Good Morning from Charlotte

05-19-2005  10:01 am

The teams have been busy at work since 7 am ET preparing for the first practice for tomorrow night's Quaker Steak and Lube 200 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The sun is poking through a thin layer of clouds, and though there is a chance of isolated storms to roll through the Charlotte area this afternoon, it is a beautiful morning. Temperatures are expected to reach the low 80s this afternoon before cooling off the the teams start qualifying late this afernoon and into the evening. TruckSeries.com has been walking the garage collecting images and exclusive TrackSideLive! audio clips, so stay locked on right here thoughout the day for continuing updates from LMS.

New colors

05-19-2005  10:05 am

A couple of teams are here sporting new colors this weekend. Dennis Setzer has exchanged the black and silver scheme we have come to know the past two years for a sharp red and silver Silverado Z-71 look this weekend. Kelly Sutton's blue and white Team Copaxone No. 02 has transformed into a white and blue truck, with the colors reversed here in Charlotte. Bill Lester is in the Checkers Drive-Thru colors this weekend, while Regan Smith has traded in the blue No. 65 for red on the Glynn Motorsports Dodge here this weekend.

Charlotte Track Specs

05-19-2005  10:10 am

Lowe's Motor Speedway was built in 1960, and is a 1.5-mile quad-oval with a double dogleg on the frontstretch. The banking in the corners is 24 degrees, with the frontstretch and backstretch both tilted at 5 degrees. The frontstretch is 1,953 feet long, and the backstretch is 1,360 feet in length. The scheduled 134-lap race distance is 201 miles.

The NCTS has raced twice at LMS before, with Ted Musgrave coming home first in the inaugural race in 2003 and Dennis Setzer winning last year. Bill Lester was the initial pole winner in 03, with David Starr taking the top spot in qualifying last season. Lester holds the qualifying record at 175.593 miles per hour/30.753 seconds while Musgrave holds the 201-mile race record at 114.768 miles per hour/1 hour, 46 minutes, 39 seconds.

No race has been won from lower than 8th starting position.

There were a record 13 lead changes in last season's race at LMS.

LMS Track Surface

05-19-2005  10:53 am

LMS track president H. A. "Humpy" Wheeler has long discussed the character of the track surface lovingly, even characterizing the bumps in turns three and four as the "Humpy Bumps".  Well, the track recently underwent a major facelift when the entire 1.5-mile ribbon of asphalt was ground and smoothed.  The "new" surface, while still composed of the same asphalt, is much smoother and offers more grip through the corners, even well off the bottom groove.  Several drivers that tested here several weeks ago believe the track will immediately be ready for two-wide, and in some instances even three-wide racing through the corners.  Drivers also expect speeds to increase dramatically in both qualifying and race conditions, with average speeds expected to be near both Texas and Atlanta.

Upcoming Milestones

05-19-2005  11:22 am

Here are some upcoming NCTS milestones...

The NCTS will celebrate its 250th race June 3rd in Dover. Kelly Sutton will tie the series record for most starts by a female driver at Texas and is scheduled to surpass the previous record, 32, set by Tammy Jo Kirk, at Michigan. Sutton has less than $20,000 to go to become the female with the highest money earned figure in series history. Terry Cook will make his 200th series start at Michigan, while Michigan will also be the 200th race for ThorSport Racing. K-Automotive will make it's 250th series start at Michigan.

Busy Week for Hines on Tap

05-19-2005  12:14 pm

Tracy Hines has a busy week on tap after he leaves Charlotte. He will race a USAC Sprint Car at Anderson Speedway on Wednesday, then spend the next couple of days practicing and qualifying for the Little 500, also at Anderson, which runs the night before the Indianapolis 500. The Little 500 is a 500-lap race an a tight quarter mile, with a 33-car starting field that starts in 11 rows of three. It is Hines' first attempt in the Little 500; he is a regular competitor in the USAC Midget "Night Before the 500" at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Practice on tap in mere moments

05-19-2005  12:53 pm

The first of two practices for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is just moments away. Keep it locked right here to TrackSideLive! for timing and scoring updates and all the on-track news from the Lowe's Motor Speedway as it happens...

