Good Morning from The Mile!

06-23-2006  9:30 am

TrackSideLive! Presented by Team ASE Good morning from the oldest speedway in America, the beautiful and historic Milwaukee Mile. It is a glorious day here in southern Wisconsin as the sun is shining down brightly, there is a gentle breeze, some puffy white clouds are off in the distance, and we are expecting high temperatures in the low to mid 70s today, with temps in the upper 60s at race time. We have a lot on tap today as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series practices, qualifies, and then goes for 200 miles in the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200 at 9:15 pm ET. We'll have all the news and notes from the garage, Live! Bud Pole Qualifying, and a ton of pre- and post-race coverage for you throughout the day, so stick with us here at TrackSideLive!, exclusively at TruckSeries.com.

Bowling for Tools

06-23-2006  9:33 am

Series sponsor Craftsman hosted a bowling night for series drivers last night at Bluemound Bowl in nearby Brookfield, and it was weel-received by drivers and media alike. There were nearly 20 drivers on hand, including Brendan Gaughan, Boston Reid, Matt Crafton, Kerry Earnhardt, Dennis Setzer, Kraig Kinser, Aric Almirola, David Ragan, Erik Darnell, Michel Jourdain, Kyle Krisiloff, Johnny Benson, Bill Lester, NCTS communications manager Owen Kearns, series PR reps Judy Dominick, Chip Wile, Jayson Kaplan, Rory Connellan, Jennifer Blake, Mike Snow, Speed Channel personalities Rick Allen, Phil Parsons, Ray Dunlap, and several local media personalities.

Krisiloff scored the night's high game for the drivers with a 199 in his first game, which he promptly followed with a 93 (yes, that's without the 1 in front of it). Phil Parsons also rolled a 199 and followed with a 157 to take overall honors, while Ray Dunlap's 147 was good enough for media honors.

Bluemound Bowl also measures speed of the ball at moment of impact with the pins, and that was a heated competition as well. Darnell put one down at 26.4 early on, but was blown away later in the night by Reid who scorched the lanes at 34.1.

The most important thing for the night, to quote newspapers from days gone by, was that a good time was had by all.

Bobby Hamilton Update

06-23-2006  10:44 am

Everyone is wondering how Bobby Hamilton is progressing in his cancer treatments, so we spoke to a BHR rep to bring you the news. "He is feeling better each and every day," said Amanda Jones, pr rep for the team. "The doctors say the medicines will be out of his body in the next week or so, and he'll start to feel a lot better. He's starting to do exercises to build up his strength, and he is truly in a recovery period."

Hamilton has been busy, staying active in the management of the BHR team and receiving visitors. Richard Petty, Kyle Petty, and Robbie Loomis paid a visit to check in on the 2004 NCTS champion.

Continued best wishes to Bobby from all of us at TruckSeries.com.

New Craftsman Motorsports Display Debuts at Milwaukee

06-23-2006  5:49 pm

Fans looking for fun before the green flag drops at the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) race Friday can have their first look at the new interactive display from Craftsman Motorsports. Where else could they see the inner workings of a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race truck as it literally spins 360 degrees upside down?

Short of actually being a member of a NASCAR pit crew, this may be the closest race fans get to the behind-the-scenes action in the garage. And the first 3000 fans who visit the display and register will receive a $5 Sears reward card and other Craftsman Official Tools of NASCAR items while supplies last. The Craftsman interactive display is making a 16-city  tour to the remaining 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races.  The tour will visit all 25 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Races in 2007 as well as various NASCAR fan events throughout the year.

The interactive display is an 8,000 square foot, two-trailer fan experience with:

*Three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in-motion racing simulators.
*Autograph sessions with drivers Kraig Kinser and Dennis Setzer.
*The only place fans can see the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship Trophy on display.
*A NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series  race truck cut in half to reveal all the inner workings, and mounted on a “rotisserie” so fans can view it at any angle as well as view a Craftsman Crew Chief work on the truck, with fan participation.
*Interactive games and competitions -- see how you compare to a NASCAR jackman with the Craftsman Jackman Challenge or how fast you can tighten a spark plug with the Craftsman ergo flex-head quick release ratchet.
*Have your photo taken with a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Truck or a video taken inside the  truck and email it to friends and family instantly.
*Visit “Tools of the Trade” interactive stations and learn how Craftsman tools are used in the NASCAR garage, and how fans can use them back in their home garage.
*Official Tools of NASCAR Premium items.

The display makes its debut here at Milwaukee this weekend.

Who Needs in on Speed?

