Good Morning from Loudon, New Hampshire
09-16-2005 9:15 am
Good morning from New Hampshire International Speedway everyone, and welcome to TrackSideLive! coverage of the Sylvania 200 presented by Lowe's, round No. 19 of the 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. The weather is going to be on everyone's mind here this weekend as rain is forecast for today and tomorrow, and could be as big a factor as it was last year, if not bigger. We will keep you updated on the weather, and we'll track down all the stories in the garage for you here this weekend. Keep it locked on to TruckSeries.com for continuing coverage right here on TrackSideLive.
The Longest Mile
09-16-2005 9:18 am
The "Magic Mile" is 1.058 miles in length, meaning the 200-lap race distance will make for a 211.6 mile race. The turns are banked a slight 12 degrees, while the 1,500 foot straightaways are banked at 2 degrees, just enough to let the rain water run off. NHIS opened with a NASCAR Busch Series race in 1990, and played host to its first NASCAR Cup Series race in 1993. That race was won by Rusty Wallace, but it was also the final start for Davey Allison, who would be fatally injured in a helicopter crash just days later. The Truck Series joined the card at NHIS in 1996, and that event produced a wild finish that saw Ron Hornaday prevail after passing eight trucks on the final lap, a few of them in the final corner to take the win.
Hurts So Good
09-16-2005 9:54 am
Dennis Setzer has found the going to be both smooth sailing and rough and 100 miles of bad road here at NHIS. After a disappointing 34th-place run last week in Richmond, he's hoping to return to the dream of 1999 and not the nightmare of 2000. In 1999, Setzer picked up the win after leading 48 laps and holding off a determined Mike Wallace in overtime. The following season, Setzer returned as the defending champion but a deflated right front tire sent him barreling head-on into the turn three wall and almost on to his side in a hard crash that left him with a broken shoulder. Overall, Setzer has an 8.2 average finish at NHIS, with one win, four top-5 and five top-10 finishes in six races. His only finish lower than sixth was the 33rd in 2000. Setzer hopes that streak of smooth sailing stays in tact and allows him to start to rebuild his once formidable point lead.
Cloudy But Dry
09-16-2005 10:00 am
While menacing clouds blanket the entire region surrounding New Hampshire International Speedway, the racing surface remains dry and a light mist early on has given way to overcast skies. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour drivers have taken to the track for their scheduled practice session. Hang tight, trucks are coming up at 10:45 am ET.

K-Auto Finds Success at Loudon
09-16-2005 12:06 am
K-Automotive has had much success at NHIS in the past. Dennis Setzer drove to victory for the team in 1999, and Terry Cook repeated the feat in 2002. In nine previous races at NHIS, K-Automotive is the only team to have brought home the trophy more than once. Youngster Brad Keselowski will be making his first start at NHIS in the family's No. 29 Ford here this weekend coming off a 16th-place finish last race at Richmond.
Weather Still a Factor
09-16-2005 1:07 pm
A light mist has descended on New Hampshire International Speedway. The NASCAR Busch North Series has just concluded their opening ceremonies and the drivers have been given the call to Start Your Engines. Weather permitting, the second and final NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice session is still on for 2:45 pm or immediately after the Busch North event.
Chad Chaffin, No. 60 Toyota
09-16-2005 1:16 pm
“I feel pretty good with this truck. It reminds me a lot of our truck at Bristol. We started out in practice a little tight in the center but Tony (Furr, Crew Chief) called for the right adjustments that really helped when we went back on the track. We never made a sticker run but still posted some pretty stout times. We’re hoping to get the next practice in so we can make the truck even better and get in our mock qualifying run. I’m excited because this Wyler Racing team has been really improving and we have a good truck for the race tomorrow.”
Deborah Renshaw, No. 8 Dodge
09-16-2005 1:49 pm
“When we first went out the No. 8 Heritage Dodge was really turing well in the middle of the corners, but when I got back on the accelerator it felt like its going to get out from underneath me. They tightened me up a bit and I felt more secure in driving it hard off the corner. I didn’t like it when it was rotating so much; when they tightened me up and changed the shocks it was right where I needed it to be. My spotter was instrumental in helping me develop my line. I found the higher I was in the center of the corner the better I became. I’m really happy with the truck right now and hope the rain holds off so we can get our last practice in.”
David Reutimann, No. 17 Toyota
09-16-2005 2:14 pm
"We've been free in the center all day," said Reutimann. "We're definitely gaining on it and we are moving in the right direction. Some guys made qualifying runs, but we haven't and that's why are so far back on the practice sheet. I feel like we're almost there. We'll be fine for the race."
Final Truck Practice Up Next
09-16-2005 3:07 pm
Ted Christoper has won the Busch North race which will give way to our final NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice session. Jet dryers are on track cleaning debris leftover from the NBNS event and we should be cleared for truck practice shortly.
Trucks Go Green, Then Yellow
09-16-2005 3:18 pm
Garrett Liberty brought out the caution flag after sustaining significant damage to the right front of his No. 4 Dodge. Liberty was able to limp his truck back to the garage area and practice will resume once we get the track cleared of debris.

