Good day from Fontana
02-24-2005 12:35 pm
Good day from sunny southern California! The weather looks like it will be friendly with us as we prepare for the second round of the 2005 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season. There is a light layer of fog that is flowing down from the snow-covered mountains behind the California Speedway, but that should burn off as the sun rises higher in the sky and the temperatures climb into the mid to upper 60s as is expected. The ground is definitely saturated after all of the rain that has fallen in the past 10 days, but none is expected in the next two days so we should be free of weather-related interruptions. We'll have all the news and notes from the garage leading up to today's twin practice sessions for tomorrow's Bud Pole Qualifying (Friday, 1 pm ET) and American Racing Wheels 200 (Friday, 9 pm ET). On-track action begins today at 5 pm ET, so keep it locked on to TrackSideLive! presented by Team ASE throughout the day for continuous real-time updates.
Fontana Fast Facts
02-24-2005 12:42 pm
Here is the 411 on the California Speedway...
Built by Roger Penske, the track opened in 1997 to rave reviews from fans and competitors alike. The track is a virtual clone of it's sister facility, Michigan International Speedway, with only the slightly lower degree of banking in the turns here in Fontana being different. The overall length of the track is 2 miles, with the D-shaped frontstretch measuring 3,100 feet while the straight backstretch checks in at 2,500 feet. The turns are banked at 14 degrees with 11 degrees of banking on the frontstretch. The backstretch is banked at 3 degrees, just enough to allow rain water to run off. The 100-lap scheduled race distance is 200 miles.

Fontana Milestones
02-24-2005 12:57 pm
Rick Crawford earns the NCTS "Ironman" designation here this weekend when he becomes the first driver to ever accomplish 200 consecutive series starts when he takes the green flag in tomorrow's American Racing Wheels 200. Crawford's streak dates back to the opening race of the 1997 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he collected his first series win a year later in 1998. Crawford has run every NCTS event he has entered with the same owner, Ozona, Texas' Tom Mitchell. Crawford was the runner-up for the 2002 NCTS championship, and has three career NCTS wins (1998, Homestead; 2003, Daytona; 2004, Martinsville).
One streak that will come to an end here at California Speedway is a 201 consecutive race streak of former Liberty Racing and ThorSport Racing team manager Tim Stephens. Stephens has stepped back from team involvement and retired from active spotting duties following the 2004 season, but was in attendance last week in Daytona. His streak dates to the fall 1996 event at Phoenix after missing the previous event at Mesa Marin Speedway to attend a wedding. In his career, Stephens spotted for the likes of Butch Miller, Kenny Irwin, Kevin Harvick, Terry Cook, Matt Crafton, Tina Gordon, and Tracy Hines. He is now overseeing operations at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway in preparation for the second annual UAW/GM Ohio 250 coming up in May. Of course, Stephens is also a frequent contributor to TruckSeries.com with his "The Inside Line" column and frequently served as an eye-in-the-sky from the spotter's stand for TrackSideLive! during practice.
One driver setting a personal milestone here this weekend is Terry Cook, who will celebrate his 37th birthday on Saturday. Cook, along with Crawford, is one of two drivers to start every NCTS race at California Speedway.Cook, who has 175 consecutive starts heading into tomorrow's American Racing Wheels 200, will also hit the 200 start plateau his season, which is expected to come in June at his home track in Michigan.
Congratulations to all three on their respective achievements!
Sprague breaks heel, will sit out most of practice
02-24-2005 2:31 pm
Jack Sprague has suffered a broken heel in a household accident and will relinquish the wheel of the No. 16 Xpress Motorsports Chevrolet to Mike Bliss for most of today's practice sessions. The plan is for Sprague to run the race, with Bliss standing by in case Sprague needs relief.
New look for Starr
02-24-2005 2:48 pm
When the green flag drops on Friday's American Racing Wheels 200, it will mark the 244th race in series history. In each and every one of those, there has been a No. 75 Chevrolet from the Spears Motorsports stables, and for 242 of those, the truck has been white with dark and light blue trim. For the first time in over 20 years of fielding racecars/trucks, the Spears machine will sport drastically different colors. This weekend, David Starr is piloting a black and yellow No. 75 with Spears' FlameGuard CPVC Fire Sprinkler Products on the quarter panels. Spears Manufacturing is one of the country's leading producers of PVC pipe for the plumbing industry.

