Good Morning from Martinsville
10-21-2005 7:42 am
Good morning from Martinsville Speedway! We crawled out of bed even before the earliest of the early birds and got here before the crack of dawn, and already the NCTS paddock was teeming with activity. It is gray and overcast now with a very slight, almost indetectible mist but we should be on target for an on-time start for practice which is scheduled for a 9 am ET start. The weatherman says we should have some sun with temperatures in the low 70s today once the sun burns off the lingering clouds. We'll be here to bring you all of the action throughout practice and of course we will have Live! Bud Pole Qualifying coming your way at 4:45 pm ET. Stay with us for all the action here on TrackSideLive!
Martinsville Track Facts
10-21-2005 7:50 am
Martinsville Speedway is one of six tracks under a mile in length on the 2005 NCTS schedule, and we are here for the seventh and final short track race of the season. The track is 0.526 miles in length, with two 800-foot straightaways connected by two very sharp, very flat corners. The corners, paved with concrete to withstand the beating of the 3400-pound race cars and trucks, are banked at just 12 degrees. The line around Martinsville Speedway is right on the bottom next to the curb that runs along the inside of the corners throughout, and if someone clips that curb through the corner it could throw his or her truck for a loop. The 200-lap race distance this weekend translates to just 105.2 miles, making it the shortest race on the 2005 NCTS schedule.
Martinsville Track Records
10-21-2005 7:56 am
Bobby Hamilton broke Mike Bliss's 1-lap track record here in the spring with a lap of 19.912 seconds/95.098 miles per hour.
The 200-lap race record is held by local favorite Jon Wood from nearby Stuart, Virginia. Wood won the race here in 2003 in one hour, 27 minutes, and 35 seconds at an average speed of 72.069 miles per hour.

End of season musical chairs starts early
10-21-2005 8:45 am
Three high-profile rides have seen the name over the driver's door change since we last raced in Las Vegas. Jack Sprague departed the No. 16 Chevy Trucks Chevrolet, and moved to the No. 60 Wyler Racing Toyota replacing Chad Chaffin. Chaffin has apparently lined up some Busch and Cup Series rides for the remainder of 2005 and is looking for a seat for 2006. Meanwhile, Steve Park departed the No. 62 Orleans Racing Dodge to pursue other opportunities for 2006, and he has been replaced, at least on an interim basis, by West coast hotshoe Scott Lynch.

Green is out at Martinsville; Practice underway
10-21-2005 9:01 am
The green flag just waved moments ago getting us underway for 2 hours and 15 minutes of NCTS practice.
Just seconds after the flag waved, NASCAR stopped the trucks on the track as two trucks lost their scoring transponders on the frontstretch. NASCAR officials retrieved them off the track and are looking for the trucks which lost them.
We'll have all the action for you as it happens from Martinsville!

Sprague's streak ends this weekend
10-21-2005 9:34 am
Jack Sprague ran 217 NCTS races wearing a red bow tie, but that streak will end here this weekend. For the first time in his career, Sprague will fire up for a NASCAR event strapped into a machine not wearing a General Motors nameplate. Now driving the No. 60 Wyler Racing Toyota, all of Sprague's previous starts in the NASCAR Nextel Cup, Busch, and Truck Series have been in a Chevrolet, Pontiac, or Oldsmobile. All of his NCTS races to this point have been with Chevrolet.
Peters back at Martinsville with extra confidence
10-21-2005 9:39 am
Timothy Peters made his first career NCTS start here in the spring. He returns for the second race at Martinsville with nearly a season's worth of Truck Racing experience, but that's not what has him pumped for this weekend's Kroger 200. Peters returned to his roots a couple of weeks ago and won one of the biggest Late Model Stock races of the season, which also happened to be sponsored by his sponsor. Peters took home the trophy in the Bailey's 300, beating out a stellar field that also included current NCTS point leader Dennis Setzer.

