Welcome to Milwaukee!

06-25-2004  11:46 am

Welcome to the historic Milwaukee Mile! We are sitting in the center of the oldest automobile racetrack in the United States, opening for business in 1903. The weather is absolutely picture perfect, it should get up into the upper 70s/low 80s for highs, and dip into the 60s come racetime. Keep it locked on TruckSeries.com for EXCLUSIVE coverage of the Black Cat Fireworks 200, including Live! Qualifying at 6 pm ET, and of course, TrackSideLive! will be scouring the garage area for all the news and notes leading up to and following tonight's 200-lapper on The Mile!

Milwaukee Mile history

06-25-2004  12:00 am

The Black Cat 200 will mark the 10th running of an NCTS event at The Milwaukee Mile. No driver has yet to win more than one race here at this track, and the only team owner to win more than one race here is Jack Roush (1999, Greg Biffle; 2000, Kurt Busch).

Here are the previous winners:

1995: Mike Skinner
1996: Jack Sprague
1997: Ron Hornaday
1998: Mike Bliss
1999: Greg Biffle
2000: Kurt Busch
2001: Ted Musgrave
2002: Terry Cook
2003: Brendan Gaughan

Ford has won four races here, and Chevy and Dodge three each.

The track is one mile in length, with 9.25 degrees of banking in the corners and 2.5 degrees on the straights. The length of each straightaway is 1,265 feet.

The track qualifying record is held by Greg Biffle at 29.727 seconds/121.102 miles per hour. The race record is held by Brendan Gaughan at 1 hour, 49 minutes, 24 seconds/109.689 miles per hour.

The deepest any previous winner has started is 8th (Jack Sprague, 1996). Four drivers have won from the pole.

Tim Schendel, driver, No. 31 Dodge

06-25-2004  12:41 am

"I am looking forward to it (NCTS debut). We ran seventh in an NASCAR Touring race here a few years ago. We were just so-so back then. When we go to the miles and mile and a halfs now, we are the guys to beat. I think we have a pretty good chance to run well here this weekend. We have the pieces in place."

Darnell to debut

06-25-2004  12:46 am

Erik Darnell will be making his NCTS debut at the Milwaukee Mile this weekend as well. Darnell is a veteran of Wisconsin late model racing, and the grandson of former NASCAR racer Bay Darnell. His grandfather has the unique distinction of being one of three individuals to end up in Lake Lloyd, the lake in the infield at Daytona International Speedway, as the result of a racing crash.

Practice is on!

06-25-2004  1:00 pm

Tight

06-25-2004  1:38 pm

Most of the teams are fighting the same condition at Milwaukee as they always do: tight in the center. With the flat corners and the high speeds the drivers carry into the sweeping turns here, drivers are always fighting a push through the turns.

Three in a row?

06-25-2004  1:40 pm

Two teams are looking for their third consecutive pole here at Milwaukee. Terry Cook has won the Bud Pole Award here at Milwaukee two years running. However, Cook is now driving for ppc Racing, meaning his former team, K-Automotive, is also looking for their third consecutive pole award here.

Kahne's rookie record shared by NCTS crew chief

06-25-2004  1:42 pm

Everyone is talking about the four runner-up finishes Kasey Kahne has scored in his rookie season in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. What many people don't remember is who the first driver to set that record was: James Hylton. Hylton currently serves as crew chief for the No. 48 Dodge driven this weekend by Jeff Jefferson.

Celebrity match race

06-25-2004  1:44 pm

When the NCTS comes to Michigan International Speedway at the end of July, two Speed Channel on-air personalities will have a chance to get in racecars and beat and bang at a local short track. Ray Dunlap and Rick Allen will take to the Flat Rock Speedway in a match race in the track's 4-cylinder class. Dunlap has raced several enduro events there and has thousands of laps at the speedway, so he has to be the prohibitive favorite to win.

A new addition

06-25-2004  1:47 pm

Congratulations go out to Ed and Julie Riley, who welcomed their first child to the world at 12:50 pm ET this afternoon. Magdalene Christine Riley came in at 8 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 inches long. Riley is the tire specialist for ThorSport Racing.