Sprague comments on injury
02-24-2005 4:04 pm
Jack Sprague, No. 16 Chevrolet: “This certainly isn’t good timing for this to happen. But this Chevy Trucks team is strong. Chris (Showalter, crew chief) and everyone on the Chevy Trucks team have worked hard to get this team in position to be a serious championship contender this season.
“We have discussed this at length with Dave (Fuge, team owner) and the entire crew to make the correct decisions for the good of the team. This isn’t going to hurt our chances for race wins and the championship.
“I am going to limit my time in the truck prior to the race and will be behind the wheel of the truck when the green flag flies. I will stay in the truck as long as I feel I am competitive. If I feel I am not competitive and I need to get out, we have a great driver in Mike Bliss standing by and he can wheel it to the front. The key is to make sure we don’t lose a lap making the driver change.”
Bliss will also qualify the truck for Sprague, meaning that the No. 16 will move to the back of the pack for the green flag due to the driver change.
Cram teams with Hines
02-24-2005 4:12 pm
With the departure of Lance Hooper from the ThorSport team, Tracy Hines and his crew were looking for a leader here in California. They found their leader when Kevin Cram stepped in to help this weekend. Cram spent several seasons working with Stacy Compton in both the Truck Series and the Cup Series, and has most recently been working with Brevak Racing in the NCTS.
Spotters to the stand...
02-24-2005 4:18 pm
The spotters have been summonded to the roof in preparation for practice, which is scheduled to start at the top of the hour. We will keep you abreast of all the action during both 70-minute sessions right here with our exclusive real-time updates here on TrackSideLive! presented by Team ASE.

Trucks on Track
02-24-2005 4:57 pm
The first drivers have made their way to the speedway and practice is underway for the American Racing Wheels 200. Ted Musgrave was the first on the track, with Chase Montgomery out right behind him.
They Said It, No. 1
02-24-2005 4:58 pm
Rick Crawford, No. 14 Ford: "I think we should just go out and shake it down, get everything up to temperature and then let it go."
Chase Montgmery, No. 18 Dodge: "It's a little free getting into three and a little tight coming off four, but for now it's okay."
Dennis Setzer, No. 46 Chevrolet: "It's turning 86 and a half down the straightaway."
Race practice
02-24-2005 5:00 pm
With NASCAR's impound rules in effect all season long, the teams are again concentrating on race conditions versus practice. Several of the drivers have already found themselves running side by side all the way around the speedway.
Quick caution for debris
02-24-2005 5:03 pm
"Tower, tell Cleanup Two that we got it." That was the call from the track safety crew as a quick red flag came out for a piece of debris out on the racing surface. After a quick track inspection, the trucks are back out on the track.

Must've rained at the track, but not at the hotel

When the TrackSideLive crew rolled their tired rears out of bed this morning, the curtains were pulled and a quick glance at the weather saw a beautiful morning. A short drive to the track (well, short mileage wise, but long as far as standing still in SoCal traffic) found damp ground in and around the track grounds. A widely scattered storm rolled through the area last night, missing Ontario but nailing Fontana just a few miles away. Track crews are working diligently to get the track dry in time for the 10 am PT qualifying session. Dryers are on the track now and the track is looking very good, so we shouldn't expect any delays.

