Race #23 | Chevrolet Silverado 150
Phoenix International Speedway
Friday November 5, 2004

Event Schedule: Phoenix

Kelly “Girl” Sutton Treks to the Grand Canyon State
Rugged mountain ranges, Saguaro cacti towering over hiking trails, and spectacular sunsets are all common sights around Phoenix, but November 5, all eyes will be on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCTS). Rookie Kelly “Girl” Sutton is eager to return to the 1-mile oval in 2004, in search of her best finish of the season. Her first full year has included some ups and downs, but as the first person with a diagnosis of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) known to race in any NASCAR series, Sutton knows a few things about challenges.

GM Racing/Team Silverado Phoenix Preview
Dennis Setzer on Phoenix: “Phoenix is a fun place to race.  Unfortunately our team has been in position to win there the last three years and then we were bit by things out of our control bite us late in the race.  Jack Sprague on Phoenix: “Phoenix has always been one of my favorite tracks to run in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.  It seems to really suit my driving style and I have been fortunate to win a few poles and races there. David Starr on Phoenix: "It is always fun to go to the desert. There is really no other track similar to Phoenix.  It is unique and fun to race on.  You can go two wide and the fans are really great.

Hmiel Ready for Redemption in Phoenix
Shane Hmiel is ready for redemption in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chevy Silverado 150 at Phoenix International Speedway.  Hmiel, coming off a disappointing finish at Martinsville Speedway two weeks ago, is ready to put it behind him and hopes to drive the No. 15 TRIMSPA Chevrolet to victory in Phoenix.

Crawford's Hopes High for Phoenix
Only three races remain in the 2004 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season and Rick Crawford, driver of the #14 Circle Bar Motel & RV Park is looking to head into the off-season with a string of strong results.  Crawford is looking to this weekends Silverado 150 at the Phoenix International Raceway as the place to get the ball rolling in the right direction.  Crawford has competed nine Craftsman Truck Series events in Phoenix capturing one Bud Pole (2002), three top-five and five top-ten finishes.  The Mobile, Alabama native has attempted 1433 laps completing a staggering 1429.

Renshaw Taking Career-Best Finish Momentum to Phoenix
Deborah Renshaw was all smiles when she left the Martinsville Speedway last weekend where she earned her career-best finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series of 15th position.  This week Renshaw will take that momentum to the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway where she looks to back up her run at Martinsville and maybe even improve upon her finish.

Carl Edwards, No. 99 Ford Pre-Race Review: Phoenix
"I love racing at Phoenix.  I've run there a few times in a Silver Crown car, including this March.  The extra laps really help me in the truck.  It made a big difference last year since we were able to finish fourth in my first outing in a truck there.  I'm really excited to get to race twice this weekend in the Superchips F-150 and in my Nextel Cup car. The extra track time I get in both series should really help."

Jon Wood No. 50 Ford Pre-Race Review: Phoenix
"Track position was important at Phoenix last year since it seemed to be a one-groove race track.  That made it tough, especially on restarts.  If someone would get under you, you couldn't get back down in line.  Us starting last because of the motor change certainly didn't help matters.  I don't know if the track has changed any, but it will be important to qualify well so we don't have to fight our way to the front again.

Audio! Brandon Whitt Returning to Familiar Track at Phoenix
Brandon Whitt and the #38 Werner Ladder/Cure Autism Now Ford F-150 team head to the one-mile Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway for Friday’s Phoenix 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. Whitt, the El Cajon, California native, and the Werner Ladder/CAN team will be carrying tremendous momentum to his last “home” game of the season.

Toyota Notes & Quotes: Phoenix
In the most recent NCTS race at Martinsville (VA) Speedway (Oct. 23), Todd Bodine was the top- finishing Toyota driver in the No. 30 Germain/Arnold Racing Tundra when he crossed the finish line seventh.  Toyota drivers following Bodine to the checkered flag were Robert Huffman, who was 10th in the No. 12 Innovative Motorsports Tundra, and Johnny Benson, who finished 11th in the No. 22 Bill Davis Racing Tundra.

