Good Morning from the Valley of the Sun

11-10-2005  10:14 am

Good morning from the Valley of the Sun! It is a beautiful fall morning with light clouds and a lot of sun, with a gentle breeze blowing from turn three towards turn one here at Phoenix International Raceway. Temperatures are expected to reach into the mid 80s today, although as the garage opened it was a very crisp and comfortable 62 degrees.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams are using pit road as their garage area today, and they are hard at work preparing for two one-hour practice sessions later on today. We'll bring you all the action from both sessions, so keep it locked on to TrackSideLive! as we prepare for tomorrow's Live! Bud Pole Qualifying and Round 24 of the 2005 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season, the Silverado 150.

Hines Out; Chaffin In

11-10-2005  11:09 am

Tracy Hines has split with the ThorSport Racing No. 13 Chevrolet and apparently Chad Chaffin will take the wheel here this weekend. Hines is joining the Glynn Motorsports team's Busch Series efforts in 2006, but as of now he doesn't have a ride lined up for this weekend or next weekend in Homestead.

PIR Track Facts

11-10-2005  11:16 am

Phoenix International Raceway is a one-mile flat D-shaped oval. The tri-oval section of the track is the backstretch. Turns one and two are shorter radius than the sweeping turns three and four. The banking in turns one and two is 11 degrees, while the banking in three and four is just 9 degrees. The backstretch dogleg is also banked at 9 degrees, with the frontstretch tilted at a near flat 3 degrees.

PIR Race Distances

11-10-2005  11:30 am

The race length at Phoenix International Raceway has been 150 miles since the 1999 race here, but the number of laps has varied greatly since the inaugural NCTS race fired off here in January 1995. The first ever NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race was a part of the Copper World Classic and was just 80 laps in length. The season ender in 1995 was 124 laps (200 kilometers). The 1996 season opener was 186 laps (300 kilometers), and the first 150 miler was held in 1997. The last 300km race here was the second race here in 1998.

PIR Races Summary

11-10-2005  11:36 am

Firsts and Lasts

11-10-2005  11:49 am

A couple of drivers and teams have scored notable firsts here at PIR, and some have scored notable lasts as well.

Ron Hornaday won his first Bud Pole Award here at PIR and Mike Skinner picked up his first win here, both in the first official NCTS race here during the Copper Classic in 1995. Jack Sprague picked up his first career NCTS win in April 1996, the first of three wins he's scored here at PIR. Bill Lester made his first career NCTS start here in April 2000, finishing 24th driving for Phil Bonifield. Ted Musgrave also made his first career start here in October 1995, finishing fourth in a truck out of the Roush Racing stables. David Starr's series debut was also here at PIR, coming in April 1998; he finished 25th on the afternoon. Bobby Hamilton Racing picked up it's first win as a team in 2000 when Joe Ruttman won from the pole.

A couple of notable lasts happened here as well. Greg Biffle's last NCTS win was here in 2001, as was Stacy Compton's last NCTS pole position, also in 2001. Biffle has 16 total NCTS wins, while Compton was a prolific qualifier with 9 total NCTS pole awards.

Starting Up Front Critical to Success at PIR

11-10-2005  12:02 pm

Many times drivers will say "well it's just a place to start" after qualifying in the middle or back of the pack. Only 2 of the 14 races run at PIR have been won from outside the top ten, and the other 12 have been won by drivers starting no worse than seventh.

Four races have been won from the pole, and two more from the outside front row starting position. Row two has seen three winners, with two drivers wiwnning from third position and one from fourth. The fifth starting position has produced two winners, and seventh starting position has given us one winner.

Mike Skinner's win in the inaugural NCTS race in 1995 was from 16th, while Greg Biffle came from 11th on the grid to win here in 2001.

PIR Manufacturer Wins

11-10-2005  12:07 pm

Chevrolet has dominated here at PIR with 10 wins. Ford has won three times, while a Dodge has made it to victory lane just once. Toyota has yet to crack the win column here, but has participated in just one race here (2004).

