Good Morning from IRP
08-05-2005 9:48 am
Good morning everyone and welcome to TrackSideLive! coverage of the Power Stroke Diesel 200 from Indianapolis Raceway Park. We woke up this morning to overcast skies and a 60 percent chance of morning showers, but that turned into a 100 percent chance in the last few minutes as the skies have opened up and a deluge has fallen on the IRP oval just a little more than an hour before the first practice was scheduled to begin. It obviously will affect the schedule somewhat, but NASCAR has not made any announcements regarding schedule changes for the day at this time. Once we get to noon, whatever precipitation is lingering in the area is expected to move out and we should have a nice mild summer evening for tonight's 200 lap slugfest here at IRP. Keep it locked on to TruckSeries.com for all the news and notes from IRP throughout the morning and afternoon leading up to Live! Bud Pole Qualifying this afternoon.

Clay Rogers is back this week, and for the first time since Charlotte in May he is in the No. 44 Ford.
Casey Kingsland is entered in the No. 91 Dodge, the first time he has been with the series since Martinsville in April.
Bobby East is here in the No. 33 Ford for his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series attempt, in a third truck out of the Roush Racing shops.
Frank Wilson is again with us in the No. 27 Chevrolet.
Mike Wallace has been tabbed to run the No. 12 Toyota this weekend, replacing Robert Huffman.
Ken Schrader is entered in his own No. 52 Chevrolet.
Bill Lester's No. 22 Toyota this week carries a distinctive and sharp purple and yellow Crown Royal color combination.
Michael Faulk is entered in the No. 53 Dodge attemptng to make his first NCTS start this evening.

Rain is back, jet dryers parked
08-05-2005 10:41 am
The skies have opened up once again just as the jet dryers were starting to make headway on the track surface. The jet dryers have shut down and are parked on the backstretch waiting for the rains to stop so they can get back on the speedway and get the track ready for practice.

Pole Streak
08-05-2005 11:03 am
Looking at the record books, there has been quite a streak of repeat pole winners at IRP. Mike Skinner won back to back poles in 1995 and 1996 and then went on to lead every lap to win both races. In 2000 and 2001, Joe Ruttman won back to back poles, and won the race in 2000. In 2002 and 2003, Terry Cook won consecutive poles and won the 2002 race. With last year's Bud Pole award on the shelf at home, Jack Sprague sure looks like the historical favorite to put his truck in P1 following this afternoon's qualifying session.