Setzer Takes “Laid Back” Approach Into Phoenix
Setzer Takes 01CLaid Back01D Approach Into Phoenix You would think at this point the stress would be getting to Dennis Setzer and his #46 Morgan-Dollar Motorsports teammates.  Setzer sits atop the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings by just one point with just three races remaining in the 2004 season.   And remember, this is a team that fell nine points short of their first title just one year ago.  But one short conversation with the driver of the #46 Chevrolet Silverado would tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. “I think that I am as laid back as I ever have been at this point,” said Setzer.  “Our team is in better control of our whole situation.  Last year we brought good trucks to the track, but with the team being based in Oklahoma, I just showed up to drive.  I didn’t get to interact with the guys who were working on the trucks and putting the setups on them.  Now that the shop is here, I can be more involved before the race.  It’s given me a lot more confidence before we even get to the track.” (Ronda Greer Photo)

Raybestos® Rookie Contenders News and Notes
Robert Huffman was the Raybestos® Rookie of the Race at the Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway.  Huffman scored a 10th-place finish, his fifth top-10 in 23-career starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.  He took Raybestos® Rookie of the Race honors for the sixth time in 2004.  A Raybestos® Rookie has now finished in the top-10 in each of the two fall Craftsman Truck Series races at Martinsville (2003 Raybestos® Rookie of the Year Carl Edwards finished second last October).

Musgrave Poised to Advance in Point Standings
After a weekend off, Ted Musgrave and the No. 1 Ultra Motorsports team will return to action November 5 at Phoenix International Raceway. Musgrave is currently in third position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points chase, only 91 points behind first-place Dennis Setzer. With only three races remaining in the 2004 season, this week marks the 15th consecutive week Musgrave has been in the top-10 in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points.

Jones to Pilot the Team ASE/CARQUEST Dodge at Phoenix
NASCAR veteran P.J. Jones will once again climb into the cockpit of the Ultra Motorsports prepared No. 2 Team ASE/CARQUEST Dodge this weekend when the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series invades Phoenix International Raceway for the Chevy Silverado 150. Jones last start in the NCTS was on October 2, 2004 when he drove an Ultra Motorsports entry at California Speedway, finishing 14th.

Matt Crafton Back on Track and Ready for Phoenix
Matt Crafton, driver of the No. 6 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet Silverado, hopes his sixth place finish in Martinsville, Va. two weekends ago is a sign of things to come with three races remaining in the 2004 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCTS) season. After ending a streak of five races that was anything but enjoyable, Crafton is more than ready for Friday's Chevrolet Silverado 150 presented by Valley Chevy Dealers at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway.

Huffman, No. 12 Toyota Review: Phoenix
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series heads to Phoenix International Raceway this weekend for the 23rd race of this season.  Robert Huffman and the No. 12 Toyota/White House Foods Tundra race team look forward to their visit at the one mile flat track.

Parker, Jr. No. 21 Toyota Review: Phoenix
“I’m really looking forward to racing at Phoenix,” Parker, Jr. said.  “It is definitely one of my favorite tracks and I think we’ll have a real good Toyota Tundra for the race.”  He continued, “We tested last week in Kansas and even though it rained most of the time, we were still able to gather some good information in the short time we had on the track.”

Chad Chaffin Addresses Stiff Competition
“Phoenix is a unique track. I enjoy traveling to the dessert as much as I like racing on the track. It has two very distinct different corners and a dogleg on the back straightaway that is almost a corner in itself. The configuration of the track makes it very difficult to drive. You have to be on top of you’re “A” game at Phoenix. Phoenix reminds me of Gateway International Raceway."

Bobby Hamilton on Winning the Championship for Dodge
“The minute you worry about the points lead is when it gets to you.  I’m the same every week.  Other teams have been worrying too much about this.  They’ve been falling back every week.  We had to wreck in Martinsville to give it to them.  I’m not putting any stock in this championship yet. We started points racing with five to go and we went into Martinsville points racing.  We lost the lead there by only one point, and I had to get extensive damage on my truck to do that.  So all we’ve got to do is win or get a top five in the last three races and we should be fine.  I finished fifth at Phoenix last year. I’ve won every Darlington I’ve entered (two events) and we won Homestead last year.  The last few races are good for our team, so we’ll see how it plays out.”

Scott Lynch to Run Phoenix and Homestead Truck Events
NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series 2003 Champion Scott Lynch will pilot the No. 59 HT Motorsports Dodge at the upcoming NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events at Phoenix International Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway. "I am really pleased to be able to run in this two prestigious events," said Lynch, who will be making his fourth and fifth appearance in the Craftsman Truck Series.  "I ran last year at Miami and finished 12th.   While I have never run a truck at Phoenix, I have taken two wins, set a new track record and earned a Pole there in the West Series."

Chase Montgomery Phoenix Preview
Chase is coming off a 19th place finish at Martinsville where a very strong run was derailed by a flat tire.  The rookie and his BHR2 team look for a career run this week in Phoenix.