Practice is on!

05-19-2005  1:00 pm

Green is out! The first trucks on the track were the 77, 12, 16, 88 and the 8. Within the first minute of practice, 20 trucks have been on the speedway.

It didn't take long...

05-19-2005  1:01 pm

With the new surface here at LMS, everyone anticipated high speeds and a new qualifying speed record. If practice is any indication, expect to see the track record demolished in qualifying later this evening. Ted Musgrave has already exceeded the 178 mile per hour barrier and is close to breaking 180, and we are less than five minutes into the session.

Kite to Do Unique Double Duty, Charlotte and Indy

05-19-2005  1:08 pm

Earlier this week Jimmy Kite was named to replace injured driver Paul Dana in the No. 91 Ethanol Hemelgarn Racing Dallara/Toyota/Firestone at the 89th Indianapolis 500.  Kite has four Indy 500 starts to his credit, with a best finish of 11th in 1998.  His most recent start at Indy came in 2003 when he placed 13th for PDM Racing.  Kite is a Raybestos Rookie in the Craftsman Truck Series.

Jimmy Kite, No. 06 Chevrolet:

“It was last minute, obviously.  We were actually going by there to see some friends and hang out and they said ‘Hey, please spend a couple more days here because you might be in the car.’ When the opportunity came up they asked me if I’m interested and I jumped on it.  It’s a great team, great opportunity.  It’s going to be a lot of fun if I can get the truck in the show, run the race tomorrow night and then go up there Saturday and put that car in the show at the Indy 500.  It would be a fun couple of days.”

What is your schedule been like the past two days?

“The last couple of days I’ve been up there getting fitted for the car.  Yesterday was my first time on the track practicing.  We flew down here last night and we’ll be here today.  I actually fly back tonight because I have to practice tomorrow then tomorrow night we’re flying back down here for the race and I’ve got to be back Saturday morning to qualify.  The next couple of days are going to be pretty hectic and stressed out.  The alternative is to sit there and watch it on TV so I’ll stick with being stressed out .”

How was the Indy car in practice?

“Yeah, we were.  So far the most stressing part was trying to get a jet to fly me back and forth.  A guy by the name of Jim Mills with Turbines Inc. saw what my situation was and hooked me up with a deal.  He’s going to get me back and forth and so far that’s been the most stressing part.  I owe him probably the biggest thanks of anything right now.”

What adjustments do you have to make as a driver going back and forth between the Indy car and the Truck?

“Obviously they’re not the same but the good part is that at least we’re at a track where we’re almost flat anyway.  If we were going to a Martinsville or something I’d be a little bit worried about running into the corner too hard.  But you’re almost flat here so it shouldn’t be too much of a carryover.  I’m sure when I go into the corner today and the thing rolls over it’s going to be a little spooky because that Indy Car move at all.”

How fast do you need to run with the Indy car to make the field?

“We’re going to try to get in Saturday.  We’re guessing that a 218 will be pretty safe.  We don’t know if there’s going to be bumping or not.  We ran a 219.2 yesterday so we’re pretty good.  We want to make it a little bit better just to make sure that we’re safe.  For today, I’ve had to flip the switch and worry about truck mode and what’s going to get us in here then tomorrow morning flip the switch back and worry about that up there.”

How important is the Indy 500 to you?

“It’s where I got my shots out of USAC.  This will be my fifth 500 if I run it.  It’s a huge deal.  I’m looking forward to this [truck race] and getting to run at Lowe’s on all-start weekend.  This is a huge weekend too.  I’m definitely not going to take anything away from it down here because I’m just as happy to be here.”

How was your test here a couple of weeks ago?

“I can’t really compare it off of last year.  It’s still pretty rough.  I talked to everybody and they said it still has Charlotte characteristics.  We only got to run a couple of laps because of the rain.  We’ll go out and work on it today and see what we’ve got.”

