Good Morning from Texas
06-09-2005 10:03 am
Good morning from the second-largest sports stadium in the world, the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway. There was a thin layer of clouds overhead when we woke up this morning, but it's burning off and the searing hot sun is making life unbearable in the garage area. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid to uppper 90s here this afternoon, and with high humidity showers are always a possiblility. We will keep you updated on everything going on here in Texas, including pesky Mother Nature, throughout the day as we practice and qualify for round nine of the 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season, the Chex 400k. Keep your browsers locked on to TrackSideLive! presented by Team ASE, right here at TruckSeries.com, your source for all the news you can use from Texas.

Speed Adds Andretti to Texas Team
06-09-2005 11:21 am
John Andretti will join the Speed Channel broadcast team as a color analyst for the Chex 400 tomorrow night. Andretti has served as an analyst before, notably for the Brickyard 400 in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.
“Usually I am sitting behind the steering wheel so I guess this will be a little further away than usual,” said Andretti, “but I am really looking forward to it. I’ve worked some with SPEED on its television programs in the past and I am a regular contributor to WIBC Radio (Indianapolis) but this will be my first shot as a color analyst for a live race broadcast.”
Andretti has never driven in the Truck Series before, but said he'd like to give it a shot.
“I’d love to try it sometime because it is great racing,” Andretti said. “I love the side-by-side stuff and the close finishes. I can’t think of a racer anywhere who wouldn’t want to try the Truck series.”
New Paint
06-09-2005 11:27 am
Several drivers are here this weekend with some new paint on their rides.
Bobby Hamilton is here back in the No. 04 Tech-Net colors this weekend.
Eric Norris is entered in the Green Light Racing No. 07 Pavestone Chevrolet.
Johnny Sauter is in the Billy Ballew Motorsports No. 15 Chevrolet this weekend, which is back to it's traditional orange look here this weekend. Chex has signed on for a one-race sponsorship.
Bill Lester is in the No. 22 US Army Toyota here today, which is painted virtually identical to the Army Cup car.
Chad Chaffin is in a brilliantly colored red-and-blue No. 30 Toyota this weekend sponsored by Edy's Ice Cream.
Dennis Setzer is back in the red and silver No. 46 Chevrolet Siverado Z71Chevrolet this weekend.
Todd Kluever is running anothe race in the white and blue Shell Rotella T colors on his No. 50 Ford.
Robert Pressley is in the No. 59 Con-Way Trucking Dodge this weekend.
Steve Park's No. 62 Dodge has a slightly different look to it with the South Padre Island colors on it.
Double Duty
06-09-2005 11:33 am
Several drivers are attempting double duty of one type or another this weekend.
The driver going the farthest distance between his two rides this weekend is four-time Texas NCTS winner Brendan Gaughan. Gaughan will relieve 2002 NCTS Champion Mike Bliss in the No. 0 NetZero Chevrolet at Pocono during practice on Friday and will be standing by on Sunday in case Bliss needs relief.
Ron Hornaday and Johnny Sauter will be doing double duty this weekend as well, commuting back and forth between Texas and Nashville. Hornaday's regular ride is in the No. 6 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet for Kevin Harvick, and will be filling the seat of the No.32 Winfuel Chevrolet for Braun Racing in the Busch Series race this weekend. Sauter's regular ride is the No. 1 Dodge in the Busch Series and will be taking the reins of the No. 15 Chevrolet this weekend, the truck that has won the last two NCTS races with Kyle Busch in the seat at Charlotte and Dover.
The guy with the shortest commute this weekend may be the one making the biggest jump, so to speak. Jimmy Kite is going from one side of the garage area to the other here in Texas, but is going from a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series ride to an IRL Indy Car Series ride. He will again wheel the No. 91 Ethanol Hemelgarn Racing Dallara/Toyota, the same car he drove in the 89th Indianapolis 500 two weeks ago.
Entry List Updates
06-09-2005 11:42 am
There are some changes to our "normal" entry list here this week.
Jimmy Kite is back in the No. 06 MRD Motorsports Chevrolet.
Eric Norris is in the No. 07 Green Light Racing Chevrolet, while Johnny Chapman is in the team's No. 08 Chevrolet.
Johnny Sauter is in the No. 15 Billy Ballew Motorsports Chevrolet.
Blake Mallory is the driver of the No. 24 Mighty Motorsports Chevrolet this weekend.
Tom DeLoach has taken over the ownership role of the No. 38 Toyota, now fielded by Red Horse Racing. Driver Brandon Whitt's father, Daniel Whitt, had been listed as the owner of what was then called Clean Line Racing.
Clay Rogers made his series debut at Charlotte and impressed Glynnn Motorsports, which has him in the seat of its No. 65 Dodge. The team's usual pilot, Regan Smith, is wheeling its Dodge this weekend in the Busch Series race in Dover.
No one going home...
06-09-2005 11:46 am
There are only 36 drivers and teams listed on the entry list here for the Chex 400, meaning everyone that is here will make the starting line up. The teams that were originally needing to qualify based upon their qualifying speed are as follows:
Jimmy Kite, No. 06 MRD Motorsports Chevrolet
Deborah Renshaw, No. 8 BHR2 Dodge
Shige Hattori, No. 9 Germain-Arnold Racing Toyota
Blake Mallory, No. 24 Mighty Motorsports Chevrolet
Brandon Whitt, No. 38 Red Horse Racing Toyota
Clay Rogers, No. 65 Glynn Motorsports Dodge
TMS Track Records
06-09-2005 11:50 am
Just how fast is Texas Motor Speedway?
The qualifying record is held by Mike Skinner, set last June, with a quick lap of 29.642 seconds/182.174 miles per hour. That lap makes Texas the fourth fastest track on the series schedule, behind only Daytona (187.563 mph, Joe Ruttman, 2000); Charlotte (183.051 mph, Mike Skinner, 2005); and Atlanta (182.735 mph, Rick Crawford, 2005). It is expected that with the softer tire used in 2005 that TMS will leapfrog back over Atlanta and Charlotte and move back into second place on the fastest track charts.
The race record was set last spring by Dennis Setzer, who won with an average speed of 148.959 miles per hour, which is the second-fastest race in NCTS histor, behind only Brendan Gaughan's 154.044 mph average at Michigan in 2003.
Practice about to start...
06-09-2005 12:06 pm
Practice is just seconds away from starting. NASCAR is going through their routine radio checks, ensuring all of the officials can hear and that all of the safety personnel are in place.
A few teams are still working on getting though pre-practice tech inspection. The 30, 59, 08, and 13 trucks are still working on getting their stickers to make it out on track.
Does anybody see any reason we can't go green?
06-09-2005 12:12 pm
That was the question posed on NASCAR's radio just moments ago, and the answer came back a resounding no! We are on track in Texas, with Ron Hornaday and Terry Cook taking the first laps around TMS. We'll have all the news and notes as they happen...keep it locked on to TrackSideLive!

