Good Afternoon from Kentucky
07-13-2007 12:52 pm
Good afternoon from Kentucky Speedway! We are here preparing for round 13 of the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the Built Ford Tough 225. It will mark the eighth time the NCTS has raced here at the beautiful 1.5-mile tri-oval located between Cincinnati and Louisville. The clouds overhead opened up earlier this morning, delaying ARCA RE/MAX Series practice, but we should be on schedule for the remainder of the day. The clouds have parted and there is some sun shining down, and we expect temperatures to stay comnfortably in the low to mid 80s. Stick with us, we'll have all the news and notes from the garage and all the action on the track throughout the day.
Where Are They Now: Deborah Renshaw
07-13-2007 1:49 pm
Renshaw Makes her Second Start:
This Friday night's race at the Music City Motorplex will mark Deborah Renshaw's second start of the year behind the wheel of the No. 112 AskPatty.com Chevrolet. Renshaw, who raced for two years in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, hopes to get back there someday. "It's all about the money," explains Renshaw. "Sponsorship is the key to motorsports. I have been trying to land a sponsor to get back to the track, either in the Craftsman Truck Series or the Busch Series, but to this point, there have been no firm commitments and no firm sponsorship, other than maybe a one race deal."

Schrader a Rookie?
07-13-2007 2:36 pm
It's been a long, long time since Ken Schrader has been considered a rookie anywhere he's raced. With 908 starts spread throughout the NASCAR Nextel Cup, Busch, and Craftsman Truck Series since 1984 it's safe to say he's forgotten more about the sport of stock car racing than some people know. But here at Kentucky, there Schrader was bright and early today sitting in the rookie meeting. Why? With all those starts, and countless more in all of the other various minor levels of racing he also competes in, he's never raced here at Kentucky. While many drivers test here quite often, Schrader only has 30 laps here total. So in an effort to get more experience under his belt, Schrader will take part in today's rookie practice - but the one caveat to participating in that 30-minute session was they he join the other rookies and sit in on their pre-practice meeting.
Practice Under Way
07-13-2007 2:44 pm
After spending several moments behind the pace truck to gauge pit road speed, the lights on the track flashed green just moments ago and the first hour of practice is on the track in full force. The weather is still holding, partly clouding and temperatures in the low 80s making it very comfortable working conditions for everyone here at the track.

07-13-2007 3:03 pm
The first 20 minutes of practice are in the books without any incidents to report. Ted Musgrave is back in the No. 9 Toyota with a vengence as he leads the field with a 31.627 second lap. The No. 9 truck was at the front of the pack battling the No. 6 truck last race at Memphis, and it is the same story here so far as Travis Kvapil sits second at 31.654. There's still over a half an hour to go, and we'll have all the action for you as it happens.
Knupp Crashes in Four; Red Flag Out
07-13-2007 3:05 pm
Brandon Knupp has spun and crashed the No. 28 Chevrolet in turn four to bring out the red flag near the midpoint of the first practice for the Build Ford Tough 225. Knupp apparently lost control and slid to the bottom of turn four, fighting for control. As he turned to the right to correct the slide, the truck caught traction and shot him towards the outside wall. He again turned back to the left and tried to slow the truck down, but made contact with the right front corner. The truck suffered damage to the nose and right side, but Knupp was able to drive it back to the garage. We will try to get a word with Knupp and the team to ascertain what happened and the extent of the damage.

Chaffin in the No. 40 this Weekend - Maybe
07-13-2007 4:57 pm
Chad Chaffin again is slated to wheel the No. 40 Chevrolet for Key Motorsports this weekend. However, those plans could change dependent upon if he qualifies for the Cup race at Chicago. Brandon Miller will practice the No. 40 all day today, and will run the truck tomorrow if Chaffin cannot make it. If Chaffin does not qualify for the Cup race in Chicago, he will be here at the track at noon tomorrow and will take place in all scheduled track activity.
The Key Motorsports team is now utilizing DEI engines. Additionally, the team will be sponsored by The Westerman Companies in races at Kentucky, Indianapolis, and Nashville.

