11-09-2006  4:01 pm

Todd Bodine, Mike Skinner, Damon Lusk, Bobby East, Jack Sprague, Erin Crocker and Dennis Setzer have led the charge onto the speedway to open the first practice for tomorrow's Casino Arizona 150. We'll have timing updates throughout and will update any track action as it happens. Stick with us!

They Said It Prac 1 No 1

11-09-2006  4:03 pm

Todd Bodine, No. 30 Toyota: "It gets in the corner good. I don't know if it is air pressure or not, but it wanders quite a bit when you get off the throttle."

Erin Crocker, No. 98 Dodge: "It starts a little free. When I get in the throttle it gets tight."

Jack Sprague, No. 60 Toyota: "I can't drive in too deep; it's tight. Over the bumps it gets tighter."

Sprague's Good Luck Monkey Missing

11-09-2006  4:07 pm

After finally getting the monkey off his back and winning at Martinsville, someone presented Jack Sprague with a stuffed monkey for good luck. He took that monkey to Texas last week and had a solid run, and was going to carry it with him as well here in Phoenix. That was until someone monkeynapped his new little friend. "We are desperately searching for our monkey," Sprague said before climbing into his No. 60 Toyota. " We're worried about that little guy, hopefully he hasn't fallen into the wrong hands."

They Said It Prac 1 No 2

11-09-2006  4:09 pm

Mark Martin, No. 6 Ford: "It doesn't want to accept it when I start to give it gas."

Chad Chaffin, No. 50 Toyota: "I get in the throttle pretty good. Off two it wants to snap loose. Off four it's more a perpetual loose off the turn."

Brendan Gaughan, No. 77 Dodge: "It feels like something in the front isn't really finishing the corner. When your putting power down it gives you a little bit of a one-hitter and you drive off. If it wasn't tight I bet it wouldn't do that."

Red Out; Kingsland Spins Off T-4

11-09-2006  4:25 pm

Casey Kingsland brought out the red flag for the first time this afternoon with a quick spin off turn four. Kingsland slid down the frontstretch but kept his truck off both the inside and the outside walls. He drove the truck away and after a quick track inspection we should be back to green flag conditions.

UPDATE: Kingsland has brought the truck back to the pits with a flat right front tire. No word yet on whether the tire cause the incident or was a result of the incident. Also, no word on any resultant damage from driving around the speedway with a flat tire, either to the chassis or the body.

Audio Posted

11-09-2006  4:57 pm

We tracked down some major players in the Truck Series world prior to the start of practice this afternoon to get their thoughts on a variety of subjects. First, we sat down for an extensive and exclusive interview with Erin Crocker and Ray Evernham. Erin discusses her rookie year to this point and expresses her optimism for the final two races of the year. Evernham, named one of NASCAR's top crew chiefs ever in a recent poll, talks about Crocker's progress as a rookie and the Truck Series team's overal status within the Evernham Motorsports organization. We also talked to "Mile Track Jack", Jack Sprague and asked about his qualifying prowess here, and Ted Musgrave talked about what he does to get around here so quickly. John Mickel talks about Phoenix versus some of the tracks he's used to in the UK, and David Starr talks about winning here in the past and looking forward to 2007. Look to the Sights and Sounds Box to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page and click on each driver's name to listen.

Dodson and Ragan Have Near Misses

11-09-2006  5:37 pm

Both Cameron Dodson and David Ragan nearly felt the bite of the PIR turn two wall moments ago in rookie practice. Dodson picked up a push rolling through turn one and fought it, and the No. 63 Ford nearly snapped loose coming off turn two, just inches from the wall. Moments later, Ragan motored through and picked up the same push. Ragan also slid up towards the wall, throwing up a rooster tail of dust as he narrowly avoided the wall. Both drivers continued on without further incident.

Final Practice Up After SWT Qualifying

11-09-2006  6:53 pm

The final few cars are still to take their qualifying runs to set the field for tonight's Southwest Tour race, and as soon as the qualifying session is completed we will move right into the final practice for the Casino Arizona 150. Stick with us for all the action.

More Double Duty

11-09-2006  7:11 pm

In addition to Matt Crafton pulling the NCTS and SWT doubleheader, Richie Wauters has also been a busy guy here this afternoon. Wauters is the crew chief on Billy Ballew's No. 15 Chevy and he is also one of the most successful tour-style late model owners in the country. Wauters is here with a two-car entry this weekend, the No. 5 Victor Ford Ford Taurus for J.R. Norris and the No. 52 Victor Ford Ford Taurus for Ryan Lawler. So far, Norris sits fifth on the grid and Lawler is 14th.