Jimmy Spencer, No. 2 Dodge: "Let's just wait and see what we've got. How fast is everyone else running? How much longer do we have to sit in detention?"

Clean and Green
06-09-2005 1:04 pm
We have about five minutes left to go in Practice 1 and we have been clean and green so far with no incidents or delays.
Teams Struggling to Find Times
06-09-2005 1:10 pm
The teams in the garage area are having a hard time finding out just how fast they are running out on the speedway. They computer scoring monitors have had interference problems since the moment we went green, with most teams not having any usable timing data in their garage stalls. It makes it hard to know how fast you are running, and if the adjustsments you are making are helping or hurting, when you don't have access to the data. NASCAR is recommending teams put out an external antenna and point it towards the timing and scoring tower in hopes of fixing the problem.

Birthplace of the NCTS lost to history after 2005
06-09-2005 4:15 pm
Mesa Marin Speedway, the birthplace of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, will close following the 2005 season. The track hosted several exhbition races for what was then called the NASCAR SuperTruck Series in 1994, and was host to two series races in the first official season, 1995. In addition to being the site of the first ever Truck exhibition race, the first actual truck was built in a shop on the track grounds by Gary Collins, son of track promoter Marion Collins. Mesa Marin hosted nine NCTS races from 1995 to 2003, with Ron Hornaday winning the first and Dennis Setzer winning the last race. Other winners included Randy Tolsma, Rick Carelli, Mike Wallace, and Ted Musgrave.

