TrackSideLive! from Mansfield
05-25-2006 10:00 am
Join us for coverage of the Mansfield 250 from Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in Mansfield Ohio starting Thursday May 25th with the Open Test session through the race Saturday May 27th.
Good Morning from Mansfield!
05-25-2006 11:38 am
Good morning from Mansfield Motorsports Speedway as we are just about set to start a four-hour open test session for this weekend's City of Mansfield 250. There are 38 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams on the property, and they are minutes away from their first laps of the day.
Skies are cloudy and overcast, and there are some showers in the area but we are still dry and should be for the bulk of the afternoon. We'll stick with you all afternoon and bring you all of the updates as they happen.
Trucks Rolling
05-25-2006 11:43 am
Kraig Kinser leads the charge onto the speedway, followed by Mike Skinner, Ted Musgrave, Todd Bodine, Robert Richarson, Jack Sprague, Erik Darnell and many others. The track should be extremely busy throughout the day as the teams work to find optimal setups for qualifying and the race.
Timing Updates Once and Hour
05-25-2006 11:58 am
Thanks to NASCAR scoring that will give us a complete timing update at the top of every hour. As today is an optional test session, NASCAR officials are still setting up many of their systems for official competition tomorrow. Again, big thanks to Betsy Tyler and her crew for their assistance on a very busy day.
Drivers Using High Groove
05-25-2006 12:07 pm
Most of the drivers are working the high groove around the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway. While this is just an optional test, many drivers are out there racing to test the capabilities of their machines. Timothy Peters, David Ragan, and Michel Jourdain made a three-wide dash down the backstretch just moments ago.
Crews Busy
05-25-2006 12:37 pm
The crews are hard at work in the infield as their drivers swing on and off pit road. Most are making suspension changes, but several also are changing rear gears to fund that optimum ratio to give them good forward bite off the corners.
Ragan Wrecks in One
05-25-2006 12:43 pm
David Ragan has become the first driver to make contact with MMS's newly-installed SAFER barriers as he lost control in turn one and backed it into the fence, doing significant damage to the rear of the machine. It marks the second consecutive week the No. 6 Roush Racing team has lost their primary truck in testing.
Roush Racing to Make Repairs
05-25-2006 12:52 pm
As of now, the Roush team has yet to unload their backup truck after David Ragan's bout with the turn one wall. They have wheeled the primary truck back to the transporter and are hard at work repairing the damage to the rear of the truck. We'll keep you updated on their progress.
Backup in Ragan's Future
05-25-2006 1:14 pm
After evaluating the damage, the Roush team has decided to go to a backup truck.

Mike Hillman, Jr., crew chief on the No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota, will miss the City of Mansfield 250 due to the death of his father-in-law Jimmy Hager. Hager was a big part of the Germain Racing family, and will be sorely missed.
Hager is survived by his second wife, Joan Harris-Hager, whom he married November 9, 1975; children - Mike Hager and wife, CJ, Kim Moss, Gary Moss, Jennifer Hillman and husband, Mike Hillman, Jr., Jeff Moss and wife, Cindy; sister - Virginia H. Snap Spin by Sutton Slows Session
05-25-2006 1:40 pm
Kelly Sutton did a snap spin off turn four a short while ago to bring a stop to the action. She didn't make contact with the wall or another truck and drove back to the pit area.
Rigs in the Infield
05-25-2006 1:41 pm
For the first time in the event's three-year history, track officials here at MMS have allowed the teams to pull in the infield during practice and qualifying. It's not quite that simple though. After testing today, the rigs will be pulled out to participate in a parade through downtown Mansfield, then brought back in and parked in the same positions they are now for tomorrow's action. Once practice and qualifying is complete, they will move the rigs out to provide a clear view of the track for the fans.
Sun Popping Out
05-25-2006 1:51 pm
Mansfield Motorsports Speedway is not known to be one of the most temperature sensitive tracks on the schedule, but if it does fluctuate in surface temperature it's about to go up considerably as the sun has finally broken through the clouds. There are still some puffy while clouds floating overhead, but the sun is beating down brightly on us for now.
Moore also Making Series Debut
05-25-2006 1:56 pm
Ryan Moore is also here attempting to make his NCTS debut. Moore is wheeling the No. 40 Key Motorsports Chevrolet this weekend. Moore also drove in practice for the team at Gateway but relinquished the wheel to Chad Chaffin for the race. Moore is a Busch East Series veteran and is part of the DEI driver development program.
Sutton Spins in Four
05-25-2006 2:02 pm
Kelly Sutton looped it in turn four to bring out the red again for the third time of the day. Track officials will use this time to move some people in and out of the infield. We should be green shortly.
Keselowski Helping Richardson
05-25-2006 2:12 pm
Brad Keselowski has taken a few laps in the No. 1 Dodge to help give rookie Robert Richarson a baseline for his setup here at MMS.