Jim Sauter, driver, No. 43 Chevrolet

06-25-2004  2:43 pm

"Yeah, I suppose I have a few more laps here than some people. But all those laps really don't helo me for tonight. No one has ever raced here at night before, so we don't really know what to expect. I think we can all take a guess and say the track will get tighter, but it could throw us a curveball. It's been a while since I was in a truck. The last time was Michigan in 1999. I know we ended up with a top-10 finish. We have a pretty good truck, so we'll see how we do tonight."

Shane Hmiel, driver, No. 15 Chevrolet

06-25-2004  2:45 pm

"We're one spot shy of where we want to be. We're okay, just a little pushy. We want to get it a tick loose for tonight, becaiuse we expect the track will tighten up. We don't really care about the qualifying setup, we've been working on race setups. It's just a place to start, and we want to finish well."

Travis Kvapil, driver, No. 24 Toyota

06-25-2004  2:49 pm

"I'm pretty happy with it. We unloaded off the trailer pretty decent, which is a pretty big change from how we had been the past month or so."

Brandon Whitt, driver, No. 38

06-25-2004  2:50 pm

"I think we have a pretty good truck. We want to work on getting it a little looser. We worked on race setups at Memphis and we did pretty well there. I think we'll work on a qualifying package during the next practice. We want to be up in the top-15 and stay there the rest of the night."

Engine swap for the 8

06-25-2004  2:53 pm

The BHR2 team is busy swapping engines out of Chase Montgomery's No. 8 Dodge. "I think we had a bearing failure," Montgomery said. "I was going down the backstretch, and it rattled and just quit. We didn't get enough laps to even really get baseline"

Sauter to run NCTS races

06-25-2004  2:55 pm

Jay Sauter says he expects to run some NCTS races later in the season. "We are supposed to run Kentucky and start from there," he said. His father Jim reports Jay will be in the No. 06 MRD Motorsports Chevrolet.

Paul White, driver, No. 13 Chevrolet

06-25-2004  2:56 pm

"We are fighting a pretty big push. I don't know if it is me, or the truck, or a combination of both. I never had a chance to run open wheel cars here, although I am going to run the Silver Crown car here in a month. I want to keep doing this though, I am having a good time in the Truck."

Kevin Love, driver, No. 67 Ford

06-25-2004  2:58 pm

"We're out in left field right now. We're making some pretty big changes, so we'll see what happens."

17. Sutton
18. Jefferson
19. Keselowski

Mark McFarland, driver, No. 59 Dodge

06-25-2004  3:06 pm

"We're working on it. We are a lot tight, but I guess that is what everyone fights here. We wat to get it looser, because we think this place is going to get pretty tight once it cools off. We picked up three tenths in that first practice, if we can pick up three more in the second practice, we'll be right in the hunt."

Hank Parker, Jr., driver, No. 21 Toyota

06-25-2004  3:28 pm

"It's like I don't have any rear grip. It seems like it is really riding on the left rear."

David Starr, driver, No. 75 Chevrolet

06-25-2004  3:30 pm

"I have to be careful getting back on the gas. If I am not, then it wants to snap the rear end loose."

Matt Crafton, driver, No. 6 Chevrolet

06-25-2004  3:32 pm

"It really slid the front end on that run. I really, really had to wait on it to turn before I could get back on the gas."

Vibration on the 10

06-25-2004  3:36 pm

The ppc Racing team has been trying to diagnose a vibration throughout the duration of today's practice sessions. Terry Cook just took the No. 10 Ford back out on to the speedway. "It's still there," he said.

Benson in the booth

06-25-2004  3:52 pm

Former NCTS racer and Busch Series champion Johnny Benson is at The Milwaukee Mile this weekend wearing a Speed Channel shirt. "I'll be doing color this week," he said. "Right now its for this week only, but who knows. It will keep me out of trouble for a day anyhow!"

Terry Cook, driver, No. 10 Ford

06-25-2004  4:50 pm

"The vibration is no big deal. It's very minor. It does get a little worse as you go faster, so it is either tied to wheelspeed or engine rpm's."

