It didn’t seem as if it was going to be a gamble to place an experienced driver with Billy Ballew Motorsports, as much of their success has come from those with lots of laps under their belts. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series veteran Jeremy Mayfield jumped behind the wheel of the No. 15 Convoy of Hope/Craig Morgan Chevrolet for his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start this past Saturday night at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

With one win and one pole already to his credit at the old Las Vegas Motor Speedway, David Starr was looking forward to scoring similar results on the newly configured race track with his Red Horse Racing team. But Starr would have his work cut out for him behind the wheel of the No. 11 Toyotaforklift.net Toyota as he qualified 24th for the start of the race.

Rick Ren, crew chief for the No. 23 Toyota driven by Johnny Benson, has been fined $1,000 for violating Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (truck, truck parts, components and/or equipment that do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20B-16.3D (unapproved fuel cell filler panels installed to create space).

Rookie sensation Chase Miller proved once again age is not an issue when it comes to his experience level on a track he had not laid eyes on before the race. The entire Las Vegas weekend started off in the right direction when 19-year-old Miller posted the fastest time in Friday's test session and second fastest time for Saturday morning's practice session. A promising evening for rookie Chad McCumbee and his No. 08 Green Light Racing team quickly went up in smoke at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday night. "We had a pretty good truck and I feel we were in a position for a solid top ten finish, this is part of racing and you just have to pick up and be that much more prepaired for the next race," said McCumbee.

Jack Sprague had always been a perennial favorite at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In eight NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at the track, the three-time Series champion had scored two wins and seven top-10 finishes. ‘Lady Luck’ had always smiled on Sprague at the Las Vegas track.

Last week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, nearly the whole field (32 of 36 starters) bettered Mike Skinner's two-year old track qualifying record (165.320 mph) on the 12-degree banking in 2004. Skinner, driver of the No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota, set a new record of 178.065 mph as he became the first driver to win three consecutive poles at two different tracks. (Ronda Greer Photo)

Drivers from the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series were introduced to Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s new high banks this weekend, and most can’t wait for a return engagement. “I really like it,” said Mike Skinner, who won Saturday night’s Smith’s Las Vegas 350. “I liked the old race track, but the new track is really fun to drive. I think we saw more racing grooves out there and it will only get better.”

|
|
Erik Darnell's race weekend at Las Vegas started on a high note, knowing he would head to the racetrack on level playing ground with the rest of the field. With the recent configuration of the speedway, no one would have an advantage and those who could adapt their setups to the new facility the quickest would be rewarded.

|
Peter Shepherd knew coming into Las Vegas that he needed to complete all the laps and bring the No. 6 Scotts Miracle-Gro Ford F-150 home in one piece. Shepherd did what he had to do, scoring an 18th place finish at the newly configured speedway.
|
|
|
Michel Jourdain Jr. headed to the newly refinished Las Vegas Motor Speedway not quite knowing what to expect. The 1.5-mile track had the banking in the turns increased from 12 degrees to 20 degrees and the front and back stretch were now banked nine degrees.

Boston Reid and the No. 25 Woodard Racing Dodge crew finished 33rd at the new Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) on Saturday night. A promising run was cut short by a broken oil pump belt. “It’s disappointing because we had a truck that could have finished in the top-15 and to finish 33rd kind of stings. We were really good by ourselves, but in traffic I would pick up a terrible aero push."

Saturday night, under the lights, on the newly redesigned Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Todd Bodine rolled to the green flag in eighth place and took the checkered flag for the Smith’s Las Vegas 350 in twelfth.

With a successful test of both trucks on Friday, the Circle Bar Truck Corral Team entered race day looking for a solid performance in the Smith’s 350 and an eye on improving their standing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. During the day long NASCAR test on Friday, CB-20 slightly out performed CB-18 during eight hours of testing at the newly configured Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Mike Skinner and the No. 5 Toyota Tundra team headed to “Sin City” to race at the newly-configured Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday night. The team turned the momentum from its second-place finish last week at New Hampshire International Speedway into a victory in Vegas. The No. 5 Toyota Tundra team made winning look easy with a dominating performance.

Bill Lester and the No. 22 Bill Davis Racing team started the Smith’s Las Vegas 350 at the newly-improved Las Vegas Motor Speedway from the 26th spot. Despite qualifying deep in the field, the team believed the truck was capable of a top-15 finish.

