Facts are facts, in NASCAR Racing there is precious little available to a race team that allows them to separate themselves from the guy in the next garage stall. With NASCAR's rigid inspection process there is not a lot room for creativity, and for the most part all the parts available to team "A" are also available to team "B". So what is it that makes some teams rise to the top? It's not the bits and pieces that go on the vehicles; No, it's preparation and chemistry that get the job done. "When you get into youth it gets to be a very tough thing because it's hard to find a person at a very young age that doesn't get into the distractions. Everybody is looking for Jeff Gordon and he's not out there. Everybody is still looking for him. They'll say 'We've got Jamie McMurray and we've got this and we've got that, but nobody has Jeff Gordon yet. Not yet they don't, not one person, I don't care what anybody says because when he came up he was very disciplined, very dedicated to the sport and was a great spokesperson for the sport. He's very good at what he does on and off the racetrack. We just can't find them young like that anymore."

"Really, all the limelight goes on in that particular series [NEXTEL Cup] which is good, because that's the originator of it all, but I think it needs to trickle down to this deal. The only bad thing about it is that we don't run enough races. I've already thought about this. The way the schedule is, the Cup guys would start it first and the Busch cars would start it second then we would start it third. So it would be a stair step for all media outlets to focus on. I don't think you can do it with 10 races to go in Craftsman Trucks because we only run 25 races."

As a fulltime NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor in 2005, however, Spencer's view has turned 180 degrees. "I've never been in a series any more competitive than this one is today," said Spencer, a 30-year racing veteran and two-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series winner with 476 starts and nearly $20 million won. Spencer, 48, may be on the short side of his competitive career but the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is giving him plenty of what got him hooked on racing in the first place: the opportunity to win.
