Good Morning from RIR

09-08-2005  9:43 am

Good morning from the beautiful Richmond International Raceway! It is a gorgeous day here in the capital of the commonwealth, and we expect sunny skies all day long with high temps to reach the mid 80s. It should cool off just in time for the green flag, which will provide for some hot action on the racetrack. We have a couple of practice sessions coming up starting at 11 am ET, and then we move into qualifying mode with Live! Bud Pole Qualifying to set the 36-truck field at 5 pm ET. We'll bring you all the race action as well with the green flag for tonight's Cheerios Betty Crocker 200 scheduled for shortly after 8 pm ET. Keep it locked down all day long for continuous updates from Richmond!

Garage Buzzing with Activity

09-08-2005  10:15 am

The NCTS garage is buzzing with activity as we are counting down the sands through the hourglass until the first truck rolls onto the track for practice. Teams are making their final adjustments to their machines or pushing them through the height sticks one final time. We even spotted Brad Keselowski finishing up a quick spin around the speedway in one of the NASCAR pace trucks. We have about a half an hour remaining before we start practice. Keep it locked to TruckSeries.com as we get ready for practice.

Qualifying will be intense

09-08-2005  10:40 am

With 15 drivers attempting to qualify for the 6 open spots in the field, this afternoon's Bud Pole Qualifying will be intense.  There are more good trucks than open spots, so we will definitely have at least one big name driver/team combination head for the house once the field is set.  If one of the independent teams steps it up and lays down a strong lap with a slick qualifying-only setup, we could have a couple of the big name teams load up and go home.

Here are the drivers that need to race in on speed:

Kelly Sutton
Mike Bliss
Ronnie Hornaday
Justin Hobgood
Rob Ferguson
Bobby East
Andy Houston
Johnny Sauter
Kevin Harvick
Ken Schrader
Chad Chaffin
Clay Rogers
Tam Topham
Craig Wood

Tony Stewart

Trucks on track

09-08-2005  10:51 am

The first trucks have rolled out on to the three-quarter mile Richmond International Raceway as we begin practice for the Cheerios Betty Crocker 200.  Radio chatter has the teams discussing plans for the early laps with many teams wanting to get tire readings and seed in their brakes right off the bat.

They Said It, Prac 1 No 1

09-08-2005  10:57 am

Todd Bodine, No. 30 Toyota: "It has a bit of an understeer snap to it. I don't know if we can fix it without it jumping loose."

Justin Hobgood, No. 9 Toyota: "When you turn it, the whole chassis just starts turning. It's real loose."

Jack Bailey, No. 07 Chevrolet: "It has some throttle tight that makes the rear wheels spin."

TheySaid It Prac 1 No 2

09-08-2005  11:00 am

Tracy Hines, No. 13 Chevrolet: "I am really good in and really good off, but I am chirping the tires through the center."

Steve Park, No. 62 Dodge: "It doesn't rotate in the center like I need it to."

Robert Pressley, No. 59 Dodge: "It's turning good all the way through the corner. The only thing I am feeling is that camber in the left front dragging that tire."

Red and Black Flags Waving

09-08-2005  11:37 am

The red and black flags are waving, signifying the end of the first 45 minutes of practice for the Cheerios Betty Crocker 200. Chad Chaffin led the session at 125.354 mph, with Mike Skinner, Jack Sprague, Bobby Hamilton and Robert Pressley close behind.

Chaffin, Mike Bliss, Kevin Harvick, Justin Hobgood, Ken Schrader, and Tony Stewart would have earned spots in the field based on their practice times, while Clay Rogers, Bobby East, Ronnie Hornaday III, Andy Houston, Johnny Sauter, Tam Topham, Kelly Sutton, Rob Ferguson, and Craig Wood are all looking for a little extra speed to help secure them a spot in the field once we go qualifying later this afternoon.

We'll have a complete results sheet posted in a couple of minutes to the event box on the main page.

