Good morning from the noisiest place in the state of Tennessee! We are just getting set up for a long, hot, and loud day at the Bristol Motor Speedway as we are closing in on the start of practice for the O'Reilly 200 presented by Valvoline MaxLife, round 17 of the 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. Bristol Weather

08-24-2005  9:37 am

It's a little steamy here at Bristol this morning, with high humidity and already warm temps. It is supposed to be partly cloudy this afternoon with high temps reaching 85 degrees. There is a 20-precent chance of sprinkles, so we should be high and dry all day long.

Bristol Track Facts

08-24-2005  9:50 am

Bristol Motor Speedway is 0.533 miles in length, with the steepest banking in American motorsports in the turns. Each end of the track is tilted at 36 degrees, with the straights banked at a still-steep 16 degrees. The straightaways are both 630 feet in length, or just over two football fields. The 200 lap race distance equates to 106.6 miles.

Bristol Track Records

08-24-2005  9:56 am

Race (200 laps) - Travis Kvapil, 1 hour, 12 minutes, 1 second/88.813 miles per hour (2003)

Also on the card...

08-24-2005  11:00 am

Also on the card here today is the USAR Hooter's Pro Cup Series, which will run a 150-lap race as a prelude to tonight's NCTS race.  Several notable NCTS names are in the field, including Mark McFarland, Clay Rogers, Billy Bigley, Jr., Michael Ritch, Rick Markle, Danny O'Quinn, Jody Lavender, and Bill Manful.

With the USAR practice going on now, it means the teams will have the sound of racing engines ringing in their ears all day long. The Hooter's Cup cars will qualifyin between NCTS practice and qualifying, and will go into race mode as soon as NCTS qualifying is completed.  The only quiet time we will have all afternoon is during the short breaks between series, the 30 minutes between the two NCTS practices, and whatever time we have between the two races this evening.  They don't call it Thunder Valley for nothing!

Practice up next!

Renshaw Brings Out Red

08-24-2005  1:08 pm

Deborah Renshaw has crashed in turns one and two to bring out the first red flag of the day. She made contact with the right front corner of her machine and coasted to a stop in turns three and four. She has been talking to her crew, but the crew is now heading to get the backup out of the trailer. We will have a report on her condition when it is available.

UPDATE: Renshaw has told her crew she is okay, however she did say she banged up her left wrist in the accident.  We will track her down as soon as she is available.  The team has unloaded the backup in hopes of making a few more laps before qualifying.

08-24-2005  1:43 pm

Skinner now on top, with Musgrave second, Chaffin third, Keselowski a strong fourth and Schrader in fifth. Skinner's quick lap is 15.276. Caution is out for debris on the frontstretch.

Hornaday and Tucker Tangle

08-24-2005  1:49 pm

Ron Hornaday and Nick Ticker tangled coming off turn four and spun down the frontstetch to bring out the third red flag of the day. Tucker apparently made contact with the rear of Hornaday's truck and then got into the fence. Tucker was out of his truck and looking over the damage with his crew, while Hornaday's truck didn't have any noticable damage at first glance.

Final Practice Done...Quals Up Next

08-24-2005  1:58 pm

The final NCTS practice of the day is done, and now the teams move into qualifying mode.  Click here for the final practice results.   We are going to canvass the garage area for the newsmakers of the day and bring you some of our exclusive TrackSideLive! audio, so peruse the TruckShots gallery and hang out for a while!  We'll have some audio as soon as we get back from the garage area...

TrackSide Audio!

08-24-2005  2:54 pm

We just returned from the garage after catching up with several drivers that have been making some noise here this afternoon.

We tracked down Nick Tucker, who was involved in an incident late in the second practice session to get the low down on what happened to tear his truck up so bad.  We also got with Brad Keselowski, who has been very impressive here today despite only seeing Bristol on a video game before coming through the gate this morning.  Bill Lester tells us what, if any, similarities are there between racing at Bristol and his road racing background.  Todd Kluever is a veteran of the high banks at Salem and Winchester, but found the going a little slow this morning.  We met up with Andy Houston earlier this season in a shop tour at ppc Racing, and we caught up with him here today when he is in uniform and ready to go race for the first time this season.  Point leader Dennis Setzer is ready to rumble here tonight, while Timothy Peters is hoping he doesn't rumble on the high banks after a rough race in Nashville a couple of weeks ago.  Finally, Brendan Gaughan is stoked at the way his team has rallied after a rough start to 2005, and he tells us what a key role experience plays here in Thunder Valley.

Check out the sights and sounds list on the right column.

Five Former Series Champs in the Field

08-24-2005  3:06 pm

For the first time in NCTS history, there are five former series champions scheduled to compete tonight.  Mike Skinner, Ron Hornaday, Jack Sprague, Mike Bliss, and Bobby Hamilton are all locked into the field here this evening.  Bliss is the only champion is series history to not make a series start after locking up his championship, and hasn't been in an NCTS race since Homestead 2002, but that obviously will be broken here tonight.