Mike Skinner had earned three consecutive poles in the desert, but going into tonight's Smith's Las Vegas 350 the victory trophy managed to elude him. After dominating the race - leading for 114 of the race's 146 laps - Skinner not only takes home the trophy but made the statement that he and the No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota will be a force to be reckoned with throughout the remainder of the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season.
Skinner defeated defending series champion Ted Musgrave in a surprisingly clean and competitive race on the newly reconfigured 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway tri-oval. Musgrave made a strong move on a late-race restart, going past Skinner on the outside to take the lead. But not to be denied, Skinner repaid the favor on the final restart of the night to reclaim the lead and motor on to his 19th career series victory.
Mike Bliss finished third in the No. 16 XPress Motorsports Chevrolet. Bliss expressed his surprise that the racing was as good as it was on the new surface. Johnny Benson finished fourth in the No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota, a strong finish despite the fact he fought transmission problems following his first pit stop of the evening.
Ron Hornaday rounded out the top five, with David Reutimann sixth, Marcos Ambrose seventh, Dennis Setzer eighth, Kraig Kinser ninth, and Aric Almirola rounded out the top ten.

Call it bad karma or whatever but Mike Skinner, until Saturday night, had done virtually everything this year in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series except visit Victory Lane. Skinner led the series in Budweiser Poles won and laps and miles led but still couldn't quite find his 19th career victory. The sixth time in 2006 that Skinner's Toyota Tundra Toyota started from the No. 1 qualifying position, however, turned out to be the charm as Skinner dominated the Smith's Las Vegas 350 at newly reconfigured Las Vegas Motor Speedway and became the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series' 10th winner of the season. Skinner, who hadn't won in more than a year and 25 races, led four times for 114 of the race's 146 laps but had to come from behind following the race's seventh caution. (David M. Vaughn Photo)

David Reutimann collected his 14th top-10 finish of the season as his No. 17 Team Tundra NASCAR Craftsman Truck crossed the finish line in sixth-place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday night. “We were able to run in the top-five and we ended up finishing sixth,” Reutimann said. “The truck was a little tight from the center off at the start."

Mike Skinner, driver of the No. 5 Bill Davis Racing Tundra, dominated Saturday evening's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to register his first victory of the season. Skinner, who started from the pole position, led 114 of 146 laps to record his third Craftsman Truck Series win in a Tundra, as well as the 19th NCTS win of his career. The Daytona Beach, Fla.-driver passed fellow Tundra pilot Ted Musgrave on lap 125 and led the final 20 circuits on his way to the victory. When Skinner crossed the finish line, it was Toyota's tenth win of the season, one more win than the nine Toyota recorded a year ago, and was Toyota's 22nd win since joining the Craftsman Truck Series at the beginning of the 2004 season. "Tonight's results were pretty awesome," said Skinner, following the race. (David M. Vaughn Photo)

Build it and they will come, or so the cliche goes. And come they did, an estimated 65,000 strong, on Saturday night to see the debut of the reconfigured, 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway. If they were looking for speed, the fans got that in spades. Thirty-two of 36 qualifiers smashed the two-year-old qualifying record that Mike Skinner ultimately raised nearly 13 miles per hour, to 178.065. (High Sierra Photo)

Bobby Hamilton Jr. came to the land of lady luck looking for good fortune but rolled a pair of snake eyes. Hamilton Jr. was making a strong run to the front of the pack in his No. 18 Fastenal Dodge when a cut right front tire sent him careening into the outside retaining wall on lap 51 of the Smith’s 350 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

The Smith’s Las Vegas 250 may have been a home game for Brendan Gaughan but Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s recent reconfiguration all but erased any hope he may have had for a home field advantage. “It wasn’t a bad night,” Gaughan admitted. “Especially when you think back to the disappointment of last year when we finished 35th."

Ted Musgrave drove the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota to a second place finish in the Smith's Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race Saturday night at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Marcos Ambrose has earned the third top 10 finish of his rookie NASCAR season by finishing seventh in the Smith’s Las Vegas 350 in Nevada today. "When we got out front we were fast and we were wide open there. I got in clean air early and we were good, but I feel bad for the boys because we sped on pit lane there. We had kind of arm wrestle there with Todd Bodine trying to beat each other out of the last box. He was trying to beat me and I thought, 'I better get going to beat him,' and we both got caught for pit-lane speeding."