06-23-2006  5:53 pm

There are eight drivers fighting for the six non-guaranteed starting positions in the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200.  Here are their fastest times from practice, with the session it was turned in parenthesis:

Sauter, 30.001 (Final)
Lester, 30.322 (First)
Earnhardt, 30.463 (Rookie)
Jourdain, 30.471 (Final)
Wallace, 30.607 (Final)
Allgaier, 30.647 (Final)
Moore, 30.671 (First)
Richardson, 30.895 (Rookie)

Drivers listed in green would be in had these times been turned in qualifying , drivers listed in red would miss the field.

Sparkies Out in Force

06-23-2006  6:08 pm

No one has more dedicated fans than Steve Park, and the Sparkies are out in force here in Milwaukee.  Park had the longest line for autographs earlier today, and as he usually does, took time out for pictures with as many fans as he could.  All the drivers were out spending time with the fans here at Milwaukee today as there are hundreds of people in the garage getting up close and personal with their favorite drivers.  It's one of the few opportunities the fans have throughout the year to spend time this close with the teams and drivers, which makes it a favorite stop for most everyone involved.

Live! Bud Pole Qualifying Up Next!

06-23-2006  6:16 pm

It has been an uneventful afternoon here at The Milwaukee Mile so far as practice was clean and green with only some stoppages for debris slowing the action on the track.  With no incidents, no one has had to go to a backup truck, and we haven't heard of any engine changes to this point to report on either.

Things are about to heat up at the bottom of the hour as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series rolls for the pole as we get ready for Live! Bud Pole Qualifying for the Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200 .  We'll rejoin you with more TrackSideLive! coverage from the Milwaukee Mile as soon as qualifying concludes.  Click on the link above to join our live qualifying updates.

Templates Catch Hamilton in Inspection

06-23-2006  8:05 pm

The nose on Bobby Hamilton's No. 18 Fastenal Dodge had problems making NASCAR inspectors happy, and while the team was able to make repairs to the truck, the team wasn't able to make them in time to make a qualifying run. Hamilton, who was second quickest in the first practice, will start 35th tonight.

Transmission Change Sends Moore to Back

06-23-2006  8:09 pm

Johnny Benson won in truck No. 23 on June 23rd, and utilized pit stall 23 today. Sometimes the numbers just all line up!

Audio!

06-24-2006  1:29 am

There's a ton of post-race audio for you to check out at your leisure...

Johnny Benson, No. 23 Toyota Ceritified Used Vehicles Toyota, finished first: "It was amazing to be able to win at MIS and then here at Milwaukee. It's great to be able to that here in the Midwest. I want to go and win down south out west and out east next. I want to get greedy!"

Rick Ren, winning crew chief: "I used to drive racecars. I won 130 races as a driver, so I know what a driver is looking for. We don't have any need for egos. We're just two guys out there trying to win races."

Mike Bliss, No. 16 IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet, finished second: "Catching him and getting around him were going to be two different things. We threw a lot of stuff at the truck and everything we did didn't make it turn. We made an educated guess and it turned good all night. That was the key."

Ron Hornaday, No. 33 Kevin Harvick, Inc. Chevrolet, finished third: "If we made changes we might have tightened it up too much. We'll take third. I burned the tires off it and that's my fault. But we'll take third and be happy with it."

Jack Sprague, No. 60 Con-way Freight Toyota, finished fourth: "I am grateful, but man, I want to win a race. I thought in practice we had a shot at it. We were just way way tight in the center. When we had to put on tires with 85 laps to go I knew that was it for us."

David Reutimann, No. 17 Team Tundra Toyota, finished fifth: "I am happy. The guys did a great job. We kept beating on it and making adjustments, and with everything else you do on pit stops we were still able to pick up spots on pit road."

Timothy Peters, No. 4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge, finished sixth: "If not for slipping in some oil that might be two top ten finishes in a row. I hope we had all of our bad luck out of the way. We started off last year good and it went bad on us. Hopefully this year it's the opposite and we start off bad and finish good."

Benson Takes Two with Milwaukee Win

Benson Takes Two with Win in Milwaukee

After coming close to victory several times in his first 58 starts but never taking home the winner's trophy, Johnny Benson has more than made amends by picking up his second consecutive NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory in Saturday night's Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200. The 1995 NASCAR Busch Series champion took the lead for the final time on lap 160 and led convincingly the rest of the way, holding off 2002 series champion Mike Bliss by 2.249 seconds to take home the $55,500 winner's purse.

Benson was forced to deal with a dominant Ron Hornaday throughout the night on his way to the victory. Hornaday, who started from the pole, led a race high 102 laps but fought a loose condition in the latter stages of the race. Eventually Benson was able to size up Hornaday's weakness and take advantage, driving off to nearly a five second lead within twenty laps to go. Hornaday was not able to hold off a fast-closing Mike Bliss, who darted into second with with seven laps to go and chopped Benson's advantage in half, but ran out of laps before he could make a run for the lead and the win.

