The cost of racing in every NASCAR series is constantly increasing. With top NASCAR Nextel Cup Series teams asking for - and in many cases receiving - upwards of $20 million from a sponsor for just one year, the price of playing poker is out of reach for many companies and individuals wishing to get exposure or to compete as an owner. For some owners, even ones that can demand and receive the largest of the sponsorships, they find that there is a need for more funding to stay competitive. Richard Childress Racing, winner of six NNCS championships with the late Dale Earnhardt and last year's NASCAR Busch Series championship with Kevin Harvick, recently sold a significant portion of the team to a group of investors. Roush Racing, with 13 teams spread throughout the NASCAR scene, is in talks with Fenway Sports Group's John Henry. Fenway Sports is the owner of, among other entities, the Boston Red Sox. Last season race fans witnessed one of the craziest championship battles ever in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. In a few days we will begin the lucky 13th season for the series. Our broadcast team welcomes Adam Alexander to the SPEED television crew. As I began packing my bags for Daytona, a few questions came to mind about the upcoming 25-race season. While we will have to wait until almost Thanksgiving to find out the answers, here are a few things I would like to know…. 1. Will the Toyota brand dominate AGAIN in 2007? The development of their 2007 Camry and new Nextel Cup teams has definitely pulled resources away from the Truck teams. The driver line-up for Toyota is still hard to beat. Can the Detroit three step up to the battle? (David M. Vaughn Photo)

What do you get when you mix a former series champion with the winningest owner in series history? "A team that's capable of winning a bunch of races and running for the championship," according to 2003 series champion Travis Kvapil (No. 6 Roush Racing Ford). Kvapil returns to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2007 after a two-year stint in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. Kvapil joins Roush Racing, his third different team - and manufacturer - driving the No. 6 truck that Mark Martin steered to six victories last season, a series high. Kvapil knows the expectations are high. "There aren't a lot of changes on the team apart from me as a driver, so the pressure is on to go out and live up to the mark that Mark set last year," he said. "Everybody at Roush and Ford is gunning for a championship, so it's a big goal." (David M. Vaughn Photo)

After two back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2003, Xpress Motorsports has proven to be one of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series most powerful teams. With team owner Dave Fuge calling the shots, Xpress has scored wins with drivers Randy Tolsma, Mike Bliss, Ron Hornaday, Travis Kvapil, and Jack Sprague. However, even a strong record and recent trips to victory lane have not assured Fuge's team survival in 2007. After running on a shoestring budget with Bliss again at the wheel in 2006, the new season kicks off with Fuge again wondering what his future holds. Some part-time sponsorship from the team's former owner Steve Coulter and his IWX Motor Freight company and Strutmasters.com kept the team above water, and allowed Bliss to fight for a top ten position in the final standings as well as a dominant victory last fall at Atlanta Motor Speedway. However, when the first test sessions of 2007 kicked off at Daytona last weekend, Fuge was seen walking the garage trying to drum up a deal instead of working on his familiar No. 16 Chevrolets. Bill Lester spent the three-day test session at the Daytona International Speedway not only preparing for the season-opening NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on February 16, but also learning a new race team in Billy Ballew Motorsports. Lester and crew chief, Richie Wauters, developed almost an immediate chemistry at the test and both envision a successful 2007 season. "I have an incredible opportunity with Billy Ballew Motorsports this season," said Bill Lester. "The teams I have driven for in the past were multi-truck teams so the focus was a bit different. This No. 15 team with Richie Wauters at the helm has the reputation for building trucks capable of being upfront every week. I plan on doing my part to try to maintain that. The chemistry with Richie is already there; it's as if we've worked together for years." (David M. Vaughn Photo)

Crafting fond remembrances about friends is getting to be an all too frequent occurrence around here and today's news is easily the most difficult this writer has had to report in a long time - the passing of Benny Parsons earlier today. Benny Parsons, the 1973 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion and winner of the 1975 Daytona 500, passed away Monday at the age of 65. Parsons spent the last year fighting lung cancer, but still carried out his duties as a television analyst for NBC Sports for the network’s coverage of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and Busch Series events. Parsons, who retired from active competition in 1988, began his career in television in the mid 1980s on a part-time basis with ESPN and joined the network’s NASCAR coverage full-time after he retired as a driver. Born in North Carolina, Parsons grew up with his grandparents before relocating to join his parents and younger brother Phil in the Detroit area. He took a part-time job as a taxi driver in Detroit, and soon found his interest in race cars had grown to the point where he was ready to jump behind the wheel. (Sherryl Creekmore/NASCAR Photo)

In 2006, no NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team was more dominant at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway than Roush Racing. Mark Martin drove to victory in both races, starting from the pole on each occasion. Additionally, Erik Darnell was sixth at Daytona in his debut race in the series, and David Ragan was seventh at Talladega after starting alongside Martin on the front row. After the first shakedown runs of the 2007 Preseason Thunder test sessions at Daytona, it seems as if the rest of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is facing the prospect of again following the No. 6 Roush Racing Ford when we return to officially kick off the season during SpeedWeeks. Martin's replacement, 2003 series titlist Travis Kvapil, picked up right where his predecessor left off over three-day test, leading each session. (VPS Motorimages Photo)

