Good Morning from California Speedway

02-22-2007  12:32 pm

Good morning everyone and welcome to TrackSideLive! coverage of the San Bernardino County 200 from here at California Speedway. It is a gray and foreboding day here in the Inland Empire, as overcast skies are here now and it could very well turn into a soaker throughout the day as rain has been forecast. It was wet at the hotel this morning, but everything is still bone dry here at the Speedway, so maybe we have a shot at getting practice in this afternoon. Regardless of what the weather does, we'll be here all day long to keep you abreast of what's going on in the garage area and hopefully out on the racetrack, so stick with us!

Off to the garage...

02-22-2007  1:16 pm

We're going to head over to the NCTS garage area and see what is happening over there first thing this morning. Even with the gray skies and threat of rain, no doubt the teams are busy preparing or the first scheduled practice at 5 pm ET this afternoon. We''ll get some TruckShots! and see if we can track down some of the newsmakers of the week and post up some new audio as well. Stick around...

Weather Update

02-22-2007  2:45 pm

While we have been dry most of the morning here at California Speedway, within the past few minutes it has started to rain steadily here at the track. There had been a light mist falling as we patrolled the garage earlier, but nothing that impaired anyone's work and certainly nothing that dampened the track. The raindrops now have changed all of that, and if it continues for an extended period we could be looking at a delay in the start of practice. Click on the image below to visit the weather.com forecast page for Fontana, California. An FYI, California Speedway is located just to the west of San Bernardino.

Entry List Update

02-22-2007  3:12 pm

Wayne Edwards is here with the No. 95 Upshaw Motorsports Ford to bring our entry list up to 34 trucks. Also, Morgan Shepherd will pilot the No. 44 Key Motorsports Chevrolet. As noted earlier in the week, Kevin Harvick and Mark Martin are both entered to pick up where they left off in the Daytona 500; Harvick is entered in his own No. 2 Chevrolet while Martin is in the No. 21 Ford. Carl Edwards is back for a second tour of duty in the No. 50 Ford as the team seeks to build a solid foundation for rookie Peter Shepherd later in the season. Casey Kingsland is in the No. 7 Chevrolet after passing the wheel to Derrike Cope at Daytona. Kelly Bires moves over to the No. 16 Ford, allowing Mark Martin to take the wheel of the No. 21 Ford this week.

Rain, Rain has Gone Away

02-22-2007  3:42 pm

The rain that swept in about 30 minutes ago has moved out of the area, and things are drying up here at the track. If things stay dry for the foreseeable future we should be good for an on-time start for practice at 5 pm ET. Stay with us...

T-Minus an Hour and Counting...

02-22-2007  4:05 pm

The track safety crews are out doing their final inspection of the racing surface, and the jet blowers are out - and they are merely blowing the track clean rather than drying it. The skies are still very gray and overcast, but there is no rain in the immediate area and we are looking pretty good for a scheduled 5 pm ET start of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series practice.

On Time Start...Trucks on Track

02-22-2007  5:20 pm

Our apologies for the delay in updating, but the network went down here just as the first practice was rolling off. While the Internet is back and functioning, it doesn't appear as though timing and scoring computers are up in the media center or the garage area. We'll try our best to keep you informed of what's going on here the best we can, and hopefully that includes some timing updates as well.

Most teams on the track have been working on single truck runs early on, but the Roush-Fenway teammates Travis Kvapil and Carl Edwards started off working together in a tight draft for several laps. With just 34 trucks on site for a 36-truck starting grid, most teams should be working on long runs and race setups rather than qualifying setups.

Stick with us, we'll have more practice updates to follow.

Who's been out...

02-22-2007  5:26 pm

Most of the entry list has been out on the track in the early stages of practice, including Todd Bodine, Travis Kvapil, David Starr, Mike Skinner, Mark Martin, Kraig Kinser, Willie Allen, Ron Hornaday, Ken Schrader, Erik Darnell, Aaron Fike, Jack Sprague, Bill Lester, Brendan Gaughan, Ron Hornaday, Stacy Compton, Matt Crafton, and Kelly Bires. Kinser has been out logging lap afer lap, as has Allen.

02-22-2007  5:38 pm

Spotters Watching Rain Move In

02-22-2007  6:55 pm

There is rain approaching from the west, and it may shorten our final practice if it approaches within the next hour. We are five minutes away from the start of the final practice. We'll be here to offer updates throughout, hopefully it will be a complete 60-minute session.

Weather Update

02-22-2007  6:59 pm

The rain is slowly moving closer. It's likely we will have our final session shortened by rain. Fontana is located just to the west of San Bernardino.

Happy Hour Underway

02-22-2007  7:01 pm

Todd Bodine, Travis Kvapil, Wayne Edwards, and Jack Sprague just fired the engines and moved onto the track to begin final practice. We'll have updates throughout, as long as weather lets us continue.

Wayne Edwards Spins Off Two

02-22-2007  7:03 pm

Wayne Edwards spun on the second lap of the final practice to bring out the red flag. He didn't make any contact and has driven the No. 95 Ford back to the garage. The drivers stopped either on pit road or at the exit of pit road on the racetrack, and have just now fired off to resume practice.