You have some momentum coming out of Gateway.

“In the two races that we’ve run so far, we’ve tried to make two and we’ve made two.  We’re on a roll and we hope that we don’t break that string.  We’ve just got to get it in the show.  I’ll know after the first practice session if we’re good or bad.”

Kite Spins to Bring Out First Red

05-19-2005  1:17 pm

Jimmy Kite backed his truck in turn 2 and drove his machine back into the pits.  The track crew is out cleaning and inspecting the track.  No immediate word on how bad the damage is or if it can be repaired.  A rundown is to follow, we will follow up on the Kite situation...

At the same time, Shige Hattori got loose and slid up the track and pancaked the right side. Both drivers came back to the pits under power and neither needed to make a trip to the care center.

Stewart's Team Changing Engines

05-19-2005  4:12 pm

Tony Stewart's No. 47 Chevrolet is nosed out of the garage stall while the Morgan-Dollar team is busy swapping the engine.  No word on why the team is pulling the engine, but Stewart was 34th in Final Practice, and based upon those times, would have missed the field if the practice times were used to determine the starting lineup. He was seventh fastest of the 12 drivers that must make the field based on qualifying speed.

Hines Dropped the Fluid

05-19-2005  4:16 pm

While TrackSideLive was left guessing at which truck dropped the fluid to bring out the sole red flag in the second practice, a quick trip through garage and a tell-tale strip of speedy-dry behind the No. 13 Chevrolet of Tracy Hines answered the question.  "We had an oil line vibrate loose," Hines said.  "The truck's good, the lines are tight, and they've got it all cleaned up."

Weather an issue?

05-19-2005  5:42 pm

There are reports of a significant storm moving through the Charlotte area dropping heavy rains, possibly even hail, at a rate of 2 inches an hour.  The skies have clouded over at Lowe's Motor Speedway, but at this point everything remains dry and we are on target for a 7 pm ET start for Bud Pole Qualifying.  Keep it right here at TruckSeries.com for Live! Bud Pole Qualifying, and locked on to TrackSideLive! for weather updates and post-qualifying coverage.

Skinner Speeds to Pole at Lowe's

Skinner Speeds to Second Pole of Season at Lowe’s

Mike Skinner smashed the track record on the new Lowe’s Motor Speedway pavement to claim his second pole of the 2005 season for the Quaker Steak and Lube 200 on Thursday evening. Skinner’s lap of 29.500 seconds is 183.051 miles per hour around the 1.5-mile quad-oval, and the speed makes the Charlotte track the second fastest on the series schedule.

With Skinner’s 19th career pole position in his hip pocket, it knocked Rick Crawford to the outside of the front row. Crawford, the pole winner in Atlanta earlier in the season, ran a quick lap of 29.654 seconds/182.100 miles per hour and will line up outside the front row in Friday night’s race.

Kyle Busch took over the driving duties for Billy Ballew Motorsports earlier this week and didn’t disappoint by taking the third spot with a 29.696 second lap. Busch was the quickest in the final pre-qualifying practice and picked up nearly four-tenths of a second on his qualifying lap, but couldn’t hold on to become the youngest pole winner in series history.

Robert Huffman was one of two drivers to break the 180 mile per hour barrier in practice and will line up fourth on the grid with a 29.729 second lap. Rounding out the top-5 is 2003 LMS pole winner Bill Lester with a lap of 29.785 seconds.

Chad Chaffin qualified sixth, Jimmy Spencer seventh, rookie Shigeaki Hattori eighth, Todd Bodine ninth and Ron Hornaday rounded out the top-10.

The entire starting field eclipsed David Starr’s previous track record of 178.577 miles per hour. The speeds increased dramatically due to the asphalt at Lowe’s Motor Speedway being ground down and the bumps around the speedway being dramatically reduced.