Chad Chaffin, driver, No. 18 Dodge

06-25-2004  4:52 pm

"Yeah, the last time we went to a one-mile track we ended up winning the race. I am not sure we could go back to Dover and run that race again and win it, but we were really good right off the trailer there. We're hunting for it a little bit here. Usually you fight a tight condition here, and that is what we expected, but for some reason we are really loose. I think it is a geometry problem. It's not wedge, its not shocks, it is something we built into the truck that isn't reacting the way it is supposed to. I wish we knew exactly what it was. I don't know what it is about this place, but there is something about the Milwaukee Mile that I can't put my finger on. And I have won a race here before. I won the Hooters Cup race here back in 1996, so I always thought that I would come here and be a little ahead of the game. But who knows, we may not be that far off. We could go out and win the pole and win the race!"

Cary Agajanian, owner, No. 43 Chevy

06-25-2004  4:56 pm

"The old man (Jim Sauter) is having a pretty good time and he's running pretty well. It's just great to be here, I can't wait to see this place and these trucks under the lights."

Sponsor on the 67

06-25-2004  5:08 pm

Professional Bull Riders has announced it will sponsor the No. 67 Fiddleback Racing Ford and driver Kevin Love here this weekend. "The demographics are a perfect match," said Brian Jones, PR and Marketing director for Fiddleback Racing. "We hope this is the first race in a long and prosperous relationship with the PBR." Team owner Tom Eldredge is a long-time supporter of the PBR, and Fiddleback Racing is currently sponsoring PBR rider Tony Mendez.  (High Sierra Photo)  Click on image for larger view

Announcement from the 38 soon too?

06-25-2004  5:11 pm

Look for a sponsorship announcement from the Clean Line Racing team very soon as well. The team expects to make the announcement for the remainder of 2004 next week in Kansas.

Kelly Sutton, driver, No. 02 Chevy

06-25-2004  5:16 pm

"The truck felt really good getting into the turns, but was still a little free from the center off. We brought the truck in and changed the shocks and the right spring, and dropped the track bar 1/4". We got back out on the track, and shaved two tenths in only two laps. I wish there had been more time to run a few more laps. The crew is doing a great job, and we're definitely moving in the right direction. The field is pretty tight, so with a few minor air pressure adjustments, we could have a great qualifying run later today."

Houston in the 59

06-25-2004  5:18 pm

Andy Houston made some practice laps in the No. 59 Dodge in the second practice session.

Houston to race the 59

06-25-2004  6:01 pm

Andy Houston will take the reins fo the No. 59 Dodge for tonight's Black Cat Fireworks 200, replacing Mark McFarland. "I have a contract to run 12 races with this team, and it is up to them how that pick and chose them," McFarland said. "I guess they decided they wanted to go with Andy tonight. I was here to race, and I am disappointed, but that's the way it goes sometimes."

Weather change

06-25-2004  7:26 pm

The weather has significantly changed in the course of the last 60 minutes. Clouds have rolled in, and the temperature has dropped a good 10 degrees. There are reports or rain as close as Green Bay, but Milwaukee natives insist that the weather pattern will remain dry for the race this evening.

Congratulations!

06-25-2004  7:41 pm

TruckSeries.com would like to congratulate No. 46 team owner Rob Morgan and his wife Vici on the birth of their second child. Lainey Elle Morgan was born Thursday evening at 10 pm and weighed 7 lbs. 10 ozs.

Mike Skinner, driver, No. 42 Toyota

06-25-2004  8:07 pm

"There was a little miscommunication between the shop and the folks here at the racetrack as to what we should bring to Milwaukee. We are fighting it a little bit, but I think we'll be okay. The communication between myself and the team (Skinner and Travis Kvapil, his Bang! Racing teammate swapped crews this week) has been pretty good, considering I didn't even know most of these guys before I got here. It is nothing at all on that level. I think the race here tonight will be pretty good. Expect to see a lot of spark under the lights."

Jeff Keller, shock specialist, No. 46 Chevy

06-25-2004  8:10 pm

"I think we have a good setup for tonight. No one really knows what to expect, but we think it will tighten up tonight. Dennis had a pretty good lap going, but it broke loose on the second lap and he lost some time."

