After spending most of his professional career designing wind tunnels and automotive test facilities, Ken Woodard never thought he'd ever be spending his time at the racetrack as a NASCAR team engineer. "I worked for Sverdrup Technology in Tullahoma (TN) for 15 years and I was planning on retiring there," said Woodard, now the team engineer for HT Motorsports and the No. 59 Toyota Tundra driven by Terry Cook in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. "Then in 2000, I saw an ad on Monster.com stating Dodge Motorsports was looking for an aerodynamic engineer." (Team PR Photo)

Keselowski Will Sub for Musgrave at Memphis
- Ted Musgrave will not be driving the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota Tundra this weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park; but it's not by choice. After getting into a wreck with Kelly Bires on lap 74 in Turn 2 at The Milwaukee Mile last Friday night, Musgrave took his battered Toyota and rammed alongside Bires stopped truck against the outside wall. Musgrave was black flagged, directed off the track and into the garage area. Bires was forced to register a DNF because of the damage. That black flag was just the beginning for Musgrave. As a NASCAR race spotter, there’s little that happens on the racetrack that bothers me. If it did, I shouldn’t be up there. This past weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, I got scared. Mind you, it wasn’t spotting Terry Cook in Friday’s Sam’s Town 400 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, but rather watching the Indy Racing League cars practice on the ultra-fast 1.5-mile TMS oval.

He was the 1996 Nextel Cup Raybestos' Rookie of the Year, the 1995 Busch Series champion and is also a winner in the Craftsman Truck Series ranks. It's just a shade over 600 miles from Mansfield, Ohio to Newton, Iowa. Traffic may make you bide your time a little on the way up State Route 13 and U.S. 250 to the Ohio Turnpike, but once you hit the expressway, it's smooth sailing through the mostly flat and generally green lands of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. If you're lucky enough to miss rush hour in Chicago, the journey's a comfortable use of about nine hours of time. If Wikipedia's to be believed, these two towns have more in common than one might think. Both are county seats with all the requisite courthouse trimmings.

The news today that NASCAR vice-chairman Bill France, Jr. passed away at the age of 74 was not a total shock, but was still very much unexpected. For those of us that spend time in and around the infield at Daytona International Speedway during SpeedWeeks, there was the occasional sighting of the man, who as NASCAR president from 1972 through 2003, led the charge to transform NASCAR from a regional collection of rag-tag short track racers to a national sports phenomenon. Those sightings have become more and more infrequent in recent years, and when you did happen to spot Bill Jr., as he was known to the racing world, you could tell his health was slowly slipping away. NASCAR Vice Chairman William C. France, whose leadership helped turn a family-owned company into a national phenomenon, died today at his home in Daytona Beach, Fla. at the age of 74. France served as NASCAR's president from 1972-2000, taking over from his father, NASCAR founder William H.G. "Big Bill" France. In 2000, France - known as "Bill Jr." - became NASCAR's CEO and the chairman of the newly created NASCAR Board of Directors.