Prac 1 Breakdown

09-08-2005  11:46 am

It should come as no surprise to see Chad Chaffin at the top of the sheet after practice here in Richmond as he was very strong in Bristol as well. Mike Skinner picks up where he left off last race as well, with a win at Bristol prepping him very well here for Richmond. Jack Sprague has had a lot of success at Richmond in the past, including one of the most spectacular burn-outs in the history of post-race celebrations coming in 2001, and he ended up third after the first session. Bobby Hamilton had a strong practice session looking to rebound off a disappointing race in Bristol and was fourth, with Robert Pressley pulling off an impressive run to wind up fifth.

Forty-two of the 45 drivers on hand were within one second of Chaffin's fast lap of 21.539 seconds/125.354 mph. Twenty-nine drivers were within half a second.

Some of the biggest names in the series found the road a tough one in practice, with current point leader Dennis Setzer ending up 34th on the sheet. Brendan Gaughan was not much better, only mustering the 31st quickest lap. Jarit Johnson, younger brother of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series star Jimmie Johnson, wound up 37th on the sheet, while Mike Wallace could only turn the 42nd fastest lap.

The teams have another 90 minutes to get their trucks ready to qualify, with Final Practice running from 12:30 pm ET to 2 pm ET. We'll see who finds some speed and who needs to pick up the pace shortly. Keep it locked to TruckSeries.com for all the action from Final Practice, coming up next!

Hamilton Doing the Thursday Double

09-08-2005  12:01 pm

Bobby Hamilton has 290 laps on tap for him here this evening, and Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart would like to. Hamilton, Harvick, and Stewart are all scheduled to run the Crown Royal IROC race prior to the Cheerios Betty Crocker 200 here this evening. Hamilton is locked into tonight's NCTS field, while Stewart and Harvick must qualify on speed.

Cook Leads the Charge

09-08-2005  12:24 am

Terry Cook led the charge on to the track for Final Practice, followed by Justin Hobgood, Ron Hornaday, and Jack Sprague. We'll have rundowns and news updates as it happens throughout the next 90 minutes.

Hard Racing in Practice

09-08-2005  12:27 am

Mike Skinner and Dennis Setzer just spent the better part of a lap and a half racing side by side, proving that NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers want to be in front no matter what, even if it's just practice. For those drivers locked into the field for tonight's race, this is the final opportunity to test out race setups and there is no better way to test them than to actually race.

09-08-2005  12:43 pm

Twenty minutes into the second and final practice, 44 of the 45 entrants have been out on to the track for at least one lap of practice. The only drive yet to make a lap? None other than the fastest driver in the first session, Chad Chaffin.

Mike Bliss still leads with Mike Skinner, Bobby Hamilton, Kevin Harvick, and Timothy Peters the top-5. Bobby East just made a huge jump up the list to sixth. He was mired back in 36th just a couple of moments ago.

We still have about an hour to go in this session, so stick around! We'll have it all right here on TrackSideLive if and when it happens.

09-08-2005  1:06 pm

Bill Lester, No. 22 Toyota: "It's doing what I ask it to do. If I push it really hard, I can still get it to chatter the tires."

David Reutimann, No. 17 Toyota: "It's a lot better than what we had."

Top 10 Safe? Think again...

09-08-2005  1:09 pm

Do you think a driver in the the top-10 in qualifying is safe to make the race here today? Well, if qualifying plays out anything like the second practice is playing out, we could have a driver qualify among the top-10 and drive it to the trailer and head for the house. Seven teams that need to qualify for the race on speed are among the top-10, with Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Chad Chaffin, Mike Bliss, Bobby East, and Ken Schrader the six fastest of the seven. Schrader sits eighth on the chart, while Justin Hobgood is tenth, but oddly on the outside looking in.

Starr Spins Off Four

09-08-2005  1:47 pm

David Starr spun the Spears Motorsports No. 75 Chevrolet coming off turn four to bring out the only red flag for an incident throughout both practice sessions here this afternoon. He made no contact with another truck or the retaining wall, and drove it back to the garage. We've gone back to green with just about 4 minutes left in the session.

We're done...