UPDATE: Final Practice Delayed
07-13-2007 6:25 pm
ARCA RE/MAX qualifying will be running long due to a crash. The SAFER barrier was damaged and track crews are in the process of repairing it.
There are still about 15 ARCA RE/MAX cars yet to qualify after the barrier is repaired.
We will, of course, update TrackSideLive! when the trucks will be able to return to the track, so keep it tuned here!
Track Still Quiet at Kentucky
07-13-2007 6:45 pm
We should he through with ARCA RE/MAX Series qualifying and ready to roll with the final 60 minutes of practice for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series' Built Ford Tough 225. However, that has not yet happened as Peter Shepherd had a hard crash on his qualifying run, damaging four sections of the SAFER barrier in turn two. Shepherd was unhurt in the crash, but the track safety crew has been hard at work replacing the damaged barriers so we can complete our track activity yet this evening. There is some rumbling in the garage area that practice could be delayed until tomorrow morning, but we have yet to hear any confirmation on that. The first of the 16 cars yet to make a qualifying attempt for the ARCA race has just left pit road. We will keep you informed of any changes to the competition schedule here at Kentucky Speedway.
Sauter Changes Engines
07-13-2007 6:50 pm
The extended break between practice sessions was a benefit to the Green Light Racing team and driver Tim Sauter.
"The engine blew right in the middle of the corner, followed by a whole bunch of oil," Sauter said as he assisted his team. "A rod came out of the bottom of the engine. It's bad luck, but we're fortunate it happened when it did and we could get it fixed."
The crew just buttoned up the hood moments ago and Sauter should be able to join the rest of the drivers for final practice in a matter of moments.
Final Practice Rockin' and Rollin' in Kentucky
07-13-2007 7:02 pm
The final ARCA car just took the checkered flag, and mere seconds later the first trucks rolled out for an abbeviated final practice for tomorrow's Built Ford Tough 225. The session will conclude at 7:45 pm ET, and of course we'll have all the action and periodic timing and scoring reports as well. Stick with us!
Backup Truck for Allen
07-13-2007 7:06 pm
The ThorSport team had to unload the backup truck after Willie Allen had a scrape with the wall in rookie practice.
"The throttle hung going into the turn and we smacked the fence with it," said an unhurt Allen.
The team has the backup truck unloaded and ready to go, and he currently sits 26th on the sheet in the early minutes of the final practice.

Knupp Finds Wall in Four Again
07-13-2007 7:42 pm
The Rosenblum/FDNY Racing team managed to get the No. 28 Chevrolet repaired and back on track in the final practice, but problems have again befallen driver Brandon Knupp as he has crashed for the second time in turn four. The truck spun and shot back up the track, making hard contact with the SAFER barrier. There is significant damage to the nose of the truck, and this might end the team's weekend as they do not have a backup on hand.
Knupp Crash Ends Practice
07-13-2007 7:46 pm
The Brandon Knupp crash brings final practice to an end. Ted Musgrave was at the top of the chart at the time of the crash. We'll have a complete timing and speed report posted to the event bot shortly.
Knupp Unhurt; Musgrave Audio Coming
07-13-2007 8:13 pm
Brandon Knupp was unhurt in his second crash of the day that ended practice. We caught up with Ted Musgrave and spoke to him about his truck being fastest in practice, and also about some of his fondest memories of NCTS chief starter Dennis James. That audio will be posted to the Sights and Sounds bot on the right side of the TrackSideLive! page.