Clean and green, for the most part
10-21-2005 9:53 am
We've been hard at it for nearly an hour, and for the most part we've been clean and green. Just a couple of brief delays for debris slowed us, and both of those were within the first 10 minutes of the session. We still have about 75 minutes remaining in the one and only practice leading up to qualifying. Don't forget, as is now the norm in the NCTS, the trucks will be impounded following qualifying, so this is the only practice session the teams will have for both qualifying and the race.

Waltrip wearing out LF tire
10-21-2005 10:24 am
Darrell Waltrip's crew reports that he has "worn down the inside shoulder" of the left front tire. Many teams play with as much camber as they can get in order to get as much grip through the corners as they can get. When you play with camber like that, you can sometimes cause excessive wear on the inside of the tires because that is the part of the tire that is carrying all of the load down the long straightaways here.

Red Out; Oil on Track
10-21-2005 10:30 am
NASCAR has thrown the red flag as there is a line of fluid, suspected to be oil or some sort of grease, around the speedway. NASCAR is inspecting the surface and cleaning up what they find, and they are looking for the culprit to make sure once we go green the track stays clean.

Hamilton showing some smoke
10-21-2005 11:01 am
NASCAR spotters are keeping a close eye on defending series champion Bobby Hamilton as we wind down the 2 hour and 15 minute practice session. NASCAR race control has reported some smoke out of the No. 04 and has asked its eyes around the track to keep close watch as we close out the session.
Gaughan's struggles find him in the fence
10-21-2005 11:04 am
Brendan Gaughan has just smacked the turn one and two wall to bring out the red flag with just moments remaining in the one and only practice session. The truck has right side damage. We will head out to get an assessment of the damage and give you an update momentarily.
UPDATE: Gaughan's truck has heavy right side damage and the right front suspension has been knocked off. The radiator is also knocked out of the truck, and the crew is already working on logistics to get the backup truck unloaded. That will be a chore since the transporters are parked nearly a quarter of a mile up the hill in a gravel lot. We'll update this story as it develops throughout the day.

Some bent sheet metal in practice
10-21-2005 12:58 pm
Brendan Gaughan wasn't the only driver to ding up his ride during the morning practice session. Several teams had trucks that looked like they had just finished running 200 racing laps - with the battle scars to prove it - versus a leisurely two-hour practice.
Dennis Setzer's crew was busy repairing right side damage, from the door numbers on back to the right rear wheel. The crush panels had been knocked out, and the team was trying to smooth out the sheet metal the best they could before rolling through pre-qualifying inspection.
Johnny Benson, Chase Montgomery, and Chase Pistone were also sporting some scraped and bent sheet metal, but none of those wounds required major surgery by the teams.
Audio will be coming...eventually

Stick around for our exclusive TrackSideLive! audio clips. The track has been hot and with the cramped quarters here, there is no quiet place to find to speak with the stars of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series is on the track until 1:30 pm ET, and as soon as it's quiet we'll take the TruckSeries.com microphones up and down pit road and get with as many of the 38 drivers on the grounds as we can. As the saying goes, stay tuned!
Gaughan hard to spot
10-21-2005 3:12 pm
Brendan Gaughan has been sporting a long hair style all season long, but showed up here with his hair closely cropped. Just like when Mike Skinner trimmed the trademark moustache prior to Richmond, Gaughan has been hard to spot here at the track today.