Brandon Whitt will start second – his second time to qualify for the front row. Whitt won from the Bud Pole at Memphis Motorsports Park.
The top two qualifiers broke the existing track record of 29.637 seconds, 128.515 mph set Sept. 18, 2004 by Jack Sprague.

Performance Driven in 2005
09-17-2005 12:18 pm
Looking at some other stats, there is no question that Dennis Setzer is having the best season of any driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He leads all drivers with four wins, has been up front for 380 laps, and has also racked up 11 top-10 finishes compared to just one DNF. His average finish is 9.9, one of only two drivers to have an average finish less than 10.
The other driver to get that average finish under 10 is second-place in points Ted Musgrave. Musgrave has one win, but has also racked up 11 top-tens throughout the 18 races we've run so far. Musgrave has one more DNF than Setzer, but has an even better average finish than the point leader with a 9.6. The difference in points right now is the 30 added points Setzer has picked up for winning three more races (remember, NASCAR's point payout offers 180 points for a win, and 170 points for finishing second. Musgrave has only led two races to Setzer's 7, and if you take away the added points earned for wins and for leading races, Musgave would be the point leader.
Mike Skinner has come to life with two wins in the last two races and moved to fourth in points, and has led an impressive 710 laps in the 10 races he's led. Skinner's laps led total is ahead of only third-place point man Ron Hornaday, who's paced the field across the stripe 404 times.
Jimmy Spencer has yet to crack into victory lane (well, other than Daytona - but unfortunately he couldn't stay), but he does have 8 top-10 runs and sits fifth in points. Spencer has had a season full of consistent runs and has rarely finished outside the top-20. His eight top-10 runs are nice, but by maximizing those finishes in the races that he wasn't inside the top-10, he has racked up the third-best average finish of any driver in 2005 with an 11.7.
Bobby Hamilton picked up two wins in the first part of the season, snatching the victory away from Spencer at Daytona and following it up with his second win of the season at Mansfield. Since then, Hamilton has picked up some points by running in and among the top-10. but tough luck at Bristol and an off-night by the BHR team in Richmond has sent him spiraling back in the points. Even with some of the rotten luck Hamilton has faced in his title defense, his BHR guys have continually kept him running at the finish as he's yet to be saddled with a DNF in 2005.
Todd Bodine's silly season started in June, swapping teams in the middle of the season. It hasn't hampered his efforts to break into the top-5 in points as he's been on a charge since then picking up a win and several top-5 finishes. Bodine has led 233 laps in 7 races, and has 9 top-10 finishes. Bodine has the distinction of being the guy with the most DNF's among the top-10 as he's been behind the wall or in the garage at the checkered 6 times in 2005.
David Reutimann picked up his first win at Nashville, and has led 144 laps in 8 races. He also has seven top-10s compared to just one DNF with an average finish of 13.7.
Matt Crafton has led the fewest number of laps of any driver among the top-10 in points in 2005, getting up front for just 14 laps in two races. He's picked up two top-5 finishes and eight top-10s with just one DNF. With a very consistent season he's put together a very good average finish of 12.3.
David Starr rounds out the top-10 in points. He's led two races for 58 laps, and like Crafton he's racked up two top-5 finishes and eight top-10s with just one DNF. Starr's average finish is 14.1.
171 Races Later, ThorSport Captures Another Bud Pole
09-17-2005 12:26 am
It has been 171 races since ThorSport Racing has qualified fastest for a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. Terry Cook won the pole for the 19th race of the 27-race 1997 season for the team at Louisville Motor Speedway. Cook came close to a pole for the team at Watkins Glen in 2000, but was knocked off the pole by Greg Biffle.
Matt Crafton's best previous start with the team was fifth at Bristol in 2003, and his best previous career start was second at Homestead last fall.
Oddly enough, Crafton gives ThorSport Racing another pole position in the 19th race of the 2005 season. Crafton is one of the most superstitious drivers in the series, and he's doubtlessly hoping that numerology helps propel him to his first career NCTS win here this weekend as well.
The last first-time pole winner in the NCTS was Brandon Whitt, who picked up a thrilling last-lap win as well after taking the green from the inside front row at Memphis Motorsports Park back in July.