After going winless for so long in the Truck Series, Benson is overwhelmed with the success he and his Bill Davis Race team have found recently with the No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehciles Toyota.

"It's almost too much to handle," Benson said in victory lane. "Winning at MIS last week was big, no doubt about it. Winning here at Milwaukee is equally as big. This is one of the most historic race tracks in the world, and to be able to win here is a very big deal. I was fortunate enough to win here in the ASA several years ago, and to come back and win here with the Truck is incredible. It's close to home, which is nice too. I've won two here in the Midwest, now we need to get some of these wins down south and out west too."

Bliss was closing quickly in the No. 16 IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet, but ran out of laps before he could mount a challenge for the win. For Bliss, the performance was impressive after difficult practice and qualifying sessions earlier in the day.

"We really struggled here earlier today," Bliss said. "Dave (Fuge) always had a good setup here and ran well here with (Jack) Sprague here last year. But that didn't work this year and we were out to lunch. I know they made some changes because it really ran well on the long run late in the race. We got it to where it would rotate in the corner and we were really good late in the race. You never know what to expect when you're racing Sprague and Hornaday like that. They won't wreck you but they'll drive you hard. If we didn't have to race Sprague so hard we might have been able to chase down Johnny, but catching and passing is two different things."

Hornaday was relegated to third at the finish in the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet after leading more than half the race.

"We learned some things here today that are going to make this team stronger," Hornaday said. "We just got too loose to run with Johnny at the end. But Wally Rogers and all of these kids we have on this team are all very young and willing to learn. We don't have an official crew chief on this team yet, but we have a lot of people who are stepping in to help out, and they deserve to have runs like this here tonight. I just wish we could have given them a win."

Jack Sprague finished fourth in the No. 60 Con-way Freight Toyota. Sprague forced a smile after the checkered, happy to finish among the top five but for a three-time series champion looking for his first win in over a year, anything less than a trip to victory lane is disappointing.

"Fourth is okay, but man, I want to win a race," Sprague said. "I mean, yeah, we were okay. I just want to give these guys a win. The Wyler's came into this series a year ago here in Milwaukee, and I thought today was the day we were going to get it. We raced hard with Bliss there late. I raced here in that truck last year and I know they always have a good setup. I fought hard with him, but he had a good truck because once he got passed me he motored on to Hornaday and blew past him too."

David Reutimann finished fifth in the No. 17 Team Tundra Toyota. Combined with an uncharacteristic performance by point leader Todd Bodine, Reutimann now closes the gap by fifty points in the chase for the NCTS championship.

"Fifth is okay, but I want to win," Reutimann said. "We did some things to the truck that didn't make it very happy. We've always run well with that truck, so it's not the truck it's what we did to it. But we were able to beat on it enough to get it to do what we wanted and we came out of here with a pretty good finish."

Timothy Peters finished a career-best sixth in the No. 4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge, the best finishing Dodge driver on the evening. Defending race winner Dennis Setzer was seventh in the No. 85 GM FlexFuel Chevrolet, Rick Crawford was ninth in the No. 14 Circle Bar Truck Corral Ford, and Terry Cook rounded out the top ten in the No. 10 Ford Power Stroke Diesel by International Ford.

Aric Almirola was the highest finishing Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate, finishing 13th in the No. 75 Spears Motorsports Chevrolet.

There were nine cautions for 37 laps, slowing the average speed tp 85.673 miles per hour. The only serious incident of the evening was on a restart on lap 96 when Matt Crafton was tapped by David Starr, who in turn was tapped by Almirola entering turn one. Crafton's No. 88 Menards Chevrolet slammed hard into the SAFER barrier in turn one, doing significant damage to the left rear. Crafton was able to drive back to the garage and salvaged a 34th-place finish, 49 laps off the pace. Others involved in incidents on the night inlcuded Bobby Hamilton, Jr. - who had just returned to the track after an extended green flag stop to replace a dead battery - who spun off turn four, Kerry Earnhardt, Joey Miller, Kelly Sutton, and point leader Todd Bodine - who spun in turn two after a tap from Erin Crocker to bring out the final caution of the night.

Bodine continues to lead Reutimann in the championship standings as Benson moves into third. Ted Musgrave has fallen back to fourth, Sprague sits fifth, Bliss sixth, Setzer seventh, Crawford eighth, Starr ninth, and Hornaday jumps into the top ten for the first time this season.

Next up for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 at the Kansas Speedway on Saturday July 1. TruckSeries.com will have complete event coverage starting on Friday June 30, including TrackSideLive! practice and qualifying updates, as well as comprehensive pre- and post-race coverage as well.