Sprague/Bliss plan
02-25-2005 12:17 pm
As of the driver's meeting at 12 pm ET, Jack Sprague was still planning on starting the No. 16 Chevrolet this evening but yielding the truck to Mike Bliss at the first yellow/pit stop. Bliss is still scheduled to qualify the truck at 1 pm ET this afternoon, meaning (if indeed Bliss does qualify the truck) when Sprague starts he will start from the tail of the field for making a driver change. We will keep abreast of this developing situation all day and keep you informed as the situation warrants.
Notable Quotables, TC and Brad K
02-25-2005 12:20 pm
Terry Cook, No. 10 Ford: “Here qualifying doesn’t mean a whole lot but when you come to the wide, fast California Speedway, qualifying is nothing more than just a good selection on pit road. California Speedway has the widest pit stalls in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series so chances of you getting blocked in are usually tough. We’re going to try for a top-10 start but if we don’t then we’ll be ready for a long run in the race, which is typical here at California.”
Brad Keselowski, No. 29 Ford: “We really put a lot of work into this truck during the winter and this was the race track that I wanted to bring it to. Of course this is not exactly the ideal way to bring a truck to its first race, but we used these two practice sessions as more of shake downs rather than true practice for qualifying or the race. I do wish we could have tested before we brought the truck out, but I’m real confident that it will show its strength in the race Friday.”
Notable Quotables, Sprague and Bliss
02-25-2005 12:23 pm
Jack Sprague, No. 16 Chevrolet: "We will continue with our plan to have him qualify and I will start it the race at the back of the field and see how far we can go. I will get out if it is the best thing for the team to do because as long as we don’t lose a lap on the driver change, Bliss can take the truck to the front and bring home a strong finish.”
Mike Bliss, substitute driver, No. 16 Chevrolet: "I don’t think Jack will get out of it personally the truck is that good. It ran just as fast at the end of a tire run as it did as it did at the beginning of a tire run so that is pretty good.“The plan is still for me to qualify, but Jack was pretty pumped up when he got out so we will see how it he feels.”
Notable quotables, Kerry and Setzer
02-25-2005 12:26 pm
Kerry Earnhardt, No. 15 Chevrolet: “It just got away from me. I don’t really know what happened. Ritchie (Wauters, crew chief) and the guys pulled out the backup truck. We won’t really know what we have until we go out to qualify.”
Dennis Setzer, No. 16 Chevrolet: “The draft is important here but no near as much as Daytona. You will run a lot faster lap by yourself here than you can at Daytona. I guess we are running in the low 170 mph here. You will run a lot faster in the draft here behind another truck but there is a bigger chance it will mess up your trucks handling ability whether you are the truck in front or back. Your trucks handling ability is more important here than at Daytona."
Notable Quotables, Hornaday, Sutton and Smith
02-25-2005 12:29 pm
Ron Hornaday, No. 6 Chevrolet: “The gear rule is something new and if I had my choice I would put a little more gear in it to help me up off the corner a little bit. Right now it is momentum. It is me learning these trucks a little bit. We have so much downforce in these Chevy Silverados. Chevy has really done their homework and I have to really arc it in the corner to keep the thing free to use the horsepower I have. Little learning experience for me and I hope I can learn it by lap 10 tomorrow night.”
Kelly Sutton, No. 02 Chevrolet: “The second practice was a bit of a struggle. The truck was getting pretty free on entry and through the center, and we noticed a tire going down. I went back out on the track, but just could not get a good handle on the truck. Come to find out, the left rear axle bolt had backed out."
Regan Smith, No. 19 Chevrolet: “We are ok in race trim but our bonsai qualifying run got messed up with other trucks so I am not totally sure how our No. 19 Silverado will be in qualifying."

