Key Motorsports announced that the team has signed driver Chad Chaffin to pilot the No. 40 Key Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado in the first four races on the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Series schedule. Chaffin's first race in the No. 40 Chevy will be the Daytona 250 at Daytona International Speedway on February 17. Dave Despain will once again climb into the host’s chair for SPEED’s popular Monday night program Inside Nextel Cup, beginning Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. ET. Joining Despain, will be veteran drivers Michael Waltrip and Kenny Schrader, both in new rides for 2006.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series owner Dave Malcomson announced today that rookie driver Chad McCumbee will pilot his MRD Motorsports No. 06 Chevrolet Silverado in an effort to capture the 2006 NCTS Rookie of the Year Award. NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler will fill the fourth seat on SPEED’s popular Friday night show Trackside with Steve Byrnes, Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Hammond and Larry McReynolds. Waltrip will continue to handle the first-half duties, with Sadler taking over for DW on July 7 at Chicagoland Speedway.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team, Green Light Racing, today announced that their rookie driver, Sean Murphy, will be manning the No. 07 Chevy Silverado Truck for the racing organization. One veteran race team with close to 20 years of stock car experience, another with an owner who has been driving race cars for more than 20 years, and a third totally new team will all be running the Toyota Camry in the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series.

If you want to become a new team owner in NASCAR and have an unlimited budget, you can guarantee yourself a starting position in the first four or five races of the season. That guarantee usually becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you make the first five races, you gain points on the teams that did not. Therefore, you are almost assured your team will stay locked into a guaranteed starting position all season long. My question to you is, "Do you think that is right?" If you ask me that same question, my answer would be a resounding NO! Years ago, the starting line up for a NASCAR race was set by straight-up qualifying. If there were 43 starting positions available, the 43 fastest cars made the show. The slower cars from 44th and back packed up and went home. A $3 million resurfacing project underway at Lowe's Motor Speedway will include work in the turns of the 1.5-mile oval that officials say will give the 46-year-old track an "attitude adjustment." Work started Jan. 16 and will be completed prior to the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge on Saturday night, May 20, and the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday evening, May 28.

Toyota won't be competing in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series until 2007, but fans will not have to wait until then to see a Toyota leading the field of 43 stock cars in a NASCAR race. Only three more original episodes of “Driver X” remain before the winner is revealed on February 6. The show airs Mondays at 7 p.m. EST on Discovery Channel. All of the action now takes place in Darlington. Jack Roush and his team of judges reviewed more than 1,700 applications and narrowed them down to a list of 25 drivers from across the United States, Canada and New Zealand in search of the best drivers to take part in this exclusive competition.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series star Matt Crafton returned to his roots and claimed the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series portion of the the 29th Copper World Classic at Phoenix Int'l Raceway. The 2006 Drive for Diversity driver roster was announced today by NASCAR Director of Diversity Tish Sheets. The program, which is managed by Access Marketing & Communications, will give eight ethnic and gender diverse drivers the opportunity to compete in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series. The drivers were chosen from a pool of over 300 applicants.

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) today announced that a special unleaded fuel has been developed and will be used by the start of the 2008 season as a result of its partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its fuel supplier, Sunoco. “We’ve been back and forth to the drawing board for several years to find an unleaded fuel that is compatible with NASCAR engines,” said Gary Nelson, NASCAR’s vice president of research and development.

Nascar will use unleaded fuel for its racecars and trucks beginning in 2008, making the switch from the high-octane leaded fuel that it has used for decades.

Toyota will move into Nascar's Nextel Cup and Busch Series beginning in 2007, becoming the first foreign manufacturer to compete in the top racing series since Jaguar in the 1950's. The announcement is expected Monday in a news conference at Nascar in Concord, N.C., according to a person with knowledge of the announcement who was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it. Toyota will join the American brands Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge in the top two levels of competition.

The Orleans Racing team headed to last week's Daytona test with a punch list of tests to be performed, and at the end of the three-day session most items had a check mark next to them. The three-day test at the self proclaimed "World Center of Racing" gave crew chief, Tony "Rambo" Liberati plenty of data to draw from. The goal is to incorporate all of the "good" and be ready for the February 17th Dodge Dealers 200 Craftsman Truck Series event. The test was a good workout for the Orleans Racing team giving the road crew plenty of opportunity to gel for the 2006 season. The going is slow and arduous, but at the end of the session Rambo had the #77 Dodge running competitive laps. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) announced today the establishment of the NASCAR Foundation, a 501 © (3) non-profit entity that will serve as the liaison between the sport and all of the charitable causes supported by its different constituents. The Foundation will review charity requests on a regular basis and over time, will expand its focus beyond the industry-related charities that NASCAR currently supports.

It was a very successful weekend for the Germain Racing Team, as both Germain Racing Toyota Tundra Teams got themselves ready for the upcoming NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season opener in February. The Germain Racing Tundra's were very strong during the three day test at the 2.5 -mile tri-oval of Daytona International Speedway. Bill Davis, president of Bill Davis Racing, confirmed Monday the driver and crew chief combinations of his three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series entries for the 2006 season. Bobby Hamilton earned two previous Daytona 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victories at historic Daytona International Speedway as an owner with drivers Joe Ruttman and Robert Pressley. In last year’s Daytona 250, he finally got the win for himself but he had to wait a few minutes on pit road to celebrate. Hamilton, who started last on the starting grid, was battling side-by-side with Jimmy Spencer on the final lap of the race when the last caution came out.