Jimmy Spencer will have the services of TruckSeries.com staff writer and noted author John Close this evening. Close, who has written an acclaimed book on former NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, will be atop the roof spotting for the driver of the No. 2 Dodge this evening.
A lot of NASCAR flavor at last night's USAC race
08-05-2005 11:32 am
There were a lot of familiar faces at last night's USAC Silver Crown Series race here at IRP. On the track, several drivers with ties to the NCTS were in competition, including former series regulars Jason Leffler, Carl Edwards, and former series champion Mike Bliss, and former race winner Kasey Kahne. Last night's winner Bobby East is entered here this evening attempting to make his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start. Several crew members were in attendance, either helping out with a team or just sitting on the sidelines having a good time watching. Former series driver and former IRP top-5 finisher Lonnie Rush was spotted on pit road, as was NASCAR R&D guru Gary Nelson.
Setzer's lead biggest since...
08-05-2005 11:39 am
How big is Dennis Setzer's points lead? His advantage over second place Ted Musgrave is 158 points, which is the largest lead any driver has had over second place in the series standings since the end of the 2000 season. Following the last race of the 2000 season, champion Greg Biffle was 230 points ahead of runner-up Kurt Busch. The all-time largest lead in series history was 290 points, when Biffle led Mike Wallace following the Dover event.
Raindrops keep falling...
08-05-2005 1:04 pm
Here's the latest Weather Channel radar shot of Indianapolis:
Still in holding pattern
08-05-2005 1:18 pm
The raindrops are still gently falling here at IRP, and we are still on hold waiting for the weather to break so we can get on the track. We haven't heard anything from NASCAR on schedule changes, and we will keep you posted as soon as we hear anything.
IRP Weather
08-05-2005 1:22 pm
With the rain in the area giving us all fits here at IRP, we have gone to great lengths to find out what the scoop is with the weather and when it is expected to move out.
Local weather forecasters say the front that was to the south of Indianapolis drifted a little farther to the north than was expected and brought the rain we have here now. They are still saying the weather will move out for the evening, but our schedule will obviously be dramatically impacted by the weather. Still no word on if practice and/or qualifying has been canceled, and we'll let you know as soon as any announcement is made.
Moving the transporters out now
08-05-2005 1:29 pm
NASCAR has decided to move the transporters out of the infield now before the ground gets any softer if we receive any more substantial rainfall. The teams in the past have operated out of their trailers in the infield through practice and qualifying, but with the weather throwing us a knuckleball here NASCAR has wisely gotten the trucks out of the infield now. There is a lot of mud coming from the infield across the track at the back gate, but the track crews will get the track up to snuff before we put trucks on the track.
What to do in the rain?
08-05-2005 1:33 pm
What does everyone do when rain brings all track activity to a screeching halt?
Most teams have congregated under their tents on pit road and are doing some good old fashioned bench racing. Many trucks are on pit road parked in their stalls totally covered, giving the guys a semi-welcome break to catch their breath and maybe even relax for a couple of minutes.
Some pit stalls have seen some standing water develop and crew members are out with brooms and rollers trying to get their stall dry in case we do have a break in the weather in the near future and we put trucks on the track.
Most drivers have headed outside the gates and are taking it easy in their motor coaches. We were able to track down several of them before they snuck outside to wait out the weather and will have some exclusive audio clips posted shortly.
Fire pumper to the backstretch!
08-05-2005 1:40 pm
Ever seen a track crew purposely dump thousands of gallons of water on to a race track? We are about to here at IRP. They have brought in a fire truck to pump water on the backstretch where the transporters were crossing the track. They have a frontloader now scraping all of the excess mud off the aspalt and then will come in and wash it down with some water to finish up the project.
There's a window over Terre Haute...
08-05-2005 2:07 pm
If you've ever heard the broadcasts from Indianapolis Motor Speedway during rain delays, you've inevitably heard one of the guys in the booth say "there's a window over Terre Haute," which 99 times out of 100 indicates clear weather is heading towards the Indianapolis area in the very near future. Well, IRP track announcer Pat Sullivan took one look at the latest radar and said those famous words, and indeed there is a window of clear weather heading this way. The track crew is still diligently working on the backstretch trying to get the mud removed so once we do get the track dry we have a clean surface. It's still going to be a while to get the track dried once the rain totally stops, but everyone here is giving it a 110% effort to get the track ready once that happens.
Dryers back on track!
08-05-2005 2:25 pm
The rain has slowed to barely a sprinkle, and NASCAR and IRP personnel have closed all the gates and put the track drying equipment back on the racetrack. In a best case scenario, it takes a little over an hour to an hour and a half to get the track dry, and we will keep you abreast of the process over course of the next 30-45 minutes.
We're going to take the TruckSeries.com microphones back to the garage to try to get you some more interviews with the drivers, so keep it locked on to TrackSideLive!
Beware of big men with tape!
08-05-2005 2:28 pm
For some of the more diminutive members of the NCTS community, it is imperitive to always keep on the good side of some of the bigger guys in the garage area, especially in a wet and rainy day when they have nothing to do! Why, do you ask? Well, if you don't, this is what could happen:
Bud Pole Qualifying Cancelled
08-05-2005 3:19 pm
Qualifying for tonight's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Power Stroke 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park has been canceled due to inclement weather and the field set by the Rule Book. Championship leader Dennis Setzer and No. 2-ranked Ted Musgrave will line up on the front row of the 36-truck field with 2004 series champion Bobby Hamilton, John Andretti and Ron Hornaday Jr. filling out the top five.
Defending race winner Chad Chaffin will start from the 32nd position. Other IRP winners in the field are Hornaday, Terry Cook, Mike Skinner and Jack Sprague.
Six trucks among an entry of 42 teams failed to make the race including the Roush Racing Ford in which USAC National Midget champion Bobby East was expected to make his series debut. East won Thursday night's Silver Crown race at IRP.
Tonight's race, being broadcast live by SPEED Channel, MRN and XM Satellite radio, is scheduled for an 8:45 p.m. (ET) start. NASCAR officials remain hopeful the .686-mile oval can be dried to give drivers a pre-race practice session.
Bliss To Run 5 Truck Races
08-05-2005 3:29 pm
2002 Craftsman Truck Series Champion Mike Bliss and Concord, North Carolina based MRD Motorsports have agreed to race in 5 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this season. Bliss, driver of the Nextel Cup Series No. 0 Chevrolet will perform double duty in the MRD Motorsports No. 06 Chevrolet Silverado at companion races with the Nextel Cup Series - scheduled races will be Bristol, Richmond, Atlanta, Texas and Homestead.