That's going to do it for tonight here at the Kentucky Speedway. We'll rejoin you for Live! Bud Pole Qualifying tomorrow. Good night everybody!
Good Afternoon from Kentucky!
07-14-2007 2:12 pm
Good afternoon from Kentucky Speedway! It is another beautiful afternoon in the Bluegrass State with puffy white clouds scattered overhead and temperatures hovering in the mid 80s. There is a nice gentle breeze blowing through making it a very pleasant day here at the track.
The teams are busy with their final preparations before qualifying, with many of them already in the inspection line. We'll have all the news and notes from here at the track leading up to our Live! Bud Pole Qualifying coverage which will come your way at 4:30 pm ET this afternoon.
Stout May Run Talladega
07-14-2007 2:16 pm
Part-time NCTS competitor has two races left on his schedule for 2007, Nashville and Loudon, but that could change due to NASCAR clearing him to compete at Talladega.
"NASCAR just approved us to run at Talladega, so we're thinking we might change our schedule," Stout said. "We don't have a truck that we can just throw away (in the so-called "Big One") so we'd need to make some updates to one of the trucks we already have. We'd have to update the body on it and some other things and that could run about $15,000 which is a lot for our team. But if we ran Talladega and made the race we'd have a chance maybe to run in the lead pack. We'd like to do it, be we probably would have to take another one of our races off the schedule."
Brandon Miller to the No. 40
07-14-2007 2:21 pm
With Chad Chaffin safely in the Nextel Cup race at Chicagoland, he has decided to pass on making the trip down to Kentucky Speedway this afternoon. As a result, Brandon Miller - who subbed in the No. 40 Chevrolet yesterday - will get the call to qualify and run the Built Ford Tough 225 later on today.
FDNY Racing Withdraws
07-14-2007 2:28 pm
As a result of the second accident in practice yesterday, the No. 28 Chevrolet has been withdrawn from the competition this weekend. Brandon Knupp was not injured in the either of the crashes yesterday, but the damage done to the nose of the truck in the second crash was too much to be repaired and the team did not have a backup truck on hand.
We are hearing that Key Motorsports may unload the backup truck and re-number it No. 28. In a scenario like that, the truck would only be entered to fill the field and would likely pull off after just a couple of laps. We will get confirmation, either yes or no, from NASCAR as soon as we can.
Double Duty Drivers This Weekend
07-14-2007 2:42 pm
Josh Wise and Bryan Silas are the drivers doing double duty here at Kentucky, driving both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and in last night's ARCA RE/MAX Series race. Silas stayed out of trouble and come home eighth. Wise ran up front early, as high as third, but a blown right front tire sent him hard into the turn four wall and leaving him 34th at the finish.
Former NCTS driver Erin Crocker started from the pole and finished fifth. The race was won by Michael McDowell, his first career ARCA win. McDowell may have some NCTS races in his future, with a possible debut at Martinsville in the fall.
Off to Garage; Be Back Soon
07-14-2007 2:55 pm
We're going to head to the garage for some last minute pics and hopefully and audio clip or two. We'll return and update TrackSideLive! leading up to Live! Bud Pole Qualifying soon.
Pre-race Audio Coming

Three pre-race audio clips are on the way for your listening enjoyment! We talked to Ray Dunlap and previewed the Built Ford Tough 225, and followed it up with a chat with tonight's pole sitter Ryan Mathews. We also tracked down Jon Wood and talked to him about his health and his return to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Also don't forget we have our exclusive TruckShots! photo gallery as well as the VPS Motorimages gallery for you to browse through as well.
To the Back
07-14-2007 7:02 pm
Two drivers have already been confirmed to be dropping to the back of the field for the initial start tonight: third-place starter Jack Sprague will start from the rear for going to a backup truck after qualifying, while 26th-place starter Tim Sauter will also drop to the back after changing an engine yesterday in practice.
Willie Allen is also in a backup truck, but since he qualified the truck he intends to race he will not need to go to the back on the start.

