Good Morning from Bristol!

08-23-2006  8:28 am

Good morning from Bristol Motor Speedway! It is going to be a very busy and very loud day here in Thunder Valley as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series teams prepare for their double-header later this evening. It should be a picture perfect day in the Blue Ridge Mountains as it is expected to reach into the mid 80s with very little chance of rain today. Earlier forecasts called for a 50-50 shot of showers, but weathercasters have revised their forecast and are now saying the area should be dry through Sunday. We will have all of the action throughout the day leading up to and including practice, and of course we will bring you Live! Bud Pole Qualifying at 5:30 pm ET. We will have complete pre- and post-race coverage as well so stick with us throughout the day right here at TrackSideLive!

Keller to Assist Crocker

08-23-2006  8:40 am

NASCAR Busch Series veteran Jason Keller has been retained by Evernham Motorsports to assist in the setup of the No. 98 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge for its regular driver Erin Crocker. Keller will take the controls throughout the first practice to give the team a solid baseline for Crocker. The driver changes will not be much of an issue since Keller and Crocker are virtually the same height. The seat insert that Crocker uses will be removed for Keller, which will allow him to slip in and out easily.

Crew Chief Changes for Musgrave

08-23-2006  8:45 am

There is a new crew chief for the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota and defending series champion Ted Musgrave. Tom Ackerman has left the Germain Racing team, which has allowed former ppc Racing crew chief Rick Gay to assume the leadership role for Musgrave. Gay worked with Terry Cook in 2005 before moving over to work with ppc's NBS program and driver John Andretti in 2006.

Picture Time...

08-23-2006  8:49 am

The sun is shining at the NCTS teams are hard at work, so it seems like a great time to head out and get some pictures of the teams getting their trucks through tech. We'll take a spin up and down pit lane with the camera and get back to give you some more updates shortly.

Hooter's Practice Action-packed So Far

08-23-2006  9:39 am

Just about 45 minutes into USAR Hooter's Pro Cup practice and we have seen a day's worth of action so far. The action started on the second hot lap of practice as Matt Carter spun and hit the wall coming out of four - right where your intrepid pit reporter was out taking pictures. Seconds later, two more cars arrived on the scene with Randy Gentry hopping over a wheel of another car and nearly turning over. About 10 minutes later, Scott Davis spun off turn four and popped the inside wall on the frontstretch - again, right where the intrepid TruckSeries.com reporter was standing on pit road. To prevent further excitement, I have moved back into the infield media center in efforts to keep these drivers from aiming their vehicles at where I am standing!

BMS Track Facts

08-23-2006  10:17 am

Here is the low-down on Bristol Motor Speedway...

BMS is a 0.533-mile oval with turns banked an incredible 36 degrees, the steepest in American motorsports. Even the straightaways are banked here, and although they appear flat on television they are tilted at 16 degrees. For a quick comparison, the turns at California Speedway are banked at 14 degrees.

Both straightaways are just 650 feet long, not giving anyone any time to rest here at all.

The 200-lap race distance is 106.5 miles, one of the shortest races we run all season long. Only the 200-lap/105.2-mile fall race at Martinsville is shorter.

Hooter's Cup Practice...

08-23-2006  10:35 am

Winding down the Hooter's Cup practice leading up to the start of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series practice and there are several names with NASCAR and particularly Truck Series connections entered in the Food City 150.

Joey Lagano, former protege of Mark Martin and member of the Joe Gibbs Racing development program currently leads. Lagano is still below the age limit for a NCTS ride, but is someone many team owners are keeping a close eye on in hopes of landing him in a seat. Former NCTS part-time competitor Shane Wallace sits second, with former Spears Motorsports driver Bobby Gill in 7th. Dale Earnhardt's new Busch driver Shane Huffman is ninth, while another former part-timer in the NCTS Michael Ritch is 12th. Justin Hobgood is 14th, Carl Long 15th, Jody Lavender 20th, Rick Markle 22nd, Billy Bigley, Jr. 23rd, Bill Manfull 38th and Chris Fontaine 39th.

Hooter's Cup speeds are nearly a full second slower than times expected in the NCTS. Lagano's fast time is 16.092 seconds.

We will also have some additional images throughout, and as soon as it's finished we'll scour the garage to get some audio interviews with the drivers as well. Keep it locked on TrackSideLive! for all the news and notes from BMS...

Darnell Spins on Frontstretch

08-23-2006  11:18 am

Erik Darnell just did a quick loop on the frontstretch without hitting anything. The red flag is out for a quick checkup of the surface. We should be green monentarily.

As Erik Darnell came off turn four, he crossed the oil and went for a long slide down the frontstretch. The track crew spent several minutes cleaning the concrete surface and we are back to green flag action.

Kerry Earnhardt spun off turn two, and as the drivers scrambled to avoid, Mike Skinner got into the back of his teammate Bill Lester. Lester's truck was undamaged in the incident, but Skinner's Jeff Hensley-led crew is busy affecting repairs to the nose of the No. 5 Toyota.

Peters Scrubs the Wall in Final Moments of Practice

08-23-2006  12:35 pm

Timothy Peters gave credence to the old racing addage that a loose race car (or obviously in our case, a truck) is a fast race car. Peters got loose off turn four in the final moments of the first practice and scraped the wall, slightly scuffing the right side of the No. 4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge. The team is making a quick check of the right side for damage and applying some tape to hide the battle scars, but the truck should be sound for final practice at the top of the hour.

Richardson Loops It in Turn 2

08-23-2006  1:10 pm

Audio!

08-23-2006  4:04 pm

Check out the Sights and Sounds Box for driver audio following today's practice session.

Brendan Gaughan tells us how the No. 77 Dodge team has turned the corner, and tells us what it takes to get around a place as tough as Bristol. Bobby Hamilton, Jr. spoke to us about his second straight strong performance on concrete in Tennessee, and the importance of a good qualifying effort at Bristol. Chad McCumbee tells us what kept him off the track throughout much of the first practice and how that might affect him later on this evening. We also met up with Joey Miller and he told us what he has going on following tonight, his final ride in the No. 12 Toyota. Timothy Peters spoke out his strong performance in the first practice which saw him at the top of the sheet, and the importance of the qualifying draw here this afternoon. We tracked down David Ragan and got his thoughts on running the No. 50 Ford this weekend, and asked him if having a wily veteran like Mark Martin on his team is an asset for he and his fellow rookie teammate Erik Darnell. David Reutimann also spoke with us about the necessity of power steering in Thunder Valley, and says while he doesn't think his truck is as flat-out fast as it was last year, he has a better outlook for the race.

We also met up with Lance Hooper, crew chief for the No. 13 ThorSport Racing Chevrolet, and got the low-down on what type of setup it takes to be successful on the World's Fastest Halfmile.

Click on each name to listen.

Gary Showalter is here even though the No. 02 Sutton Motorsports team has closed up shop. Showalter said he expects the assets of the Sutton team to be sold by the end of next week.

"There are a couple of new teams starting next year that are looking at the trucks," he said. "And a Cup team is looking at the hauler as a practice hauler. I expect by the end of next week everything will be sold out."

Showalter is here assisting Barry Dodson and the Key Motorsports team this week.