Rain again stopped; dryers back on track
08-05-2005 3:54 pm
We had a short shower about 30 minutes ago that forced the track drying equipment to come to a stop, but the shower has abated and we're inching closer to the start of practice for the Power Stroke Diesel 200. The jets have already blown the top groove dry through turns three and four, down the frontstretch and into turns one and two. Again, a best case scenario has us about 60-90 minutes away from a hot track.
Engines humming
08-05-2005 4:00 pm
For the first time today, the teams have started to fire the engines to start to build some temperature in the fluids, check timing, and get ready to head on to the racetrack.
The fans are also starting to make their way into the Indianapolis Raceway Park grandstands as we are getting closer and closer to the first on track action of the day.
Sun shining through the clouds
08-05-2005 4:06 pm
The sun is starting to peek through the clouds for the first time all afternoon, which is starting to help dry the track even more. The frontstretch appears to be mostly dry but the turns are still a touch damp. IRP has three jet dryers out on the track, and we should have a raceable surface here in just a matter of minutes.
Starter on the stand, spotters upstairs
08-05-2005 4:22 pm
The NCTS starter has climbed into the flagstand, and the spotters have headed upstairs to the spotter's stand and we are just moments away from the start of the practice for the Power Stroke Diesel 200.
Track's dry! Let's go racin'!
08-05-2005 4:28 pm
NASCAR officials have stopped the jet dryers and we are just a few short moments away from getting practice underway.
"We're looking good, just a few spots along the seams alongside the groove and we're good to go," was the call on the NASCAR radio.
Practice just a few moments away
08-05-2005 4:42 pm
We are just a few moments away from the start of practice, which will run from 5-6 pm ET.
The trucks are lined up on pit road ready to go, and we'll have all the news for you as it happens. Keep it locked on to TruckSeries.com for all the news from IRP leading up to tonight's Power Stroke Diesel 200.
Practice is on!
08-05-2005 4:46 pm
The geen flag has just waved over the Indianapolis Raceway Park for a heated hour of practice. First onto the speedway was Timothy Peters, followed in short order by Mike Skinner, Ron Hornaday, Johnny Benson, and Todd Kluever. Look for a busy 60 minutes as this is the only time the teams will have on the track before we go racing this evening.
They Said It, Prac No. 1
08-05-2005 4:50 pm
Jimmy Spencer, No. 2 Dodge: "I am going to run in the brakes and take it easy."
David Starr, No. 75 Chevrolet: "We need to get it a little bit better. I just need a little help off the center."

Cook fighting a gear problem
08-05-2005 5:07 pm
Terry Cook just made his first hot laps of the session, but his team spent the entire time he was on the track trying to find an exact replacement for the rear end gear under his truck. Cook, the 2002 winner here at IRP, has felt a vibration under the rear end and rather than try to race with a questionable part, they are opting to be safe than sorry.
"We don't have anything to worry about Terry," said crew chief Rick Gay. "We are as good as anyone through the corners and we're 12th on the sheet. We'll get the gear changed quick and get you back out."

Clean and Green
08-05-2005 5:28 pm
We've been incident free so far through the one and only practice for the Power Stroke Diesel 200.
Mnay drivers have been telling their crews about tires "chattering" through the corners, which indicates they are not gripping the track properly and sliding across the pavement causing a push condition.
Terry Cook's crew has completed the gear change and he is back on the speedway.
TommyRaz Motorsports Not Dampened by IRP DNQ
08-05-2005 5:52 pm
Although rain foiled Casey Kingsland's attempt to run the No. 91 Speed Zone Energy Drink Dodge Ram in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Power Stroke Diesel 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park tonight, August 5 th, 2005, TommyRaz Motorsports is pleased with the outpouring of support for Nevada Child Seekers and the interest in bringing missing child Alexander "Chino" Laurel home safely. The two-year old boy is missing from Nevada and is believed to be heading towards Illinois.
TommyRaz Motorsports will remain at the track with an entry for the NASCAR Busch Series Kroger 200, Benefiting Riley Hospital for Children on August 6th, 2005 with Wayne Edwards from Shepherdsville, KY piloting the No. 91 Speed Zone Energy Drink Dodge Intrepid.
"We are disappointed that Casey could not show his talent here today," said team manager Roger Kingsland. "The Speed Zone Energy Drink Dodge Ram was fast in testing. We will set our sights on Bristol."