Angelini to Stand In for James
07-14-2007 8:06 pm
In the absence of the late Dennis James, former NASCAR Southwest Series chief starter Mike Angleini will be atop the flagstand tonight. Angelini has worked in conjunction with the NCTS several times in years past, and last year was the flagman at the Toyota Showdown at Irwindale Speedway.
Built Ford Tough 225 Race Updates 1-10
07-14-2007 8:07 pm
10. Lap 8 - Skinner is back up front, with Darnell now inside Gaughan in a race for second.
9. Lap 6 - Gaughan leads Skinner, Darnell, Kvapil, Lester, Musgrave and Clanton as the top six have put some distance on McCumbee in seventh.
8. Lap 3 - Bodine comes to the pits for tires as Skinner sweeps low and takes the lead. Gaughan comes around the outside to make it a two wide race for the top spot on lap four. They are three wide for third through fifth at the stripe with Kvapil, Lester, and Darnell going at it.
7. Pace truck is off and the green flag is in the air. Mathews struggles to come through the gears and they scramble three wide into turn one. Lester takes the lead down the backstretch with skinner and Gaughan racing for second. Mathews crosses the stripe in eighth on lap one.
6. The second pace lap is complete. Lights off on the pace truck. Green flag next time to the stripe. The race distance is 150 laps/225 miles.
5. The first pace lap is now complete. The field is still in two groups setting their pit road speed. Safety vehicles are now moving into position, and we are a lap and a half away from the green flag.
4. The trucks are rolling off pit road. Drivers can index their steering wheel in turn three. Lights are on the pace truck so the drivers are now checking their tachs to set their pit road speed.
3. After crashing in qualifying, the Wyler team has unloaded their backup truck and got it through inspection and on the grid about 20 minutes before the command to start engines. The jet blowers are on the track now cleaning the surface prior to the trucks rolling off the grid on pit lane.
2. There is a great crowd on hand with an estimated 40,000+ in attendance tonight. The command to start engines has just been given and 35 trucks roar to life on pit road.
1. The invocation has been given and former American Idol winner Taylor Hicks has just performed a terrific rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Drivers are now buckling in to their trucks and we are just moments away from the command to start engines.
Built Ford Tough 225 Race Updates 11-20
07-14-2007 8:25 pm
20. Lap 30 - Shades of last season as Hornaday is already up to 12th after starting 21st. Skinner now leads Musgrave by 4.0 seconds. Kvapil, Gaughan, Bliss, Darnell, Lester, Clanton, Green and Mathews are the rest of the top ten.
19. Lap 28 - After going a lap down earlier, Bodine is now up to 21st. Sprague has moved to 19th after starting from the rear in his backup truck.
18. Lap 26 - Kvapil looks inside Gaughan down the frontstretch for third, but Gaughan holds the spot down the backstretch. Kvapil regroups and again makes the move down the frontstretch the next lap and takes the spot, moving Gaughan to fourth.
17. Lap 24 - Musgrave blows by Gaughan for second going into turn three. Kvapil now closes on Gaughan for third.
16. Lap 23 - As they race for position behind him, Skinner opens up a 2.4 second lead on Gaughan.
15. Lap 21 - Kvapil races inside Gaughan for second, but Musgrave looks to the inside and takes third while Gaughan holds second.
14. Lap 18 - Benson grabs a handful of steering wheel in turn two and loses three spots dropping to ninth.
13. Lap 16 - One to go signal is given. Skinner leads Gaughan, Darnell, Kvapil, Musgrave, Lester, Clanton, Benson, Bliss, Green, McCumbee, Starr, Mathews, Shepherd, Allen, Cook, Hornaday, Wise, Crafton, Sertzer, Bjorklund, Sprague, Miller, White, Wood, Stout, Sauter, Schrader, Kinser, Silas, Smith and Bodine. Darnell and Kvapil race side by side for third on the restart.
12. Lap 14 - A handful of drivers come to put road, including Silas, Wood, Smith, Stout, Sauter, Schrader, Kinser, and Bodine. Bodine will pick up the free pass. He came to the pits earlier with a shredded tire. Crawford goes to the garage and the team is hard at work trying to repair the damage to the right side.
11. Lap 10 - Skinner leads Gaughan by 1.2 seconds with Darnell, Kvapil, Musgrave, Lester, Clantin, Benson, Bliss, Green, and McCumbee behind. Crawford was racing inside of Mathews when he got sideways in turn four and slid up and smacked the wall hard, doing major damage to the No. 14 Ford. Caution is out for the first time tonight.
Built Ford Tough 225 Race Updates 21-30
07-14-2007 8:42 pm