Crafton Calls it a Day
05-25-2006 2:55 pm
Matt Crafton has more laps in a Truck around MMS than anyone. Before MMS joined the circuit in 2004, his ThorSport team used the track as a short track test facility. Those thousands of laps have come in handy today as the team has called it quits already, satisfied they have a strong baseline to work off come tomorrow morning when we get down to business for real. Crafton currently sits third on the sheets behind Mike Bliss and David Starr.

Weather Close to What's Expected Saturday
05-25-2006 3:21 pm
The teams out making laps now will get valuable information on how their trucks will handle on raceday. Weather on Saturday is expected to be sunny and warm, with high temps in the low 80s. It has warmed up considerably here with the appearance of the sun.
MMS Not Unfamilair Turf to East
05-25-2006 3:30 pm
While many of the rookies here this weekend are strangers to Mansfield Motorsports Speedway, Bobby East is very familiar with the track. East won a USAC Sprint Car race here in 2004, one of 19 wins that season in each of USAC's top three national divisions.
Richardson Loops in Two
05-25-2006 3:49 pm
Robert Richardson made a slow slide off turn two just moments ago to again slow the test session here at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway. He slid 90 degrees sideways and came to a stop at the entrance to pit road without making contact. We're back to green flag action with just about ten minutes left in the session.
Test Over...Results Soon
05-25-2006 4:00 pm
We'll have a final time report as soon as we can get one from NASCAR timing and scoring. We are done with on-track activity for the day here, but the teams have more work to get done as there is a hauler parade and autograp session in downtown Mansfield. We'll prowl the garage area before they leave to get as much audio reaction to today's test as we can...stick around!

Audio on the way!
05-25-2006 5:29 pm
We have some good post test session audio heading your way right now...look to the Sights and Sounds box to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page for each clip as we get them posted...
Johnny Benson, No. 23 Toyota: "I was pretty happy. We started off a little slow but we just kept working and working. After we started getting the feel we started picking up speed..."
Matt Crafton, No. 88 Chevrolet: "We are very happy. We have the same truck we finished third with at Martinsville. We came out of the trailer and we were fast right out of the box..."
Dennis Setzer, No. 85 Chevrolet: "We haven't been very good. I've never been to a short track and been that far down the sheet..."
Timothy Peters, No. 4 Dodge: "We still have to get in the show. It is definitely a night and day difference from last week..."
Aric Almirola, No. 75 Chevrolet: "It's the same key everywhere we go. We are communicating well. The guys have the trucks prepared when we leave the shop and all we have to do is tweak on it..."
Brendan Gaughan, No. 77 Dodge: "We have our own engine shop right next door. Kevin Kroyer tells me all the time "we're like Doritos, use it up, we'll make more"..."
Terry Cook, No. 10 Ford: "It just didn't have the speed we wanted. We worked on race trim and we settled in around 15th spot, which is no where near acceptable for our program..."
That's it for now, see you tomorrow!
05-25-2006 5:40 pm
We have another storm rolling into the Mansfield area, so we are going to call it a night. We will pick up coverage of practice and qualifying here at 9 am Eastern tomorrow morning. Until then, good night everybody!

