Good Afternoon from Memphis!

06-29-2007  4:00 pm

Good afternoon the warm and humid Mid-South! The sun is shining brightly here in Memphis, but there are clouds brewing on the horizon and just like any day when the heat and humidity is this high, there is a chance for some pop-up thunderstorms. There is just a 30 percent chance of rain, but a 100 percent chance that the heat and humidity will make for miserable working conditions for the teams and drivers at the track this afternoon. We'll have complete coverage of today's three practice sessions, including timing and speed reports, and of course we'll immediately update any action on the track as it happens, so stick with us!

Memphis Track Facts

06-29-2007  4:57 pm

Memphis Motorsports Park is a 0.75-mile D-shaped oval. The turns are banked at a near-flat 11 degrees, with the straightaways banked at just 4 degrees which is just enough to allow any rain water to run to the bottom. The backstretch is 1,100 feet long and is the only truly straight section of the track.

MMP has been a part of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule since 1998.

Where Do You Want to Start?

06-29-2007  5:02 pm

There are 36 starting positions available tomorrow night during qualifying. However, if history means anything here at Memphis, if you want to go to victory lane you're going to need to qualify in the top five to make it happen. No driver has ever won the race here at Memphis with a starting position outside the top five.

1998 - Ron Hornaday, started third
1999 - Greg Biffle, started first
2000 - Jack Sprague, started fifth
2001 - Dennis Setzer, started fourth
2002 - Travis Kvapil, started third
2003 - Ted Musgrave, started third
2004 - Bobby Hamilton, started third
2005 - Brandon Whitt, started first
2006 - Jack Sprague, started first

Outside of races in 2000 and 2001, every winner has come from either first or third starting position. No winner has ever come from second starting position. We'll see during tomorrow's Live! Bud Pole Qualifying who will line up first and third and see of that streak continues here this weekend.

Repeat Winners?

06-29-2007  5:03 pm

There has been one repeat winner here at Memphis, that being Jack Sprague who won in 2000 and again last year in 2006. However, Sprague won driving for two different teams - Hendrick Motorsports in 2000 and Wyler Racing in 2006. Sprague is back again this year in the No. 60 Toyota for Wyler, and looking at the race history that means he likely will not go to victory lane again this year. No team owner has ever picked up more than one win in the NCTS' nine-year history at Memphis.

1998 - Dale Earnhardt Inc.
1999 - Roush Racing
2000 - Hendrick Motorsports
2001 - Morgan-Dollar Motorsports
2002 - Xpress Motorsports
2003 - Ultra Motorsports
2004 - Bobby Hamilton Racing
2005 - Clean Line Racing (now Red Horse Racing)
2006 - Wyler Racing

Low Pressure in Left Sides

06-29-2007  7:02 pm

If you have paid attention to NASCAR racing since the evolution and introduction of the radial tire, you've heard teams talk about starting on low tire pressure. The theory is they start on lower pressures and run a couple of laps and allow the heat generated to build to the optimal operating pressures. Here is what the tires look like before they go out on track. Notice the flex in the sidewall at the bottom:

Final Practice In the Books

06-29-2007  10:07 pm

Final practice has just concluded with Canadian rookie Peter Shepherd on top of the sheets. Brad Keselowski ended up second after leading the field most of the session, with Ron Hornaday, Willie Allen, and Matt Crafton rounding out the top five. We'll have a complete results sheet posted to the event bot and on the main page shortly.

Compton to Wheel No. 40

06-29-2007  10:24 pm

Stacy Compton was originally slated to drive the No. 40 Chevrolet only during today's practice and tomorrow's qualifying sessions in place of Chad Chaffin, but those plans have changed and Compton will now drive in the race as well. Chaffin will stay in New Hampshire and concentrate on his Cup car which he successfully qualified into Sunday's race.

“Stacy is a veteran in every sense of the word, and we know he can help us,” said crew chief Gary Showalter. “Chad was also a good fit for us, but it would have been very difficult for us to make both drivers comfortable in the same race truck considering their size differences and the amount of time we would have had to make seat adjustments in the truck – then there was the cost of getting him here. Curtis made the right decision to stay with one driver, and I think Stacy will do a good job for us,” Showalter added.

Bud Pole Qualifying at 6 pm ET. After we set the 36-truck starting field, we move into race mode for the O'Reilly 200.

The weather is the same as yesterday, warm and humid with a chance of thunderstorms. There are some t-storm watches in the area, but locals say the weather is loving to the south and we should be good to go throughout the day.

Stick around, we'll have complete coverage of all the activity from here at the track throughout the day.

Weather an Issue at MMP

06-30-2007  5:46 pm

We talked about the possibility of some thunderstorms when we started our updates earlier this afternoon, and it looks like the possibility has increased tremendously in the last hour. There is a severe storm warning for the counties surrounding the track, with heavy rain in several nearby communities. There has been some rain in some of the outlying parking lots, but so far the actual track area itself has stayed dry with the exception of some very light sprinkles. The tech line is still open as teams are preparing for qualifying, and we haven't yet heard an announcement regarding a delay or change to the afternoon schedule. We'll keep you abreast of the weather and how it's impacting us here at the track as best we can.

Backup Truck for the No. 00

06-30-2007  8:14 pm

After a crash in qualifying left his primary truck with a damaged rear clip, Ken Butler and the No. 00 Toyota team have had to pull out the backup truck for the O'Reilly 200. The crew is just about finished with the final preparations on the truck and should have it through tech and on the grid in plenty of time for the start of the race.

Weather Clearing; Green Slated for 9 pm ET

06-30-2007  8:19 pm

The clouds that threatened and loomed large over the Memphis Motorsports Park prior to and during qualifying have started to dissipate. In fact, as the Musco lights start to take effect there is some blue sky to be seen off in the distance. We should be good to go for a green flag dtart shortly after 9 P.M. Eastern.

Crawford Update

07-01-2007  12:53 am

Rick Crawford suffered some chemical burns to his backside after battery acid was sprayed throughout the cockpit after his lap 8 accident tonight. He was treated and released from the infield care center following the race.

"I had battery acid all over me," he said. "It looked like it exploded on the left rear and it was all over the inside of the truck. The tire took out the left side sheet metal, the battery, and all the interior sheet metal. The battery was destroyed but the motor kept running. We had to change the battery out, and I felt someone touch me on the pit stop. I know they didn't reach in the truck, so what it was they were reaching in trying to secure the battery on something. Then I knew the firewall and stuff was blown out of the truck."

07-01-2007  1:14 am

They are turning the lights off here at Memphis, and we need to call it a night. Again, Memphis Motorsports Park has given us one of the most dramatic races of the season. Congratulations go out to Travis Kvapil on his win tonight, but we also need to congratulate Brad Keselowski on a wonderful drive and his ability to handle defeat with dignity.

Thanks to Doug Franklin, Blake Johnson, and everyone here at MMP for their terrific hospitality and all the assistance they have provided throughout the weekend.

Please take the time to check out our overflowing image galleries! VPS Motorimages has provided us nearly 500 pics from throughout the weekend, and of course we have our own TruckShots! gallery for you to browse as well.
