Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra to best his Bill Davis Racing teammate, Michael Annett and the Pilot Travel Centers Toyota. No, the finish wasn’t an edge-of-your-seat thriller like Michigan or Mansfield. But the title race certainly seems as though it will be. Check this out: With 13 of 25 NCTS races in the books for 2008, Benson leads Matt Crafton by just one point and Ron Hornaday Jr. by five points. With Rick Crawford 92 points back in fourth, followed by Mike Skinner (-101) and Todd Bodine (-111), it truly is a six-way fight for the championship. That’s pretty remarkable, given that the season is past the midpoint.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams will tangle at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis Friday night, site of the Power Stroke Diesel 200, race No. 14 of 25 on the NCTS calendar this season. ORP is a place where the truck drivers definitely don't play nice together, a claustrophobic 0.686-mile oval where the trucks will be bumping and grinding all race long. If nothing else, Friday night's battle ought to shuffle the points standings again, given that the top three drivers are separated by all of five points. If recent history is any indication, the driver to watch for on Friday night will be Ron Hornaday Jr., the defending series champion and defending race winner. Hornaday, who trails Johnny Benson by just five points in the NCTS standings, led 90 laps last year and his No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado ought to be tough this time, too. Hornaday hasn't finished worse than third in the last three ORP Truck races. "ORP is one those tracks that fits Ron Hornaday's driving style perfectly," said Hornaday's crew chief, Rick Ren. "It's almost all about the driver at this track, but the truck has to be set up so your driver can be aggressive. The drivers that are aggressive are able to make their way up to the front at ORP."

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Bobby East put his No. 09 Ford on the Keystone Pole for tonight's Power Stroke Diesel 200 at O'Reilly Raceway Park. East turned a 22.740 second lap averaging 108.602 mph around the .686 oval located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jack Sprague qualified second in his No. 2 Chevrolet and Erik Darnell rolled his No. 99 Ford to third. Reigning champion Ron Hornaday, Jr., No. 33 Chevrolet, qualified fourth and Raybestos Rookie of the Year point leader Colin Braun rounded out the Top-5 in his No. 6 Ford. Current driver championship point leader Johnny Benson posted the best qualifying effort for Toyota. Benson will start eighth with a 22.882 second lap averaging 107.928 mph. Johnny Benson won Friday night's crash-filled Power Stroke Diesel 200 presented by AAA Hoosier Insurance at O'Reilly Raceway Park, race No. 14 of 25 on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule. Benson held off Ron Hornaday, Erik Darnell and Matt Crafton to win his second straight race and third of the season. "Johnny's got it going on," said Bill Davis, Benson's team owner, who won his 20th race as an NCTS team owner. The win was No. 12 for Benson as a driver. As the battle for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship continued to intensify, the points leaders slugged it out over one of the toughest short tracks on the circuit. And it was a typically brutal affair, with truck after truck making contact with ORP's walls or other trucks, or both. (Photo courtesy of Toyota Motorsports)