Sutton Crash Off 4 Brings Out Red

Sutton Crash Off 4 Brings Out Red

Kelly Sutton has spun and crashed coming off turn four to bring out the red flag. She has damage to the left front of the truck and has punctured the oil cooler, and left a long streak of oil around the track as she has come back to the pits. UPDATE: Sutton drove the truck back to the entrance to the garage area, inspected the damage and walked away.

Pre-Practice Audio Posted

11-10-2005  2:40 pm

We tracked down four drivers making their first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series attempts at Phoenix International Raceway before practice started, and got their thoughts on tackling one of the trickiest tracks on the NCTS schedule.  Willie Allen has never been on a track bigger than 5/8ths of a mile before this weekend, and while Brad Keselowski has been here numerous times, he's never been here before as a driver.  Bobby East nearly picked up an open wheel win here in January, but missed out by just a few feet after a last lap pass coming off turn four.  Erin Crocker also has some experience in open wheel cars here, but is making her first stock car attempt here this weekend.  Click on each driver's name to hear the interview...look to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page to the Sights and Sounds box.

Bubble Boys and Girls

11-10-2005  2:49 pm

We are still under red for the Sutton crash.  Here is how the bubble drivers look with just a couple minutes remaining in this session, if we are able to get it restarted:

7. Sprague, 128.434
10. Schrader, 128.251
19. Hobgood, 127.231
23. East, 126.507
24. Fedewa, 126.391
35. Sutton, 123.372

36. Edwards, 122.106
37. Wilson, 116.347

Still Red

11-10-2005  3:01 pm

NASCAR has been working hard for the last 30 minutes to clean up an extensive oil slick that went the entire distance of the track here in Phoenix.  They have just fired up the jet blowers and should have the track ready to go in a couple of minutes.

Track Open...Under Caution

11-10-2005  3:08 pm

NASCAR has just reopened the track but will keep the teams under caution for a couple of laps to make sure the drivers are okay with the cleanup job.  There are now 10 minutes remaining in this session.

Drivers Concerned...

11-10-2005  3:10 pm

Several drivers have reported a slick spot entering turn one.  NASCAR has kept them under caution while the drivers worked through that section of the track, but the lights just went off and we're back to green.

Prac 1 Over. Results Coming Soon

11-10-2005  3:24 pm

Look for results from the first practice posted shortly...not many changes from the last rundown as the drivers were still dealing with a slick track and were not able to better their times.

Hamilton led the session with Bodine second, Setzer third, Crawford fourth and Busch fifth.  Spencer was sixth, Sprague seventh, Crafton eighth, Cook ninth, and Schrader rounded out the top ten.

First Practice Audio Coming Your Way

11-10-2005  4:25 pm

We hooked up with five drivers after the first practice and got their thoughts on what's going on so far here today.  Mike Skinner's team has been working hard to find the source of a nagging vibration, and they're still hard at it as we close in on the start of the second practice.  Terry Cook is fast off the trailer, but he's looking for some more grip.  Jose Luis Ramirez is looking forward to his first Truck Series start here at Phoenix, and Chad Chaffin is just happy to be back after missing a few weeks.  Finally, we met up with Mile Track Jack and got his thoughts on racing here at night for the first time.  Look to the Sights and Sounds Box...

Final Practice Ready to Roll

11-10-2005  4:34 pm

The NCTS drivers are lining up on pit road, and the call has just gone out to send them on to the racetrack.  Kyle Busch, Joey Miller, and a dozen others are lined up and ready to rock and roll for the final hour.  We'll bring all the updates to you as it happens from PIR...

Busch Hits Fence to Bring Out Red

11-10-2005  4:36 pm

Kyle Busch apparently popped a right front tire coming out of turn four and smacked the wall with the right side of his machine to bring out the red flag.  Busch drove the truck back to the pits and crawled out uninjured.  The truck has sustained heavy right side damage.

Clean and Green

11-10-2005  5:16 pm

So far clean and green after the Busch accident slowed us in the early moments. We haven't had so much as a piece of debris on track to slow us since. There are about 18 minutes left in the session.

Sticker Runs Coming

11-10-2005  5:21 pm

The first of the mock qualifying runs are coming. Matt Crafton leapt to the front of the field with his mock run, and Brandon Whitt just leapfrogged Crafton into the top spot after his run. It should be busy at the top of the sheet from now until the end of practice as each team bolts on a fresh set of stickers for their mock runs.