We're Back!
05-26-2006 4:13 pm
After a massive network meltdown here at MMS, TrackSideLive! is back! Our apologies for the lack of updates, but you haven't missed much. The final 20 minutes of practice was canceled after a brief but powerful storm rolled through the area. The teams are busy working on getting ready for qualifying, but they have had to dodge raindrops in doing so. We hope to stay online here at the track, and we will persevere though it one way or another. Stick around, we have some great images coming your way, and some good pre-qualifying audio clips with several of the big names ready to rumble for 250 laps here in Mansfield.
First Trucks Moving to Inspection
05-26-2006 4:19 pm
The first teams have started moving towards the inspection area as we move closer to qualifying time. The weather has improved, the sun is actually shining and the track is drying on its own. There are no showers in the immediate area so we have a good shot at getting qualifying rolling at it's perscribed time.

Well...More Rain
05-26-2006 6:48 pm
Well, unfortately a shower has popped up and has drenched the speedway once again. There are some more showers behind it, but they should move through and allow us time for qualifying before too long. Track crews are ready to start the drying process as soon as the weather allows.
Even more rain...
05-26-2006 7:47 pm
It's still raining and we're waiting on one more storm cell to pass over the Mansfield Motor Speedway and we can get qualifying in tonight.
The lights have been turned on at the track and it looks like we're going to wait it out. Keep it here for the latest information and don't forget when it's time to qualify, you can watch the results by

Qualifying Rained Out
05-26-2006 8:07 pm
Well, it just looks like the rain is not going to quit anytime soon, so NASCAR has decided to cancel qualifying for tonight. The lineup for tomorrow's race will be determined by the NASCAR rule book with starting positions being determined by owner points.
We still have more TruckShots! and driver interviews coming up... keep it here for more from Mansfield and be sure to join us for tomorrow's City of Mansfield 250!
Qualifying Rained Out; Mansfield Line-up Set by Points
05-26-2006 9:29 pm
By virtue of their standing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series owners points, Germain Racing teammates Todd Bodine and Ted Musgrave will share the front row for tomorrow's City of Mansfield 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway. The lineup was determined by the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series rule book after heavy rains left the track flooded, and persistent streams of water across turn three and the backstretch would not allow drying efforts to get started.
Bodine will start from the pole position in the No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota, with Musgrave alongside in the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota. Rookie driver Auggie Vidovich, making his first series start since 1999, will start third in the No. 6 Scott's Ford after Roush Racing pulled David Ragan from the seat yesterday. David Reutimann will start fourth in the Team Tundra Toyota, and home state favorite Terry Cook will go from fifth in the No. 10 Power Stroke Diesel Ford.
Johnny Benson will start sixth in the No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota, with David Starr in seventh in the No. 38 Red Horse Racing Toyota. Short track master Dennis Setzer will start eighth in the No. 85 GM FlexFuel Chevrolet, 2004 Mansfield winner Jack Sprague will start ninth in the No. 60 Con-Way Toyota, and Matt Crafton will round out the top ten starters in the No. 88 Menards/Energizer Chevrolet.
Several drivers were fast in practice, but due to the cancelation of qualifying will be forced to come from deep in the starting field. Timothy Peters was among the top ten in practice all afternoon, but will be forced to come from 34th on the grid. Joey Miller also had a fast truck in the practice sessions and will come from the 29th slot at the green.
There were no major incidents during the two-hour practice session during the afternoon, just a couple of minor spins. Vidovich got turned around and slid sideways down the front stretch, while his teammate Michel Jourdain - who along with Todd Shafer were the only two drivers to miss the field - did a lazy spin off turn two.
TruckSeries.com will have complete pre- and post-race coverage of the City of Mansfield 250 starting at 10 A.M. Eastern on Saturday.

Good Morning from MMS
05-27-2006 9:53 am
Good morning from Mansfield Motorsports Speedway! If the weather stays just like it is now, all of the frustration and aggrivation we faced yesterday will have been worth it. It is a picture postcard day here in the Mid-Ohio region, with sunny skies and temperatures expected to climb into the low 80s. We could use a tick less humidity, but what the heck, it's dry and warm and a great day to race regardless.
We will have complete pre- and post-race coverage here at TrackSideLive! so stick with us...
Fans on Track

One of the unique programs instituted here last season at Mansfield is the opportunity for the fans to come in early and take a walk around the speedway. They have a chance to move right up next to the pit wall and stand next to the trucks as they are pre-staged on pit road. Many hundreds of fans have arrived here early to do just that...