Final Practice Results

Click here for Final Practice Results

Notables...two-time Bristol pole winner Mike Skinner led both sessions, with a quick time in session 2 of 15.276 seconds...Kyle Busch moved into second in the second session late in the going...former series champion Mike Bliss has been extremely strong in practice, coming home sixth in the first session and fifth in the second...experience is a premium here at Bristol, but rookies Timothy Peters and Todd Kluever both cracked the top-10 in final practice...Bliss is locked into the field based on his 2002 series championship leaving five positions open; based on second practice times, Chad Chaffin, Ken Schrader, Wayne Edwards, Tim Fedewa, and Andy Houston would have made the race...missing the field, if we set the field based on practice times, would have been Tam Topham, Kelly Sutton, Nick Tucker, Frank Wilson, Casey Kingsland and Eric King...King did not make a lap in the final practice...Busch turned the highest number of laps in the second session with 52, and made his fastest lap on his 51st circuit.

Inspection Line Open

08-24-2005  4:09 pm

The first Trucks are making their way to the inspection line prior to qualifying.  Meanwhile, the Brevak Racing crew is still affecting repairs to the No. 31 Dodge after Nick Tucker's practice incident and the BHR2 team is finishing up and engine change in their backup machine after Deborah Renshaw's crash in practice.

Lot's of camber on the Chevrolets

08-24-2005  4:47 pm

A quick visual check of several Chevrolets show that each of the Silverados in line to qualify are running much more left front camber than teams utilizing the Ford F-150, Toyota Tunda and Dodge Ram body styles.  Even though this is a short track, the high speeds and the dynamic forces in the turns mean aerodynamics are a big issue, and building in that much front camber could be an indication that the Chevrolet crew chiefs think they may be at an aero disadvantage here.

Edwards to the No. 24 truck

08-24-2005  4:57 pm

Wayne Edwards has assumed driving duties of the No. 24 Mighty Motorsports Chevrolet.  Team owner Rob Ferguson practiced the truck but decided against making a qualifying attempt at the wheel.

Tucker's Truck Done

08-24-2005  5:12 pm

The Brevak Racing Team has finished the repairs on the No. 31 Dodge.  They put on a new front bumper cover, rear bumper cover, and patched up some damage to the right rear quarter panel.

"It was all cosmetic, no suspension damage at all," Tucker said.  "The hard part's done, now all we need to do is get a good lap and get in the race."

Pit road rules

08-24-2005  8:31 pm

With a frontstretch and backstretch pit road, NASCAR has enacted special rules for this evening for green flag and caution flag pit stops.  Under green, a driver needs to only utilize the pit road where his pit stall is.  For instance, Jack Sprague will only need to come down the backstretch pit road this evening if he is forced to make a green flag pitstop.  Under caution, all drivers coming to pit road must enter in off turn two, come down the backstretch pit road, circulate under the line in turns three and four, and come down the frontstretch pit road.  In the instance of a pass thru penalty, the driver only needs to go down the pit road where his/her pit stall is, however, if a driver is pitted on the frontstretch and enters the backstetch for a pass-thru, he/she must also go down the frontstretch pit road.

Pre-race notes...

08-24-2005  8:35 pm

Pit road speed is 30 miles per hour, and starts 180 feet before the first occupied pit stall on each pit road.  The pit road speed ends 75 feet past the last occupied pit stall on each pit road.  Drivers must maintain pit road speed thru the open turns three and four area under caution flag stops.

The restart point is the double red line on the wall outside turn four.

Minimum speed is 16.80 seconds.

The pace truck will run 35 miles per hour this evening.

Rogers Wins USAR Pro Cup Race

08-24-2005  8:48 pm

Part-time NCTS driver Clay Rogers has just driven to victory in the Food City 150 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series race.  The NCTS teams are now in hurry up mode getting the trucks to the grid and the pit stalls set up.  NASCAR officials are also in hurry up mode, as they are doing their best to get the drivers introduced to the massive crowd as quickly as they can to get the race off as near as on time as we can.

O'Reilly 200 Race Updates 1-10

08-24-2005  9:04 pm

10. Lap 35 - Tucker is running slow on the bottom of the track.  He may be in danger of not meeting NASCAR's minimum speed requirement.

9. Lap 25 - Restart. Skinner leads.  Chaffin, Sprague, Cook, and Benson are the top-5.

8. Lap 22 - Gaughan goes behind the wall for repairs.  Bodine has made repeated pit stops on the backstretch to repair the left front.

7. Lap 18 - Second yellow for a crash on the backstetch.  Lester spins after contact from Montgomery, and collects Gaughan and Tucker in the aftermath.  Gaughan contacts the inside wall and does significant damage to the nose of his truck.

6. Lap 13 - Green flag.  Skinner leads Reutimann, Chaffin, Sprague and Cook.

5. Lap 11 - No stops among the leaders.  One to go signal has been given to the field.

4. Lap 9 - Skinner pulls away as Reutimann and Chaffin fight for second. Wimmer spins coming out of turn four and makes contact with the inside wall.

3. Green flag. Skinner leads lap one as the field tries to get single file.

2. Engines are fired.  We'll have four pace laps on the initial roll-off here tonight.

1. The drivers have been introduced to the large audience here at Bristol Motor Speedway.  We're running a little behind following the USAR race, but NASCAR is in hurry-up mode trying to get us started as close to on time as possible.

15. Lap 57 - Cook is under fire as Setzer, Schrader and Starr all pass, pushing Cook back to 11th.