NHIS Races Summary
09-17-2005 1:57 pm
NHIS Race Averages
There have been nine previous races at New Hampshire International Speedway since 1996. The winner has started no worse than 10th in eight of the nine races, but in the other, the winner came from outside the top-20. Jay Sauter won from 26th position in 1996 to come from the deepest in the field to win. The average start of race winners at New Hampshire is 7th. The pole winner has won two of the last four races at NHIS, which gives pole winner Matt Crafton an added boost in his search for his first career NCTS win.
There are an average of 13 lead lap finishers, with a high of 19 drivers on the lead lap at the end last year, and a low of just 8 drivers on the lead lap in both 1996 and 2001.
There are an average of 9.44 lead changes per race at NHIS. The record is 15 in 1998, with a low of 3 coming in 2001.
There are an average of 5.89 lead drivers in Loudon, with a record high of 8 in 1999 and 2004. The fewest number of drivers to lead at Loudon is 3 coming in 2001.
The caution comes out an average of 6.89 times per race, with the most being 10 in 2004 and the fewest being 4 in 2001.
The pace truck leads the field for an average of 34.2 laps at Loudon, but the caution flag was out for a record 67 laps in 2004. The fewest number of laps turned with the yellow lights on was 19 in 2001.
The cumulative average speed is 100.548 miles per hour. The quickest race at NHIS was 109.244 mph in 2001, while last year's rain-delayed, rain-interrupted, and finally rain-shortened race was the slowest at 89.482.
Who's led the most laps in each 2005 race?
09-17-2005 1:59 pm
Does leading the most laps in a race mean the driver that does so has a shot to win the race? It certainly doesn't hurt, but it doesn't always mean that driver is going to make that final turn down Victory Lane.
Nine different drivers have led the most laps in an NCTS race so far in 2005. Todd Bodine, David Starr, Rick Crawford, Ted Musgrave, Ron Hornaday, Kyle Busch, Mike Skinner, Dennis Setzer, and Terry Cook have all led the most laps in a race so this year. Bodine's done it three times (Daytona, Martinsville, and Kansas), as has Setzer (Michigan, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis) and Hornaday (Mansfield, Dover, and Memphis). Skinner has done it even more, picking up the bonus points for leading the most laps four times (Texas1, Nashville, Bristol, and Richmond).
Starr led the most laps at California, Crawford at Atlanta, Musgrave at Gateway,Busch at Charlotte and Cook did it at Kentucky.
Musgrave led the most laps at Gateway and went on to win, as did Kyle Busch at Charlotte. Setzer did it all three times he led the most laps, as did Bodine at Kansas. Skinner has done it the past two races at Bristol and Richmond.

Sylvania 200 Race Updates 1-10
09-17-2005 2:46 pm
10. Lap 10 - Crafton is the only non-Toyota among the top-5 as he leads Reutimann, Skinner, Chaffin and Reutimann. Skinner slides past Reutimann and starts to try to chase down leader Crafton.
9. Lap 6 - Whitt pancakes the wall coming out of turn four while running second. Reutimann slides by into second, while Skinner has moved into third. Whitt now has a big push in his truck and has trucks lined up on the inside shuffling him back into the pack.
8. Lap 4 - Crawford is fighting the track and has lost a couple of positions to Bodine and Skinner.
7. Green flag is out. Crafton and Whitt go side by side into one, but Whitt slides up and Crafton takes the top spot coming to complete lap one Whitt now faces pressure from third place Reutimann.
6. The field is behind the pace trucks setting pit road speed. Trucks will come to pit road at 35 miles per hour here this afternoon.
5. Trucks are rolling off the grid. No one has been reported to be moving to the back of the field for the start.
4. A great crowd has weathered a cool and cloudy day and is in place as the command to fire engines has been given.
3. NASCAR has put us on Hurry Up Mode to get the Sylvania 200 underway. Skies are indeed gray and overcast, but radar shows no rain in the area for the immediate future.
2. It's cloudy and cool, but we are already miles ahead of where we were last year at this time. Remember last year's monsoon that kept us wondering when we would finally go green? Well, the rain all came on Thursday, and we expect to get all 200 laps in without an interruption from Mother Nature.
1. The trucks are gridded on pit and ready to roll off. We'll have race updates throughout, so keep it locked on to TrackSideLive!
Sylvania 200 Race Updates 11-20
09-17-2005 3:22 pm
20. Lap 56 - Spencer has a right front go down entering turn three and he drives the truck up next to the turn four wall. Spencer will be tagged with a one-lap penalty for intentionally drawing the caution. Leaders are coming to pit road.
19. Lap 54 - Whitt's truck is now off the pace and he is saddled back in 34th position and has dropped off the lead lap as Skinner has caught the back of the field.
18. Lap 50 - Skinner, Bodine, Bodine, Crafton, Crawflord, Reutimann, Hornaday, Benson, Musgrave, and Setzer are the top-10.
17. Lap 40 - Musgrave moves in front of Setzer on the speedway for the first time all day. Musgrave is 10th with Setzer 12th.