Sprinkles Reported

02-22-2007  7:08 pm

The first sprinkles are being reported around the garage area. No word on the scanner if any spotters or drivers are feeling any rain on the roof or out on the track. We are still green.

Rain Brings Practice to a Halt

02-22-2007  7:32 pm

It has started raining here at California Speedway, which has stopped practice for the time being. No word on whether we're done for good or just temporarily, but it's not looking good to get practice back underway.

Practice Times Coming...

02-22-2007  8:55 pm

We're sorry for the inconvenience, but due to several circumstances out of everyone's control here at the track practice times have not been available until just a few moments ago. We are working on getting those posted and they should be up very soon.

Post-Practice Audio

02-22-2007  8:57 pm

We'll also have some post-practice audio for you to check out this evening as well. We met up with Johnny Benson and talked about what his team did and didn't get accomplished in the final shortened practice. We spoke to Aaron Fike about his strong performance following up a strong run at Daytona, and talked to Kraig Kinser about coming out of the box strong here at California after disappointment last week in Daytona. Willie Allen talked about putting a "California Stripe" on the rear end of his truck, and Travis Kvapil talked about how the setups have evolved even in the past year since the truck he is driving here this weekend won here with Mark Martin driving. Look to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page and click on the audio link to listen.

Good Morning from Fontana

02-23-2007  12:09 pm

Good morning from a slightly sunnier and much drier California Speedway. The rains that dampened our spirits last night has moved out and there is some sun breaking through the puffy white clouds that hanger overhead. Rain is not in the forecast today, but the track was still damp when we walked in this morning so the jet dryers are out getting the track in shape for NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Nextel Cup Series practice. NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series qualifying is slated for 4:10 pm ET, so stick with us as we update some stats and preview tonight's San Bernardino County 200.

Best Wishes

02-23-2007  12:51 pm

Members of the Roush Fenway Racing team here at the track offer their best wishes to one of their own today. Bobby Hudson, who is the spotter for Carl Edwards on the weekend and the Truck Series shop foreman for the team, suffered a heart attack back in North Carolina last night. Hudson is reportedly in stable condition, and all of the Roush Fenway team members here wish him a speedy recovery.

Engine Change for Allen

02-23-2007  1:50 pm

After finding some metal shavings in the oil during routine preparations this morning, the ThorSport team is hard at work changing engines on Willie Allen's No. 13 Chevrolet. The crew is also finishing up repairing the last of the cosmetic scrapes to the body after yesterday's brush with the turn two wall in practice. Due to the engine change, Allen will be forced, by rule, to drop to the back of the pack for the start.

Qualifying Up Next

02-23-2007  3:40 pm

We've been patrolling the garage and we have some great shots of the teams preparing to roll through tech prior to qualifying in our TruckShots! gallery. In addition, we spoke to rookies Chase Miller and Blake Bjorklund prior to the roll for the pole and that audio is available by clicking the Audio link to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page. Miller talks about his spectacular accident last week in Daytona and how he's handling bouncing back from a rough start to the season. Bjorklund also talks about bouncing back from a rough start, and talks about the difficulty coming to a new track for the first time.

Meanwhile, the trucks are being staged on the pit lane as NASCAR Nextel Cup Series practice is winding down. We are a go for Live! Bud Pole Qualifying this afternoon at 4:10 pm ET, so stick with us!

San Bernardino County 200 Race Updates 1-10

02-23-2007  8:58 pm

9. Lap 5 - Edwards lead by half a second. Fourth place Martin is 3.5 seconds behind the lead.

8. Lap 2 - Skinner continues to lead over Edwards, Hornaday, Gaughan, Sprague, Musgrave, Martin, Walker, Kinser and Crafton.

7. Green flag. Edwards jumps out but Skinner fights back as they stack up four wide behind going into turn one. Skinner pulls ahead down the backstretch but Edwards fights hard on the inside. Skinner clears off four and leads lap one.

6. The lights are out on the pace truck. Green flag next time around.

5. The first pace lap is in the books. The field is setting their pit road speed behind the pace trucks.

4. NASCAR is allowing the teams several minutes to warm the engines on pit road before rolling off.

3. Engines have been fired. Three drivers to the back on the start: Allen for an engine change, Bires and W. Edwards for adjustments in impound.

2. The National Anthem has been performed and the drivers are now buckling in. We are moments away from the command to start engines.

1. Drivers are being introduced to the audience now. It is a cool night, with most crewmen bundled in jackets, gloves, and hats. The sky is crystal clear, which is a rarity in SoCal. It's a perfect night for racing, and we should be ready to go shortly.

Some thought the San Bernardino County 200 would end with a whimper, but in true NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series form, the plot twist came right at the end. With leader Mark Martin spinning on a restart with four laps to go and Mike Skinner slipping into the lead and the eventual win coming on the heels of a three-wide run for the win at Daytona, we can only wonder what will happen at Atlanta.

Congrats to Mike Skinner on his 20th career win and to the entire Bill Davis Racing team. We're going to wrap it up from Fontana. Check out the post-race audio to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page...we have press conference audio with the top three and exclusive TruckSeries.com TrackSideLive! audio with each as well. We'll see you all from Atlanta in few weeks. Good night everybody!