NCTS Final Practice Up Next

11-09-2006  7:23 pm

Southwest Tour qualifying has concluded and the final practice for the NCTS Casino Arizona 150 is up next. NASCAR and track officials are making a quick track inspection, and allowing the last of the spotters to dash across the track, and at the bottom of the hour the lights will flash green and we'll be up and running for 60 minutes of practice. Stick with us for timing updates and of course we'll also update all of the on track action as well.

How Close are the Trucks to the Ground?

11-09-2006  7:47 pm

With the setups everyone uses now leaving very little room between the bottom of the nose and the track, it should come as no surprise that there are some sparks here as the sun goes down. But how bad are the sparks? One crew chief told his driver "it looks like a fireworks show down here going into one."

NCTS PIR Races Summary

11-10-2006  11:36 am

There have been 15 previous NCTS races held here at PIR. The average start of the winner is 4.53. The deepest the winner started prior to winning was 16th in the very first NCTS race ever, when Mike Skinner started 16th. The pole starter has won four times, the fall race of 1996, the spring race of 1997, the fall race of 1998, and the 2000 race.

There are an average of 16 lead lap finishers. The most was in 2000 when 20 drivers stayed on the lead lap. The fewest was in the spring of 1996 when just 9 drivers stayed on the lead lap.

We have seen an average of 5.47 lead changes per event here at PIR. The most was 12 in the spring of 1998 and the fewest was 2 in spring of 1997.

The lead is changed by an average of 3.67 different drivers per race at PIR. The most was 7 in the spring of 1998 and the fewest was 2 in the spring and fall races in 1996 and the spring race in 1997.

The caution comes out an average of 6.07 times per race. The most was in the spring of 1996 when the yellow lights came on 9 times. The fewest was in 2002 and 2003 when the yellow came out just 3 times.

The average number of caution laps is 27.3. The most was 45 in the spring of 1996. The fewest was 14 in 2002.

The cumulative average speed is 97.445 miles per hour. The fastest race was 2002 with an average speed of 108.014 mph. The slowest race was the spring race in 1996 at 84.780 mph.

PIR Race Lengths

11-10-2006  11:49 am

PIR has hosted 15 NCTS races in the past and the track has seen four different race lengths. The first race here was the first race ever in the Truck Series, the Copper Classic, and it was a true sprint race at just 80 laps. The fall race in 1995 was 124 miles long. In 1996, the races were extended to 300 kilometers or 186 laps/miles. In 1997, the spring race was shortened to 150 miles, and that is where the distance has remained to this day. The track played host to a second race through 1998 and that race remained at 186 laps.

Trucks Moving to Qualifying Grid

11-10-2006  11:54 am

The Truck Series teams are finishing up their trip through the inspection line and moving their trucks to the qualifying grid on pit road. We are just about 20 minutes away from the start of Live! Bud Pole Qualifying. It's still early in the day here at the sun has not yet reached it's peak in the sky so guys early in the draw may have a distinct advantage over the guys that go out later, so it will be an interesting session to say the least. Eleven of the 15 races here have been won from a top-five starting position, so the race is on to grab an up-front starting position. We'll have each run by each truck, so stay with us!

PIR Bud Pole Fast Facts

11-10-2006  1:51 pm

Johnny Benson picked up his first pole of 2006; his only previous pole was in 1996 at North Wilkesboro...Benson is the year's 12th different pole winner...Benson started on the front row at New Hampshire, a race he won...Benson's teammate Mike Skinner will start on the front row for the eighth time in 2006; the other seven front row starts were from the No. 1 spot...Benson broke Brandon Whitt's one-year-old track record in qualifying; the old mark was 27.439 seconds/131.200 miles per hour...Benson was the only driver in the 35-truck field to break the previous record...Benson's average start in 2006 is 11.6 and he has a 9.96 finishing average; he has qualified in the top five in three of his four 2006 victories...Benson's best previous Phoenix finish was in 1996 when he finished second.

The Pole that Almost Never Was

11-10-2006  1:57 pm

Johnny Benson's other pole in NCTS competition came at North Wilkesboro in 1996. Midway through the session, after Benson turned his fast lap, rain started to fall bringing a halt to the session. NASCAR decided to carry on with the session the following morning. Had qualifying been washed out and not continued the next morning, the field would have been lined up by owner points meaning Benson would have been off the pole. Not only that, according to the owner points and the system to set the field by the NASCAR rule book, Benson would not have made the starting field. Benson finished seventh that afternoon in a race won by Mark Martin.