Reutimann Competes at Phoenix For the First Time
David Reutimann is looking forward to racing at Phoenix International Raceway due to its history. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to the flat one-mile oval for the 14th time since the divisions inception in February 1995.

Dennis Setzer No. 46 Chevrolet Phoenix Fast Facts
“Phoenix is a fun place to race. Unfortunately our team has been in position to win there the last three years and then we were bit by things out of our control bite us late in the race. Three years ago we cut a tire down while running third and catching the leaders. Two years ago we were third again and right behind the leaders and we lost a cylinder. Then last year we came in on the last pit stop in third, our jack broke during the stop, and we restarted 16th."

Jack Sprague No. 16 Chevrolet Phoenix Fast Facts
“Phoenix has always been one of my favorite tracks to run in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. It seems to really suit my driving style and I have been fortunate to win a few poles and races there. I haven’t race there since 2002 so I am looking forward to being back there in the Chevy Trucks Silverado for the Silverado race. We had certainly had hoped to have more wins under our belts and have our Chevy Trucks Silverado team higher in the points by the time we reached the Phoenix race this season but this has been a building year for us."

Ron Hornaday, No. 47 Chevrolet Phoenix Fast Facts
"I can't wait to strap into the Big & Rich Silverado at Phoenix.  PIR is one of my all-time favorite tracks and I've been fortunate to win several races there and I plan on adding another victory for Chevrolet. I know that the Morgan-Dollar crew put bigger fender braces on the Big & Rich Silverado, so that I can let my old Buddy Jack Sprague know that I'm back.  This race is going to be a lot of fun.  The race fans in Phoenix don't want to miss this one."

Park, No. 62 Dodge Pre-Race Review: Phoenix
“We have seen the team grow this year. We are getting toward the end of the year, and we finally have the people in place to run better and better. I’d been very disappointed if we don’t win a race. We haven’t really concentrated on points all year. You take every race one at a time and have the attitude of winning those races. When you can’t win you finish as high as you can."

David Starr Set to Challenge Valley of the Sun Track
Set to challenge the popular Valley of the Sun track, David Starr and Spears Motorsports are ready to add their name to the list of winners at Phoenix International Raceway, November 5, when the Chevy Silverado 150, Round 23 of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series gets underway.

Kvapil’s Good Luck Charm Returns at Phoenix
I am confident going to Phoenix. I feel like we have as good equipment as anyone else in the series if not better. We have everything we need to win races right now. Phoenix is fun, mile race track but it has a short track feel to it. It’s similar to something between Loudon and Gateway, but it’s got the Memphis and Richmond short track feel to it where you can race really hard with the other competitors. Phoenix is close racing.

NASCAR Preview: Phoenix
Sizing up the championship battle … With three races remaining, the points leader has gone on to win the championship six of nine times. Brendan Gaughan, however, held a 30-point lead in 2003 but finished fourth to Travis Kvapil (No. 24 LINE-X Toyota). Greg Biffle failed to protect a 10-point advantage in 1999 while Sprague saw an 18-point cushion evaporate in 1998. The gap between first and second places with three races left has been 30 points or less in five seasons..

‘Originals’ Hornaday, Skinner and Sprague Reunite in Phoenix
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ original Big Three competitors reunite this week for the Chevy Silverado 150 presented by Valley Chevy Dealers at Phoenix International Raceway. Ron Hornaday Jr. (No. 47 ACXIOM Chevrolet), Mike Skinner (No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota), and Jack Sprague (No. 16 Chevy Trucks Chevrolet) will face off in a series race Friday for the first time since July 1998 at California Speedway. The three drivers, who captured the series’ first five championships, literally built the foundation of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Mile Track Jack Sets Record in Phoenix
Sprague at Bud Pole Board Jack Sprague set the fastest time during Bud Pole Qualifying to win the pole for Friday’s Chevy Silverado 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. Sprague’s fast lap of 27.442 seconds translates to 131.186 miles per hour on the quick one-mile desert oval.  NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series veteran Ken Schrader will start outside row one, his second front row start of 2004 in the NCTS. His lap was just thirty-five thousandths of a second slower than Sprague’s pole winning lap. Carl Edwards will roll off third, with Steve Park and David Starr rounding out the top-5 starters.

Two NCTS Championships at Stake for Dodge Rams at Phoenix
Dodge can clinch the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series manufacturers championship with a win at Phoenix on Friday. Dodge currently holds a 140-131 advantage over Chevrolet, and a victory this weekend would give Dodge at least a 12-point advantage over Chevrolet with two races remaining. The clinch would occur like this: Six points is the maximum gain per race, so if Chevrolet won the last two races after Phoenix and Dodge was the fourth-place finishing manufacturer, Dodge and Chevy would be tied, but Dodge would win the championship based on the tiebreaker – number of victories.

