Good afternoon from Kentucky Speedway
07-07-2006 12:53 pm
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to TrackSideLive! coverage of the Built Ford Tough 225 from Kentucky Speedway, presented exclusively at TruckSeries.com by our friends at Fastenal. It is a wonderful afternoon here in northern Kentucky as the sun is shining brightly, there is a nice gentle breeze blowing across the track, and temperatures are expected to be pleasant, perhaps reaching the mid 80s. NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams are finishing up preparations for practice, which should start at 2 pm ET. We'll have all the action from the track as it happens, so stick around.
Entry List Updates
07-07-2006 12:57 pm
The original entry list showed 39 teams entered, but with the withdrawal of the No. 51 Chevrolet by Billy Ballew Motorsports, we are down to 38 teams in the running for the 36 spots in the starting lineup for the Built Ford Tough 225.
Brad Keselowski is in the No. 02 Sutton Motorsports Chevrolet this week while Kelly Sutton recuperates from her injuries sustained in a crash last week in Kansas.
Wayne Edwards is listed in the No. 07 US Restoration Chevrolet for Green Light Racing.
Kevin Grubb moves into the No. 15 Chevrolet for Billy Ballew, replacing Kyle Krisiloff. Sponsorship is from Woodard Pools.
Todd Shafer is back to attempt his first race since Mansfield in the No. 19 Westerman Co. & Truck Insurance 4-U Ford.
Michel Jourdain is in the No. 50 Roush Racing Ford, meaning David Ragan is in the No. 6 Scotts Ford.
Justin Allgaier is entered for the third week in the No. 63 Dave Porter Truck Sales Ford.
J.C. Stout is entered in the No. 91 Hunter's Hope Foundation Chevrolet for the first time since attempting Gateway in April.

Only Two Doing Double Duty
07-07-2006 1:14 pm
Only two drivers will be attempting double duty here this weekend, in the ARCA REMAX Series race and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. Both Justin Allgaier and Erin Crocker will attempt both races. Crocker is locked into the Truck race but must qualify on speed for the ARCA race while Allgaier is locked into the ARCA race but must qualify the Truck on speed.
Truck info...
07-07-2006 1:19 pm
Here are some tidbits about some of the Trucks being raced here this weekend:
Erin Crocker is driving the same truck she qualified second earlier this season at Charlotte...the truck Erik Darnell is racing is a brand new chassis that has never been raced...the truck David Ragan is driving is the same truck which carried him to a sixth-place finish in Kansas; the team had orginally planned on bringing the truck they ran at Texas but changed their plan after a strong run last week...Michel Jourdain is driving the truck David Ragan ran 19th with at Michigan...Mike Skinner is running his favorite truck here this weekend, a truck that has carried him to four poles and two top-five finishes; he's run it at Charlotte, Texas, Michigan, and Kansas...Boston Reid is driving the truck has last ran at to a 17th-place finish at Michigan...

Top-3 Sweep
07-07-2006 1:34 pm
Last week's Blue Oval top-3 in Kansas with Ford drivers Terry Cook, Rick Crawford, and Marcos Ambrose sweeping the top three was the second such finish for any manufacturer in 2006. The other top-3 sweep was by Toyota at Gateway, and was in fact a top-5 sweep when Todd Bodine, Ted Musgrave, David Reutimann, Jack Sprague, and Johnny Benson placed a Tundra in all five top positions.

Practice Underway
07-07-2006 3:20 pm
The teams have been on track for about 10 minutes with no incidents, and the TrackSideLive! camera was out gathering some images of the drivers as they made their way out onto the speedway. Ryan Moore, Kraig Kinser, and Ted Musgrave led the charge onto the track when the light flashed green, but it's David Starr, Bobby Hamilton, Jr., and Rick Crawford on top of the charts just moments in. We'll have a complete timing update shortly.

