Few drivers in last Friday night's Quaker Steak and Lube 200 could have bounced a race truck off the wall at nearly 200 mph and still post a Top-Five finish. But few drivers in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race have the kind of racing pedigree as Mark Martin. Despite hitting the wall early in the race, Martin still finished fourth in the No. 21 Bubba Burger Ford F-150. (VPS Motorimages Photo)

Ron Hornaday has never been a big fan of Lowe's Motor Speedway. Prior to tonight, he'd never won at the track just outside of Charlotte, N.C., and he's always found the track's well-worn surface to be a challenge. All that changed after a smokey burnout into Victory Lane as Hornaday claimed his 30th career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win in the Quaker Steak and Lube 200. Hornaday, in his newly-sponsored No. 33 Camping Word Chevrolet out of the Kevin Harvick, Inc. shop, was the dominant driver on the night leading three times for a total of 98 laps on his way to his first win of the 2007 season. While Hornaday was the man up front all night long, he was forced to hold off a resurgent A.J. Allmendinger on a two-lap dash to the checkered following a crash involving the winner of the last series event at Kansas Erik Darnell. Allmendinger pressed the two-time series champion over the final three miles, but the Palmdale, California native crossed the line 0.244 seconds ahead of the former Champ Car World Series standout. Credit Allmendinger for keeping Hornaday honest and that says a lot for a driver whose four Champ Car victories can't really count as experience in this sort of racing. Allmendinger finished fifth in his third series start at Talladega Superspeedway last October and now owns the best finish by a driver with fewer than 10 starts since Clint Bowyer won last fall at Texas Motor Speedway. Ron Hornaday Jr. held off AJ Allmendinger in a green-white-checkered finish to win the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 Craftsman Truck Series race Friday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The two-lap shootout resulted from a caution on lap 132 that pushed the race two laps beyond its posted distance of 134 laps. Strong on restarts throughout the race, Hornaday pulled away slightly on Lap 135 and crossed the finish line .244 seconds ahead of Allmendinger. Todd Bodine ran third, followed by Mark Martin and Ted Musgrave. Mike Bliss, Matt Crafton, Mike Skinner, T.J. Bell and Rick Crawford claimed positions six through 10. Johnny Benson was running second when he cut down a right-front tire and smacked the outside wall on Lap 123. It is quickly becoming routine in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series qualifying: Mike Skinner takes the top spot and everyone else is running for second. For the fourth consecutive race, Skinner's No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota will start from the top spot as he took his 36th career Bud Pole in qualifying for tonight's Quaker Steak and Lube 200. In addition to his fourth consecutive pole of the season, it is also Skinner's third consecutive pole start at Lowe's Motor Speedway. With the track falling into shade and the temperature allowing quicker times as the session wore on, Skinner led a host of drivers making a run at the top spot late in the going. Skinner turned a lap at 29.922 seconds/180.469 miles per hour to give him his fifth front row start in six races so far in 2007. Skinner faced pressure late in qualifying by Travis Kvapil. Driving the No. 6 K&N Filters Ford, Kvapil turned a lap at 29.968 seconds/180.192 miles per hour, just 0.046 seconds off Skinner's pole pace. (David M. Vaughn Photo)

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to the Lowe's Motor Speedway just outside of Charlotte, N.C. for this Friday's Quaker Steak and Lube 200. For most teams it is a home game as the majority of the teams are located within a short drive of the 1.5-mile quad-oval. This year's race will be the second Truck Series contest on the still-new pavement, and the teams just wrapped up an extensive two-day test to continue familiarizing themselves with the new surface. Last year produced impressive speeds but some crumpled sheet metal as the teams struggled to get used to the new pavement, and by all appearances the number of rumpled fenders should go down now that the asphalt has aged another year.
