Good Morning from Charlotte
05-18-2006 11:28 am
Good morning from Lowe's Motor Speedway as we are inching closer to the start of an eight-hour open test session for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series leading up to tomorrow's Quaker Steak and Lube 200. The teams will be busy working on setups for the new asphalt here in Charlotte and the several other similar 1.5-mile superspeedways we will be visiting throughout the 2006 season. We will have complete coverage of today's testing and we'll preview tomorrow's race all day here at TruckSeries.com, so keep it locked on to TrackSideLive! for all the news here from the track.
We Were Green...for a While
05-18-2006 11:39 am
We were green for a while and a few trucks took the liberty to make a few laps, that is until Mark Martin got up out of the groove in turn three and four and brushed the wall with the No. 6 Ford. We'll make a lap through the garage and get some pictures of all the trucks and check the damage to Martin's ride shortly.
Cut Tire Sends Martin Into Wall
05-18-2006 12:01 pm
Mark Martin did indeed make some hard contact with the turn three wall on his first hot lap this morning when he cut down the right front tire. The truck was heavily damaged on the right front, and the team was merely inspecting the damage rather than trying to make repairs. Several drivers and crew chiefs came over to inspect the right front tire off the truck, including Dave Fuge, Todd Bodine, Erik Darnell, and Timothy Peters to name a few.
Weather Not an Issue Today
05-18-2006 12:14 am
Weather today here at LMS should not be an issue as the sun is shining down brightly on the track and temperatures are expected to reach the mid 70s. Tomorrow is supposed to be a carbon copy - minus the slight chance of showers we have for this afternoon - with high temps expected to reach into the upper 70s to low 80s.
Track Records in Jeopardy
05-18-2006 12:15 am
With the new asphalt here in Charlotte, the one-lap qualifying record is in jeopardy when we roll for the pole tomorrow afternoon. Currently Mike Skinner holds the one-lap track record at 29.500 seconds/183.051 miles per hour, set May 20,2005. The absolute track record for a stock car was set here last fall in qualifying for the Cup race when Elliott Sadler ran a 27.948 second/193.216 mph lap.
Rowdy Busch Back to Defend Title
05-18-2006 12:18 pm
Kyle Busch is back to defend his win in the Quaker Steak and Lube 200, driving a No. 51 Chevrolet out of the Billy Ballew Motorsports stables. Busch is a big fan of the movie Days of Thunder, and if the truck bears some resemblance to a car in the movie, it is no coincidence. He has even put the name "Rowdy Busch" on the roof in homage to his favorite character in the movie.
Skinner Spins Through the Grass off Four
05-18-2006 12:31 pm
Mike Skinner just took a slide off turn four and went for a ride through the grass on the front stretch. The truck apparently had no damage, and the incident stopped track activity for just a few moments. We're back to green now, and a full speed report will be posted shortly.

Kahne Turns Quick Lap for Crocker
05-18-2006 1:27 pm
One of the benefits to an open test day is you can try all kinds of wild stuff with your truck, including some pretty outrageous setups. When you're a rookie and part of a major organization with strong Cup Series ties, it means you have the time to put in a a veteran driver and really see what your equipment can do.
Kasey Kahne just hopped out of the No. 98 Cheerios Dodge after setting the second quickest lap of the day. Kahne's 174.853 mph lap is just off the top speed of the day turned by Aric Almirola at 175.633 mph.

A Little Rain Between Sessions
05-18-2006 2:50 pm
We just had a brief shower pass over the track which has dampened everything and will likely delay the start of the second session beyond its scheduled 3:30 pm ET start time. We'll update the revised schedule if and when we hear it from LMS and NASCAR officials.

Session Two Underway
05-18-2006 3:40 pm
The second session of the day just went green moments ago, and the teams are slowly making their way out onto the speedway for the final four hours of testing before tomorrow's Quaker Steak and Lube 200. Mike Bliss leads Mike Skinner, Kyle Busch, Dennis Setzer and Ron Hornaday in the early moments as less than 20 trucks have been on the track. We'll have all the news and notes from the second session, as well as more pictures and some audio, so keep it locked here to TrackSideLive!
Race Setups Being Tested
05-18-2006 3:50 pm
While much of the first session was spent on qualifying setups and single truck runs, there are drivers testing out their setups in traffic now. There were a couple of big packs on the track before the red flag came out for a quick spin with no contact by Sean Murphy. We should be back to green shortly, Murphy is heading back to the garage, albeit with four flat tires.
Gear Lube on Track?
05-18-2006 3:53 pm
There is some speculation that one of the drivers may have dumped some rear end grease on the speedway, perhaps contributing to the spin by Sean Murphy just moments ago. A couple of teams have reported a significant amount of fluid on their windshields, but as yet there has been no confirmation from where that grease may have come from.