Twelve drivers needed to time their way into the field based upon qualifying speeds. Six made the field, while the other six loaded up and went home. Hattori was the highest qualifier of that group, with Tony Stewart, Regan Smith, rookie Clay Rogers, Ken Schrader, and Brendan Gaughan also making the field. Missing the race are Jimmy Kite, who had a crash in the first practice, Deborah Renshaw, Nick Tucker, David Ragan, Wayne Edwards, and Mike Harmon.

No Rain Imminent

05-20-2005  5:15 pm

Looking at the radar, there is green (rain) in the area but it all appears to be well away from the Concord, N.C. area. There is a small shower near Hickory, but that is well north of here. There is another small cell to the west, but it is at least 120 miles away at this point. It would appear that we are a go to race tonight, but we will keep checking and updating the weather periodically.

Cup Experience in the Top-10

05-20-2005  5:19 pm

A quick look at the top-10 in NCTS championship standings shows 9 drivers with NASCAR Nextel Cup experience and one lone standout with "just" NASCAR Camping World Truck Series experience.

The Cuppers:

1. Bobby Hamilton, 368 starts
2. Ted Musgrave, 305 starts
3. Ricky Craven, 278 starts
4. Jimmy Spencer, 467 starts
5. Ron Hornaday, 45 starts
6. Dennis Setzer, 7 starts
7. Todd Bodine, 255 starts
8. Jack Sprague, 24 starts
10. Johnny Benson, 268 starts

These nine drivers represent 2010 NNCS starts, with 7 wins spread among them (Hamilton, 4; Craven, 2; Spencer, 2; Benson, 1).

The lone "Trucker"? Matt Crafton, who sits ninth in points. He has 103 NCTS starts, with no attempts in the NNCS or the NASCAR Busch Series.

Drivers Meeting Notes

05-20-2005  6:09 pm

Here are the notes from the NCTS Drivers Meeting, which just concluded...

Quaker Steak and Lube presented Tony Stewart with a birthday cake in front of the crowd to celebrate his "29th" birthday. NCTS Director Wayne Auton volunteered Jimmy Spencer to sing a solo version of "Happy Birthday", to which he responded "those guys over there (Diamond Rio, who will perform tonight's National Anthem) can sing and I will lip sync!".

Pit road speed will begin 215 feet before the first pit box and run through 160 feet past the last pit box. Cones have been placed at each point, so drivers must maintain that speed cone to cone. The pit road speed is 45 miles per hour, while the caution speed on the track is 55 miles per hour. The minimum lap speed is 32.87 miles per hour. The restart point is the double red line outside the wall in turn four.

Raybestos Rookie Quotes: Qualifying

05-20-2005  7:32 pm

Shige Hattori, No. 9 Toyota: “First of all, I have to say thanks to all my guys.  I hit the wall in practice everyone on my team did a good job.  I tried my best.  I appreciate all my guys.  They did a good job and I’m so happy.”

How did you pick up so much on the second lap?

“The first lap a slid just a little bit and the second lap I did flat out.  The handling was pretty good.  I’m so appreciative to all my guys because they did a good job.  I’m still not comfortable .  I still don’t feel comfortable.  I was getting used to it every lap in the practice.”

Regan Smith, No. 65 Dodge: “Not bad, just a little bit too tight in 3 and 4.  We couldn’t have turned a .69, I don’t care what we did.  That’s a good lap; he must have been pretty well hung out.  We’ve got it a little bit free right now so we should race really good tomorrow night.  There’s more grip right now.  I was just a little bit free in 1 and 2, which I think will be good for tomorrow night.  I was a little bit tight in 3 and 4.  We’ll just keep working on it.”

Sean Murphy, No. 07 Chevrolet: "It was all right.  We had some handling issues in qualifying.  We bottomed out in 1 and 2 and got 3 and 4 a bit better from practice.  We thought we could have backed up our practice time but it bottomed out pretty hard that last lap and I had to back peddle it to stay out of the fence.  It’s a 200-mile race so we can get it back by then.  We were real good in long runs today in practice.  Our times would stay basically stay the same on long runs.  Some of the guys were fast but they kind of fell back.  We’ll have to wait and see tomorrow what we can run in the race.  We were decent enough in practice and I thought we had a top-20 truck in qualifying.”