Craven to have help from the Caped Crusader in Michigan
06-09-2005 5:56 pm
Ricky Craven will have some additional help when we head to Michigan next weekend. He will have Batman on the side panels of the No. 99 Ford as the track and Roush Racing are helping to promote "Batman Begins".
"I am really looking forward to racing the 'Batman Begins' truck at Michigan and hopefully having him there will give us a little extra help," Craven said. "My son is pretty excited about it too and plans to be there to meet one of his favorite super heroes. I'm hoping he can share some of his secrets about how he gets extra speed out of the Batmobile that I can use on my truck. I'm also counting on him to keep some of my competitors at a distance on the track."
Skinner Wins Bud Pole Enroute to Track Record
06-09-2005 9:32 pm
With Mike Skinner breaking his own track record, Bill Davis Racing's Toyota Tundras swept three of the top five starting positions for Friday night's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chex 400K race at Texas Motor Speedway. Skinner, who lapped the 1.5-mile track at 182.174 mph last October, clicked off an even quicker lap Thursday - despite temperatures in the 90s. Skinner's fast lap was 182.902 mph, just .134-second quicker than the 182.076 turned by Rick Crawford's Ford. David Starr, the Bud Pole winner a week ago at Dover International Speedway, took the No. 3 starting position at 181.971.
Skinner's teammates, Johnny Benson and Bill Lesteer, claimed fourth and fifth place slots in the 36-truck field. Benson ran a lap of 181.965 and Lester a lap of 181.677.
Sophomore driver Deborah Renshaw timed into the field in the No. 9 position marking the first time a female driver has qualified among the top 10 in a series race since 1997. Renshaw drives a Dodge prepared by defending series champion Bobby Hamilton. She was the quickest among Dodges competing in the race. Hamilton qualified 31st with defending Chex 400K winner Dennis Setzer 13th.
Shige Hattori, an Indy Racing League veteran at Texas Motor Speedway, was the top qualifying Raybestos rookie contender. Hattori qualified his Toyota in the No. 17 position.

Drivers Meeting Notes
06-10-2005 7:39 pm
Here are the notes from the NCTS Driver/Crew Chief meeting...
NCTS Director Wayne Auton did not go through the usual driver's meeting routing, he kept it short and sweet, giving the bare essentials.
Driver intros are 7:55 pm CT...generators removed at 8 pm CT...the invocation is scheduled for 8:10 pm CT, the Star Spangled Banner at 8:11 pm CT, and the command to start engines for 8:18 pm CT...there will be three pace laps on the initial roll-off...45 miles per hour on pit road, the caution truck will run 55 mph...NASCAR again cautioned drivers if they must come to pit road to avoid an accident they must continually reduce their speed or they may receive a penalty for speeding on pit road...pit road speed starts 150 feet before the first pit box and ends 150 feet past the last pit box...the leader must maintain pace car speed coming to the restart, no reducing speed...the minimum speed is 34.28 seconds..."Drivers, remember, tonight we're asking you to walk across the stage and introduce yourselves, so please remember your names!"...Terry Cook asked what the proceedure was for green flag pit stops, and Auton instructed the drivers to keep all four tires under the white line all the way through turn two before blending into traffic on the backstretch..."Drivers, give yourselves some room out there tonight. This is a long race, 250 miles. You won't win it on the first lap. We have 374 turns to go here tonight, don't lose this race on the first one. These trucks all look really nice when your crews unload them, and we've had to load up a bunch of trucks that have been torn up for no good reason here lately. Don't make your crews burn the midnight oil to make it to Michigan."
Hamilton and Sauter to the back for missing meeting
06-10-2005 7:48 pm
Both Bobby Hamilton and Johnny Sauter will forfeit their starting positions for missing the drivers meeting. Hamiltin was scheduled to start 31st, while Sauter was to roll off 33rd.

Sprague Scores Big Win in Texas
06-11-2005 12:37 am
Jack Sprague fought his way to the front of the field following his final, green flag pit stop to beat Johnny Benson in Friday night's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chex 400K at Texas Motor Speedway. The victory was the first of the season and 25th for the three-time series champion, whose Chevrolet finished 1.286 seconds - about six truck lengths - ahead of Benson's Toyota Tundra. Sprague, who started seventh in the 36-truck field, became the first driver to win at least once in eight different seasons. He averaged 144.844 mph and won $72,850.
Sprague also won the race in 2001 and was fifth a year ago. He led twice including the final nine laps when David Reutimann pitted to give up the top spot.
Dennis Setzer, the 250.5-mile race's defending winner, finished third in a Chevy, followed by Mike Skinner's Toyota and the Chevrolet of Matt Crafton. Skinner was the dominant driver, leading 116 of 167 laps, but faded with handling problems in the late going.
Ron Hornaday Jr., Terry Cook, Clay Rogers, David Star and Reutimann completed the top 10 with 11th place Johnny Sauter also completing all 167 laps.
There were nine lead changes among seven drivers with four cautions consuming 15 laps.
Ted Musgrave continues to hold the championship lead after nine of 25 scheduled events - by 17 points over Ricky Craven. Craven finished 13th and Musgrave 14th.