Trucks rolling through tech
08-05-2005 7:02 pm
The trucks are now rolling through NASCAR tech inspection and being pushed to the grid. Tracy Hines was the first to pass tech, with Ron Hornaday, Brad Keselowski and David Starr soon to follow. When they are gridded backed into the front stretch wall, allowing the fans an unprecedented opportunity to get up close and personal with the trucks.
Blue skies above
08-05-2005 7:05 pm
After a truly miserable morning and early afternoon, the evening is turning out to be very pleasant here at IRP. Temperatures are in the low to mid 80s, and although the humidity is quite a bit higher than was promised by the weather people, there is a nice gentle breeze blowing from turns three and four across the track to turns one and two. By the time the sun goes down, it should be a perfect night for short track racing.
Irwin's birthday
08-05-2005 7:07 pm
Today would have marked the 36th birthday for the late Kenny Irwin. Irwin was an Indianapolis native, and was the 1997 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year before moving on and earning the Rookie of the Year title in the NASCAR Winston/Nextel Cup Series. Irwin was fatally injured in a practice accident in July 2000 at New Hampshire International Speedway.
Keselowskis smiling big
08-05-2005 7:10 pm
There are a lot of smiles in the K-Automotive pits this afternoon. Not only did Brad Keselowski have a stellar run in practice here this afternoon, ending the session in third, his older brother Brian qualified third for this evening's ARCA Re/Max Series race at Lake Erie (PA) Speedway.

Intros done...race up next!
08-05-2005 8:17 pm
The drivers have been introduced to the large and wildly enthusiastic crowd here at IRP and are finishing up their parade lap around the track in the back of a fleet of bright yellow Ford Power Stroke Diesel Super Duty pickups. We have the conclusion of the opening ceremonies up next -- the invocation and the Star Spangled Banner -- and then we get the command to fire the engines and go racing for 200 of the most hard fought laps we'll see all season long.
We recommend you head to the fridge, grab your favorite cool beverage, grab a snack and sit down in front of the computer locked on to TrackSideLive! with your TV tuned to Speed Channel and get ready! We'll have all the action for you as it happens, and we'll bring you exclusive post-race coverage you won't find anywhere else. Keep it locked right here!
A couple things before we go green...
08-05-2005 8:30 pm
Pit road speed is 35 miles per hour...the caution truck will run 40 miles per hour this evening...the minimum speed to remain in competition tonight is 25.59 seconds...the teams must start on the tires with which they qualified...the teams have four sets of tires to use over the course of the event, and can use them however they chose...the field was lined up according to the NCTS rule book, putting point leader Dennis Setzer on the pole and second place point man Ted Musgrave outside the front row.
Power Stroke Diesel 200 Race Updates 1-10
08-05-2005 8:36 pm
10. Lap 25 - The famous Andretti luck in Indianapolis carries over to IRP as well as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Andretti's right front goes down entering turn three and he makes contact with the retaining wall. He has driven the truck back to the attention of his crew, but they have pulled it behind the wall.
9. Lap 17 - Andretti slides into the wall in turn one and damages the nose of his machine. He has a moderate right front tire rub. NASCAR is keeping an eye on it.
8. Lap 15 - Intense racing up front as Hornaday now pressures Musgrave for second and Spencer races Andretti for fifth. Peters comes to pit road with a flat left front. Spencer pushes Andretti up the track in turn two to take the position.
7. Lap 9 - Setzer leads Musgrave, Andretti, Hornaday, Spencer, Hamilton, Craven, Reutimann, Crafton, Cook, Skinner Sprague, Benson, Starr, Bodine, Crawford, Kluever, Gaughan, Park, Pressleu, Peters, Lester, Wallace, Hines, Miller, Fedewa, Chaffin, Renshaw, Montgomery, Sutton, Shcrader, Ferguson, Almirola, Whitt and Bailey to the green.
6. Lap 3 - Accident down the backstretch involves Jack Bailey and Brandon Whitt, who went for a long wild slide into turn three. Tracy Hines made contact with Bailey's truck and damaged his nose, and Brad Keselowski also has some damage to the nose of his machine and has brought his truck to the pits for repairs. Keselowski is going behind the wall to repair a busted radiator. It is a disappointing start for the driver who was third fastest in this afternoon's practice.
5. Start - Musgrave fights hard on the bottom and runs side by side, but Setzer leads at the stripe. The field has completed the first lap cleanly.
4. Montgomery's team fixed a loose coil wire and he's rejoined the field at the tail of the pack for the start.
3. Chase Montgomery's truck is being pushed through turns one and twoo as it has not fired on the grid. He is bringing the truck to the pits prior to the start and his crew will dive under the hood to diagnose the problem. Two pace laps remain before we go green.
2. Trucks are rolling. No drivers are falling to the back for the start here this evening.
1. Engines have been cranked and the trucks are idling on the front stretch before rolling out on their pace laps. As the pole sitter, Dennis Setzer has elected to take the green flag from the outside lane here this evening.