Reutimann's Team Working Under Hood

11-10-2006  2:08 pm

David Reutimann's crew is hard at work under the hood of the No. 17 Toyota, apparently changing an engine. The team was hard at work, so we will get a confirmation of what happened on the second qualifying lap to cause the incident once they complete their duties. One thing is certain, Reutimann will drop to the back of the field on the start due to unapproved adjustments during the impound period.

Handicapping the Field

11-10-2006  3:28 pm

Let’s look at the 35-truck starting field for the Casino Arizona 150 at Phoenix International Raceway:

Johnny Benson – Benson won at the one-mile ovals at Milwaukee and New Hampshire earlier this season, and has started in the top five in three of his four victories in 2006. Benson has three straight top five finishes here, dating back to a second place finish in 1996, a fifth in 2004 and a third in 2005. Qualifying up front in Phoenix could be a harbinger of things to come.

Mike Skinner – Skinner won the first ever NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race here in 1995. Throw out a 17th-place run in 2004, Skinner has finished among the top-ten in every race he’s run here, and been in the top five in all but one of those. He has an average finish of 5.6, and should be a strong contender this evening.

Todd Bodine – The defending race winner has his best start since May, and it comes in a race that if all goes his way could see him clinch the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship. But all has not been smooth at Phoenix for Bodine; he finished 29th in 2004 with suspension problems.

Mike Bliss – A pole in 1997 and a win here in 1998 show Bliss can get around this track as well as anyone. The Xpress Motorsports team has been strong all season but has had problems keeping Lady Luck on its side. If the bad luck stays out of the equation, Bliss could be a factor this evening.

Matt Crafton – Crafton picked up a win in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division at PIR in January, and has always considered Phoenix to be one of his home tracks.  Crafton has always been a strong performer on the flat tracks, and this could be the race that sees him pick up his first career Truck Series win.  A strong performance on pit road is essential.

Bobby Hamilton, Jr. – The highest qualified Dodge driver, Hamilton has flexed his muscles on tracks that take aerodynamics out of the equation.  The BHR team has been of late, even racing strong at places like Atlanta and Texas.  A win here would ease the frustrations of one of the most difficult years personally and professionally for everyone at BHR, and with the emphasis on horsepower and handling it is a possibility.

Marcos Ambrose – Another venue new to the Aussie star, Ambrose has shown he can adapt to new tracks as well as anyone. He finished 23rd earlier in the year at Loudon, the track most commonly compared to Phoenix.

Kraig Kinser – Kinser’s last appearance in a Truck was at Las Vegas where he finished ninth.  He was strong all day in practice on Thursday and his team won at Texas last week with Clint Bowyer.

Mark Martin – Martin finished last in his last Truck Series start, but he’s never gone more than three races between wins in his Truck Series career.  His last win came at Talladega, and with two starts since then, Martin is primed for a win.

Terry Cook – Cook is a master of the flat mile tracks, with wins at Gateway and Loudon and a second-place at the now-defunct Nazareth mile. Crew chief Dennis Connor led Jack Sprague to three consecutive wins here in 1996 and 1997.

Rick Crawford – Crawford raced here for years in Tour-style late models before ever racing here in a Truck. Two third-place finishes are his best, but he averages a 9.3 finish. Crawford is always a factor and has a win at Loudon in 2005 under his belt.

Erik Darnell – Darnell has late model experience here too. He racked up a top ten at Loudon, but was a disappointing 27th in the other mile-track race at Milwaukee. Darnell has completed 95.5% of the laps in 2006.

Erin Crocker – Crocker was taken out early last year, but coming back to a track she’s had previous experience has given her added confidence. Crocker is a good qualifier, and her 13th-place start is her best since she started 12th at Las Vegas.

Bobby East – East narrowly missed a victory here in a USAC Midget car in 2005.  He made his series debut here last year but was taken out in a late race crash. East has qualified well all season long and has been close to a top-10 on several occasions.

Aric Almirola – The Spears team won here in 2004 with David Starr, and has had success here in the past with its West and Southwest Series efforts. Almirola is making his first start here.

Kyle Busch – Busch won the Cup race here last fall, and finished third here in the Truck race.  He’s deeper in the field than usual, but he should be a contender with 20 laps to go.