McFarland in Schrader's truck in Atlanta?
10-21-2005 3:15 pm
Hearing from a couple of sources here at the track that Mark McFarland will be running Ken Schrader's No. 52 next week in Atlanta. McFarland, who will be driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s new Busch Series team in 2006, will apparently have a DEI engine under the hood for next week as well.
Bliss to wheel No. 16 at Atlanta and Texas
10-21-2005 3:18 pm
Xpress Motorsports has Martinsville spring winner Bobby Labonte in the No. 16 Chevy Trucks Chevrolet this weekend, and as we reported in our interview with crew chief Chris Showalter, Mike Bliss will take the reigns of the No. 16 for the next two races on the schedule in Atlanta and Texas. Bliss won the 2002 NCTS championship in the Xpress Motorsports ride, and had the dominant truck at California Speedway before running out of fuel late in the going while leading. Bliss tested with the team earlier in the week at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Weather update
10-21-2005 3:41 pm
It is still very overcast and gray here at Martinsville Speedway, but if there is any rain in the clouds above it hasn't found its way to the track yet. The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series is on the track now with their qualifying session, and we are still on target for a 4:45 pm ET start for Live! Bud Pole Qualifying. We'll keep you abreast of the weather if it takes a turn for the worse, but as of now it is not expected to.
DW's last ride?
10-21-2005 3:45 pm
Darrell Waltrip is slated to make his final NCTS appearance here in the Kroger 200 tomorrow. He has, however, hinted that he may make an attempt to race in the NASCAR Busch Series race here next season.
Waltrip has had success here at Martinsville in the NCTS, both as an owner and as a driver. Waltrip racked up a fifth-place run here in 1996, then going to victory lane in 1997 with Rich Bickle behind the wheel.

Post-qualifying audio
10-21-2005 6:04 pm
We tracked down the pole winner for the Kroger 200 Rick Crawford and got his thoughts on sitting on the pole and asked him about racing with one of the sport's legends for the final time. We also nabbed outside front row starter Kyle Busch, who admits he is not a big fan of Martinsville Speedway but says with a good finish tomorrow he could be. Third-place starter Tim Fedewa says it's always nice to have a fast truck, but not having a guaranteed spot in the field means that even a pole winning run leaves a driver with a little doubt in the back of his or her mind. Timothy Peters is the highest qualified rookie, and says he hopes to carry over the momentum from a big late model stock car win into a solid finish tomorrow. Brendan Gaughan had a smile on his face after a long rough day in Martinsville, and he hopes he's seen the worst of his luck for the weekend after crashing his primary truck beyond repair in practice. We also tracked down 2005 ARCA Re/MAX Series rookie of the year Joey Miller, who is lined up to take the wheel of DW's No. 12 Toyota starting at Atlanta, and asked him if he's paying extra special attention to the man behind the wheel of that truck here this weekend.
Look for the Sights and Sounds Box to the right side of the TrackSideLive! page for those audio clips, and we'll have much more for you when they let us back in the gates tomorrow morning.
Good night from Martinsville
10-21-2005 6:12 pm
They are sweeping us out of the infield here at Martinsville Speedway, so we're going to call it a night. We'll be back at it tomorrow morning to bring you all of the pre-race stats, driver interviews, pictures, and other news and notes from the media center leading up to the Kroger 200, the final short track race of the 2005 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season. Good morning from Martinsville Speedway
10-22-2005 8:37 am
Good morning from Martinsville Speedway! It is a very gray, overcast morning after an evening of scattered but heavy showers and even a few rumbles of thunder. There is a 30-percent chance of rain, but early morning radar scans showed very little green (rain) in the immediate area. Temperatures are expected to climb into the 60s and possibly even reach 70 today, and there may eventually be a few peeks of sunshine. We'll keep you abreast of the weather throughout the day, and of course we'll have all the news and notes leading up to today's green flag for the Kroger 200, expected to be about 1:25 pm ET. Thanks for logging on and keep your browser locked on to TrackSideLive!