09-08-2005  1:52 pm

The final truck has passed the line and with the red and black flags waving, we're going to have some peace and quite for the next three hours as we have concluded practice for the Cheerios Betty Crocker 200. The next on track action is Bud Pole Qualifying, and of course we'll have all that action for you Live! right here at TruckSeries.com.

Close margins...

09-08-2005  6:24 pm

The margin between pole winner David Starr and second-place Mike Skinner was as close as you could be without it being a tie. Just 0.001 second separated the two, and gave Starr his second pole of the season and kept Skinner off the pole for the fifth time this season.

It was pretty close for the bubble drivers too. Ken Schrader squeeked in to the field, qualifying 26th, with a 21.561 second lap. Tony Stewart is going to watch from the sidelines tonight after qualifying 29th with a lap of 21.606 seconds.

Jack Sprague led 196 of 200 laps on way to victory in 2001.

Overtime anyone?

09-08-2005  6:57 pm

How likely is it we will go into overtime here at Richmond? In ten previous races here, we have only gone into overtime once, that coming last year. That said, we have not had any incidents here during practice or qualifying, so if that means anything, we should see some extra action during the race. If that plays out the way it usually does, we could see a green-white-checkered here tonight too.

Richmond Races Summary

09-08-2005  7:00 pm

There have been 10 previous races here at RIR. The average start of the winner is 8.5, with the pole winner winning the race just once (1995, Terry Labonte). The lowest start of a winner was 27th, by Tony Stewart in 2003. Stewart also started 25th and went on to win in 2002. Ironically, he qualified 29th here tonight and could have kept the streak going, but missed the field.

There are an average of 17 lead lap finishers, with a high of 24 in 1998 and a low of 7 in 2001.

There are an average of 7.6 lead changes, with a high of 17 in 1999 and a low of 3 in 1996 and 2002.

There are an average of 4.6 lead drivers, with a high of 7 in 1999 and a low of 2 in 1996.

The caution flag waves an average of 7.7 times per race, with a high of 11 in 2004 and a low of 5 in 1997 and 2000.

Schrader under penalty

09-08-2005  8:28 pm

Ken Schrader is technically under penalty for the start of the race here this evening, but it's of little consequence since he is scheduled to line up 36th on the grid anyhow. Schrader's crew changed an engine between the final practice and qualifying, and per the NASCAR rulebook, he would have had to line up at the tail of the field regardless of qualifying position.

Martin to Trucks on a Limited Basis in 2006

09-08-2005  8:34 pm

Mark Martin has had to change his plans for 2006, in which he was originally planning on doing a full-time NCTS effort. Since his replacement in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series cannot take over until 2007, Martin will return to the No. 6 Ford for a second run at a goodbye tour in 2006. However, he told the media in attendance at RIR following his IROC win that his first truck for 2006 has been completed and he and his Roush Racing crew are preparing to go test for the first time in coming weeks. "I told these guys I wanted to slow down, not speed up," Martin said. "I am going to be back in the No. 6 car again next year, and I want to come and run 7 truck races. I was going to do 10 Busch races next year too, but those will probably have to go."

Cheerios Betty Crocker 200 Race Updates 11-20

09-08-2005  8:58 pm

20. Lap 64 - Harvick allows Setzer to poke ahead at the line to lead and pick up the five bonus points. Harvick gets back out in front and starts to pull away.

19. Lap 58 - Skinner pits, but Harvick and Setzer stay out. Skinner wins the race of pit road followed by Musgave, Starr, Whitt, Hornaday, Bodine, Rogers Reutimann, Kluever, Busch, Craven, Park, Crafton, Pressley, Hamilton, Montgomery, Bailey, Hines, Gaughan, Lester, and Hobgood. Harvick leads Setzer, Wallace, Cook, and Peters. Benson is sixth followed by Spencer, Renshaw, Chaffin, Schrader, and Keselowski. Skinner and the rest of the trucks that pitted follow.