Busch in Wall
05-18-2006 3:59 pm
Kyle Busch has found problems here as he blew a left front tire and crashed hard, damaging the primary No. 51 Chevrolet. Other drivers report seeing the tread come off the tire entering turns one and two, sending him into the wall. We will follow up with more info as soon as it is available. UPDATE: Busch has been seen at the infield care center and released. He is already back at the team's garage area and helping Richie Wauters and crew prepare the backup truck.
Back to Green, then Red, Now Green
05-18-2006 4:13 pm
We went green after the Busch incident for about 60 seconds, and the red came back out for a solo spin off turn four by Sean Murphy. Murphy didn't make contact, and we're already back to green flag action.
Spotters Report a Sprinkle
05-18-2006 4:29 pm
A couple of spotters are reporting a sprinkle of rain may again be moving into the area. As of now, there is no rain falling, the sun is shining, and we're still green on the speedway. If that changes, we'll let you know.

Kinser Up in Smoke and Flames
05-18-2006 4:53 pm
Kraig Kinser's engine sounded sour on the frontstretch, and by the time he hit turn one it erupted in smoke and flames sending him into a slide and bringing out the red yet again. A quick update to follow as soon as more info is available.

More Rain on the Way
05-18-2006 5:29 pm
A big, menacing, dark cloud is just about to move over the frontstretch grandstands and douse us all with a shower. As of now, it is still dry and trucks are still on track, but it is seemngly just a matter of minutes until the bottom drops out and we have some rain here at the speedway. There are still two and a half hours of scheduled practice time available, no word from LMS on if any of that time will be available after the scheduled 8:00 pm ET end of practice should we get some rain that delays the session.
Rain Stops the Action
05-18-2006 5:36 pm
Rain has brought us to a stop here at LMS. Jack Sprague still tops the charts with Mike Bliss, Mike Skinner, Aric Almirola, and Mark Martin the top five. We'll update the weather as we get added info, and we'll update the schedule as soon as we hear anything.
Rain Ends Optional Test at LMS
05-18-2006 6:36 pm
Persistent rain showers have forced NASCAR and Lowe's Motor Speedway officials to cancel the rest of this evening's scheduled test session for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The teams have started to load up their backup trucks, and get ready to rearrange themselves in the garage area after spreading out throughout both the NCTS and part of the Cup Series garage here at LMS today. We start bright and early tomorrow morning, and we will rejoin you at 8 am ET as we start official preparations for the Quaker Steak and Lube 200.
Until then, check out the Sights and Sounds box for exclusive TruckShots images and exclusive TrackSideLive! Audio. We have interviews with Todd Bodine, Terry Cook, Dennis Setzer, Mike Bliss, Erik Darnell, Johnny Benson, Kyle Busch, Erin Crocker, Kraig Kinser, and Sean Murphy, and there's well over 100 images for your viewing pleasure as well.
Until tomorrow morning, so long everybody!
Good Morning from LMS
05-19-2006 8:16 am
Good morning from Lowe's Motor Speedway! The showers that ended the open test session last evening have moved out of the area and we have arrived to bright sunny skies with not a cloud to be seen. It's cool this morning, with the current temp in the low 50s but we are expecting a high temperature around 78 to 80 degrees this afternoon. There is a chance we could get a stray shower again this evening, but the weathercasters all say we should be set for a wonderful day and night here in the Charlotte area. We're about an hour away from the first practice session for the Quaker Steak and Lube 200, so stick around as we inch closer to the start of on track action.

UPDATE: Darnell pushed up out of the groove coming out of turn four and lightly brushed the wall. There is damage to the right rear quarter, but the right front fender is still in tact.

Engine Problems Plague Starr
05-19-2006 1:45 pm
David Starr missed most of the practice this morning with engine problems in the No. 11 Toyota. He made just a half lap in the first session before he noticed a problem in the primary engine, and the backup engine expired and caught fire after just four laps in the second session. The team is finishing up their second engine change of the day and he should be ready for qualifying.
More Sights and Sounds on the Way
05-19-2006 1:54 pm
There are some more Sights and Sounds on the way! We met up with Timothy Peters and David Starr and talked about their rough mornings. Peters found the wall early in practice and has struggled to get back on the track in the backup truck, while Starr had engine problems in both sessions this morning. Both drivers took some time to talk to us about their frustrations this morning, but both remain positive that they can get it turned around come race time.
There are also a new batch of pictures headed up, with some sights from the garage as the teams prepare for qualifying - which comes your way at 4:15 pm ET.
Check the Sights and Sounds box for all of the images and audio from here in Charlotte, and check back later for much more after qualifying as we preview tonight's race.
AMW at LMS with MB Motorsports
05-19-2006 2:13 pm
America's Most Wanted, one of America's most popular reality crime prevention shows, will be here on site at LMS filming a segment with J.R. Patton and the MB Motorsports team this afternoon. The team is assisting AMW in the search for missing and exploited children, this week focusing on Asha Degree. Asha disappeared from her home in February 2000 and according to officials, Asha was seen asleep in her bed. But when her family woke up at 6:30 that morning, she was gone. Two witnessess told police they saw Asha walking along Highway 18 at 4 a.m. she disappeared. The segment is scheduled for broadcast on May 27.
AMW has helped captured 889 criminals, 17of which were on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. In addition, the show has found 50 missing persons.

