It's amazing how much one word can change your life. When you hear it, feel it, bear it, and breathe it that one word changes your entire view on the way you see every single aspect of your life. I will never be the same person I was before I found out I had cancer. I am now a better person for what I have endured just as all the millions of people in our country who feel the same way after battling cancer. It has literally changed my life. I was this guy who was a rough neck, red neck person that raised myself in the most unbelievable conditions and at times thought of myself as indestructible to getting my legs knocked out from under me in the blink of an eye and having it done time and time again battling this terrible disease. My whole life has been a bit of turmoil. I've been pretty proud to do what I've done because I'm a survivor. I was out on the street at 13-14 years old. Ended up doing what I did and got a chance to race with the best race car drivers in the best racing in the world. (Team PR Photo)

Ron Hornaday knows a thing or two about Martinsville Speedway and that certainly should give the veteran driver at least a slight edge when the NASCAR Busch Series rolls into town for the Goody’s 250 on July 22. When the 48-year-old Hornaday first raced at Martinsville in 1994, many of today’s Busch Series regulars were still playing with toy cars in a sandbox.

The thrill of spotting NASCAR races at places like Daytona, Charlotte and Talladega is one thing. Going back to Wisconsin to spot Rich Bickle in the 27th-Annual Miller Lite Nationals at Slinger Superspeedway this Tuesday, July 18th will be yet another. Slinger is an old haunt for this writer - a place where I watched races for years, covered them as a news reporter and later as the track’s public relations director.

Rick Crawford (No. 14 Circle Bar Truck Corral Ford) struggled through a miserable season in 2005 finishing a disappointing 16th after challenging for the series title as recently as 2002; he finished second to Mike Bliss (No. 16 Xpress Motorsports Chevrolet). Like Hornaday, Crawford credits symmetry between driver, crew and his manufacturer's engineers. "We needed to fix what was wrong with ourselves," said Crawford, who with Sprague shares the series' career start record of 236. "(Owner) Tom Mitchell has given us the green light to do what it takes. So it doesn't surprise me that we're doing so well." Crawford also believes Bodine and others ahead of him in the standings can be overhauled. "I really do and we're going to give it our best performance," he said. "I look forward to it. It's fun racing again. Last year's gone." (High Sierra Photo)

"In March, when I became the first black driver in twenty years to race in the Nextel Cup series it was a watershed event for NASCAR, and one that was amplified due to the focus on diversity efforts over the past few years," said Lester. I never had so much fun finishing 16th. Tuesday's Miller Lite Nationals didn't produce the on-track results that driver Rich Bickle and I had hoped for, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Bickle was his usual killer self of the quarter-mile, high-banked Slinger Superspeedway oval driving our car right to the front only to have a mechanical failure put us out of the race with just under 50 laps to go. Normally, I might have been disappointed at coming so close so spotting Bickle's fourth and my second Nationals title, but it was hard to feel badly about anything on return trip to my old Wisconsin stomping grounds. For Brendan Gaughan (No. 77 Orleans Dodge) 2003 was a banner year - six wins and a fourth-place finish in championship standings (he finished 40 points behind champion Travis Kvapil) after leading the point standings for much of the second-half of the season - but it was also a trying year. Leading the points heading into the final race of the season, Gaughan was poised to win his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series title. A mid-race incident dashed those title hopes. Fast forward to this season where Gaughan has mostly struggled. After his Orleans Racing team decided to scale back to a one truck team this year, Gaughan has been the top finishing Dodge in several races, but that hasn't always meant a top-10 finish. By Gaughan's own admission, trying to regain his near-championship form has been tough. "It is frustrating, but at the same time it's what you for," said Gaughan, whose team owner is his father Michael. (High Sierra Photo)