Skinner to the back?

11-10-2005  5:29 pm

Mike Skinner's transmission change in practice could mean that the No. 5 will start the Silverado 150 from the back of the pack tomorrow evening.

More Post-Practice Audio

11-10-2005  6:31 pm

We tracked down several more drivers after the final practice to get their thoughts on the day, and in the case of one of them, his thoughts on his 2005 season.

Todd Bodine has been on fire since rejoining Germain Racing, scoring four second place finishes and three wins in the past 14 races. He talked to us about the highs and lows of 2005 and what's on tap for 2006. Deborah Renshaw spoke with us about how trying it can be to learn a racetrack without a lot of track time to be had, as did her teammate Chase Montgomery. Finally, we talked to Justin Hobgood, who after a couple of weeks worth of bad luck looks to have a solid chance at making the field here this weekend. Look to the Sights and Sounds box for all those clips - as well as several pictures of the aftermath of both Kelly Sutton and Kyle Busch's crashes from practice.

No One to the Back as of Yet

11-11-2005  11:31 am

NASCAR has reported that none of the drivers involved in incidents yesterday will be required to go to the back of the field as a result of going to backup trucks. Both Kelly Sutton and Kyle Busch were involved in crashes that damaged their primary trucks beyond repair and have gone to backup trucks.

"The rule states that a driver will go to the back of the field if they do not race the truck that has been presented for qualifying inspection," said NCTS communications director Owen Kearns. "Neither of the drivers involved in the crashes yesterday had presented the truck for qualifying inspection, so as of now they do not have to go to the back."

Another driver was looking like he might have to go to the back as a result of a transmission change. Mike Skinner had reported a serious driveline vibration and the team actually removed the transmission, but reinstalled the oringinal and as of now will not start tonight's race from the back.

Schrader Wins 15th at PIR; Crafton Second in NSWS

11-11-2005  11:44 am

Ken Schrader won yesterday's AZ Lottery 125 NASCAR Southwest Series race here at PIR. Schrader led from the pole and dominated the race on the way to his 15th career win in a variety of series here in Phoenix. Schrader picked up the lead on the final restart after pit stops put Matt Crafton in the lead. Crafton, the 2000 NSWS champion, raced hard with Schrader for the lead for a lap and a half before Schrader pulled ahead to win by half a straightaway. The race was stopped twice for incidents, including a fire on pit road that necessitated a 45-minute cleanup. No one was seriously injured in any of the incidents throughout the race.

How stout has Bill Davis Racing's fleet been in qualifying this season?

Mike Skinner has seven poles and four outside front row starts. Bill Lester has two poles and three outside front row starts. Now Johnny Benson has joined the party with his second front row start of the season by qualifying second here in Phoenix. Benson also started second at Texas in June.

BDR has 18 total front row starting positions, and has swept both front starting positions four times: Kansas (Lester on pole, Skinner second), Nashville (Skinner on pole, Lester second), Las Vegas (Skinner on pole, Lester second) and Texas (Skinner on pole, Lester second).

Qualifying Audio

11-11-2005  3:30 pm

We met up with pole sitter Brandon Whitt and asked him if he plans on repeating his performance from Memphis when he won his first career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory from the pole. Second-place starter Johnny Benson says he doesn't usually put a lot of weight on qualifying, but now that he's up front he'd like to stay there for 150 laps. Third-place starter Kyle Busch told us that they know what caused their problems yesterday in practice, and they don't expect any more problems like that today. look to the Sights and Sounds Box to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page. Also...we uploaded a big TruckShots gallery this morning, check it out!

More Qualifying Audio

11-11-2005  3:35 pm

We also met up with David Reutimann and discussed his chances of coming from the back of the pack to the front tonight. We also talked to last year's race winner David Starr and found out he is extremely confident even after he qualified towards the back of the pack. One driver never puts a premium on qualifying, but he finds himself near the front of the field here as we get ready for the green flag. Bobby Hamilton starts fourth, and he tells us he's happy to have that track position, but would be a little happier to be starting inside row two rather than in the outside lane. Again, look to the Sights and Sounds Box...