18. Lap 54 - Is Harvick faster or is Skinner's time up top slowing him down? Harvick is knocking on the door hard as they have pulled away from third place Musgrave. Harvick dips half a groove lower through the turns looking for a way through. Hobgood gets hit and takes a smokey slide through turn two to bring out Caution 4. Park reports a vibration and will come to pit road for four tires.

17. Lap 49 - Harvick jumps to second and starts chasing down Skinner. Keselowski is reporting an ignition problem. Gaughan and Lester race hard side by side.

16. Lap 44 - Skinner leads Starr, Harvick, Musgrave, Whitt, Bodine, Crafton, Rogers, Pressley, Reutimann, Setzer, Park, Hamilton, Kluever, Busch, Craven, Lester, Gaughan, Hines, Wallace, Bailey, Cook, Peters, Benson, Montgomery, Hornaday, Spencer, Chaffin, Schrader, Hobgood, Sauter, Keselowski, and Johnson. Lights are out on the pace truck. Skinner reports to his crew that he is going to try the outside lane and wants to hear lap times to see where he is faster.

15. Lap 42 - Cook, Hornaday, Benson Spencer, Peters, Hobgood, Keselowski, Shcrader, and Chaffin come to the pits. Rick Ren, Benson's crew chief said "Let's come to pit road. Sometimes making a gamble and getting off sequence wins these things."

14. Lap 40 - Cook and Busch have moved up to the outside through one and two looking for some added speed. Caution 3 is out for debris on the frontstretch.

13. Lap 32 - Whitt is knocking on Cook's back door coming off turn two. Sprague has slotted between leader Skinner and second place Starr. The first race for position is Hines and Keselowski racing for 25th.

12. Lap 29 - Restart. Skinner again gets a jump and pulls away as Starr has to deal with the lapped Sprague on the inside.

11. Lap 26 - Crawford is extremely upset at his troubles early in the going. "I know what kind of condition we were to come here and race. This is just pathetic," he said disgustedly. He will line up at the back for the next restart in case he encounters more problems on his No. 14 Ford.

Cheerios Betty Crocker 200 Race Updates 21-30

09-08-2005  9:21 pm

29. Lap 107 - Park is off the pace and dropping towards the back of the pack. Harvick has raced his way back up to ninth.

28. Lap 99 - Restart. Skinner leads byt Musgrave applies pressure to the outside. Sauter is being flagged for passing to the left during the doubleup. Craven leads a gaggle into one with Bodine charging hard through the pack. Bailey bounced off the wall out of two and flattened the right side of his machine.

27. Lap 93 - Skinner takes over the lead as Wallace pits. Busch wins the race off pit road followed by Cook, Wallace, Starr, Crafton, Sauter, Kluever, Reutimann, Montgomery, and Hines. Skinner leads Musgrave, Spencer, Benson, Chaffin, Keselowski, Hornaday, Schrader, Pressley, Craven, Bailey, Park, Harvick, Bodine, Gaughan, Park, Hamilton, and then the drivers that pitted. Whitt's crew has patched the hood down with tape while Peters is also out rolling with damage patched.

26. Lap 92 - Skinner takes second from Cook. Setzer's problems are made worse by the fact that Musgrave is running third. Peters makes some contact with Whitt and both slide into the turn four wall. Peters has damage to the front and the rear, while Whitt has damage to the right side.

25. Lap 88 - Green out. Setzer sits on pit road with the hood up. Wallace leads but Sprague slides up and makes contact through turns one and two. Skinner is pressing Cook for second.

24. Lap 83 - Setzer will come back for repairs. The sway bar arm has been ground off and his crew is calling for the parts needed to effect repairs. Harvick comes to the pits giving the lead to Mike Wallace. Cook is second, with Skinner, Spencer, Benson, Musgrave, Chaffin, Starr, Keselowski, Schrader, Hornaday, Rogers, Reutimann, Kluever, Busch, Craven, Crafton, Pressley, Park, Hines, Bailey, Montgomery, Harvick, Peters, Bodine, Whitt, Hamilton, and Gaughan. Setzer has a tire go down in turn three and does a great job to keep the truck off the wall. His team reports it's dragging the sway bar and there is a massive shower of sparks behind the machine.