Mike Skinner held on for his 19th career NCTS win at the Smith's Las Vegas 350. This is his first NCTS win this season and Skinner's third NCTS win driving the No. 5 Bill Davis Racing Tundra. "The results tonight were pretty awesome. We had a really good truck. We quit practice early yesterday, and then we quit practice early again today because I wanted to save laps for the race."

Mike Skinner held back a late race charge by defending series champion Ted Musgrave to win the Smith's Las Vegas 350 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Skinner started from the pole and had one of the dominant trucks on the day, but found himself challenged by Hornaday, Ron Hornaday and Johnny Benson late in the race. Musgrave held on to second with former series champion Mike Bliss in third, Benson in fourth, and Hornaday fifth. Record speeds were set on the newly reconfigured speedway, but numerous cautions kept the average speed to just 117.817 miles per hour. Unofficiall Benson now trails 12th-place finisher Todd Bodine by 91 points in the battle for the series championship. TruckSeries.com will have a complete report to follow. (High Sierra Photo)

Mike Skinner earned his second consecutive NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Bud Pole in qualifying for tonight's Smith's Las Vegas 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Skinner turned a lap 2.3 seconds quicker than the previous track record on the newly remodeled and reconfigured 1.5-mile tri-oval to grab his 30th career pole and the sixth of the 2006 season. Skinner's lap of 30.326 seconds/178.085 miles per hour in the No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota eclipsed his previous record set in 2004 by over 12 miles per hour. That lap was 32.664 seconds/165.320 miles per hour. Bobby East will start outside the front row with his best career qualifying effort in the No. 21 Dreyer's Dibs/State Fair Corn Dogs Ford. East ran a 30.447 second/177.357 mile per hour lap to edge fellow rookie Chase Miller for the outside front row starting position. (Christina R/High Sierra Photo)

The Circle Bar team rolled to Vegas with a pair of trucks in the newly designed hauler that had never been raced, CB-18 & CB-20. CB-20 had been to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Goodyear tire test in August and had performed well. CB-20 was built as a clone to CB-19, better known as the Flying Monkey’s, earning CB-20 a temporary nickname of Monkette. The team will bestow a permanent and more fitting name to CB-20 after the truck has been race proven. Because both trucks have yet to take a green flag, the team planned a long day of testing to determine which truck would get the starting nod on Saturday for the Smith’s 350.

Defending series champion Ted Musgrave was involved in a crash on lap 90 of the New Hampshire 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at New Hampshire International Speedway, relegating him to a season-low 31st-place finish. The No. 9 Team ASE Toyota spun entering turn three, backing hard into the turn three wall. Musgrave limped his Toyota Tundra back to the garage and after a team assessment, decided to load it onto the trailer and call it a day.

Boston Reid is looking forward to this weekend’s event in Las Vegas. Mostly because it will be the first weekend in a long time that Reid feels like his team is on an even playing field with the other 35 drivers in the field. The 24-year old rookie from Logansport, IN has never raced at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but neither have the other drivers in Saturday’s field, with the recent construction done at LVMS.

"Las Vegas is always a fun place to go and race. The track is one of the best on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series circuit, and being in Las Vegas is always such an experience. All bets are off at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this week.. To put it another way, drivers and crew chiefs can leave any preconceptions about the 1.5-mile track at home before they arrive for Saturday's Smith's Las Vegas 350. LVMS hasn't changed locations, but the track itself has changed dramatically. No longer can it be called a semi-banked or "flat" oval. Banking in the turns has been increased from 12 to 20 degrees with walls raised approximately 15 feet to accommodate the changes. The backstretch, formerly banked three degrees, has been increased to nine degrees, the same as the frontstretch banking. Drivers and race fans won't recognize pit road, which has been moved 275 feet closer to the grandstands. The track surface itself is complete but some of the infield infrastructure remains a work in progress and won't be completed until the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series arrives for its March 11 event. "From what I have heard from my manufacturer teammate Todd Bodine, the track is very fast. From talking to Todd, it sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun to race on. There's apparently a distinct bump in turn one, which adds character to the track. I'm really excited to get out to Las Vegas and get on the new track. It's going to be an equal playing field for everyone."