Bodine to the back
02-25-2005 3:10 pm
Todd Bodine broke a valve spring on his qualifying run, and his team is now in the process of changing the engine for the start of the race. Bodine will now fall to the back of the pack prior to the start and take the green flag from the rear of the field.
Mansfield tickets going fast
02-25-2005 4:11 pm
The management at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway has announced today that ticket sales for the upcoming UAW/GM Ohio 250 have been very brisk. As of Friday, February 25, approximately 5,000 reserved seat and general admission tickets remain available for public purchase.
"We've sold more than 20,000 tickets to this year's truck race," said MMS general manager Chris Mize. "With the expansion of our capacity, we do still have some tickets left, some good seats, but sales are going strong. Anybody that wants to come to this race should get in touch with our ticket office soon. Otherwise, they may be left out."

Starr just misses pole in California
02-25-2005 4:37 pm
David Starr, No. 75 Chevrolet: “I was hoping to keep the Spears Manufacturing FlameGuard Silverado on the pole but we’ll take the outside. I have the right truck for the race and I think we are going to be really good in our Chevrolet Silverado. From what I felt in qualifying Dave McCarty made the right adjustments and hopefully when they drop the checkered flag you’ll see the Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet in the Victory Lane.”
Notable Quotables: Bliss, Smith, and Sutton
02-25-2005 4:40 pm
Mike Bliss, substitute driver, No. 16 Chevrolet: “I had it flat-footed all the way around. The Chevy Trucks Silverado will race good tonight. I got all there was out of it for qualifying and feel like this is a solid effort for this team. As I said yesterday, I am not sure Jack will get out of the truck it drives so good. But I will be ready to get in if he decides he needs to climb out. As long as we can make the driver change under yellow and don’t lose a lap, I think we can drive it back to the front. It is fun to get back in a truck, I love driving them. It is just great to get back in it and go race hard for 100 laps. I am looking forward to tonight’s race.”
Regan Smith, No. 19 Chevrolet: "You always hope you will be closer to the front of the field but we are in the race and will work our way toward the front. Our goal is to come out of here with a good finish and build some points. We sure don’t need to get caught up in anything this week.”
Kelly Sutton, No. 02 Chevrolet: "The truck felt better than it did during final practice, and I knew it could turn a better lap than our first one. I tried to hold it wide open, but it just would not stick in two, and around it went. Kept it off the wall, but flattened both right sides. So, we'll put on four fresh tires, go to the back of the field, and start driving this 02 Chevy Silverado toward the front."

