Good morning from Gateway

04-30-2005  9:35 am

Good morning from a sunny and cool Gateway International Raceway! After an all day rain yesterday, the skies have cleared and a gentle breeze is blowing across the speedway from turns three and four down the front stretch to turns one and two at the 1.25-mile track. The temps are in the upper 40s as the teams walked in about 30 minutes ago and it is expected that we will have a high around 60. There is no real chance of rain today, and while the jet blowers are out drying the last remaining wet patches on the speedway, we should be ready to rock and roll with the first practice on time shortly. We will have all of the news and notes from Gateway as they happen right here on TrackSideLive and don't forget to log on to our exclusive Live! Bud Pole Qualifying today at 4:30 pm ET.

Spotters reporting to the stand

04-30-2005  9:41 am

We are getting closer to getting the first practice underway as the spotters have slowly been crossing the front stretch and climbing the steps to the spotter's stand on top of the control tower. NASCAR has every intention of getting started on schedule this morning.

Nice honor for the Pressley family

04-30-2005  9:44 am

The town of Asheville, N.C. honored the late Bob Pressley by renaming a stretch of highway through town "Bob Pressley Highway" this week, it has been reported by the Asheville Citizen-Times. Pressley, a legendary short track racer in the southest, passed away one year ago after a battle with cancer.

He is the father of two-time NCTS winner Robert Pressley. The full article is available at the Citizen-Times website by clicking here .

Entry list updates

04-30-2005  10:04 am

Here are the changes to our "normal" weekly entry list here this weekend at Gateway:

Timothy Peters is back in the No. 4 Dodge this weekend, his second start of 2005 and his first career start on a superspeedway.

Ron Hornaday is scheduled to run the No. 6 Chevrolet here this weekend as he does every week, but after surgery earlier in the week to remove his appendix, Tony Raines is on hand to relieve if needed.  Raines is a three-time NCTS winner.

Jimmy Kite is entered in the No. 06 MRD Motorsports Chevrolet attempting to make his second start of 2005.  His first start was in Atlanta.

Three-time NCTS winner and former series runner-up Rich Bickle is entered in the Green Light Racing No. 08 Chevrolet this weekend.  Bickle is scheduled to make three starts with the team, starting here this weekend.

Regan Smith is scheduled to practice and qualify Billy Ballew's No. 15 Chevrolet and is listed as the driver of record on the NASCAR entry list.  Shane Hmiel is to drive the race after competing in this afternoon's NASCAR Busch Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Ken Weaver moves over from his semi-regular ride in the Green Light Racing No. 08 Chevrolet to the No. 20 Chevrolet this weekend.

Shane Wallace is attempting to qualify this weekend in the Oosterland Racing No. 21 Chevrolet.

Brandon Bendele is attempting to make his first NCTS start in the Mighty Motorsports No. 24 Chevrolet.

Nick Tucker is back in the No. 31 Brevak Racing Dodge. Tucker, whose father works in the engine shop at Evernham Motorsports, has brought power from his father's employer under the hood.

Eric Norris, who has made sporadic starts in the NCTS over the years, is in the No. 48 Dodge this weekend.

Justin Allgaier is entered this weekend trying to make his first series start.

John "J.C." Stout is entered as well in his family's No. 91 Chevrolet.

Still touching up the track

04-30-2005  10:20 am

Practice is scheduled to have started at 10:15 am ET, but we are still in a short hold as NASCAR officials drive the track and have the dryers touch up whatever remaining wet spots on the surface.  Drivers have made their way to the pit road wall to check on the condition of the asphalt and confer with various NASCAR officials.

Double Duty

04-30-2005  10:38 am

Even with the NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series races being held hundreds of miles away in Talladega, there are drivers attempting to do double duty this weekend.  Mike Skinner commuted from Talladega to St. Louis last night after qualifying Bill Davis Racing's No. 23 Dodge, while Shane Hmiel will come up today after the NASCAR Busch Series race.

Trucks on track

04-30-2005  10:41 am

The first drivers have made their way on to the speedway to take some initial laps under caution to test the surface.  Terry Cook was the first driver out, with Brendan Gaughan, Timothy Peters, Ron Hornaday, and Matt Crafton also out.

Cook just called to his team "the track is ready guys", and after five or six laps under caution, the starter has removed the caution flag and flipped the lights off and practice is under way.

Setzer rolls down pit road

04-30-2005  10:44 am

Dennis Setzer has turned a couple of slow laps on the speedway and wanted to roll slowly down pit road to test the brakes and clutch of his ride.  "The clutch is good guys," he called as he rolled slowly down the pit road before rolling back on to the track.

They Said It, Practice 1 No. 1

04-30-2005  10:46 am

Terry Cook, No. 10 Ford: "We're a little snug through turns one and two. We need to work on getting the brakes seeded in a little better."

Regan Smith, No. 15 Chevrolet: "It vibrates really bad when I get off the throttle into the turn. It's because it's right. It starts chattering up the track just a little past the entry."

Red Flag out for Hattori crash

04-30-2005  11:00 am

The red flag has just come out for the first time in the practice session for a turn 4 crash involving Shige Hattori.  Hattori has driven away from the scene of the crash, which has caused heavy rear end damage to the No. 9 Toyota. The team will be forced to unload the backup truck.  Hattori, apparently uninjured in the accident, will make the mandatory stop in the infield care center before resuming practice.