Quaker Steak and Lube 200 Qual Fast Facts
05-19-2006 6:26 pm
Mike Skinner's pole here is his 25th career pole and his second consecutive here in Charlotte; Jack Sprague holds the career mark for poles with 27...Skinner now has won a pole in five seasons (1995, 1996, 2004, 2005 and 2006); his last pole was at Texas in November 2005...Skinner is the fifth different pole winner in 2006...Erin Crocker becomes the highest starting female driver in NCTS history; Tammy Jo Kirk previously held the mark with a third-place start in Portland in 1997...all four manufacturers, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, and Toyota, are represented among the top five starters tonight.
Correction on Crocker
05-19-2006 7:29 pm
A slight correction on the qualifying feature we posted to the main page earlier...Erin Crocker's runner-up performance in qualifying is the best start ever for a female driver in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, but not the best ever performance for a female in a nationally touring NASCAR series. Shawna Robinson won the pole for a Busch Series race at Atlanta in 1993, and Patty Moise qualified second for the Busch Series race at Road Atlanta in 1986.
Lester Disappointed with DNQ
05-19-2006 7:33 pm
Bill Lester spun coming to the green on his qualifying run and did not register a speed as a result. Since his No. 22 Toyota is outside the top 30 in NCTS owner point standings, Lester will be forced to watch tonight's race from the sidelines. The DNQ breaks a streak of 102 consecutive NCTS starts.
"It can only get better from here," Lester said. "I just wish we were on a tire that we could race on."
Start Time...
05-19-2006 7:36 pm
We are less than an hour away from the scheduled start time of the Quaker Steak and Lube 200, but we are just one car deep in qualifying for the Cup Series All-Star race. A best case scenario has this done by 8:30, in which case we will move into hurry up mode and get the NCTS race started as quickly as possible afterward.
Track Conditions a Concern
05-19-2006 7:37 pm
The repaving job at LMS has received universal praise by competitors in all three NASCAR divisions that race here. However, with the harder tire compound, there is some worry in the garage about the condition of the asphalt as we get ready to race. There were numerous incidents in Cup Series and Truck Series practice this morning and early afternoon, and several more incidents in qualifying for both series as well. Drivers have expressed some concern about the track conditions once we get in race mode tonight. Temperatures will drop and the track will tighten up, and no one has tested a Truck here under nighttime conditions.
Cup Qualifying Over; Trucks Up Next!
05-19-2006 8:27 pm
The Cup Series qualifying for the All-Star race has just concluded, and the NCTS teams are quickly moving their equipment to pit road. We are a couple minutes behind schedule, but NASCAR will do their best to get the race started as close to on time as possible.

05-19-2006 8:49 pm
10. Lap 10 - Bliss takes his truck to the garage with a right front suspension problem. Restart. Skinner leads as Hornaday again gets the jump on Crocker, who is falling back through the pack. Sprague gets out of the pits late and falls a lap down to the leader.
9. Lap 7 - Skinner leads Crocker, Hornaday, Benson, Crawford, Cook, Reutimann, Setzer, Martin, Musgrave, Busch, Almirola, Crafton, Earnhardt, Gaughan, Reid, Kinser, Chapman, McCumbee, East, Murphy, Krisiloff, Miller, Bliss, Hamilton, Sutton, Park, Starr, Darnell, Bodine, Peters, Lagasse, Sprague, Long, Ragan, and Ambrose.
8. Lap 6 - Replays show that Bliss also was involved, catching the wall exiting turn four trying to get around the spinning Sprague.
7. Lap 5 - Ambrose was pushed into the outside line and he lost grip, slamming into the turn four wall. Sprague spun to avoid. Sprague drove away but the right rear tire blew going into one and he spun again, doing some damage to the right rear quarter panel.
6. Lap 2 - Cook looks under Ambrose for sixth as Earnhardt almost gets into the wall off turn four. Crocker takes second from Hornaday to complete lap 3.
5. Green flag. Hornaday dips under Crocker to take second as Skinner leads off the backstretch. Benson sneaks to fourth with Ambrose fifth.
4. Trouble spots tonight will be turns two and four. All the incidents in NCTS action here today have been in turn four, while turn two caught out many of the Cup competitors this afternoon. One to go before we drop the green flag. 134 laps/201 miles to go.
3. David Starr and Kyle Krisiloff will both drop to the back. Starr due to engine changes, and Krisiloff due to adjustments to his truck during the impound.
2. Trucks are rolling. There are three pace laps prior to the green flag. No reports yet from NASCAR on drivers that will be dropping to the back of the field at the start, but that is likely to change with all of the incidents in qualifying.
1. Driver introductions are complete, and pre-race ceremonies are about to come to a close. We should be ready to fire engines shortly.