Chad Chaffin – Chaffin has three previous starts here with a best finish of 18th in 2003. His other two finishes were 30th and 35th. His 17th place qualifying effort is a career best at PIR.

David Reutimann – Reutimann’s chances took a major hit with an engine failure and spin in qualifying. He finished 7th here last fall, but was 21st here in 2004. He surely is hoping he’s had his bout with bad luck for the weekend already.

Brendan Gaughan – Gaughan has never finished higher than 12th in five previous starts, but he’s only missed 2 laps out of the 761 possible laps he could have completed at PIR.

David Ragan – Ragan is making his first start here at PIR. He is aggressive, and aggression pays of here. He could race into the top-ten here this evening.

Jack Sprague – Sprague earned his nickname “Mile Track Jack” with three consecutive wins here. Until today, Sprague had never started below 15th on the grid here, and that was the inaugural race here in 1995. Sprague has nine top-five starts here, and an equal number of top-five finishes here. His average finish here is 4.3.

Ron Hornaday – A two-time Truck winner at PIR, Hornaday averages a fifth-place finish here.  The KHI team won it’s first two races here with team owner Kevin Harvick at the wheel in 2002 and 2003. The only non top-ten finish Hornaday has here is a 13th-place finish here in 2004.

Kerry Earnhardt – His first ever Truck Series start at PIR was preceded by two Busch Series races here. He picked up a tenth place finish in the 2002 NBS race here.

David Starr – The 2004 winner here, Starr only has one other top ten finish at PIR. He’s coming from deep in the field for the second year in a row. He qualified 24th here last fall.

Shane Huffman – Huffman is doing double duty this weekend, also driving in the Busch Series for JR Motorsports.  The Key Motorsports team finished a strong 15th at Loudon in September with Ryan Moore at the wheel.

Chase Miller – Miller is a strong qualifier, but has had rotten luck in the races he’s been in since a tenth-place finish at Martinsville.

Dennis Setzer – An early draw is usually good, but Setzer was the first man out this morning and track conditions were not optimal. Setzer will have a long way to go to pick up his fourth career top five finish at PIR tonight.

Ted Musgrave – Like the other driver sharing the 14th row on the grid, Musgrave had an early draw and will start deep in the field. Musgrave has six top ten finishes in seven starts here, and has finished second twice. Look for Musgrave to make a charge towards the front early.

Damon Lusk – Another first timer at Phoenix, Lusk looks for another top-20 run.

Chad McCumbee – Even when he qualifies poorly, McCumbee usually comes alive during the race. Don’t expect him to stay outside the top-20 all night long.

Robert Richardson – One of the most improved drivers since the start of the season, Richardson has started to avoid trouble, log laps, and learn. He should be much better at the end of tonight’s race than he is when the green flag drops, and could race his way into contention for a top-20.

Bill Lester – An uncharacteristically poor qualifying effort for Lester at PIR, but the early draw didn’t help.  Lester started outside the front row here in 2002 and never qualifiedf worse than 17th in five previous tries. His best finish is 15th.

John Mickel – The UK rookie tested a truck here in 2002 so it’s not his first time around at PIR. His UK-based team is here working with him as a prelude to a rookie assault in 2007.

Cameron Dodson – The young sprint car phenom has steadily adjusted to the heavier and more cumbersome stock cars. Mike Mittler is known for being an excellent mentor to young drivers, and Dodson is on track to join the likes of Kenny Irwin, Jamie McMurray and Carl Edwards as Mittler protégés to make it big.

Casey Kingsland – Kingsland has made one previous start in the Truck Series, at Martinsville in 2005. He spun in practice, but he has long time crew chief Gary Showalter calling the shots.

Many drivers are headed as quickly as they can to the airport to get back to the East Coast, so we have a shortened post-race show for you here tonight. We met up with Johnny Benson and talked about how hard he had to work tonight after doing his best Danny Sullivan imitation. We spoke to Mike Skinner and got his perspective of the first lap fandango that saw Benson go for a spin, and we talked to fourth-place finisher Todd Bodine about his race tonight and his outlook going into next week in Homestead. Matt Crafton talks about his fifth-place run, and we caught up with Erin Crocker - who we featured yesterday in an exclusive interview with team owner Ray Evernham - and talked to her about coming ever so close to her first top-15 finish.

We are on the same program as the drivers and making a hard charge for the airport as well. We will pick up coverage from Homestead next Thursday during the tech day at Homestead-Miami Speedway and then pick up live trackside updates on Friday. Until then so long everybody!