Jimmy Kite, No. 06 Chevrolet: “I was flat on that second lap and it’s the best lap that we’ve run all day.  It bottomed out real bad in 3 and 4.  I had to chase it up the bank and bring it back down and I know it cost me a couple tenths doing that.  We’re going to need a lot of hope on our side to get in but we’ll see what happens.”  WHAT HAPPENED IN PRACTICE?  “The truck was real tight on me down in 3 and 4 and it was real good in 1 and 2.  We tried to put a spring in to stiffen it up and it was better in 3 and 4 but it got a little loose on me in 1 and 2.  I saved it, overcorrected, I saved it, and I got in the loose stuff and went up and hit the wall with the right rear.  It was just enough to make the guys work extra hard.”

Could you tell if the wrinkle in the fender affected your run?

“One of these veterans could probably tell you, but I’m still learning these things.  I still don’t know what’s right and what’s wrong.  I still have a lot to learn.”

Shige Hattori Press Conference

“I was so happy with my qualifying because I hit the wall in practice.  Our team did a good job and they fixed my Tundra truck.  My crew chief did a good job.  I hit the wall in turn 4 and damaged my right front and the right side was damaged.  We tested here a couple of weeks ago but it was rained after we made only 30 laps.”

Comment on the track surface.

“Everybody said this year is different.  Last year was bumpy and this year is much smoother.  I didn’t drive last year, this is my first time and to me it’s pretty good now.”

Timothy Peters, No. 4 Dodge: “I’ll take that.  The Bailey’s Dodge has been running well all day.  I’m just trying to learn this place and I’m real happy with the way everything is going.  Bobby [Hamilton, truck owner] is a really good coach and everybody at the shop is taking good care of me.  It’s like home away from home and they’re like family to me.  I’m hoping that I’ve made myself welcome.”  H

How important is testing here?

“It was definitely important for me because I’ve never had experience on these kind of tracks.  Put it to you like this: we came here and just about picked up a full second, almost a second and a half.  I’m real happy with it.  That’s our fastest lap since we rolled it off the truck.  I look forward to putting it up front.”

Nick Tucker, No. 31 Dodge: “We had a decent lap going.  I held it flat out so that’s all we had.  On the second lap I bounced it off the track and moved it and hit the wall a little bit.  There’s not too much damage but like I said I held it flat out the first lap so that’s all we had.”

Chaffin and Starr Quotes: Qualifying

05-20-2005  7:42 pm

Chad Chaffin, No. 30 Toyota: “That was a pretty good run for us.  I wouldn’t say we struggled but it took us a little time to dial in our Tundra today during the two practice sessions.  We didn’t test here during the open test so we worked on a lot of things during those practices to see what worked the best for our truck.  We got it handling pretty good there at the end and it was fairly strong with that qualifying run.  TRD have put some awesome horsepower under the hood and that is helpful at this place.  We still had a little tire rub that slowed us a little but in all it was a good qualifying run and I look forward to a good race tomorrow night.”

David Starr, No. 75 Chevrolet: "Man our Silverado’s been all over the place today in practice.  It seems we’re chasing the racetrack with it being so hot outside.  The surface keeps changing.   We go from tight to loose – then loose to tight –turns 1 & 2 we are one way –turns 3 & 4 another way – then they switch after we adjust for it.  It’s frustrating and difficult trying to get it right. We’ve made a ton of adjustments trying to get us where we need for the race.  My Chevy teammates, Dennis (Setzer) and Jack (Sprague), were fast in practice so we’ll go and find out what they are doing and what lines they are working.  We had a pretty good mock qualifying run – I hope I can pick it up a bit more tonight and have repeat the pole here at Lowe’s.   I know we’ll have the right truck in our Spears Manufacturing Silverado for the race – McCarty and the guys are working away and will have us all set by the time the checkered drops tomorrow night."