Race preview...

06-25-2004  8:26 pm

It is tough to make an assessment of who is strong and who is struggling with a one day show and no final practice, but if qualifying is any indication, look for the BHR trucks to be very strong once the green flag drops tonight. Chad Chaffin and Bobby Hamilton both made impressive gains in qualifying to fill the second and third positions behind equally strong Ted Musgrave. Shane Hmiel continues his strong performances of late with a fifth-place qualifying run, while the Roush teammates Carl Edwards and Jon Wood both shoot from the top-10.

Brandon Whitt leads the rookie contingent with a solid 14th-place start, and two flat track specialists, Matt Crafton and Terry Cook, also roll from the top-20.

Jimmy Spencer is on the opposite end of the spectrum from his Ultra teammate, starting 23rd. However, Spencer did win with Ultra Motorsports on a one-mile track in Loudon last fall, and Ultra is definitely hungry to reclaim their dominance of the series. The regular driver of the No. 2 truck, Andy Houston, also starts deep in the field, so keep your eyes open for a charge from the back by both drivers.

Last week we predicted the unpredictable. What will happen this week? Milwaukee is a track that takes the perfect mixture of horsepower and handling. With the practice session in the heat of the day and the race starting under cool nighttime temperatures, anything can happen. Look for the usual bumping and grinding, only to see it amplified as the lights magnify the excitement for the television cameras.

Enjoy the race, live on Speed, and remember to keep it locked on to TrackSideLive!, EXCLUSIVELY on TruckSeries.com, for all the post-race action from the Milwaukee Mile.

Steve Park, driver, No. 62 Dodge

06-26-2004  12:40 am

“My hat’s off to the Orleans Dodge team. We had a malfunction in the pits early, and I had to go to the back. We got penalized for a tire loose on pit lane and had to go to the tail end of the longest line. They should give an award for the most trucks passed because I think we passed the most. I want to congratulate Ted Musgrave and his Mopar team for winning the race. It just goes to show that Dodge is the truck to have. I just really like Craftsman Truck racing. I’m having a lot of fun here. When Brendan moved to Cup a couple of people left with him. We are in the process of rebuilding the Orleans Dodge team back to a team that can win races. Charlie Wilson is doing a great job as the crew chief now. Steve Hibbard is great. And I have to thank all of the guys back at the shop that are working hard. Some guys couldn’t make it this weekend because they are in Vegas working hard on a truck to go to the wind tunnel. They never quit. That is the great thing about this team. They never quit, and they have a driver who is not going to quit either.”

Rick Crawford, driver, No. 14 Ford

06-26-2004  12:40 am

"The Circle Bar race team does a good job, and a little bit of damage isn't going to hurt from having a top-10, but it should have been a top-three truck tonight. We were running in the top three all night, and we came in for gas only and when I left the pits, everybody said it was clear but it wasn't, the 38 truck was coming in. I didn't mean to bump into him, but that's the way it goes. When the caution comes out, I guess the crew chief talks you into the pits and when you the spotter does that, but I can't say anything about that because everybody makes mistakes."

Terry Cook, driver, No. 10 Ford

06-26-2004  12:43 am

"That was making chicken salad out of you know what. The guys did a good job. They never gave up all night long and kept on working. The Power Stroke Diesel Ford wasn't where we needed it in the beginning of the race, but they kept working on it and made some great calls and good changes all night long. I drove as hard as I could all night long, I'll tell you that and we salvaged a good, solid top-10. The afternoon wasn't looking too good and to
come out of here with a solid top-10 is good. We said today after all of the problems that we've had, the season starts today, and I guess in our first race of the season we got a top 10."

Carl Edwards, driver, No. 99 Ford

06-26-2004  12:44 am

"The truck was really close to perfect and I was just trying to work underneath him (Kvapil), and I never got all the way up behind him until that one lap. I came off the corner and I went behind him and the nose was gone. I don't think anything broke, I just lost the downforce on the nose there and just piled it into the fence. We should have won that race. If I would have just worked on him long enough we would have got by him. I just didn't anticipate it pushing that bad off the corner; it was the worst-case scenario. Not really, I was pretty calm and relaxed, just racing there. That's just a pretty bad mistake and I feel bad for my guys. They worked really hard on the truck all night, and we were sitting there and I thought, 'Hey, we have the truck to beat here.' So, it's very frustrating.
It took me all those laps to get over it, but we're not going to let it affect us for Kansas and Kentucky and the next ones."