It's usual to that a driver loses his ride a few weeks after collecting a series championship but that's exactly what happen to 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Ted Musgrave. Musgrave lost his job last week when Ultra Motorsports closed its doors after failing to secure sponsorship. But the Wisconsin native has quickly landed on his feet at Germain Racing driving the No. 9 Toyota Tundra and is looking to defend his championship in 2006.

Jon Wood has spent the past three days testing a Wood Brothers/JTG Racing F-150 at Daytona. Wood only plans to enter the first three truck series races this season (Daytona, California and Atlanta). The final day of the three-day Preseason Thunder test sessions for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series has come to a conclusion, and the teams now head for home with the opening race of the 2006 season now just weeks away. With as many as 13 rookies on the grounds, NASCAR officials wisely allowed the teams to work in the draft on each of the three days allowing the newcomers to get as much experience as possible before they come back for real for the start of official practice for the Florida Dodge Dealers 250 on February 15. There were two different approaches evident during the three-day session, one of which saw teams locked into the field by NASCAR's qualifying procedure concentrate on race setups in the draft. The other saw the dozen teams at the track trying to make the field for the race based on their qualifying speed work intensely on single-truck runs trying to find as much speed as possible in qualifying trim. Former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Mike Skinner (No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota) has noticed several changes since his return to the series and not just all of the former NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers who are currently making a home for themselves in the series. “It used to be drivers would use the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series as a stepping stone to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series; now it seems like it’s reversed.”

Fords continue to dominate testing results …
Rookie Erik Darnell (No. 99 Roush Racing Ford) topped the morning’s single-truck speed charts with a lap of 178.951 mph as temperatures plummeted more than 20 degrees from Friday and drivers battled stiff winds. Jon Wood (No. 20 Wood Brothers-JTG Ford) was second-fastest at 178.696 while Darnell’s teammate, David Ragan (No. 6 Roush Racing Ford) stood third at 178.377.

After the first day of test runs during Preseason Thunder at Daytona International Speedway, Matt Crafton lead the field atop the speed charts after the afternoon drafting sessions in the ThorSport Racing No. 88 Menards Chevrolet. Crafton turned a quick lap of 48.721 seconds/184.725 miles per hour to lead the field through the first afternoon's drafting period. "Drafting speeds don't mean much because you're at the mercy of everyone in the same pack as you," Crafton said.

We had a water line get cut by the oil pump belt, so we've only made three laps and we are pretty happy with what we've seen so far. The foundation for the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be poured this week with three days of testing for the Jan. 17 Daytona 250 at Daytona International Speedway. Teams intending to participate in this season's first of 25 races are scheduled to test from Friday, Jan. 13 through Sunday, Jan. 15. The seasoned veteran was told last Friday that Ultra Motorsports owner, Jim Smith had decided to close the doors after 11 seasons in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Just days after losing the ride in which he won the 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship, it appears Ted Musgrave is close to making an announcement regarding his return to the series in 2006. TruckSeries.com has learned Musgrave has been in negotiations, and he and the team expect to have an announcement shortly. Sources have indicated any announcement will likely be made before the teams arrive en masse in Daytona for Preseason Thunder Testing this weekend in preparation for the season opener on February 17. After 267 races spread over 11 years, Ultra Motorsports' run in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series has come to an end. Jim Smith clinched his first ever series championship, and he has decided to go out on top. As of Friday, the doors have been closed on his race shop. Ultra - one of two teams in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to have participated in each series race dating back to the series inception in February 1995 - leaves the series as the reigning champions and goes out as the series' all-time leading winner with 37 victories. While Smith, who is out of the country and unavailable for comment, leaves the series on a high note, reigning series champion Ted Musgrave is scrambling to line up a ride at the last minute. Now that nearly 30 teams are locked into the field based upon 2005 owner points, and combined with the impound procedure that doesn't allow teams to make adjustments to the trucks after qualifying, teams in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will spend much of their two-day test at the World Center of Speed looking for that perfect race setup. In years past, not only would teams have the two-day pre-season test, but they would have much of the week leading up to the race to fine tune their qualifying and their race setups. NASCAR announced Thursday that three cities - Atlanta, Charlotte and Daytona Beach - are still under consideration for serving as the host site for the sport's first-ever officially-sanctioned Hall of Fame. Dual V8 Supercar champion Marcos Ambrose will ease into the Craftsman Truck Series in the US this year and may have to sit out the first three rounds. Due to ultra-strict guidelines in the high-speed races, rookie drivers - even those with Ambrose's experience - need to prove their ability. The series opens at Daytona on February 16 but Ambrose said he may be forced to wait until round four at Martinsville, Virginia on April 1 before his debut with the Wood Brothers team due to license restrictions. "It's very high speed and NASCAR has very strict criteria on which they let start those races," Ambrose said on Thursday.

Taylor, a Texas native, attended the University of Texas at Arlington, and served as a US Army intelligence analyst from 1992-98.