PIR Race Preview

11-11-2005  6:47 pm

The sun is setting in the western sky, there is a gentle breeze blowing across the speedway, and we are closing in on the start of the 24th race of the 2005 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season. The field is set and is incredibly close, and with just 150 laps to get it done tonight, look for intense competition throughout the field.

Pole sitter Brandon Whitt looks to repeat the performance he turned in at Memphis in July. There, he earned his first ever NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series pole and backed it up with a thrilling last lap pass of Ron Hornaday for the win. The Toyota brigade has been incredibly strong as we close out the season, and Whitt led the charge in qualifying as five Tundras took position among the top ten qualifiers.

Johnny Benson will roll off from second here tonight, his second front row start of the season. Benson has been close to victory here before, finishing second here in 1996. Should he add his name to the win list, he will become the 16th driver to pick up wins in the NASCAR Nextel Cup, Busch, and Craftsman Truck series.

Kyle Busch popped the fence in yesterday's practice, but hard work by Richie Wauters and the crew had him back on track within a matter of moments in yesterday's final practice. Busch has been stout in the NCTS this season, finishing each of his 9 starts but one among the top ten and winning three times. He should be a factor all night long here in Phoenix.

Ted Musgrave will go off fourth while his main rival in the championship Dennis Setzer will go from 18th. Musgrave has run well here in the past but is looking for that first victory here, and should it come tonight it will almost suredly put another nail in the coffin for Setzer's championship hopes. But anything can and usually does happen, and Setzer is far from out of this fight. While Setzer has stumbled the past couple of weeks, Musgrave's performances haven't been much better. If Musgrave cannot break into the top ten here and Setzer does, we will have an intense battle for the championship in the final race next Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

There are some notable newcomers in the field, including 2004 USAC National Midget champion Bobby East and NASCAR Dash Series standout Justin Hobgood. Both qualified extremely well and look to have trucks that will carry them to great finishes here this evening.

The sun is dropping quicker and quicker and the lights are starting to shine more and more on the Phoenix International Raceway. The crowd is trickling in as NASCAR Nextel Cup Series final practice is winding down, and the Silverado 150 is coming your way next!

Final Pre-race Audio

11-11-2005  7:01 pm

We've tracked down a total of 21 drivers prior to the start of the Silverado 150, the final couple of drivers being Bill Lester and Robert Pressley. We spoke to Lester about his runs here at Phoenix in the past and about his 2005 season in general. Not surprisingly, his high and low moments came at the same place, but you're going to have to listen to find out where it was and why.

Pressley has been good here at Phoenix in the past, and he told us what it takes to get around Phoenix quickly and what we should expect in the race here tonight.

Look to the Sights and Sounds Box for all of the interviews we've had here in Phoenix as well as all of the images we've taken the past couple of days.

Race Audio Coming!

11-11-2005  11:05 pm

We tracked down several of the major players in tonight's Silverado 150, including race winner Todd Bodine who told us all about his night and the excitement he dealt with as he had two hungry drivers knocking on his back door on the late race restarts. We also hooked up with second place finisher Ron Hornaday who told us just how hard he raced with Bodine in the late stages as well as third-place finisher Johnny Benson who nearly jacked Bodine into the wall as Bodine was struggling to get his truck in gear on one restart. We also spoke with point leader Ted Musgrave who has one race to go and he can lock up his first ever championship of any type in a touring series after nearly a quarter of a century behind the wheel.

Rick Crawford talked to us about the hard racing he and Benson were locked in late in the race, and David Reutimann spoke with us about his charge through the field. Matt Crafton explained to us how he made it to the end even though he faced the brunt of the storm back in the pack all day long on his way to a top-10 run and Todd Kluever told us about his first ever race here in Phoenix.

Keep an eye on the Sights and Sounds Box...

Why Didn't Whitt Lead Laps?

11-11-2005  11:32 pm

Brandon Whitt led the field across the line for three laps in the early stages of the race, but he was not credited with leading any laps here this evening. Whitt was under penalty by NASCAR for jumping the start, and thus was not credited with leading those laps even though he was at the front of the field. Whitt and his team were obviously frustrated at the situation, but did come to pit road to serve the drive through penalty under the first caution of the night.