2. The field is on the final pace lap. All trucks are rolling.
1. Only one driver will move to the back of the pack, Marcos Ambrose. Ambrose is making the choice to move to the back, not doing so due to NASCAR penalty. Ryan Moore missed the driver's meeting, but his 36th starting position means he does not have to move back any farther. City of Mansfield Mayor Lydia Reed has given the command and 36 trucks have roared to life. Todd Bodine will start outside row 1.

05-27-2006 3:07 pm
30. The top eleven trucks all show battle scars. Bliss in twelfth looks remarkably clean. One lap to go before the restart. Hornaday leads Sprague, Starr, Miller, Benson, Setzer, Reutimann, Crafton, Park, Skinner, and Peters.
29. Hornaday leads Sprague, Starr, Miller, Benson, Setzer, Reutimann, Crafton, Park, Skinner, Peters, Bliss, Almirola, Hamilton, Darnell, Lagasse, Crawford, Reid, East, and Gaughan as Greenwell gets tagged and spins off turn four. He is narrowly avoided by his teammate Turner.
28. Sprague has caught Lester for second. Hornaday leads by half a straightaway. Ambrose spins and tags the wall hard in turn one. Musgrave and Earnhardt had gotten together in front and thrown up some smoke, so Ambrose may have been hard on the brakes to avoid and the truck jumped out from under him.
27. Heavy traffic at the front as Sprague, Starr, and others get out of shape off turn four. Moore comes to pit road.
26. Hornaday leads Lester, Sprague, Starr, Miller, Benson, Setzer, Reutimann, crafton, Skinner, Peters, Park, Bliss, Hamilton, Almirola, Darnell, Crawford, Reid, Earnhardt, Lagasse, Ambrose, Vidovich, East, Gaughan, Kinser, Moore, Crocker, TTurner, Bodine, Richardson, Cook, and Musgrave.
25. Eighth caution for debris at lap 115. Bodine decices the gamble is not worth it and comes to pit road, handing the lead to Musgrave. Cook also pits. Musgrave takes the lead for one lap and he too comes to pit road. Hornaday now leads.
24. Lap 110 - Sutton spins with no caution. Hornaday is on the move and moves Krisiloff in turn one to set saidl on the leaders. Is the gamble to not pit going to backfire on the Germain team? Miller blackflagged for loose sheetmetal.
23. Lap 99 - Crocker gets tagged and spun out of third. Just before her spin, Hornaday and Miller came together, with Hornaday nearly losing it down the backstretch.
22. East and Vidovich come to pit road with Kinser, Gaughan, and Moore.
21. Moore loops it in turn four and the caution is out for the sixth time. Crafton was on the move before the caution, aggressively looking underneath Reutimann for position. Several trucks starting to carry the battle scars of short track racing.
City of Mansfield 250 RaceUpdates 31-40
05-27-2006 3:37 pm
40. Benson looks underneath Miller for fourth. Miller holds him off as Starr now looks under Sprague for second. Kinser is behind the wall with rear end troubles. Skinner, East, and Krisiloff have been warned by NASCAR to cool down. Lester spins again to tie the record for cautions as the yellow comes out for the 16th time.
39. Lap 210 - Crocker and Krisiloff come together in turn four, cutting down Crocker's left front tire. Lester spins in turn one to bring out the series record tying fifteenth caution. Nope...the record was set this spring in Martinsville at 16 cautions. One more to tie.
38. We are one caution away from tying the series record. 45 laps to go. Hornaday leads as Lagasse makes contact with the wall onthe restart and comes to the pits.
37. East and Skinner come together down the backstretch, with East repaying the favor in turn three with a big punt to Skinner. Not to be outdone, Skinner repays East going into three the next lap, sending East hard into the turn three wall. Caution out again. East has heavy damage to the right front corner, including suspension damage. His day could be over after knocking on the door of a top ten.
36. Darnell and Peters lock horns in turn four for tenth. The top three are a straightaway ahead of Miller in fourth.
35. Darnell looks hard under Skinner on the restart for 12th. Hornaday stretches the advantage over Sprague and Starr who are fighting for second.
34. McCumbee slides through turn three and the caution is out yet again. Hornaday leads Sprague, Starr, Miller, Benson, Setzer, Reutimann, Crafton, Bliss, Park, Peters, Skinner, Darnell, Hamilton, Lagasse, East, Crawford, Reid, Bodine, Gaughan, Vidovich, Musgrave, Crocker, Kinser, Cook, Lester, Krisiloff, Sutton, and Earnhardt.
33. Lap 167 - Richardson goes up in smoke down the backstretch, but we stay green. Bliss is making his way into the top ten as Park gets loose in one and loses two spots.
32. Skinner and Almirola get together on the restart and Almirola slides into the inside frontstretch wall. There is damage to the right front and right rear, but he is able to drive away.