Reutimann's Rig Late
07-07-2006 4:12 pm
David Reutimann's truck arrived late to the Kentucky Speedway after the tractor pulling the transporter broke down en route. The team was able to disconnect the tractor pulling Joey Miller's transporter, which had already arrived at the speedway, and sent it back to pick up Reutimann's trailer. The delay in getting here hasn't seemed to hurt as Reutimann has been at or near the front of the charts throughout the first practice.

Earnhardt Holds Top Spot
07-07-2006 7:55 pm
Kerry Earnhardt was able to hold the top spot as the red and black flags have fallen over the Kentucky Speedway. Musgrave, Reutimann, and Ambrose rounded out the top five. Earnhardt is feeling under the weather suffering from a bad head cold, so this performance will definitely have him feeling better. Results will be posted to the Event Box shortly.
Earnardt Leads Speed Charts; Qualifying Next Up Tomorrow
07-07-2006 9:09 pm
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams are done for the day here at Kentucky Speedway, but we still have a lot on tap here the rest of the weekend. Live! Bud Pole Qualifying comes your way tomorrow at 4:15 pm ET, and then we'll kick off our pre-race coverage leading up to the Built Ford Tough 225, round 13 of the 2006 season.
Kerry Earnhardt was the quickest on the day in the No. 13 ThorSport Racing Chevrolet, leading a resurgent Ted Musgrave, Johnny Benson, David Reutimann, and Marcos Ambrose. Chad Chaffin made an impressive return to the series with a sixth-place showing in the final session, while Mike Skinner, Bobby East, David Starr, and former Busch Series regular Kevin Grubb rounded out the top ten.
Eight drivers are fighting for the six non-guaranteed starting positions in tomorrow's lineup:
Earnhardt was first, Kraig Kinser 28th, Michel Jourdain 30th, Ryan Moore 31st, Justin Allgaier 34th, and Robert Richardson 35th as those six drivers would have made the field if it was set based upon practice times. Both JC Stout and Todd Shafer are looking for additional speed leading up to tomorrow's roll for the pole.
There were no on-track incidents in the practice sessions here at Kentucky today.
We will pick up TrackSideLive! coverage from Kentucky Speedway and the Built Ford Tough 225 tomorrow at 2 pm ET.
Good night everybody!
Race Day in Kentucky
07-08-2006 1:52 pm
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to our raceday coverage of the Biuilt Ford Tough 225 from Kentucky Speedway. We have a lot on tap for you this afternoon as we lead up to Live! Bud Pole Qualifying at 4:15 pm ET. We'll preview tonight's race, and once the checkered hits the breeze we'll stay deep into the night to bring you all the post race coverage we possibly can. Stick around throughout the afternoon and into the evening, we'll have it all from Kentucky for you right here!
Kentucky Weather
07-08-2006 1:57 pm
It's a little warmer and feels a touch muggier than it did yesterday here in Kentucky, but it is still a very pleasant day here. Temps will again reach into the 80s, and there are some puffy white clouds that occasionally drift in front of the sun to give everyone a little shade every now and then. The wind isn't blowing like it was yesterday, so the lack of the soft breeze makes it feel a little warmer still. There is no threat of rain, and it should be a perfect night for racing.
Prelims on the Quarter Mile
07-08-2006 2:00 pm
Yesterday it was the ARCA REMAX Series that was on track with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Today the USAC Ford Focus Midgets are in the infield quarter-mile throughout the afternoon. Many of the NCTS team members have taken an opportunity to walk up to the fence to watch for a few moments as the frontstretch of the quarter-mile is actually pit road of the 1.5-mile.
Earnhardt Under the Weather
07-08-2006 2:03 pm
What makes Kerry Earnhardt's solid performance yesterday all the more impressive is that he has been under the weather all weekend, suffering from a bad cold. "I feel okay, I just don't sound okay," Earnhardt said yesterday prior to second practice, in which he was the quickest.
More Wall Scrapers
07-08-2006 2:07 pm
As we reported yesterday during practice, Joey Miller pancaked the side of the No. 12 Curb Records Toyota in happy hour. The Waltrip Motorsports team banged out the damage and Miller's truck has already been through pre-qualifying inspection.
Another driver that knocked the new off his truck was Kevin Grubb. Grubb's No. 15 Woodard Pools Chevrolet showed some scuff marks on the right rear corner, indicating and up-close-and-personal meeting with the fence.
Another truck that showed some damage to the right rear but wasn't scuffed up was the No. 6 Scott's Ford of David Ragan. The rear quarter behind the tire appeared to have been damaged and repaired, but there are no tell-tale scrapes that would lead to believe he was up against the fence.
Rough Weekend for PR Reps
07-08-2006 2:11 pm
It has been a rough weekend off the track for a couple of the NCTS public relations reps.
Jeffrey Sturek, PR man for Terry Cook, showed up with some scrapes on his nose, the result of a swimming pool accident. When reminded that Mike Bliss won here at Kentucky in 2002 - and went on to the series championship that season - after breaking his nose in a charity softball game, Cook suggested Sturek finish the job and take one for the team.
Jayson Kaplan, PR rep for the Germain Racing team, showed up this afternoon with his left thumb wrapped in a bandage. Kaplan won't discuss details, but serveral members of his team have their theories, including a wild bar fight after hours last night.
We like giving our friends on the PR side a little ribbing now and then, get well soon guys.