Skinner takes over the lead with Green, Kvapil, Mathews, Clanton, Musgrave, Darnell, Bliss, Gaughan, Hornaday, Benson, Lester, Bodine, Crafton, Sprague, Starr, Wood, Wise, Allen, Schrader, and McCumbee on the lead lap. Kinser, Miller, Setzer, White, Stout, Silas, Sauter, and Smith one lap down.
28. Lap 52 - Cook took a wild ride, slamming into the wall nearly head on in the middle of turn two. Pits are open for lead lap trucks. We'll update the rundown once the field is set after stops.
27. Lap 50 - Mathews and Darnell continue to go at it for sixth. Bjorklund takes his truck behind the wall and the hood is up. Cook and Shepherd get tangled up off turn two and the caution is out for the second time. Cook has heavy damage to the right front with Shepherd damaged on the left front. Cook climbs out and appears uninjured. Shepherd drives his truck to the pits.
26. Skinner's blistering pace has him 4.2 seconds up on Musgrave. Setzer and Miller also drop off the lead lap. Schrader, Wise, Shepherd and Cook are next up on Skinner's hit list.
25. Lap 45 - After dropping to 13th on the initial start, Mathews has raced his way back to seventh. The top ten is Skinner, Musgrave, Kvapil, Bliss, Gaughan, Darnell, Mathews, Green, Clanton, and Benson.

39. Lap 73 - Setzer picks up the free pass and rejoins the lead lap. Lights are off on the pace truck. Green flag next time passed the flagstand.
38. Lap 70 - Skinner, Kvapil, and Green open up some distance on Musgrave in fourth. Bodine spins off turn two and makes some very slight contact with the inside wall. He has no significant damage and he drives away. Caution is out for the fifth time.

36. Lap 65 - Drivers continue to complain about track conditions in turn three. There was a crash in last night's ARCA race that left a lot of fuel and oil on the asphalt, and the track crews came in and washed the surface down with soap and water trying to get it clean.
35. Lap 63 - Restart. Kvapil sticks with Skinner down the backstretch but Skinner starts to open it up down the front. Musgrave moves under Clanton for fifth just before Wood loses it in turn three. 33. Lap 60 - Skinner is reporting oil through turns three and four, and is requesting NASCAR and track crews to inspect the track.
32. Lap 59 - Restart. Green looks low, but that opens the door for Kvapil to go to the outside and take second. Off turn four they go three wide with Setzer on the inside and he pushes up and bounces off Clanton before going into a smoky slide off to the infield grass. At the same time, Allen loses control in the center of turn three and also spins without contact. Caution is out for the third time. Kinser will receive the free pass. Pits are open and Benson, Kinser, Allen, Wood, and Setzer come down for service.
31. Lap 57 - Cook has been released from the infield care center. One to go signal has been given. White and McCumbee come to the pits for last minute stops for fuel.

Mike Skinner claimed his fourth win of the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season in dominant fashion, leading 133 of the 150 laps of the Built Ford Tough 225 at the Kentucky Speedway. Skinner was forced to endure a slew of mid-race cautions, but over the final green flag run was able to open up a 5.5 second lead on runner-up finisher Travis Kvapil. Ted Musgrave returned to the seat of the No. 9 Toyota and finished third, in front of first time pole winner Ryan Mathews and David Green.

Jon Wood had a great run at Kentucky, finishing sixth in the No. 21 Ford:
"I would have liked to got up and finished in the top five but beggers can't be chosers I guess. This was a great run for us, and a great run for the team overall. I was really happy to see Joey there behind me - especially that he was behind me! - but i just got too loose there at the end to stay up in the top five."
