Heading to Daytona for the start of the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) season, Kraig Kinser and the No. 47 Ginn Resorts Silverado were looking to score a top-10 finish. Instead, the Morgan-Dollar Motorsports (MDM) team went home with a 30th place finish, and their hopes of achieving Daytona magic would have to wait until 2008.

The first 2-truck effort at Daytona for Key Motorsports was shortened by accidents Friday night, derailing what were solid runs for both veteran NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Mike Bliss and rookie Larry Foyt. "It is really a shame that we had those problems because this race truck was definitely capable of winning this race," Bliss said after the race. (VPS Motorimages Photo)

The first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event of the 2007 season at Daytona International Speedway Friday night was playing out to be a race to remember for Dodge Driver Chase Miller and the No. 4 Open Joist Racing Team. Miller, who had never seen DIS before testing in January, spent most of the night in the lead pack running in the top 10 for the first 54 laps after starting the event in the 15th position.

After a strong test at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in mid-January, the No. 5 Toyota Tundra team knew it would be a contender for the biggest race of the 2007 season. The team quickly proved it had one of the strongest trucks in the garage. The team was third quickest in the first practice session of the weekend and continued its blistering pace throughout the remaining practice sessions. (David M. Vaughn Photo)

Friday night's Chevy Silverado HD 250 season opener was a wild ride full of lead changes and three wide racing. Ron Hornaday started in the 16th position, near his Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) teammate Cale Gale. Hornaday was quickly moving forward when on lap three Mike Wallace hit the wall heading into Turn 1, bringing out the first caution of the race. (David M. Vaughn Photo)

Todd Bodine gave his sponsor, Lumber Liquidators, an exciting ride for their first trip to Daytona International Speedway. Bodine kept the No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Tundra in the top-three for much of the 100-lap race, including grabbing the lead on two occasions, and making a few powerful moves through the field to show off the strength of his Tundra. Making "Bold Moves" at Daytona has become a way of life for Rick Crawford and his Circle Bar team. From the drop of the green flag Crawford was making "Bold Moves". In the first lap he moved from 13th to 6th. "My hat's off to a great truck from the Circle Bar Racing guys. Our Power Stroke Diesel Ford by International ran up front all night long."

The Momentum is Flowing Again with Green Light Racing
- When the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series headed to Daytona International Speedway, Chad McCumbee was up for his first lesson in Trucks at the high-banked track. He had been around several times in an ARCA car, but this was to be his test at Daytona in a NASCAR Craftsman Truck.

|
|
Ken Schrader and his No. 18 Fastenal Dodge Racing Team had high hopes heading into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season opener, the Chevy Silverado 250 at Daytona International Speedway. The night started out in the right direction as Schrader began to work his way to the front from his 21st starting position.

As they loaded their Ford F-150s into the hauler for the Chevy Silverado HD 250, David Starr, Dennis Connor and their MaxxForce International Diesel Power team had done the impossible. In less than 5 weeks they formed a new race team, tested twice and prepared 2 Fords for the high banks of Daytona.
|
|
|
Cale Gale started his 2007 NASCAR Truck Series season for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) with a solid 14th place finish in the Silverado HD 250 at Daytona International Speedway in Florida. This was not only Gale’s first Truck Series race, but it was also his first time racing at the 2.5-mile Daytona (Fla.) superspeedway.

Rookie Tyler Walker and the No. 36 360 OTC Toyota Tundra team headed to Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway with new colors and high hopes. The rookie quickly proved in practice that he was going to be a force to be reckoned with from the beginning. The team made a few changes to its Toyota Tundra during practice, and Walker was soon able to run on the high and low sides of the track.

Prior to 2006, Jack Sprague never had much luck at the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. Even dating back to his first start here, in the NASCAR Busch Series in the early 1990s, Sprague was a quick study of the draft and ran competitively. He qualified on the front row his first time here, but was swept up in someone else's trouble in the middle stages of the race. That set the scene for the remainder of his career at Daytona, until last year. In last season's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season opener, Sprague ran well but almost saw it turn awry late in the going; he got loose in turns three and four and made a tremendous save. He was able to keep it straight and collected a top five finish. Apparently, after years of bad luck, that save was the impetus to get things on the right track. Even an off-track excursion down the backstretch in practice couldn't derail Sprague's juggernaut. He earned the pole in qualifying, and stayed in the mix all night long putting himself in position for another top five finish. (David M. Vaughn Photo)