Benson and Crawford Streaking
07-08-2006 2:52 pm
Rick Crawford's streak of 210 consecutive NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts ended here last season with a crash in qualifying. He enters the Kentucky race this season on a different streak. Crawford has currently scored a top-ten finish in each of the last five races dating back to Dover in June. Crawford is one of two drivers to have scored top ten runs in each of those five races - Dover, Texas, Michigan, Milwaukee, and Kansas. Crawford's current streak of runs has him fifth in the championship standings.
Only Johnny Benson has matched, and even exceeded that streak, adding another top ten finish at Mansfield to stretch his streak to six. Benson's hot streak - which includes two wins - has pushed him to third in the standings.
Interestingly enough, Crawford and Terry Cook were at the back of the top ten in Milwaukee, with Crawford ninth and Cook tenth. The order was reversed at the front of the field at Kansas, with Cook first and Crawford second.

Two to the Back
07-08-2006 7:13 pm
Two drivers will drop to the back of the field for the start tonight. Kraig Kinser scrubbed the wall on his second lap, and his team was forced to make repairs during impound, which is a violation of NASCAR rules. Terry Cook will tie Rick Crawford's "Iron Man" streak here tonight, and he too will be forced to come from the back after a post-qualifying engine change.

Pits are open, Ambrose and Gaughan stay out as the rest of the lead pack comes to the pits.