Practice 2 underway

04-30-2005  11:47 am

Ken Weaver just thundered down the front stretch to become the first truck to take to the track for the start of Practice 2. We'll keep you abreast as the NCTS drivers have another 75 minutes of practice leading up to qualifying.

They Said It, Post-Practice 1

04-30-2005  11:50 am

Terry Cook, No. 10 Ford: "Let's concentrate on race runs here the second half of practice. We really need to get behind some trucks and feel what the truck is like in race conditions. We don't need a fast truck right now because the race is at night."

Jimmy Spencer, No. 2 Dodge: "Just too darn tight in the center boys."

Dennis Sezter, No. 46 Chevrolet: "It's a little better getting in to the center, in both ends."

Matt Crafton, No. 88 Chevrolet: "It chatters the tires really bad. It won't turn at all in turns one and two."

Red Flag for Hines incident

04-30-2005  11:53 am

NASCAR has thrown the red flag for an incident involving Tracy Hines' No. 13 Chevrolet. Apparently Hines hit some fluid on the track and pushed up into the wall, doing some damage to the right side of his truck. The team is working frantically to assess the damage, prefering to repair the damage rather than unload the backup.

04-30-2005  12:13 pm

Driver Tracy Hines was swept into some fluid and made contact with the wall on his first lap of practice in the second session. The team is busy now putting the engine from the primary truck into the backup truck so he does not have to forfeit his starting position after qualifying.

Jimmy Spencer, No. 2 Dodge: "It's all right getting in. Both ends."

Dennis Setzer, No. 46 Chevrolet: "It was on top of the track in turns three and four. That didn't help our throttle-up off four."

Lots of pack racing in Practice 2

04-30-2005  12:40 pm

With the trucks impounded after qualifying and no traditional "Happy Hour", many of the drivers have worked on race setups in the second practice and the drivers have spent much of the session racing in packs to test their setups against the competition.

Quick red for debris

04-30-2005  12:43 pm

One of NASCAR's eagle-eyed spotters has detected a piece of debris in turn one, which has brought the second practice to a temporary halt. Track crews have collected the debris and are making a quick spin around the track to check for other debris before we go back to green.

Ron Hornaday, No. 6 Chevrolet

04-30-2005  1:53 pm

Hornaday suffered a ruptured appendix on Tuesday, April 26th after truck testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway and underwent an appendectomy that evening.  Hornaday practiced the truck the entire one-hour first practice today and the majority of the second practice session.

“I feel good.  Ready to race.  The No. 6 GM Goodwrench Silverado is good, we spent most of the time on race setup in both practices so we may not sit on the pole but we have a good race truck.  No problems with the incision or anything else related to the surgery.  I am comfortable in the truck just like nothing happened."  "We have Tony Raines here to standby just in case and I felt bad he wasn’t going to have any fun so we put him the truck for the last 15 minutes of practice or so, but I am ready to race tonight."

Trucks through tech, being pushed to qualifying grid

04-30-2005  3:03 pm

The NCTS teams are making their way through technical inspection prior to qualifying, and several teams have already made their way to the qualifying grid with their trucks. Don't forget, Live! Bud Pole Qualifying comes at you exclusively here at TruckSeries.com at 4:30 pm ET.

Hornaday: "No plans" to get out of truck tonite

04-30-2005  3:09 pm

Ron Hornaday has absolutely no plans to give up the wheel of the No. 6 Chevrolet tonight, less than a week after having an emergency appendectomy. Tony Raines did take some laps in the truck during the second practice, but that was mainly to meet NASCAR's eligibility rules should some unforeseen circumstance arise and Hornaday need relief. "Tony came all this way, he might as well get a few laps in and have some fun," Hornaday said. The only circumstances, according to Hornaday's team, that Raines would take the wheel is if Hornaday is involved in an early accident and the truck goes back out many laps down in some form of disrepair.

Driver Meeting Notes

04-30-2005  7:11 pm

Here are some notes from the driver's meeting, which just concluded moments ago:

There will be three pace laps on the initial roll off tonite...pit road speed, which starts 220 feet before the first pit box and ends 110 feet past the last pit box, is 45 miles per hour...the pace truck will run 50 miles per hour...Wayne Auton cautioned the NCTS drivers and teams: "It is really tight in turn one ladies and gentlemen, let's get through there the first few laps and get some racing in. Keep calm the entire race, but especially the first few laps."...drivers must enter the pits by using the entry lane starting in turn three...drivers not using the entry lane will be penalized with a drive through under green or tail end of the longest line under caution...there is no passing of trucks without a problem on the entry lane...if a truck does have a problem, drivers may pass only to the right...there is an escape road to leave the pit entry lane if the caution were to come out under green flag conditions and the driver does not want to make a pit stop and risk losing a lap...there is no speed limit on the pit entry lane, but under caution the pace truck cannot be passed...the light that signifies the pit road status is at the entry lane in turn three...the commitment line is actually inside the pit road wall...the restart point is the cone on the wall exiting turn four.