Starr Wins Duel in the Desert
David Starr in Victory Lane David Starr took advantage of Ted Musgrave’s bad luck to win the Chevy Silverado 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Phoenix International Raceway on Friday. Starr took over the lead with 28 laps remaining when then-leader Musgrave pulled to pit road with a flat right front tire. Starr held off pole sitter and three-time Phoenix winner Jack Sprague on two late race restarts to drive to the win. Jack Sprague jumped to the lead from his sixth Bud Pole of the season, and pulled away from the pack on the start. But just six laps later, he was feeling the pressure from second-place Carl Edwards. Edwards continued to keep the pressure on until fate brought him down pit road on lap 17. A cut tire brought Edwards to his pit for a four tire change and dropped him from second to 35th, one lap down. (High Sierra Photo)

PJ Jones Wheels Team ASE/CARQUEST Dodge Home Eighth in Phoenix
Veteran driver P. J. Jones charged his way through the field to post an impressive eighth place finish in the Chevy Silverado 150 at Phoenix International Raceway. This was only Jones' second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start of the year in the No. 2 Team ASE/CARQUEST Dodge and he made the most of his opportunity.

Hamilton Regains Championship Point Lead
Square D Driver Bobby Hamilton finished seventh in the Chevy Silverado 150 at Phoenix International Raceway and as a result of his 15th top-10 finish, he retained the points lead. With only two races left in the season, both of which Hamilton won last year, the Tennessee native is seven points over Dennis Setzer.

Starr Capitalizes on Musgrave's Misfortune
Starr Capitalizes on Musgrave's Misfortune David Starr, in the right place when leader Ted Musgrave’s tire shredded within sight of the finish, held off Bud Pole starter Jack Sprague to win Friday’s Chevy Silverado 150 at Phoenix International Raceway. The victory was Starr’s second of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series campaign while Musgrave, who finished a lap off the pace in 19th place, lost a golden opportunity to turn the championship battle into a tight, three-way battle with two races remaining. Starr, running in the top five throughout the late afternoon event, took second from Todd Bodine during an exchange of pit stops under caution on lap 110. It turned out to be the winning move as Musgrave’s Mopar Dodge – its right front tire shredded – slowed and headed for pit road with 28 laps remaining. Sprague, who moved past Bodine at lap 146, pulled to within a length of the tailgate of the leader’s Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet but could go no further. Starr’s winning margin was .297 second. The victory was worth $49,690. (High Sierra Photo)

Hmiel Rolls Home Fourth at Phoenix
Shane Hmiel in the No. 15 TRIMSPA Chevrolet Silverado brought home a hard fought fourth place finish in the Chevy Silverado 150 at Phoenix International Raceway.  Hmiel started in the 13th position quickly began to power his way through the field.  The Billy Ballew Motorsports Chevrolet was topping the times of the leader by lap 25 and had already advanced to the 7th position.  Hmiel was able to make his way towards the front even though he called on crew chief Ritchie Wauters for some adjustments to the TRIMSPA Silverado.

Toyota Race Notes: Phoenix
Johnny Benson, driver of the No. 23 Bill Davis Racing Tundra, was the top-finishing Toyota driver in today’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCTS) race at Phoenix International Raceway. Benson crossed the finish line fifth at the Arizona one-mile oval to record his fifth top-five finish of the season.

Blown Tire Results in Hard Hit for Montgoery
Chase Montgomery rolled into Phoenix with very high expectations and this only grew after his qualifying effort on Thursday was good for the 12th starting spot in the running of the Silverado 150. All of those expectations were blown away, along with the right front tire of his #8 DODGE, and the result was a heavily damaged truck and a season worst 36th place finish at the Phoenix International Raceway.

Excellent Pit-Stop Performance Puts Crafton 3rd in Phoenix
Excellent pit-stops by Team GM Goodwrench put Matt Crafton, driver of the No. 6 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet Silverado, in a position to take advantage of a couple lead trucks dropping out late in the race to finish third in Friday’s Chevy Silverado 150 at Phoenix International Raceway. He last accomplished this feat at Bristol Motor Speedway back in August. This third place finish keeps Crafton fifth in points, 257 markers back from leader Bobby Hamilton.

Kvapil Disappointed with Average Run at Phoenix
At the helm of the winning Loudon chassis, Travis Kvapil had no doubts his Line-X team could boast a victorious repeat at the Chevy Silverado 150 despite starting in 20th. But after topping the speed charts in both previous practice sessions, the Line-X team stood bewildered as the checkered flag fell for Kvapil who crossed the finish line in 15th place, one position back from his highest running order of the day.