Lightning indeed strikes twice and both times Travis Kvapil has been its victim. Three-abreast finishes are a rarity in any kind of racing but with the dramatic conclusion to Friday night's Chevy Silverado HD 250, it's happened twice in the past five NASCAR Craftsman Truck races at Daytona International Speedway. Kvapil? Well, he's lost the race in two different ways. In 2003, he fell a couple of feet shy of Rick Crawford's front bumper as the pair overhauled Robert Pressley at the checkered flag. Friday's defeat, however, was a bitter one as Kvapil assumed Pressley's role of sitting duck off the fourth turn of the Daytona's final 2-1/2 miles. Benson, running third in his Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota, bump-drafted Sprague's Con-way Freight Toyota past Kvapil's K&N Engineering Ford and - to add insult to injury - slashed to the inside lane to drop the 2003 champion into a third-place finish. |
It's way too early to be talking points and championship but Friday's finish in which four of the first five finishers are series champions suggests experience likely will be a significant factor as the 2007 seasons unfolds. In fact, six of the seven former titleholders - all fulltime runners this season - occupied the final top 10 positions and led a combined 82 of the race's 100 laps. (VPS Motorimages Photo)

Carl Edwards had been as excited as he’s ever been to race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, but this time seemed different. He knew he had a truck that could win the race, and he couldn’t wait to kick off his Daytona Speedweeks with a win. However, it wasn’t to be for Edwards, as transmission troubles ended his chance for contention just 13 laps into the event.

Travis Kvapil came to Daytona knowing he had a target on his back. During preseason testing, the No. 6 Ford was the fastest in virtually every practice session. Everyone knew that Kvapil had the truck to beat. Kvapil had the No. 6 K&N Filters Ford F-150 at the front of the field for most of the night, but a last lap pass by Jack Sprague and Johnny Benson left Kvapil with a third-place finish. Erik Darnell had been looking forward to getting back to Daytona International Speedway since the checkered flag dropped at Homestead last November. The Northern Tool + Equipment team looked to be in position to back up their sixth-place finish that they scored at Daytona last year, but a late-race shuffle left them back in traffic at the checkered flag, bringing home a 12th-place finish.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series 2007 season opening race Friday night proved to be a stellar start for Bill Lester and the No. 15 Billy Ballew Motorsports team during the running of the Silverado HD 250 at the Daytona. Talk about a tough act to follow. Friday night's Chevy Silverado HD 250, the season opening race for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, came down to a three-wide, jaw-dropping, finish at the checkered flag. Jack Sprague nipped Johnny Benson and Travis Kvapil at the start/finish line for his 28th career victory and his first win at Daytona International Speedway. With half a lap left Travis Kvapil looked as if he'd pull off an impressive win, which would have been his first after runner-up finishes in 2003 and 2004. But Sprague, who started from the Budweiser Pole, had other plans. And so did Benson. Both rushed past Kvapil's K&N Engineering Ford - which led a race-high 49 laps - for the eighth closest finish in Craftsman Truck Series history. The lead changes were plentiful - 21 altogether - and when they came, they came in bunches. (VPS Motorimages Photo)

This is the second consecutive race at Daytona where at Raybestos Rookie has scored a top-10 finish. “That was the most fun I’ve ever had in those five laps right there. That was a blast. I thought we were done, slowing down there. I don’t know how they hit you."

"I've been here before and I knew that was going to happen. I got down the backstretch and looked in my mirror and said, 'I'm out too far on these guys.' I was dragging the brake down the backstretch and trying to split the air between those two guys, and in doing that I lost a lot of my own momentum. -

The 2007 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season kicks off tonight with the Chevy Silverado HD 250 at Daytona International Speedway.
Jack Sprague, No. 60 Con-way Freight Toyota:
Sprague earned his first-ever pole at Daytona in qualifying last night. Sprague has had rough luck here in the past, but seemed to get the monkey off his back with a top-five run last year. He was strong at Talladega last year before an engine problem sidelined him in the middle stages of the race. A trouble-free run could equate to a first-ever Daytona victory.
Carl Edwards, No. 50 Ortho Ford:
Edwards has two previous starts in a Truck at Daytona and has been spectacular in both, a hard homestretch crash in 2003 while leading was followed by an eventful win in 2004. He has his two Roush Fenway Racing teammates with him near the front, but the question will be can they run with the nine Toyotas that dominate the front third of the starting field.

Prior to 2007, Jack Sprague had never qualified among the top-five for a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Daytona. In fact, Sprague never had much luck at all at Daytona, a fifth-place finish in last year's season opener not withstanding. But that luck has started to turn last season, as a late race nudge that could have resulted in a major crash resulted in nothing more than a couple of lost positions. And it continues to move towards the positive as Sprague claimed the pole for the Chevy Silverado HD 250 at Daytona International Speedway as Toyota again flexed their muscle. All told, Toyota claimed seven of the top ten starting positions and nine of the top 12. Sprague, in the Wyler Racing No. 60 Con-way Freight Toyota, turned a fast lap of 50.137 seconds around the 2.5-mile high-banked tri-oval, which averaged 179.508 miles per hour. "This is really cool. I started outside the front row for the first Busch race I ran here in the 90s, but I've never qualified good here in the truck," Sprague said. (David M. Vaughn Photo)
