Lester Merges Science, Experience for Racing Success 02-27-2007 2:16 pm
Lester Merges Science, Experience for Racing Success What works the best setting up a truck for the race to the checkered flag - a computer or old-fashioned, seat-of-the-pants feel? Bill Lester, driver of the No. 15 Bowen Family Homes Chevrolet, one of NASCAR's few national series drivers holding an engineering degree, believes it's a combination of both. "I have been racing for a long time and rely on the old school way of communication through feel and track knowledge," said the University of California-Berkeley graduate. "But because of my Electrical Engineering and Computer Science degree, I understand the mechanics of what the truck is doing. "I understand why the tires might grip better on different parts of the race track, why to run certain lines on the track and when to ease up on the throttle." Crew chief Richie Wauters, a five-time series winner, thinks Lester's engineering background will pay dividends as the season progresses. (VPS Motorimages Photo)

Life's Good On and Off the Track for Sprague 02-22-2007 1:06 pm
Life019s Good On and Off the Track for Sprague Jack Sprague has always been known as a hard charger. It's a reputation that comes with a stout record behind it, having earned 29 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series wins, 28 poles, and three series championships. It's even earned him some nicknames, some complimentary and some not so much. The Michigan native's career was boosted by a ride offered by NASCAR powerhouse team owner Rick Hendrick in 1995, and from there Sprague soon became the dominant force in NASCAR's newest series. In 2002, following his third Truck championship, Sprague's team moved to the NASCAR Busch Series. Two wins later, the sponsor wanted to move to the Cup Series, and Sprague grudgingly went along. A frustrating year in Cup followed. In 2004, Sprague made the move back to the Truck Series and things started to change. Competitive once again, Sprague's life at the track was on an upswing.