No. 75 David Starr, Chevrolet - Finished 27th
02-26-2005 12:00 am
“We had the right truck tonight with our Spears Chevrolet Silverado. We were awesome right from the start. We got behind there about 60 laps into it. The No. 23 truck got a good run on me and got the inside of me and we ran side by side. Someone else came in and I don’t know if they got into him or if he got loose and had to go up the race track. He pushed me up the race track and we lost four or five spots.” ... “All and all we had a good race tonight. It’s just the way it played out; we fell back to 14th or 15th but had new tires on and were on our way back up front. I just feel bad for my guys everybody did their job tonight. The guys work their butts off and put their hearts and souls into these trucks. We were charging our way back up to the front. Coming off turn 2 I got underneath someone and my Silverado just broke loose. I should have spun it because I kind of tried to catch it, it caught and we ran into the fence and I took someone else in the aftermath. It’s a shame we had a pretty good hotrod tonight and I thought we could have won the race. We’ll keep on trucking and hopefully put our Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet in Victory Lane in Atlanta.”
No. 10 Terry Cook, Ford - Finished 15th
02-26-2005 12:02 am
“The Power Stroke Diesel by International Ford was definitely not as good in race trim as we thought it would be,” said Cook. “We never gave up. The race is one hundred laps so you don’t give up at lap 75 and we kept on chugging along. Fortunately we were able to get our lap back. We weren’t able to make the right adjustments to get the truck where we needed it to be. We went just before the second caution flag to pit and got a lap down and that just put us behind with the long green-flag run thereafter. We chased the balance back and forth all night so I don’t see where the compound tires would have been an issue, too soft or too hard. We just weren’t on tonight and need to do our homework back at the shop. We have no one to blame but ourselves.”
Notable Quotables, Bliss and Sprague
02-26-2005 12:41 am
Mike Bliss, substitute driver, No. 16 Chevrolet: "Man I wanted to win this race. I was going to donate the winnings to getting Jack’s gutters cleaned. The Chevy Trucks Silverado was great tonight. We got just a little tight when we were around other trucks but when I was in the lead and had the room to arc it the way I needed to, it was fine. We just had a little miss calculation on our fuel but we figured we might as well roll the dice and see where we landed. You just use more fuel in these trucks when you lead and came up short."
Jack Sprague, No. 16 Chevrolet: "The truck was awesome and I sure hated getting out of it. It hurt my foot but I could have done it cause it is easy for a driver to drive a truck that good. But Bliss is a wheel man and he gave it a heck of a run. I just couldn’t risk damaging my foot more than it is because then I would be out for a long time and this team is a championship contender this season."
Notable Quotables, Crafton and Setzer
02-26-2005 12:44 am
Matt Crafton, No. 88 Chevrolet: "I think they know this team is for real now. We ran out of gas on that first run so we had to go to the very back and work our way up. That is what got us behind. A sixth place finish is pretty awesome. We were a little off on our tires or something. The first set was great and after that we were a little off and the thing got tight the rest of the night. This was awesome."
Dennis Setzer, No. 46 Chevrolet: We had to put some old tires on the truck that had a heat cycle in them and the truck was really loose those last few laps. We couldn’t get off the corners like we needed to so we could get down the straights like we needed. I just couldn’t hang on to it in the corners like I needed to because it was too loose and we couldn’t get it back. I think we restarted nineteenth and got a top ten out of this so that’s not too bad."
Notable Quotables, Huffman and Benson
02-26-2005 12:47 am
Robert Huffman, No. 12 Toyota: "At the end of the race -- we had pitted early and didn’t take tires after lap 50 -- we just ran out of tires. I think we could have run with the guys up front, but our truck got tight when I was running with that pack."
Johnny Benson, No. 23 Toyota: "We ran into a little misfortune when David (Starr) got loose -- he was underneath somebody, got the air taken off a little bit and got loose. He was trying to play catch-up and I think he was trying to save it from spinning into the infield. Eventually it hooked on him and went up and hit the wall. I went left because I figured he was going to stay there for a while, but he came shooting across and got us. It tore up the truck a little bit. Those Tundras are tough though -- we came in and made four pit stops -- then came out 24th and worked our way up to 12th in about 15 laps. I’m not going to complain, we led, we were fast, and we were running third at the time when that incident happened."
Notable Quotables, Skinner and Bodine
02-26-2005 12:49 am
Mike Skinner, No. 5 Toyota: “We just missed the set-up tonight and it’s really a shame because we qualified awfully good. Right from the first lap we didn’t have any grip. We were just loose at the start, then five laps later it was pushing so bad we couldn’t turn into a 40-acre field."
Todd Bodine, No. 66 Toyota: "We had to start in the back. My truck was fast and I was just taking my time moving up. I spoke with Ken (Weaver) and he’s not sure what happened. He’s not sure if he cut a tire or not, but he got sideways and came back up in front of us. That’s what happens when you start in the back -- you take that chance and unfortunately we got our Tundra caught up in it.”
Notable Quotables, Starr, Hornaday, and Hines
02-26-2005 12:53 am
David Starr, No. 75 Chevrolet: "We were charging our way back up to the front. Coming off turn 2 I got underneath someone and my Silverado just broke loose. I should have spun it because I kind of tried to catch it, it caught and we ran into the fence and I took someone else in the aftermath. It’s a shame we had a pretty good hotrod tonight and I thought we could have won the race."
Ron Hornaday, No. 6 Chevrolet: "I had a really fun time out there tonight. I thought we were the truck to beat; we just had something go wrong on a pit stop. I raced the last 20 laps with no brakes."
Tracy Hines, No. 13 Chevrolet: “We lost the motor, I honestly don’t know what happened but it just let it go. It is so disappointing because we just can’t seem to get our momentum going."
Notable Quotables, Earnhardt and Murphy
02-26-2005 12:56 am
Kerry Earnhardt, No. 15 Chevrolet: "The truck kept running hot and I don’t know why. We got up to 280 the last 20 laps and just kind of run from there and just held on to it. We started losing a little power because we were running hot but all in all we finished."
Sean Murphy, No. 07 Chevrolet: " It had a real bad aero push to it. It was fast when we could get it in clean air. We could run the guys back down but as soon as I got up behind them it just got real, real tight. We held on and came from a lap down and finished 19th so I guess it’s not that bad.”
Notable Quotables, Rick Crawford
02-26-2005 12:59 am
Rick Crawford, No. 14 Ford: "My 200th race, not too much different than the first race. I finished 11th in the first race and finished 14th tonight. We fought back from adversity with overheating because of a tear-off across the grille and had to pit before we melted the motor down. The Yates-Roush engine makes a lot of steam and we didn't want it to escape. Me and Cowboy will get this Circle Bar team back going, but we needed this race under our belt. There's not a scratch on it and we'll be ready for Atlanta.""