Ted Musgrave Remains in Contention for the Series Title
Ted Musgrave and the No. 1 Ultra Motorsports team took another late-season blow over the weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, as he picked up a bittersweet 19th-place finish. Musgrave qualified seventh for the event, but a flat tire forced him to pull into the pits on lap 123. After changing a tire, Musgrave regrouped to finish 19th.

Raybestos® Rookie News and Notes
A Raybestos® Rookie has won at least one race in each of the past four seasons, dating back to Kurt Busch in 2000.  In fact, four Raybestos® Rookies have posted multiple win seasons: Kenny Irwin (two, 1997), Busch (four, 2000), Brendan Gaughan (two, 2002), and Carl Edwards (three, 2003).

Thursday Admission Fee Waived in Honor of Veterans' Day
Thursday, November 11 promises to be a busy qualifying and practice day for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series as they prepare for the first-ever night race at Darlington, the Darlington 200, coming up on Friday evening, November 12.

Whitt Rookie of the Race for Third Time in Four Races
Brandon Whitt and the #38 Werner Ladder/Cure Autism Now Ford F-150 team overcame an ever-changing race track and an accident 23 laps from the end to finish 20th – and win highest-finshing rookie honors – in Friday’s Phoenix 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at the one-mile Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway.

Flat Tire Ruins Strong Finish for Reutimann at Phoenix
Running seventh with less than 20 laps remaining in the 150-lap NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event, a flat tire on the No. 17 NTN Bearings Toyota Tundra ruined David Reutimann’s chances for a Top-5 finish at Phoenix International Raceway.

Chaffin Finishes 30th after Accident in Phoenix
In the final laps of the Chevy Silverado 150 Dickies Driver Chad Chaffin tangled with another truck causing him to careen into the inside retaining wall and damage his Dodge. Because of the extensive damage, the team was forced to park the truck and finish the race in 30th position. The unfortunate accident dropped Chaffin to ninth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point battle, but he’s only five points out of eighth.

Chevy Silverado 150 Notes and Quotes

In the face of adversity, Ted Musgrave at least was able to maintain a sense of humor. “I don’t know what I did in my previous life but it must have been something bad because I’m really paying for it in this life,” said Musgrave, whose cut tire with 28 laps remaining in Friday’s Chevy Silverado 150 cost him a probable victory and a big move forward in the race for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship. “Every time this team comes to life and goes for a championship something out of their control (happens).

Diary of a Champion: Valley of the Sun
Diary of a Champion: Valley of the Sun On my way to Phoenix on Tuesday, I made a stop at the SEMA show, the automotive show for new parts and products in the industry. Line-X had set up a booth so that I was able to mingle with my fans and sign autographs. The show is amazing and absolutely huge. Even though I was there for just a couple of hours, I got a chance to walk around and enjoy all of the latest and greatest items. It was neat to meet so many fans from all over the world, and I thoroughly enjoyed my short stay in Vegas. I flew into Phoenix that night and got ready for the first day of practice on Wednesday. Going into Phoenix, I was really optimistic and thought we were going to be a team contending for the win. We took the same truck with a similar setup that gave me my second win at Loudon. Huffman Phoenix Post Race Report
Robert Huffman’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Phoenix International Raceway ended in disappointment as Robert was the victim of a spinning truck that hit his No. 12 Toyota Tundra on the passenger side causing damage beyond repair and ending his day with a 31st place finish.

Parker, Jr. Phoenix Post Race Report
Hank Parker, Jr. was looking forward to racing the 1-mile flat track of Phoenix International Raceway, and was moving through the field until a early run in with another truck. Hank was racing his line in the outside groove and was forced up the racetrack into the wall causing front end damage that was able to be repaired, but would end his hopes of a top-10 finish.

David Starr Victorious at Phoenix International Raceway
Showing the style and finesse that has earned them the reputation as one of the top teams in motorsports today, David Starr and the Spears Motorsports crew trounced the competition at Phoenix International Racing, taking the Number One Spot at the Chevy Silverado 150, Round 23 of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Patton Ends Long Day at Phoenix With 25th-Place Finish
J.R. Patton’s homecoming at the Phoenix International Raceway last Friday did not go as planned, with the New Mexico native finishing 25th when the checkers fell on the Chevy Silverado 150.  Patton, in his fifth start for Fiddle Back Racing, said the truck was difficult to drive all week.