The point spread between first place Dennis Setzer and second place Ted Musgrave is just five points, which matches the record for the closest battle in series history in 1998 when Jack Sprague and Ron Hornaday were fighting for the championship. Last year the point spread between first and second was 56 points.
First to fifth in the points this season is 284 points, while last year it was 271.
First to tenth in the points this season is 394 points, while last season it was 451.
Most laps led in a race
10-22-2005 9:13 am
Several drivers have set a career mark for leading the most laps in a single race so far in 2005.
Dennis Setzer led 177 laps on his way to victory at IRP and Todd Bodine led 114 laps at Las Vegas the last race out to set their career best mark for laps led in a single event. Earlier this season, Ricky Craven led 18 laps here at Martinsville to set his career best. Brandon Whitt paced the field for 54 laps en route to victory at Memphis, which are the only laps he's ever led in NCTS competition. David Starr also led 54 laps in a single event this year, turning that trick in Fontana in February.
Ted Musgrave led 158 of 160 laps on his way to victory at Gateway earlier in the season, but he did not set his personal best for laps led. His personal best is 201 laps in front just up the road at South Boston in 2001.
Average finish
10-22-2005 9:19 am
Here are the top-10 drivers ranked according to their average finish so far in 2005:
1. Musgrave, 8.9
2. Setzer, 9.7
3. Hornaday, 12.2
4. Spencer, 12.4
5. Crafton, 13.4
6. Hamilton, 13.5
7. Starr, 13.5
8. Skinner, 13.6
9. Bodine, 14.1
10. Reutimann, 14.6
Interesting that while he is the points leader, albeit by just five points, Dennis Setzer has the second best average finish while second-place point man Ted Musgrave has the best average finish to this point of the season.
Also of note is the incredible consistency of the ThorSport team and driver Matt Crafton, who have combined for the fifth best average finish in 2005.

Drivers meeting up next
10-22-2005 10:13 am
The NCTS drivers are going to be gathering under the Goodyear tent just beside the media center at 10:45 am ET, and we'll be there with the TruckSeries.com microphone and we'll get the pre-race thoughts from as many drivers as we can. Keep it locked to TrackSideLive! as we continue to count down to the start of the Kroger 200.
Setzer to the back?
10-22-2005 10:28 am
Morgan-Dollar team member Marty Houston reports that the power steering reservoir on the No. 46 Chevy was found to be cracked as the team went through their pre-race adjustments. Not wanting to force Dennis Setzer to run 200 laps here without power steering, the team has made the swap but due to NASCAR rules Setzer will be forced to drop to the back of the pack for the start. Remember, Setzer came from 33rd position to win here in 2002, so passing three more shouldn't be an issue.

33. The jet blowers are out blowing the oil dry out of the groove. There is a lot of dust all over the track, which is already very slick. Should make for an exciting 40 lap dash to the finish.
32. Lap 157 - Red flag is out as there is oil all over the speedway. Lester is taking a ride to the infield care center.
31. Lap 153 - Skinner goes behind the wall. Benson and Setzer get together which opens the for Labonte. The yellow comes out for oil in turns three and four just as Lynch, Lester, and Starr come together in turn four. Lester is the only driver that could not drive away.

Post-race audio comin' at ya!
10-22-2005 4:25 pm
Want to hear some post race thoughts of the drivers in today's Kroger 200? We just talked to Ricky Craven and he told us that picking up the win today has totally turned his season around after several weeks of frustration. Second place Todd Kluever told us that he might have used the bumper to nudge his Roush Racing teammate out of the way to take the win...if he could only catch up to him. Brandon Whitt looked like he could have challenged for his second win of the season, but he was tickled pink to pick up his second top-5 of the season. Willie Allen made an impressive debut to come home sixth, and he tells us that it took him a little while to adjust to running with some of the biggest names in NASCAR. Terry Cook picked up another top-10 finish, and he's ready to carry that momentum on to some of the mile and a half tracks where he and his team have been so strong this season. Timothy Peters got up front and led some laps today, and told us it was awful nice to be up front in front of his sponsors and friends and family. Tracy Hines went from 35th and a lap down to a very respectible 17th-place finish, and he told us how he was able to do it. David Starr was able to finish 21st, but he literally had his doors blown off after an incident on pit road and he tells us exactly how that happened. Finally, we caught up with Robert Pressley, driving for Martinsville's own HT Motorsports. At one point, Pressley was as high as second, but as has been typical of Robert's season, Lady Luck once again frowned upon him and saddled him with a 31st place finish. Pressley told us what happened, and what his team's been doing to get more competitive heading into 2006.
That's all folks!

We'll have all of the action from the final four races right here at TrackSideLive!, and we'll pick up coverage at 9 am ET next Friday from Atlanta. That's it from Martinsville, good night everybody!