Hornaday Vindicated at Mansfield
05-27-2006 7:12 pm
Last year, Ron Hornaday left Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in a state of frustration. After dominating the race here last year, a late-race penalty for jumping a restart left him mired back in the pack and out of contention to win. Upon returning in 2006, Hornaday, driving Kevin Harvick's No. 33 Chevrolet, leaves vindicated after picking up his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series record 28th-career victory in the City of Mansfield 250.
Hornaday looked to have his work cut out for him early on as the Germain Racing teammates Todd Bodine and Ted Musgrave made a shambles of the field. Bodine started from the pole by virtue of his current standing in the series owner's points, and led the first 117 laps of the event with ease. However, the longer Bodine and Musgrave stayed out, the larger Hornaday loomed in their mirror. Hornaday pitted on lap 44, and his truck came to life and he quickly chased down the lead duo. Finally, under the eighth caution of the day - of a series record 18 which consumed 85 laps - Bodine and then Musgrave peeled off to pit road, handing the lead over to Hornaday.
"It's been an emotional week," Hornaday said. "We lost Ann, a girl who works in our office. She lost her life and we don't really know why. And T.J. Clark and his family lost their son Spencer. It's just been an emotional week. That's partly what that burnout was all about, I wanted to get a few minutes to get my emotions under control. But I am a competitive person, and (Kevin) Harvick always says he is the king of burnouts, and I wanted to show him I could go all the way around the track lighting them up. I guess that shows you how hard the tires are here that we went all that way and only blew out the right front."
While Hornaday was glad to pick up his first series win since Atlanta in March 2005, he said he never looked at Mansfield as a track that owed him anything.
"I didn't come up here thinking this place owed us anything," Hornaday said. "What happened last year was last year. We are focused on this year. This is a credit to my engineer Stacy Johnson. He said we would come pit around lap 40 and I said no way. He swore we could do it on this tire, and I put my trust in him that he was right, and he was."
Hornaday was comfortably ahead of runner-up Jack Sprague, a former Mansfield winner who has not finished any lower than second in three starts at the Ohio half-mile.
"I really didn't think we would be that good," Sprague said of his No. 60 Con-Way Freight Toyota. "I knew we were going to be a good top ten truck and possibly even a top five truck, but I didn't think we could get up there and fight for the win. The sun came out and our truck got pretty good. Congratulations to Ron and those guys for getting their win finally."
Sprague had his hands full over the course of the last 50 laps hold off the advances of a hard charging David Starr. Starr, in the No. 11 Red Horse Racing Toyota was the winner in the last series short track race at Martinsville Speedway in April. He believed his truck was a slightly quicker than Sprague's, but he didn't want to have to use the bumper to make a pass and possibly take himself and Sprague out of top five finishes.
"That's the type of racing you have when everyone is this close chassis wise and horsepower wise," Starr said. "It is so tough to pass out there that the only way I was going to get him was to use the bumper. He was blocking a little bit, and I would nudge him a little just to let him know I didn't like it, but I wasn't going to make a bump and run and risk taking us both out."
Johnny Benson recovered from a flat tire on lap seven to finish fourth in the No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota, and Joey Miller was the top finishing Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender in fifth driving the No. 12 Curb Records Toyota.