Hornaday Scored 29th Career Win in Kentucky

Hornaday Wins 29th Career Truck Series Race in Kentucky
Ron Hornaday drove the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet to victory in Saturday night's Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway. Hornaday started 22nd on the night, avoided trouble when leader Mike Skinner was involved in a turn two crash with lapped traffic, and held off a determined Rick Crawford to take his second victory of 2006. Hornaday's previous victory came at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in May.
Hornaday's lucky break was Skinner's bad break. Skinner, who had the dominant truck on the night, restarted the race in the lead on lap 126, but was buried deep in the field due to several drivers being trapped on the tail end of the lead lap when a caution came out in the midst of a round of green flag pit stops. On lap 129, Skinner turned sideways in a pack of trucks after he and Dennis Setzer came together. Skinner fought to regain control, but made hard contact with the nose of his truck with the backstretch wall. Hornaday took the lead and was never headed, although he held back a furious charge by Crawford and Brendan Gaughan over the final 9 laps.
"I saw Rick and Brendan on my back bumper and I was surprised," Hornaday said. "I had it on the floor the entire time those final laps - I never lifted it once - and those guys were still catching me. I thought we still had 10 laps to go because I never saw the flagman give the five to go signal so I was pretty relieved to see the white flag. Rick and Brendan got to racing for second, and I was hoping Johnny Benson would get in there and make it a three way race too. We finally got it loose enough on one of these big speedways. I can't thank everyone at Kevin Harvick Incorporated enough."
Hornaday credits a mid-season conversation with his team owner for the resurgence in his team after a slow start to 2006.
"We got off to a slow start this season," he said. "We had a loose wheel at Daytona, and there's nothing you can really do about that. But after that, we never seemed to run the way we did in 2005. I got a phone call from Kevin and he told me he and Delana would do everything they could to get this program turned around. It's all new people here from last year. All of those guys from the Truck team last season are working on the Busch program and the Truck team has a bunch of great young kids now. We still get a lot of help from Wally and the guys, but Stacy Johnson and everyone with us here, we're just having a great time right now."
For Crawford, he picks up his second consecutive runner-up finish in Tom Mitchell's No. 14 Circle Bar Truck Corral Ford, and it comes at the track which jumped up and bit him last season.
"We had a great truck here this weekend and once again we made some bold moves out there on the track to get us a second place finish," Crawford said. "I used to think about coming back here to Kentucky and what happened here last season a lot. But once we got here, I never once thought about it while I was out on the track. I could have looked left off turn two and looked at the spot where we crashed, but I never did. We had a great race with my good friend Brendan there late in the race, and were able to get second again. We're close to a win, all we need is one more spot. I'm a big Elvis fan, maybe we can pick that Elvis trophy up next week in Memphis."
For Gaughan, his third place finish in the No. 77 Orleans Racing Dodge was his best finish since a third-place run at Memphis last summer.
"How about that, we finally had to go to the media center after a race," Gaughan joked. "What an incredible night for the Orleans team. We had great pit stops all night long, and this thing ran the high groove perfectly all night too. Rambo (crew chief Tony Liberati) made great pit calls and we brought it home. This team has been under a lot of pressure. There's pressure from Michael Gaughan to run well and there's pressure from Dodge to run well. There's pressure to run well and attract a sponsor to this team. We found an old shock package that brought truck number one - Lonestar, the oldest truck in our fleet - to life. I'm telling those guys to JB Weld those shocks to this truck and we'll be good to go on the mile and a halfs the rest of the season."
Johnny Benson finished fourth in the No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota, his seventh consecutive top ten Truck Series finish.
"We knocked the nose clean off if it when someone up front brake checked us on a restart," Benson said. "I got hit hard from behind and I hit the guy in front of me really hard. We had it all taped up, and even got up and led the race there for a while, even if it was by default under pit stops. We're not racing for points yet, we want to go out and win races, but we had a good points night and got the best finish we could tonight."
David Ragan finished fifth to score his first career top-five Truck Series finish in the No. 6 Scott's Ford, in front of defending series champion Ted Musgrave in the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota, Matt Crafton in the No. 88 Menards Chevrolet, David Starr in the No. 11 Red Horse Racing Toyota, Erik Darnell in the No. 99 Roush Racing Ford, and Todd Bodine in the No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota.
The race was slowed by eight cautions for 33 laps, holding the average speed to just 118.110 miles per hour. The race got off to a slow start when Kraig Kinser had trouble in turn one on lap 2, collecting Justin Allgaier and Wayne Edwards in the process. Edwards was able to continue but brought out the second caution of the night when he crashed on his own in turn two on lap 23. Bobby East crashed in turn three on lap 29, while solo spins by Chad Chaffin and then Michel Jourdain on laps 59 and 123 also brought out the caution. After the Skinner and Setzer incident on lap 130, the final caution was caused by a slide through the frontstretch grass by Brad Keselowski on lap 139. All drivers involved in incidents were seen and released at the track's infield care center.
Todd Bodine continues to lead the series championship standings over Johnny Benson by 144 points heading into the next series event at Memphis Motorsports Park next Saturday night.