Jon Wood, driver, No. 50 Ford

06-26-2004  12:46 am

"We definitely picked up our qualifying, that's the only positive thing. We just raced kinda bad all night. I don't know what yet to blame it on. Overall, we weren't very competitive. We could stay out of trouble and miss the wrecks, but that's it, we couldn't pass anybody. The thing that was aggravating was when the lights cut off; that's no fun. The track tightened up a lot more than I anticipated, and we just weren't there."

Jack Sprague, driver, No. 16 Chevrolet

06-26-2004  12:50 am

“Our Chevy Trucks Silverado was awesome. We were a little tight at the start of the race but the guys made some great changes and we got better. We needed just a little more on the next stop. We broke a valve spring and then the whole bottom end let go. We just can’t seem to catch a break. It is disappointing for us because we took a hit in the points as well. We will just regroup and come back at Kansas.”

Dennis Setrzer, driver, No. 46 Chevrolet

06-26-2004  12:50 am

"It was a good run for us because we weren’t that good at the beginning but Danny (Gill, crew chief) and the Silverado guys made great adjustments and we kept getting better as the race went along. We knew that Ted (Musgrave) was strong and if he could get through traffic he would be fast so we hoped there weren’t any more yellows but that isn’t how it played out. But we got a good solid finish in our Silverado and it helped us in the points so we will head to Kansas and run as hard as we can there. You are always disappointed when you don’t get the win you thought you might have a chance for, but it was still a good run for us."

“It was just a bad deal out there we got hit by a spinning truck (#22) and it tore the entire right suspension out of our Spears Silverado. We didn’t have the best run tonight, but Dave (McCarty, crew chief) and the guys had made it much better and we realistically had a top-ten run going. It just seems like we keep having bad luck, but we will keep at it and things will go our way. We will make a hard run in Kansas.”

Matt Crafton, driver, No. 6 Chevrolet

“We had a good run going in our GM Goodwrench Silverado but we just got tighter and tighter on long runs. By the checkered, we were so tight; it was all I could do to hang on to it. But we held on and got another top-ten finish. We keep improving and improving each week, we will get up there at the end of a race racing for the win.”

Attendance

06-26-2004  12:54 am

The Milwaukee Mile has announced a crowd of 26,138 people were on hand to watch tonight's race.

Chad Chaffin, driver, No. 18 Dodge

"What a great night. I knew we were going to drop back at the start because in practice we knew there were a lot of trucks better than we were. But the strategy came to us and we had a good run. Racing with Dennis there at the end was great. We got into it there a little bit but that is good hard racing. I like racing with Dennis. We race each other real clean."

Shane Sieg, driver, No. 07 Chevy

06-26-2004  1:00 am

"We had a pretty good night! The truck is in one piece, and we picked up the rookie of the race award and the picking up places award. Not bad for not even running a qualifying lap. These guys did a great job tonight. I hope we earned some respect from the veterans out there tonight."

Milwaukee post-race wrap up

06-26-2004  1:02 am

The streak is over...Ted Musgrave becomes the first two-time winner at the Milwaukee Mile, and did so in grand style by passing Dennis Setzer late in the race in front of a wildly enthusiastic home state crowd. The Ultra Motorsports team made a statement...they "r" indeed back! Chad Chaffin is making a statement as well, the BHR team is in the hunt for a championship with two drivers now. Travis Kvapil made a move towards the front in front of his home state fans, but came up just short. And what a tough break for Shane Hmiel, looking to pick up his second consecutive top-5 finish, getting spun in sight of the checkered flag.

That is a wrap for TrackSideLive! from Milwaukee...we will pick up EXCLUSIVE coverage of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series from Kansas Speedway next Friday! Good night everyone!