Matt Crafton gave Ohio-based ThorSport Racing a sixth place finish in the No. 88 Menards/Energizer Chevrolet, Dennis Setzer was seventh in the No. 85 GM FlexFuel E85 Chevrolet, Mike Bliss finished eighth in the No. 16 IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet, David Reutimann was ninth in the No. 17 Team Tundra Toyota, and Steve Park picked up his best finish of the season, rounding out the top ten in the No. 59 Harris Trucking Dodge.
There were a series record 18 caution flags, breaking the record set in April at Martinsville. The 85 caution laps held the average speed to just 62.999 miles per hour. Virtually every truck in the field showed battle scars of short track competition, and although many were involved in incidents there were only a couple that involved heavy wall contact. Aric Almirola got together with Mike Skinner on lap 163 that sent him hard into the inside wall on the frontstretch. Skinner was again involved in another incident, this time on the backstetch with Bobby East that sent East hard into the outside wall in turn three. Skinner and East were involved in a lap-long bumping grudge match that culminated in the accident.
Bodine and Musgrave each earned their worst finishes of the the 2006 season, finishing 15th and 16th respectively. Bodine continues to lead the championship standings by 20 over Musgrave. Reutimann is third, Starr fourth, Benson fifth, Sprague sixth, Setzer seventh, Crafton eighth, Terry Cook ninth, and Bliss tenth.
The AAA Insurance 200 is next up for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Dover International Speedway. TruckSeries.com will have complete event coverage starting with practice and qualifying updates on Thursday June 1st, and we'll have pre- and post-race coverage on Friday June 2nd.
Audio!!!
05-27-2006 7:16 pm
We have post-race audio for you from the City of Mansfield 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway...look to the Sights and Sounds Box and click on each driver's name to listen.
Winner, Ron Hornaday, No. 33 Chevrolet: "I was just trying to beat Kevin Harvick in burnouts. To go a half mile around Mansfield and only blow out the right front tells me they brought a real hard tire here..."
Runner-up, Jack Sprague, No. 60 Toyota: "It was cool. It was better than I thought we'd be. The sun came out and we had a better truck than I thought we'd have..."
Third place, David Starr, No. 11 Toyota: "It's hard to pass here and the trucks are so equal. There was some blocking there, but that's fair game in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series..."
Fifth-place, Joey Miller, No. 12 Toyota: "We had a great run going. I just happened to hit the fence and it blew that loose sheet metal right off..."
Sixth-place, Matt Crafton, No. 88 Chevrolet: "Something happened up there and they gave me enough room and I just buried it on the outside. I went to the outside and it stuck..."
Seventh-place, Dennis Setzer, No. 85 Chevrolet: "We came out of here with a decent run. A lot of guys had a pretty good truck but couldn't make it back up through the field. Track position is key here in Mansfield..."
We also met up with Brendan Gaughan (17th), Terry Cook (22nd), and Marcos Ambrose (23rd). Again, click on each driver's name to listen.
We're Wrapping it Up

What a weekend here at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway! There were challenges all the way around, but once again the race is over and another short track Truck Series battle is in the history books. We have a total of 36 interviews from throughout the weekend in Mansfield for your listening pleasure, and over 300 images in our TruckShots! gallery alone. Throw in the High Sierra gallery and the Rhonda Greer gallery and we should have every possible angle of the City of Mansfield 250 covered.
We're going to call it a day from MMS...congrats to Ron Hornaday and KHI for their first victory of 2006, and a big thanks to the staff here at MMS. We will pick up coverage next Thursday from Dover International Speedway as we bring you practice and qualifying updates for the AAA Insurance 200. Then on Friday, we will have complete pre- and post-race coverage from Round 8 of the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season. Until then, so long everybody!