Call it what you may - old-home week or just former comrades-in-arms reuniting - but there's little doubt the opportunity to meld talent with familiarity is creating unlimited potential. Driver Ron Hornaday Jr. (No. 33 AES HR Solutions Chevrolet), crew chief Rick Ren and Team Manager Rick Carelli may have come to KHI from different directions but each has been linked to the other since the beginning of the series in 1995. Two of the trio - Hornaday and Carelli - also have a relationship with Kevin Harvick that reaches into the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series star's teen-age years. "Right now at KHI the people we have in place, the drivers we have and the crew chiefs we have is pretty impressive," said Carelli, whose first of four victories was shared with Ren at Bristol Motor Speedway in 1995. Bodine is now ready to turn his attention to historic Daytona International Speedway and the season-opening Chevy Silverado HD 250 on Friday night, Feb. 16 as he chases his first Daytona victory and back-to-back Craftsman Truck Series championships. "You work so many years to get to this point to be the champion," Bodine said at the lunch break on Friday in the DIS Media Center. "Every year you start off at Daytona. You go through the season working your tail off and you get to the end and you didn't quite get there. Well, this year we got there and when we got there -- it's like now what do you do. The only thing I know how to do is go back and go to work and try to do it again. We're definitely looking forward to trying to get it done again." (David M. Vaughn Photo)

The 2007 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will open, as it has since 2000, with a 250-mile clash on the highbanks of Daytona International Speedway. And just like it has every year since, the unofficial start of the season will kick off when the engines roar to life as testing begins for the season opener this weekend at the World Center of Speed. Now named Jackson Hewitt Preseason Thunder at Daytona, speedway officials have turned what was once a drab and boring affair for all into something of an event. Fan Fests in the Nextel Fan Zone in the infield give the public a chance to meet their favorite drivers up close, and with the relaxed atmosphere that permeates the speedway during January testing it gives everyone a chance to feel the magic that is Daytona without being crowded by 200,000 of your best friends. There are two phases to the test sessions. The first phase is the single truck runs; there are three to five trucks out on the track at once, each looking for the most speed possible in qualifying trim. (David M. Vaughn Photo)

Racers accept death on the speedway. It's mortality off the racetrack they have trouble dealing with. Such is the case today as the motorsports community struggles with the passing of Bobby Hamilton, Sr. Hamilton, 49, died Sunday around 3 p.m. at his home in Nashville, TN losing a year-long battle with cancer. An accomplished driver who got his start at the Nashville (TN) Fairgrounds Speedway, Hamilton broke onto the NASCAR Winston Cup scene when he drove one of the camera cars for the movie 'Days of Thunder.' Piloting the No. 51 Exxon Chevy fielded by Rick Hendrick for Paramount Pictures, Hamilton qualified fifth for the for the 1989 Autowerks 500 at Phoenix (AZ) International Raceway. His car, several hundred pounds heavier than those of his competitors because of the additional camera equipment, provided many of the shots that eventually were edited into the runaway success movie that introduced the sport to millions of people. NASCAR drivers Boris Said, Randy LaJoie and Mike Stefanik showed that "racers are racers" by placing 1-2-3 in the 2nd annual Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge presented by Whelen at the Lake Placid (N.Y.) Olympic bobsled course on Saturday. Drivers from a variety of NASCAR divisions and the NHRA tested their skills at the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, as the climax of a weekend devoted to support of the U.S. Olympic bobsled program. Despite making his second and final run of both races in a cold, windblown rain, Stefanik, the reigning NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion scored a pair of third-place finishes during the event. He was beaten only by NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Boris Said, an international sports car racing star with bobsled experience, who won both races, by former NASCAR Busch Series champion Randy LaJoie in the opening race, and by NHRA top fuel drag racer Morgan Lucas in the nightcap.

The close of the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season in November answered many questions. Todd Bodine would indeed hold off Johnny Benson for the series championship, Mark Martin would close the season and end his tenure with Roush Racing with one final victory - coming in a Truck no less - at Homestead, and Toyota's dominance would reign supreme as the manufacturer claimed the top six positions in the final NCTS driver's standings. However, many questions were left unanswered as well. Veteran drivers Dennis Setzer, Terry Cook, and David Starr all entered the off season looking for their next opportunity. Team owners Wayne Spears, Jim Harris, and Duke Thorson were among many that had rides available or in question. The Spears ride was originally planned for Aric Almirola, but after careful consideration, the Joe Gibbs Racing team decided to move their lead development driver into a partial NASCAR Busch Series program, leaving one of the series most venerable and competitive rides open. A winning combination according to Jim Harris, owner of the HT Motorsports No. 59 Toyota Tundra. Cook also holds the record for the most consecutive starts in the NCTS beating out previous record holder Rick Crawford (210) with 222 starts. At the close of the 2006 season, Terry Cook secured one win at Kansas Speedway and an eighth place standing in the overall driver point standings. He's looking forward to continuing his successful career at HT Motorsports. (Christina Ramzel Photo)