Points summary
08-05-2005 11:24 pm
While the front of the pack in the NCTS championship standings did not change significantly, there has been some significant shakeups in the remainder of the top-10 points positions.
Dennis Setzer continues to lead Ted Musgrave, but has extended his lead to 227 points with third place Bobby Hamilton now 229 back. Ron Hornaday sits fourth, 273 points back with Jimmy Spencer fifth 305 points out of the lead.
David Reutimann picked up one spot and now sits sixth in points, while Matt Crafton leapfrogged from ninth to seventh with his fourth-place run. Reutimann is 350 points back, while Crafton is just eleven points behind sixth. Terry Cook holds serve to maintain eighth 374 points out of the lead. Ricky Craven is the biggest mover in the top-10, but unfortunately it is in the wrong direction. He drops three positions here tonight, now sitting ninth and is 388 points in arrears. David Starr rounds out the top-10, 415 points off the leader.

Putting a period on it
08-05-2005 11:50 pm
Well, the teams are loading their equipment up, the fans are slowly moving from the parking lot to the highway, and we are ready to move on to round 16 next Saturday afternoon in Nashville.
Dennis Setzer continues his mastery of the middle section of the 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule by picking up his fourth win of the season. Todd Kluever also maintains his hot streak with his second second-place finish of the season, but was a little disappointed that he wasn't the one spraying champagne here tonight. An ill-timed caution sent Kluever back behind Setzer just as he was making a potentially race-winning move off turn two.
While only Setzer, Kluever, Ron Hornaday, Matt Crafton, Jimmy Spencer, and Rick Crawford were the only lead lap finishers, it didn't obscure terrific runs by Robert Pressley, Brendan Gaughan and Aric Almirola. Pressley's seventh place run is his best finish of the season, and he pulled off a last lap pass on Gaughan to get it. Gaughan ran hard all night long to pick up his second straight top-10 run, while Almirola picked up his first career top-10 finish in just his second start.
Jack Sprague was ninth tonight, but two pit road pass-thru penalties kept one of the only trucks that might have challenged Setzer trapped a lap down in the closing stages. Sprague was not the only one to have been caught pushing the envelope on pit road; others getting nabbed for excessive speed included Mike Wallace and Mike Skinner, while Johnny Benson had to come back to the pits to remove a wedge wrench from his truck.
It was a frustrating night for Brad Keselowski and John Andretti. Keselowski was third fastest in the pre-race practice session and was making his way through the field early when a wreck blocked the track in front of him and he contacted another truck, knocking the radiator out. He spent nearly 60 laps in the pits making repairs before returning to action and picking up two positions in the finishing order. Andretti slid into the turn one wall early on and knocked the right front fender in on the tire. A few laps later, the rub proved to be too much and the tire went down sending him hard into the turn three wall and out of the race. Andretti ended up last in the 36-truck field.
We will rejoin you next Friday from the Nashville Superspeedway as we start preparations for the Toyota Tundra 200. Until then, good night everybody.