22. Lap 74 - Cook leads the drivers that have been to pit road once in fourth. Skinner and Spencer continue their battle for fifth. They have been side by side for the past five or six laps before Skinner dives deep into one to take over the spot.

21. Lap 68 - Spencer dusts off Peters for fifth. Skinner is up to sixth as he too gets past Peters. Harvick is nearly two full seconds ahead of Setzer.

35. Lap 141 - Pits are open. Skinner comes down with Musgrave, Harvick, and the rest. Bodine stays out to take the lead followed by Cook, Kluever, Wallace, and Hines. Skinner wins the race off pit road and will line up seventh with Starr, Musgrave, Crafton, Benson, Harvick, Spencer, Hornaday, Pressley, Rogers, Chaffin, Craven, Gaughan, Keselowski and Busch. Reutimann stayed out and will restart the race in front of leader Bodine on the tail end of the lead lap.

34. Lap 137 - Keselowski slides up the track in turn two and gives up seventh to Pressley. He's now racing hard with Craven for eighth. Cook looks three wide going into three underneath Gaugham and Starr. Bailey gets whacked in traffic and spins into the SAFER barrier in turn two.

33. Lap 131 - Hamilton falls victim to Skinner's relentless charge and goes down a lap as well. Musgrave, Harvick, Spencer, and Benson round out the top-5.

32. Lap 126 - Reutimann made contact with Schrader down the backstretch and has dinged up the right front of his machine. Sparks fly each time he barrels off into the corner. Skinner has caught lapped traffic and is closing on Reutimann to put him a lap down.

Bodine leads Skinner, Cook, Harvick, Musgrave, Hines, Wallace, Starr, Crafton and Pressley.

  • Todd Bodine finished second in the race for the second consecutive week. Bodine has finished in the top three for three consecutive races. He has seven top five and nine top-10 finishes this season. Bodine has finished in the top six in all three of his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at Richmond.
  • Ted Musgrave finished fourth to cut Setzer's point lead from 143 to 49. Setzer finished in 34th place, 25 laps down, after tire problems on Lap 80.

A Quick Look at the Points

09-08-2005  11:43 pm

Setzer still leads the points, but his lead has shrunk to just 50 points over second place Musgrave. Hornaday stays third, with Skinner jumping up to fourth. Spencer drops one spot to fifth, while Hamilton drops three spots to sixth. Bodine jumps two spots to seventh, while Reutimann drops two to eighth. Crafton also drops a spot to ninth while Starr stays steady in tenth. There are 208 points first to fifth, and 363 points first to tenth.

Post-race tempers

09-08-2005  11:49 pm

A few drivers were a little steamed after the race here tonight. Terry Cook made some significant contact with Ted Musgrave after the race to show his dissatisfaction with what went on in turn one late in the race. Brendan Gaughan had a post-race discussion with at least one driver following the race, and Todd Kluever had a long face and some harsh words for Jack Sprague after he got forced into the wall late in the going. Nothing like a little drama after the end of a hard fought NCTS race!

Owner points

09-08-2005  11:55 pm

No changes to the owner points where it matters. Morgan-Dollar is still at the top, and none of the bubble teams dropped out. The ThorSport No. 13 picked up a spot to 26th, the Green Light No. 07 fell back one to 27th, while the BHR No. 18 stayed steady in 28th. Green Light's No. 08 and BHR2's No. 8 swapped spots in 29th and 30th respectively.

Sutton Motorsports No. 02 missed the show and remains 31st.

Gonna Call It a Night!

09-09-2005  12:06 am

That's it folks, what a night! Mike Skinner went forever without picking up a sniff of a win, but goes yard back to back to pick up the win here tonight.

Check out the post-race audio from second-place finisher Todd Bodine, a jubilant fifth-place finisher Tracy Hines, his teammate Matt Crafton who finished seventh, and a great interview with Brendan Gaughan and his crew chief Rambo Liberati.