Steve Park, No. 62 Dodge: "We were just trying really hard to win a race. I was trying to figure out how to get around Bliss, and the next thing I knew he pulled down, pulled off the racetrack. And I was like, for a second, ‘Where’s he going?’ And then I knew because my spotter was telling me there was like four to go. I’m like, ‘He must have got a flat, or run out of gas or something.’ I was just amazed that this happened to me."
Notable Quotables, Musgrave and Hamilton
02-26-2005 1:06 am
Ted Musgrave, No. 1 Dodge: "We started 16th and drove to second. We pitted on lap 40, and that was our strategy because of fuel mileage. The caution came out the next lap and we’re a lap down. It’s early, and I’ve got a winning truck, a truck capable of winning. We got our lap back and were hauling the mail out there in front. We got Jimmy the lucky dog, and everybody got back on schedule. Then we came in and made a pit stop and the lug nuts fell off. By the time we got that done I was at the tail end of the longest line again. With only 18 or 20 to go, that’s tough."
Bobby Hamilton, No. 04 Dodge: "It was pretty exciting at times. I think we went off in the corner three or four wide, but the track was pretty forgiving tonight. It was slick up at the top, but if you had to go up there it wasn’t like you were going to kill yourself. You don’t have time to ride around here like you do in those Cup races. You’ve got to go wide open all the time. It’s like a huge heat race or something.”
That's a night everyone!

We are going to call it a night from the California Speedway. Steve Park has collected his first career series win and becomes the 10th driver in NASCAR history to win in the Nextel Cup, Busch, and Truck Series. His win comes in his 31st career start, and it is Orleans Racing's first win since Oct. 11, 2003 when Brendan Gaughan won at Texas Motor Speedway. Park's win comes exactly four years to the day since his last NASCAR win in the Cup Series event at North Carolina Speedway in 2001.
Bobby Hamilton has a first and a second to start off 2005, and unofficially leads Ricky Craven, who finished third, in the NCTS championship standings by 25 points. Craven's teammate Todd Kluever finished fourth in just his second series start.
Ted Musgrave finished fifth, and amazingly, it is his worst career finish here at California Speedway. He is a three time winner at Fontana and now has five top-5 finishes in five starts.
Park averaged 128.000 miles per hour in a race that saw five cautions for 21 laps. twenty of the 28 finishers were on the lead lap.
They are turning off the lights and locking the doors, so we have to go. Thanks for sticking with us throughout the past couple of days. Get your batteries recharged the next couple of weekends and we'll see you from Atlanta on March 18. Good night everyone!
